Magnetically Dilute Metallic Glasses. Ii. 4F Moments, G.R. Gruzalski, David J. Sellmyer Jul 1979

Magnetically Dilute Metallic Glasses. Ii. 4F Moments, G.R. Gruzalski, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic-susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements are presented for amorphous Zr40Cu600-xMx (M denoting Gd and Tb), with x ranging from zero to ten. Effective moments of magnetic solutes were determined by fitting susceptibility data to the Curie-Weiss expression. The moments of Gd and Tb are very close to those expected for trivalent ions and the paramagnetic Weiss temperatures are positive. Saturation did not occur in any of the samples, even at 80 kOe and 1.3 K; however, the alloys containing Gd approached normalized magnetization values of unity. High-field hysteresis loops were used to obtain the …

Magnetically Dilute Metallic Glasses. I. 3D Moments, G.R. Gruzalski, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic-susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements are presented for amorphous Zr40Cu50M10 (M denoting Fe, Mn) and Nb50Ni50-xFex, with x ranging from zero to about ten. Curie-Weiss fits to the susceptibility data were made to determine effective moments peff and paramagnetic Weiss temperatures, ⊖. The small values of peff suggest the presence of moment instabilities depending on local environment, and the negative ⊖ values suggest antiferromagnetic local-moment-conduction-electron interactions. The Fe alloys develop hysteresis at low temperatures indicating the presence of a magnetically ordered state. These alloys can be …

Direct Relation Between Fresnel’S Interface Reflection Coefficients For The Parallel And Perpendicular Polarizations, R. M.A. Azzam Jul 1979

Direct Relation Between Fresnel’S Interface Reflection Coefficients For The Parallel And Perpendicular Polarizations, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

We have found a significant relation, rp = rs (rs -cos2ϕ)/(1-rs cos2ϕ), between Fresnel’s interface complex-amplitude reflection coefficients rp and rs for the parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) polarizations at the same angle of incidence ϕ. This relation is universal in that it applies to reflection at all interfaces between homogeneous isotropic media collectively and, of course, throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. We investigate the properties of this function, rp = f (rs), and its inverse,rs = g (rp), as …

Isomerization And Dehydrocyclization Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Thomas E. Marcinkowski Jul 1979

Isomerization And Dehydrocyclization Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Thomas E. Marcinkowski

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Piperylene concentrate is a complex mixture of 5-carbon unsaturated hydrocarbons obtained as a by-product when naphtha or gas oils are cracked. The major component in this mixture is 1,3-pentadiene. During the course of this study, a number of trials, utilizing liquid phase reaction conditions, were made to investigate the geometric isomerization of 1,3-pentadiene and its separation from the piperylene concentrate. Isomerization was accomplished employing catalytic amounts of iodine at temperatures ranging from 0°C to reflux. Using this method, the maximum amount of trans-1,3-pentadiene obtained was 70% as compared to 51% in the piperylene concentrate. Recovery of the product was 90%, …

Vims-Blm Second Order Wave Climate Model And Wave Climatology Of Baltimore Canyon Trough Shelf Area, Victor Goldsmith Jul 1979

Vims-Blm Second Order Wave Climate Model And Wave Climatology Of Baltimore Canyon Trough Shelf Area, Victor Goldsmith

Reports

The Wave Climate Model of the Baltimore Canyon Trough Shelf area encompassing the designated lease blocks was extended, refined, and comparisons made with real wave data, as part of this year's contract (Figures 15-la and 15-lb). This modified model w.as produced to refine the 1975 model so that more definitive statements and interpretations could be concluded, based on more detailed data, in the evaluation of the baseline data. A set of computer-generated graphics utilizing a greater depth data point density (0.25 NM), to al.low site-specific evaluation of conditions within the lease block area, were produced.

Efficient Employment Of Cohorts Of Labor In The U.S. Economy: An Illustration Of A Method, A. E. Boardman, Steven M. Miller, A. P. Schinnar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a model for the analysis of efficient labor force participation in the U.S. economy. Ridge regression estimates of the elasticities of cohorts of labor, classified by sex and occupation, are used in conjunction with wage data to illustrate the derivation of efficient allocation of labor cohorts in five economic sectors. These efficient constructs are compared with actual census data for 1960 and 1970. The results, while tentative, show a trend toward more efficient utilization of labor and greater participation by women in the work force.

An Analysis Of A New Partizan Game Using Combinatorial Techniques, James Snodgrass Iii Jul 1979

An Analysis Of A New Partizan Game Using Combinatorial Techniques, James Snodgrass Iii

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

John Horton Conway's combinatorial game theory was applied to a new partizan game with a complete analysis as the result. Mathematical values were assigned to the countably infinite number of positions in the game. Direct computation of the first eight values and extension via the Principle of Mathematical Induction made the assignments possible.

Examination of these values (which repeat with period 2) shows that the game, played on a strip of squares, can be won by the first player if the strip is of odd length and can be won by the second player if the strip is of even …

Feeding Morphologies And Distribution Patterns Of Marine Cladocera In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Sandra Layne Gilchrist Jul 1979

Feeding Morphologies And Distribution Patterns Of Marine Cladocera In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Sandra Layne Gilchrist

OES Theses and Dissertations

Temporal and spatial distributions of marine cladocera in the lower Chesapeake Bay estuary were observed over a year-long sampling period. The distributions of cladoceran species throughout the Bay were studied in relation to temperature and salinity. A survey of the species over the entire Bay is included to establish distribution patterns of the various species during a short time period.

