The Effects On Grain-Boundary Processes Of The Steps In The Boundary Plane Associated With The Cores Of Grain-Boundary Dislocations, Alexander H. King, D. A. Smith Jan 1980

The Effects On Grain-Boundary Processes Of The Steps In The Boundary Plane Associated With The Cores Of Grain-Boundary Dislocations, Alexander H. King, D. A. Smith

Alexander H. King

The contribution of the associated steps to the properties of grain-boundary dislocations are investigated. Two methods of step-height determination are given and it is shown that the step height, like the Burgers vector, must be conserved during the reactions of grain-boundary dislocations: this is not always automatic and additional coherent steps must take part in some reactions. The energies associated with steps have been estimated and compared with the elastic energies of grain-boundary dislocations; these comparisons suggest that (a) the reduction of elastic energy alone may not be a sufficient criterion for the progress of a reaction and (b) that …

Thermodynamic Model And Sum Rules For Three-Phase Coexistence Near Thetricritical Point In A Liquid Mixture, Miron Kaufman, K. K. Bardhan, Robert B. Griffiths Jan 1980

Thermodynamic Model And Sum Rules For Three-Phase Coexistence Near Thetricritical Point In A Liquid Mixture, Miron Kaufman, K. K. Bardhan, Robert B. Griffiths

Miron Kaufman

Two sum rules for order-parameter susceptibilities are derived for the classical theory of the three-phase region near a tricritical point in ordinary liquid mixtures. The classical theory can also be fitted in a quantitative way to the composition data of Lang and Widom near the tricritical point in the mixture ethanol+ benzene+ water + ammonium sulfate.

Influence Of Dredging And High Discharge On The Ecology Of Black Canyon, Larry J. Paulson, Theron G. Miller, John R. Baker, U.S. Water And Power Resources Service

Publications (WR)

The Water and Power Resources Service is considering dredging in Black Canyon to create a larger forebay to accommodate higher peak discharges and reverse flows for proposed modifications to Hoover Dam.

The Black Canyon area from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach supports a heavily utilized trout fishery and is important habitat for the razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) and possibly bonytail chub (Gila elegans).

The Water and Power Resources Service initiated this investigation to determine what effect dredging and higher peak-discharges would have on the ecology of Black Canyon.

The Limnological Status Of Lake Mead And Lake Mohave Under Present And Future Powerplant Operations Of Hoover Dam, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon, U.S. Water And Power Resources Service

Publications (WR)

The ever-increasing demand for energy in the southwest has led to a search for additional sources of power generation. Coal-fired powerplants currently provide most of the baseline energy in the southwest, but this must be supplemented with hydroelectric power during periods of peak demand. In order to provide additional peaking power, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is considering a number of projects to modify existing hydroelectric facilities, or add new facilities in the Lake Mead Recreation Area.

The Hoover Powerplant Modification Feasibility Investigation was authorized by Congress on December 16, 1975 to determine the feasibility of: (i) adding one or …

How To Handle An Equation, Richard C. Heyser Jan 1980

How To Handle An Equation, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

"This part might also be called 'math for those who hate math' because I [Heyser] intend to discuss, in words, what the foregoing math symbolism is about." In this paper draft, Heyser explains several mathematical equations for measuring sound.

Untitled (Subject: Energy), Richard C. Heyser Jan 1980

Untitled (Subject: Energy), Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Fundamental energy relations are explored as a basis for the measurement of physical systems. By considering finite dimensional observations in linear Hilbert space it is shown that a necessary and sufficient condition for the conservation of energy is the partitioning of any observation of that energy into two components which will be related through the Hilbert transform. The consequence of this relationship is demonstrated for the equilibrium storage of energy, point-wave duality in measurements, significance of complex representations involving circular form, the meaning of minimum phase and all-pass properties, and the introduction of new measurement characterizations such as the energy-time …

The Pattern Of Twos, Richard C. Heyser Jan 1980

The Pattern Of Twos, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Rather than explaining the meanings behind the phases of sound measurement, Richard C. Heyser explains the relationships between these phases, which he calls the Pattern of Twos.

The Two Parts Of Energy, Richard C. Heyser Jan 1980

The Two Parts Of Energy, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

In this paper, Richard C. Heyser explains the theories behind measuring sound by discussing its energy. Using what he calls abstract geometry, Heyser argues that measuring the transfer properties (that is, pressure and velocity) of sound's energy aids in the discovery of its amplitude and phase (or in-phase and quadrature).

Geology Of The Southcentral Margin Of The Tillamook Highlands; Southwest Quarter Of The Enright Quadrangle, Tillamook County, Oregon, Kenneth Allan Cameron

Dissertations and Theses

The Tillamook Highlands is a largely unmapped volcanic pile located in the north end of the Coast Range of Oregon. The 36 square miles of T. 1 N., R. 8 W., on the southcentral margin of the Highlands, was chosen for detailed study.

The study area is composed of Eocene age sedimentary and volcanic units which were deposited in a filling basin. The lowest units were deposited in moderate to deep marine waters; the uppermost were deposited subaerially.

