Gas Phase Hydrogen Permeation In Alpha Titanium And Carbon Steels, Donald L. Johnson, Kiritkumar K. Shah, Bruce H. Reeves, Vijay L. Gadgeel
Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications
Commercially pure titanium rods were machined into hollow cylinders and gas-phase permeation and diffusion measurements obtained with a quadrupole residual gas analyzer at temperatures between 400-800°C and pressures between 0.533 and 266.6 Nrn-2. Pressure dependence measurements established that phase boundary reactions as well as lattice diffusion control the transport process. Lag-time data yield excellent agreement with the diffusivity data of Wasilewski and Kehl and Papazoglou and Hepworth for the case where phase boundary reactions are taken into account. The best value of the diffusivity is D = 2.1 x 10-2 exp (-50,40O/RT). Analysis of lag-time data reveals …
Energry Loss Through Storage, Richard C. Heyser
Energry Loss Through Storage, Richard C. Heyser
Unpublished Writings
Richard C. Heyser prepared this article for submission in Science magazine. The process of storing energy under equilibrium conditions loses work that could have been obtained directly from the source of energy. This is independent of the form of the energy and can be extended to the analysis of situations otherwise difficult to formulate in a common description, such as multiple energy conversions involving solar, electrical, chemicl, and mechanical storage.
Understanding Energy, Richard C. Heyser
Understanding Energy, Richard C. Heyser
Unpublished Writings
In this paper, Richard C. Heyser explains how the conservation of total energy, the law stating that energy can be neither created nor destroyed in any process, is the underlying principle behind measuring sound through time delay spectrometry (TDS).
Adaptative Alteration In Phospholipid Composition Of Plasma Membranes From A Somatic Cell Mutant Defective In The Regulation Of Cholesterol Biosynthesis, Michael Sinensky
Adaptative Alteration In Phospholipid Composition Of Plasma Membranes From A Somatic Cell Mutant Defective In The Regulation Of Cholesterol Biosynthesis, Michael Sinensky
Michael Sinensky
A somatic cell mutant (CR1) of a Chinese hamster ovary cell (CHO-K1) which has previously been shown to be defective in the regulation of cholesterol biosynthesis accumulates more cholesterol than the parental cell line in plasma membranes. Although such an increase in membrane cholesterol should lead to an increase in the order parameter of these membranes, as measured with an electron spin resonance spin probe, the order parameters of mutant and wild-type plasma membranes are identical--apparently because of an adaptive alteration in membrane phospholipid composition. The phospholipid compositions of mutant and wild-type cell plasma membranes are compared and the mutant …

The Wild Turkey In Nebraska
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
Fossilized remains indicate that prehistoric turkeys roamed the eastern and southwestern United States. Five different prehistoric turkeys have been described that lived during the Pleistocene period some 15,000 to 50,000 years ago.
While early man, the paleo-Indians, preyed primarily upon larger animals for food and fiber, birds were also preyed upon, as evidenced by artifacts of later man. The wild turkey is believed to have played important roles in the cultures of pre-Columbian Indians, especially in Mexico and the southwestern United States. Historical records and archeological findings indicate that extensive domestication of the wild turkey existed throughout the southwestern United …

Large-Angle Electron-Photon Coincidence Experiment In Atomic Hydrogen, E. Weigold, L. Frost, K. (Kaare) J. Nygaard
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
1s-2p excitation in hydrogen has been studied by observing the angular correlation of Lyman photons detected in coincidence with inelastically scattered electrons at 54.4 eV incident energy. The electron scattering angles ranged from 10°to 133°; the results at scattering angles larger than 20°cannot be explained by currently available theories. © 1980 The American Physical Society.
Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics Of Fuel Cells: Heat Release Mechanisms And Voltage, Gerald Wilemski
Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics Of Fuel Cells: Heat Release Mechanisms And Voltage, Gerald Wilemski
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nonequilibrium thermodynamics is used to analyze the spatial distribution of heat release mechanisms occurring in fuel cells operating under load in nonisothermal steady states. Novel contributions to heat release in the bulk electrolyte are found which are analogous to Peltier and Thomson effects in metallic conductors. Expresions for the heat release at individual electrodes are presented. An equation for the voltage of these cells is also derived. © 1980 American Institute of Physics.

