A Micro-Analytical Technique For Determination Of Aluminum In Aqueous Solutions, John B. Brady, John D. Frantz

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

A flow-cell colorimetric technique has been developed by which Al concentrations of 0.0003to 0.1 wt. percent can be analyzed in one-microliter fluid samples. An A1-complexing reagent (Ferron) continuously flowing through teflon capillary tubing is spiked with one-microliter aliquots of solutions containing A1. The sample reacts with the reagent and subsequently passes through a microcolorimeter. Measurement of less than one nanomole A1 is possible by comparing the integrated absorbance of unknown samples with standard solutions.

A Study Of The Photolysis Of O-Methyl Podocarpinitrile Oxide, Dianne Marie Hunter Jan 1980

A Study Of The Photolysis Of O-Methyl Podocarpinitrile Oxide, Dianne Marie Hunter

Dissertations and Theses

The photolytic reaction of 0-methyl podocarpinitrile oxide to yield the δ-lactam (shown below) was studied under various conditions such as: solvent (hexane, methanol), mercury lamp wattage (lOOW, 450W), filter (Pyrex, Corex, Vycor), and additives (dichloromethane, hexafluorobenzene). The reactions were analyzed with IR, NMR and HPLC. Preparative medium pressure liquid chromatography and TLC were used in the δ-lactam isolation. The conditions resulting in the optimum yield of δ-lactam were determined. The photolytic stability of the δ-lactam under the conditions in which it was formed indicated that it was relatively stable only in hexane.

The possibility of increasing the amount of readily accessible surface area by enlarging the 5 A pore was examined via pretreating the PSOC-371 coal with gases such as nitrogen, nitrogen-oxygen, and ozone-oxygen and hydrogen peroxide solutions. Surface areas were obtained from nitrogen adsorption at 77 K and carbon dioxide adsorption at either 298 or 195 K for each sample before and after treatment.

Transport Of Ozone Across An Air/Water Interface Coupled With Aqueous Decomposition, Ahmad Ali Mehrabzadeh Jan 1980

Transport Of Ozone Across An Air/Water Interface Coupled With Aqueous Decomposition, Ahmad Ali Mehrabzadeh

Dissertations and Theses

Photoacoustic spectroscopy was used to analyze the transport of ozone through the air/water interface. Experimental results showed that the ozone transport rate is similar to rates measured for other gases of low solubility and low reactivity. The transport rate increases with increasing pH. The decomposition rate of ozone was studied in solutions. The decomposition rate also depends on the pH of the solution, and in high pHs both the deposition velocity and the decomposition rate constant of ozone have larger values. The value of the deposition velocity (Kd) is 3.7 ± .9 x 10-3 cm/sec and the decomposition rate …

Fossil Algae In The St. Louis Limestone, Near St. Louis, Missouri, Sherris Ragsdale Myers

Masters Theses

"Although Mississippian algae research is fairly extensive, little has been published on algae from the Mississippian type locality, the Upper Mississippi River Valley. For this study, portions of sixteen St. Louis Limestone stratigraphic sections containing units with oncolites, domal stromatolites, laminations, or mottled (possibly algal) textures, were measured, described, and sampled to determine: (1) to what extent algae are preserved in the St. Louis Limestone, (2) if enough of the delicate structure was fossilized to determine morphology, (3) depositional environment of the algae, and (4) if the algae are related to a lithologic pattern. Thin sections of the sampled units …

Water And Ice Nucleation Sites From Ion Implantation Of Silicon, William H. Stlnebaugh, Don M. Sparlin, James L. Kassner Jan 1980

Water And Ice Nucleation Sites From Ion Implantation Of Silicon, William H. Stlnebaugh, Don M. Sparlin, James L. Kassner

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ion implantation has a substantial effect on the heterogeneous nucleation of water and ice. An enhancement of water nucleation and a suppression of ice nucleation occurred for samples of silicon implanted with ions of various species and dosage. These effects were noticeable only for samples implanted with ion doses approaching or exceeding the critical dose necessary to produce amorphous silicon. The behavior of the water droplet and ice crystal growth can be related to the amount of ion produced damage to the substrate surface. The nature of the damage can be controlled by variation of the incident ion species, dose, …

Influence Of Planting System On Surface Soil, Physical Conditions And Soil Water Relations, D Tennant

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Influence of planting system on surface soil, physical conditions and soil water relations. The availability of soil water for crop use can this way be influenced by planting system. Various aspects of soil water relations were examined in varying detail at three sites - Wongan Hills, Avondale and Merredin, over the 1979 and 1980 growing seasons. Some of this soil water data are presented here. The Department of Agriculture initiated a programme in 1977 to investigate and compare crop performance under several planting systems. This project was part of this programme and had as its objectives: 1. Measurement of soil …