Theoretical mathematical principles were used to predict feeding abilities of the Bay species. Mouthparts are described qualitatively and quantitatively to infer function. A mandibular index developed by Itoh (1970) was revised and employed in evaluating feeding methods interspecifically and interspecifically. …

OES Theses and Dissertations

The ichthyoplankton of Hempstead Bay estuary was sampled from December 1972 to mid March 1974. Eleven stations were sampled by towing a 0.5 meter diameter plankton net. Eggs were most abundant during June and July with an average concentration calculated to be above 5,500/100m3. Egg densities were the lowest during the fall and winter. Larvae were most frequently taken from March through July with densities varying greatly among the samples. The eggs of Brevoortia tyrannus, Anchoa mitchilli, Tautoga onitis, Tautogolabrus adspersus, and Scophthalmus aguosus and the larvae of Menidia menidia, Ammodvtes hexapterus and Pseudopleuronectes americanus constituted most …

Stochastic Parameters In Compartmental Systems And Structural Identification, Jerome Eisenfeld Jul 1979

Stochastic Parameters In Compartmental Systems And Structural Identification, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

Let [see pdf for notation] denote the mean time a particle resides in i having started in j and let [see pdf for notation] denote the probability that a particle reaches i from j. These parameters, expressed in terms of the fractional transfer coefficients, provide an interpretation and a representation of the transfer function which are useful for determining the identifiable parameters in an input-output experiment. In particular the transfer function is expressed in terms of other transfer functions which represent smaller subsystems along the flow.

A Survey Of Certain K-Sample Test Procedures With Applications To Lpr-5 Data, Danny D. Dyer Jul 1979

A Survey Of Certain K-Sample Test Procedures With Applications To Lpr-5 Data, Danny D. Dyer

Mathematics Technical Papers

When dealing with k independent samples, it is frequently of interest to jointly assess the underlying population distributions. Usually such an assessment is carried out by performing k independent tests; that is, we test the null hypothesis [see pdf for notation] that the population from which the [see pdf for notaion] sample was drawn has some specified distribution. Combining the results of such independent tests may then be carried out by Fisher's method (1950, pp. 99-101). Specifically, let Ti be the test statistic associated with the [see pdf for notaion] sample. Suppose large values of Ti are considered critical for …

The Geology And Geochemistry Of The North Fork Stock, Northeastern Oregon, David Joseph Matty Jun 1979

The Geology And Geochemistry Of The North Fork Stock, Northeastern Oregon, David Joseph Matty

Dissertations and Theses

The North Fork stock is a composite intrusive body of Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous age which outcrops in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. The upper 600 m of the intrusion are exposed over an area of approximately 36 km2 along the canyon walls of the North Fork of the John Day River in Grant and Umatilla counties. The stock intrudes metasediments, metavolcanics, and metagabbros associated with the Permian-Triassic Elkhorn Ridge Argillite. Contact metamorphism of the Elkhorn Ridge Argillite is developed to the hornblende-hornfels facies throughout most of the exposed area of this unit in the study area. The contact …

Thermal Effects On The Optical Spectra Of A Polydiacetylene: Poly{1,2-Bis [4-(Isopropylcarbamoyloxy) -N-Butyl]-1-Buten-3-Ynylene}, H. Eckhardt, Craig J. Eckhardt, K.C. Yee Jun 1979

Thermal Effects On The Optical Spectra Of A Polydiacetylene: Poly{1,2-Bis [4-(Isopropylcarbamoyloxy) -N-Butyl]-1-Buten-3-Ynylene}, H. Eckhardt, Craig J. Eckhardt, K.C. Yee

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

The reflection spectra of single crystals of the polydiacetylene, IPUDO [R= (CH2)4OCONHCH (CH3)2], were measured between 25° C and 160° C. A nearly reversible thermochromic change is observed together with a variation of hysteresis upon cycling. The latter is attributed to annealing that permits the pendant groups to adopt a conformation which favors the butatriene-type configuration of the polymer at high temperatures. Intensities of the high and low temperature spectra obtained by Kramers–Kronig transforms are in excellent agreement with the spectral intensities of polydiacetylenes which are prototypes for the two configurations.

Mathematics In The Christian Philosophy Of Life, C. Ralph Verno Jun 1979

Mathematics In The Christian Philosophy Of Life, C. Ralph Verno

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

It is universally agreed that mathematics is important, that it is indeed very significant in life. This would be admitted even by those who are ignorant of or who dislike mathematics. There would be much less agreement, however, about why mathematics is important or significant. Such disagreement exists even more among mathematicians and mathematics educators. Unhappily many of the Christians who think about such things (and there are not very many who think about them at all) basically share the utilitarian view of many non-Christian thinkers, although endeavoring to place it within a Christian context. They think it is wonderful …

Brief Position Paper For Panel Discussion On Relation Of Mathematics And Christianity, C. Ralph Verno Jun 1979

Brief Position Paper For Panel Discussion On Relation Of Mathematics And Christianity, C. Ralph Verno

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

Some people view a conjoining of Christianity and Mathematics as improper. They miss the point of the relationship. The content of mathematics is not affected by Christianity. The relationship does not concern what, or how (the Christian doesn’t solve equations or differentiate differently), but it concerns why. It concerns such things as the interpretation and appreciation of the beauty, the symmetries, the coincidences, the remarkable properties, man’s creative role, etc. This paper explores the relationship between Christianity and mathematics as part of a panel discussion on the topic.