Theoretical Lattice-Dynamical Studies Of The Incommensurate Phase Transformation In K2Seo4, M. S. Haque, John R. Hardy
Theoretical Lattice-Dynamical Studies Of The Incommensurate Phase Transformation In K2Seo4, M. S. Haque, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
We have made detailed lattice-dynamical studies of the origin of the incommensurate phase transition in potassium selenate. These were based on a rigid-ion model with Coulomb interactions, and also short-range interactions between restricted numbers of close neighbors. The associated short-range force constants were determined using the static equilibrium conditions for the crystal and the observed Raman frequencies. The calculations were made for the room temperature structure using the quasiharmonic approximation in which the effects of varying temperature were simulated by varying the short-range force constants. In this way we were able to show that the crystal has a low-frequency optic …
The Effect Of Dissolution Of Volcanic Glass On The Water Chemistry In A Tuffaceous Aquifer, Rainier Mesa, Nevada, Art F. White, Hans C. Claassen, Larry Benson
The Effect Of Dissolution Of Volcanic Glass On The Water Chemistry In A Tuffaceous Aquifer, Rainier Mesa, Nevada, Art F. White, Hans C. Claassen, Larry Benson
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Geochemistry of ground water associated with the Tertiary tuffs within Rainier Mesa, southern Nevada, was investigated to determine the relative importance of glass dissolution in controlling water chemistry. Water samples were obtained both from interstitial pores in core sections and from free-flowing fractures. Cation compositions showed that calcium and magnesium decreased as a function of depth in the mesa, as sodium increased. The maximum effect occurs within alteration zones containing clinoptilolite and montmorillonite, suggesting these minerals effectively remove bivalent cations from the system.
Comparisons are made between compositions of ground waters found within Rainier Mesa that apparently have not reacted …
Stress Measurements At Depth In The Vicinity Of The San Andreas Fault: Implications For The Magnitude Of Shear Stress At Depth, Mark D. Zoback, Hiroaki Tsukahara, Stephen Hickman
Stress Measurements At Depth In The Vicinity Of The San Andreas Fault: Implications For The Magnitude Of Shear Stress At Depth, Mark D. Zoback, Hiroaki Tsukahara, Stephen Hickman
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Using the hydraulic fracturing technique, we have made a systematic series of in situ stress measurements in wells drilled near the San Andreas fault. In an attempt to provide constraints for the magnitude of shear stress on the San Andreas fault at depth we have measured both the variation of stress with distance from the fault in relatively shallow (~230 m) wells and the variation of stress with depth in a ~ 1 km-deep well located 4 km from the fault. The shallow wells are located along profiles roughly perpendicular to the fault in the western Mojave desert near Palmdale …

Actinocyclus Ingens Var. Nodus : A New, Stratigraphically Useful Diatom Of The Circum-North Pacific, Jack G. Baldauf, John A. Barron
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Actinocyclus ingens var, nodus Baldauf, n, var., is a morphologically distinct variety of the Miocene diatom A. ingens Ranray. The last occurrence of this new taxon approximates the top of the lower Middle Miocene Denticula Iauta Zone in the circum-North Pacific. Its first occurrence appears to be in the lower part of the D. fauta zone and possibly lies close to the Lower Miocene-Middle Miocene boundary.

On The Evaluation Of Powers And Monomials, Nicholas Pippenger
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Let $y_1 , \cdots ,y_p $ be monomials over the indeterminates $x_1 , \cdots ,x_q $. For every $y = (y_1 , \cdots ,y_p )$ there is some minimum number $L(y)$ of multiplications sufficient to compute $y_1 , \cdots ,y_p $ from $x_1 , \cdots ,x_q $ and the identity 1. Let $L(p,q,N)$ denote the maximum of $L(y)$ over all $y$ for which the exponent of any indeterminate in any monomial is at most $N$. We show that if $p = (N + 1^{o(q)} )$ and $q = (N + 1^{o(p)} )$, then $L(p,q,N) = \min \{ p,q\} \log N …
Comparative Schematology And Pebbling With Auxiliary Pushdowns, Nicholas J. Pippenger
Comparative Schematology And Pebbling With Auxiliary Pushdowns, Nicholas J. Pippenger
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
This paper has three claims to interest. First, it combines comparative schematology with complexity theory. This combination is capable of distinguishing among Strong's “languages of maximal power,” a distinction not possible when comparative schematology is based on computability considerations alone, and it is capable of establishing exponential disparities in running times, a capability not currently possessed by complexity theory alone. Secondly, this paper inaugurates the study of pebbling with auxiliary pushdowns, which bears to plain pebbling the same relationship as Cook's study of space-bounded machines with auxiliary pushdowns bears to plain space-bounded machines. This extension of pebbling serves as the …
Two Point Boundary Value Problem With Jumping Nonlinearities, Alfonso Castro
Two Point Boundary Value Problem With Jumping Nonlinearities, Alfonso Castro
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We prove that a certain two point BVP with jumping nonlinearities has a solution. Our result generalizes that of [2]. We use variational methods which permit giving a minimax characterization of the solution. Our proof exposes the similarities between the variational behavior of this problem and that of other semilinear problems with noninvertible linear part (see [5]).
