Solid State Phase Transitions And Molecular Reorientation In Ortho-Carborane And Para-Carborane: An Isomer Effect, Peter A. Beckmann, Amos J. Leffler

The proton nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times at 30 MHz have been measured for ortho- and paracarborane between 170 and 310 K and between 210 and 320 K, respectively. Para-carborane undergoes solid-solid transitions at about 300 and 238 K while the ortho isomer shows only one transition at about 265 K. The details of the phase transitions are discussed and molecular reorientation in the isomers is compared.

The deuterium magnetic resonance spectra of lamellar phases of host perdeuterated potassium palmitate mixed with varying amounts of guest protiated potassium octanoate and behenate and 86.3 mol% D₂O are reported. At higher temperatures, the short chain guests give rise to more fluidity and the long chain guests give rise to less fluidity towards the end of the host chain. At low temperatures there are changes in the interaction between the polar head group and the water which depend on sample composition. The present study ln male Wistar rats was designed to rate and analyze six specific cocaine-induced behaviors. These behavioral parameters have been defined by others as either dopaminergic (sniffing, grooming, and locomotor activity) or serotonergic (repetitive head movements, rearing, and Straub tail) in origin.

Results were analyzed by analysis of variance in two ways : (i) as grouped dopaminergic or serotonergic scores, and (ii) as the net behavioral index (dopaminergic scores minus the serotonergic scores). The purpose of approaching the data in this way was to attempt to define the behavioral interactions of the two neurotransmitters.

A graphical procedure is presented for calculating first order transition matrices for a general (open-shell) atom. The first order transition matrix may be used to calculate matrix elements of a general one-body operator of rank λ in orbital space and σ in spin space. In the random phase approximation we obtain a set of N + N′ coupled differential equations for N final state radial functions and N′ initial state radial functions which completely determine the first order transition matrix for an atomic system having N final state channels. The phytoplankton of Goose Lake, an oligohaline lake on Parramore Island, was studied for one year. The populations consisted primarily of ultraplankton and nanoplankton-sized forms with diatoms and chlorophyceans dominant most of the year. A general pattern of seasonally higher cell concentrations in early summer and fall was noted, with an unidentified ultraplankton-sized component prominent throughout the collection period. A list of 154 species is given.

We report here geochemical studies of Hawaiian tholeiites and ultramafic xenoliths from Salt Lake Crater, Oahu. We focus attention on tholeiitic basalts that comprise the bulk of Hawaiian volcanoes. When the samples are screened to include only those lying neat the log-MgO (about 7 percent) end of olivine-control lines (Wright, 1971), tholeiites from individual volcanoes are remarkably uniform. On this basis, we show that, for tholeiites from six volcanoes, systematic geochemical differences exist that cannot be attributed to differentiation of these magmas from a common parental magma. Inhibition Of N⁸-Acetylspermidine Deacetylation Activity Of Rat Liver, Michael J. Santacroce

An enzyme activity located in the soluble fraction of rat liver which is known to deacetylate N⁸-acetylspermidine is studied. Using a crude cytosol preparation from rat liver, tritium-labelled N⁸-acetylspermidine [acetyl-³H] was shown to undergo deacetylation which was dependent upon both time of incubation and protein concentration. The Michalis constant for this deacetylation of N⁸-acetylspermidine is approximately 4.4 μM.

N¹-Acetylspermidine showed a competitive inhibition of this N⁸-acetylspermidine deacetylation activity, and was found to be the most potent inhibitor tested. Diamine and polyamine compounds were also shown to inhibit the …

The Neoglacial fluctuations of two of Mt. Baker's alpine glaciers were studied by tephrochronologic, dendrochronologic, and relative dating methods coupled with detailed geologic mapping. The earliest recognizable advance of the Deming Glacier occurred prior to deposition of Mazama tephra and after the Vashon Stade of Fraser Glaciation. The oldest recognizable Holocene advance of the Deming Glacier occurred >800 years B.P. and 16th, 17th, 18th(?), early 19th, late 19th, and 20th centuries. The Neoglacial record for the Rainbow Glacier is poorly preserved due to modification by two historic rock-debris avalanches, but the 20th century moraines of the Rainbow and Deming Glaciers …

Engineers at the Utah Water Research Laboratory and the Mechanical Engineering Department at Utah State University have investigated the use of groundwater heat pumps for residential space heating and cooling in the Utah climate. They have found that this type of system conserves energy and may cost less for Utah home owners to operate than many conventional heating and cooling systems. Since the use of groundwater heat pumps will probably become more widespread in the near future, building and heating contractors should become more informed about what a groundwater heat pump is and how it works. Executive Summary: The Surface Impoundment Assessment process presented an organized consistent systme for evaluating potential threats to groundwater resources from surface impoundments of wastes. This assessment established a data base which locates wastes surface impoundments in Utah and assesses the majority of these impoundments with this prescribed system (Appendix F). This data base may be used to identify surface impoundments in Utah which may create problems with regard to groundwater contamination. The design and performance of a vacuum lift, solar powered water pump is discussed. The basic design consists of an expanding gaseous piston confined inside a chamber which is located in series with, and between an inlet and an outlet check value. The gas is generated by volatilizing cyclopentane or hexane. Four variations of this basic design concept were built and evaluated. The various features of each are discussed. The flood magnitude for a given frequency or return period is estimated by fitting a probability distribution to the historical annual flood series. The log-Pearson type III distribution has been selected by the Water Resources Council for general use by the federal government, but practitioners should examine an annual flood series and use alternative distributions where they will produce better estimates. Empirical goodness of fit is one criterion for choosing a distribution, but the reasonableness of the assumptions theoretically associated with the form of the distribution should also be considered. This summary completion report describes the project work completed in three areas: 1) the development and preliminary testing of drought severity and vulnerability indices, 2) the impacts of Utah's 1977 drought, and 3) an operation comparison of stochastic streamflow models. The drought indices were evaluated for three municipal and three irrigation water supply systems in Utah. It was concluded that a continuous loss function to define the effects of water shortage would be more appropriate than the existing assumption that drought-related lossed occur suddenly at a certain degree of water shortage. While it has been called "the crime of the century" and outlawed in Pennsylvania, the governments of the dry, western part of the United States continue to spend tax revenues on cloud seeding to increase water supplies. Circulation of the Fort Pierce Inlet and adjacent portions of the Indian River on Florida's Central East Coast was investigated during a 2 yr period. The currents were predominantly tidally driven, with wind effects becoming more important in the shallower areas of the Indian River and with increasing distance from the Inlet area. Variations in the salinity structure of the waters in the inlet area occur largely with the tidal stage.