Iue Observations Of Circumstellar Emission From The Late Type Variable R Aquarii (M7 + Pec), A. G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos, R. W. Hobbs

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

IUE observations of R Aquarii (M7 + pec) have been obtained in low dispersion in order to study its circumstellar emission. Strong permitted, semiforbidden, and forbidden emission lines are identified that are superposed on a bright ultraviolet continuum. From our analysis we deduce that the strong emission-line spectrum that involves C III], C IV, Si III], [0 II], and [0 III] probably arises from a dense compact nebula the size of which is comparable to the binary system of which R Aqr is the primary star. Low-excitation emission lines of Fe II, Mg II, 0 1, and Si II suggest …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Photoluminescence of cw laser-annealed silicon shows a dramatic difference in electronic behavior of the reconstructed material depending upon either creation or suppression of dislocations. Beyond a critical exposure time slip appears, and the luminescence of these samples is dominated by dislocation-related defect levels.

Federal Protection Of Unique Environmental Interests: Endangered And Threatened Species, Ronald H. Rosenberg Jan 1980

Federal Protection Of Unique Environmental Interests: Endangered And Threatened Species, Ronald H. Rosenberg

Faculty Publications

Endangered species protection has long been favored by many Americans, who watched regretfully as the numbers of American eagles, buffaloes and other species dwindled toward extinction. Only recently, however, has species protection become a matter of public controversy, subsumed in the more general "development v. environment" debate. In this Article, Professor Rosenberg surveys the federal government's role in species protection, with a special focus on the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Prompted by the much-publicized Supreme Court decision in the "snail darter case"--TVA v. Hill-Congress extensively amended the Act in 1978. After a detailed analysis of these amendments, Professor Rosenberg …

Some Historical Accounts Of The Natural Conditions In Tampa Bay And Hillsborough County, Michael Heerschap Jan 1980

Some Historical Accounts Of The Natural Conditions In Tampa Bay And Hillsborough County, Michael Heerschap

Reports

As we might expect as we read on in the literature we find that as Tampa grows, then the animals and fish which were so abundant slowly disappear. An interesting feature of these accounts are the stores told of mass killings of animals and birds for no reason except for fun. Also included are some tales of our notorious insect life and thundershowers. This report is a collection of some of the more interesting quotes from various sources.

Kepone Monitoring At Skiffs Creek : In Fulfillment Of Contract Number Dacw65-79-C-0027, Harold D. Sloan, Michael E. Bender

Reports

Kepone entered the James River estuary from point sources of production and through runoff from unauthorized disposal sites in the vicinity of Hopewell, Virginia. The total quantity of Kepone released to the river is not known, however, about 1.5 x 106 kg were produced between 1966 and 1975. At present we estimate that 30,000 kg reside in contaminated sediments of the estuary.

Bed sediments are contaminated from the source at Hopewell to Hampton Roads, a distance of 88 kilometers. Patterns of contamination vary with sediment type and distance from the source. Major Kepone sinks exist in the Jamestown - Dancing …

Elizabeth River Surface Circulation Atlas, John C. Munday Jr., Hayden H. Gordon, Charles J. Alston Jan 1980

Elizabeth River Surface Circulation Atlas, John C. Munday Jr., Hayden H. Gordon, Charles J. Alston

Reports

The Elizabeth River Surface Circulation Atlas is a compendium of maps which detail the surface circulation throughout the main branch of the Elizabeth River, in the port of Hampton Roads, Virginia. Data for the Atlas maps were obtained directly from field experiments using Remote Sensing and dye-emitting low-windage surface drogues. The maps show surface Lagrangian trajectories under various combinations of wind and tide. The Atlas is not intended to duplicate NOAA tidal current tables, but rather to supplement the tables with empirical trajectory data at increased spatial resolution. Knowledge of surface currents under different tide and wind conditions enables a …

Autooscillations And Nonlinear Anelasticity, Manfred Wuttig, Tetsuro Suzuki Jan 1980

Autooscillations And Nonlinear Anelasticity, Manfred Wuttig, Tetsuro Suzuki

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In conclusion it can be stated that a novel phenomenon, a mechanical auto oscillation, has been described theoretically and shown to exist experimentally. These auto oscillations occur when a nonlinear anelastic solid is forced into large amplitude oscillations in the vicinity of a martensitic transformation. They manifest themselves as a low frequency auto modulation of the a martensitic transformation. They manifest themselves as low frequency auto modulation of the forced vibration of such a solid. © 1980.