Stratigraphy And Sedimentation Of The Spencer Formation In Yamhill And Washington Counties, Oregon, Fathi Ayoub Al-Azzaby Jan 1980

Stratigraphy And Sedimentation Of The Spencer Formation In Yamhill And Washington Counties, Oregon, Fathi Ayoub Al-Azzaby

Dissertations and Theses

The Spencer Formation in Yamhill and Washington Counties, Oregon, is exposed in a narrow belt 27 km long, from 1/4 to 3 km wide and with a maximum thickness of about 400 m. The formation is composed entirely of sandstone with interbedded thin layers of mudstone in the uppermost member. The sedimentary structure and paleoecology indicate a shallow marine depositional environment. The upper member of the Spencer Formation contains more quartz, plagioclase, and hornblende than does the lower member, but K-feldspar is less than that of the lower member. Shallower water conditions for the deposition of the upper member are …

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Chehalem Mountains, Oregon, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed Al-Eisa Jan 1980

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Chehalem Mountains, Oregon, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed Al-Eisa

Dissertations and Theses

The Chehalem Mountains area, encompassing 70 square kilometers, is at the western extent of the Columbia River Basalt Group as mapped in western Oregon. The flows in the study area were identified as belonging to subdivisions of the Columbia River Basalt Group on the basis of physical characteristics and trace element geochemistry. The basalt flows are poorly exposed in the area and weathering is deep and extensive where the flows have been exposed. Where erosion has exposed the underlying marine sedimentary rocks, the basalt has failed in landslides.

Adaptative Alteration In Phospholipid Composition Of Plasma Membranes From A Somatic Cell Mutant Defective In The Regulation Of Cholesterol Biosynthesis, Michael Sinensky Jan 1980

Adaptative Alteration In Phospholipid Composition Of Plasma Membranes From A Somatic Cell Mutant Defective In The Regulation Of Cholesterol Biosynthesis, Michael Sinensky

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

A somatic cell mutant (CR1) of a Chinese hamster ovary cell (CHO-K1) which has previously been shown to be defective in the regulation of cholesterol biosynthesis accumulates more cholesterol than the parental cell line in plasma membranes. Although such an increase in membrane cholesterol should lead to an increase in the order parameter of these membranes, as measured with an electron spin resonance spin probe, the order parameters of mutant and wild-type plasma membranes are identical--apparently because of an adaptive alteration in membrane phospholipid composition. The phospholipid compositions of mutant and wild-type cell plasma membranes are compared and the mutant …

An Information Theoretic Approach To The Construction Of Efficient Decision Trees, Jaime M. De Faria, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Carl L. Gerberich, Pramod Varshney Jan 1980

An Information Theoretic Approach To The Construction Of Efficient Decision Trees, Jaime M. De Faria, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Carl L. Gerberich, Pramod Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

This paper treats the problem of construction of efficient decision trees. Construction of optimal decision trees is an NP-complete problem and, therefore, a heuristic approach for the design of efficient decision trees is considered. The approach is based on information theoretic concepts and the proposed algorithm provides us with a simple procedure for the construction of near-optimal decision trees.

This placed the expedition in the heart of the cave region, and a number of new caves and shafts were discovered and explored. The main discovery was the Still Waters Cave, located near Accompong, where 11,800 feet of …

Forest, Animal, And Seasonal Cycles Observed In Vernal Ponds At Audubon Center, Michael Link Jan 1980

Forest, Animal, And Seasonal Cycles Observed In Vernal Ponds At Audubon Center, Michael Link

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Observations of environmental conditions and biota in four depressed spots, called "vernal ponds", within the Northwoods Audubon Center near Sandstone, Minnesota, are reported for the period March 15 to September 4, 1977. Life cycle dynamics and utilization of the pond areas are considered in relation to time, days of the month, moisture-dryness, and species; but are lumped together for reporting as if the four locations were a single pond entity. Hypotheses as to the role of these ponds in the surrounding ecosystem and questions for possible further investigation are suggested.

A Comparative Water Quality Study Of Man-Made Drainage And Natural Streams, Kent W. Boyum Jan 1980

A Comparative Water Quality Study Of Man-Made Drainage And Natural Streams, Kent W. Boyum

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The effects of man-made drainage systems on the water quality of receiving bodies Is relatively unknown. During the ice-free season of 1979, thirteen drainage ditches and f our rivers were sampled at intervals of three to eight days. With increasing flow, total orthophosphatephosphorous, total Kjeldahl-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen and total dissolved solids increased, but not proportionately to f low, with total orthophosphate-phosphorous showing the least proportionality. Variation was observed in each ditch and river when broken down seasonally for each parameter. Generally, when the percentage of flow was greater in one of the three seasons, the percentage of each of the other …

Land-Cover Changes In A River Valley In Blue Earth County, Minnesota, 1938-1974, Corrie Schaffer Cowley Jan 1980

Land-Cover Changes In A River Valley In Blue Earth County, Minnesota, 1938-1974, Corrie Schaffer Cowley

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The boundary of the Blue Earth River Valley was determined by stereoscopic viewing of 1938-39 aerial photographs. The same boundary was then drawn on corresponding 1974 photographs. All area within the river valley was assigned to one of four land-cover. Comparison of 1938-39 to 1974 shows a decrease of 19 percent in river area, an increase of one percent in row crop area, an increase of 52 percent in tree area, and a decrease of 45 percent in scrub area.

A Survey Of Water Flow In Drainage Ditches And Streams In South Central Minnesota, Clay Pierce, Bill Thompson Jan 1980

A Survey Of Water Flow In Drainage Ditches And Streams In South Central Minnesota, Clay Pierce, Bill Thompson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Discharge was monitored on 13 agricultural drainage ditches and 4 small rivers in south central Minnesota. Derived data were categorized by response to hydrologic events and stream order. Stream order was found to be the most reliable predictor of hydrologic event response. Peak flows in drainage ditches were found to correspond to peak flows in rivers.
