Electronic Properties And Superconductivity Of Zr-Pd Glasses, G.R. Gruzalski, J.A. Gerber, David J. Sellmyer Apr 1979

Electronic Properties And Superconductivity Of Zr-Pd Glasses, G.R. Gruzalski, J.A. Gerber, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Electrical-resistivity measurements between 1.4 and 300 K and room-temperature magnetic-susceptibility measurements were performed on the metallic glasses ZrxPd1-x, for x=0.59, 0.63, 0.67, and 0.70. The samples, prepared by a modified hammer-anvil technique, exhibit negative temperature coefficients of the resistivity at temperatures from about 10 to 300 K. These data can be understood in terms of the extended Ziman theory if it is assumed that Zr and Pd contribute about 2 and 1 conduction electrons, respectively. Assuming that the magnetic susceptibility is a qualitative measure of the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, N …

Transformation Of Fresnel’S Interface Reflection And Transmission Coefficients Between Normal And Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam Apr 1979

Transformation Of Fresnel’S Interface Reflection And Transmission Coefficients Between Normal And Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

If w denotes an interface Fresnel reflection or transmission coefficient for s- or p-polarized light at an oblique angle of incidence ø, and z denotes the same coefficient at normal incidence, we find that w is an analytic function of z, w = ƒ(z), that depends on ø but not on the specific optical properties of the two media on both sides of the interface. All four functions that correspond to the four distinct Fresnel coefficients and their inverses are determined. We single out for detailed examination, as an example, the relationship between the reflection of s -polarized light at …

Changing Fields: Agricultural Land Use Changes In Nebraska 1925-1974, Donald A. Wilhite

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The series of graphs and maps which follow illustrate agricultural land use changes in Nebraska from 1925 to 1974. With these graphs and maps, the major agronomic crops of corn (dryland and irrigated), wheat, sorghum and soybeans are analyzed. The purpose of this analysis is to provide a pictorial history of Nebraska's ever-changing cropping system and, hopefully, to stimulate ideas and discussion with regard to trends and future directions. The Nebraska Water Resources Center is deeply interested in both the past and the future of Nebraska's agriculture because of the demands which agriculture places on the state's water resources. An …

Some Trends In Forecast Skill At The National Severe Storms Forecast Center, Allen Pearson, Steven J. Weiss Apr 1979

Some Trends In Forecast Skill At The National Severe Storms Forecast Center, Allen Pearson, Steven J. Weiss

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Tornado watch and severe local storm outlook verification statistics reveal the trends in forecast skill at the National Severe Storms Forecast Center. The skill level of the outlook has been steadily increasing since 1973. The percentage of watches verifying has been gradually increasing since 1970. While the probability of detection for tornadoes has decreased slightly since 1974, this appears to be highly correlated with the number of outbreak tornadoes reported in a given year. During significant tornado days, a much higher degree of skill is exhibited for both outlooks and watches. Factors influencing the results are discussed, including the impact …

Type Conversion In Electron‐Irradiated Gaas, J. W. Farmer, David C. Look Apr 1979

Type Conversion In Electron‐Irradiated Gaas, J. W. Farmer, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

The unambiguous type conversion of GaAs by electron irradiation is reported here for the first time. Several high‐quality n‐type vapor‐phase epitaxial layers (ρ?3 Ω cm and μ?7000 cm2/V sec at 300 K) were converted by 1‐MeV electrons to high‐quality p‐type layers (ρ?30 Ω cm and μ?400 cm2/V sec). Temperature‐dependent Hall‐effect data show energy levels at 0.5, 0.3, and about 0.1 eV above the valence band. Evidence is presented to indicate that the failure of some of our samples (and, perhaps, other samples reported in the literature) to convert to lowr …

Ca Ii H And K And Hydrogen-Line Variations In V471 Tauri (=Bd + 16°516), Terry D. Oswalt Apr 1979

Ca Ii H And K And Hydrogen-Line Variations In V471 Tauri (=Bd + 16°516), Terry D. Oswalt

Publications

Spectroscopic and narrow-band photoelectric observations of the white dwarf eclipsing binary V471 Tau (= BD + 16°516) are reported. Periodic fluctuations in Ca IIH and K emission and Ha absorption, and a wave-like distortion of the light curve mimic the characteristics of several well-observed RS CVn binaries. A probable correlation between maximum emission-line strength and wave minimum is shown to exist.

"The Global Hope Is Around": An Incident At Salem Sound, K. W. Mathews Apr 1979

"The Global Hope Is Around": An Incident At Salem Sound, K. W. Mathews

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

On February 6, 1978, in the midst of the worst blizzard to hit the Northeast in 100 years, the 682-foot Greek tanker GLOBAL HOPE with more than 340,000 gallons of oil aboard, dragged her anchor and grounded in Salem Sound, Massachusetts, about 15 miles from downtown Boston. An estimated 83,000 gallons of oil escaped the stricken vessel to be deposited on two of the most historic and picturesque coastlines of Massachusetts. Some 2.4 million dollars were expended from the federal pollution fund in cleanup efforts. This paper relates the chronology of events and examines peculiar problems, planning, and response activities …

Preparation Of A Polymer Supported Cobalt (Ii) Schiff Base Catalyst, Susan L. Fuhrman Apr 1979

Preparation Of A Polymer Supported Cobalt (Ii) Schiff Base Catalyst, Susan L. Fuhrman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Polystyrene bis(salicylaldehyde)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) (salen) and Polystyrene bis(acetylacetone)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) (BAE) were prepared stepwise from polystyrl chloride. The reaction series included substitution of the chloride with a malononitrile carbanion, reduction to a diamine, condensation to form a Schiff base, and complexation with Co(II) acetate to form the active polymeric material. Optimum conditions with regard to time, temperature, reaction ratios, and solvent were determined for each reaction. The ability of the polymer bound cobalt complex to oxidize 3-methyl indole was measure. The BAE catalyst yielded a large amount of the corresponding o-formylaminoacetophenone. However, the exact yield is not known because product …

Environmental Aspects Of The Nuclear Fuel Cycle And High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal, Robert S. Kent Apr 1979

Environmental Aspects Of The Nuclear Fuel Cycle And High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal, Robert S. Kent

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An assessment of the environmental effects of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is discussed, reactor waste inventory and standards are presented, and the alternatives for high-level radioactive waste disposal reviewed, with particular attention being given to disposal in deep geological formations on land. One of the major concerns regarding potential impacts of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is the lack of a definite and proven method of disposal of the high-level radioactive wastes from light water moderated reactors. The problem is expected to become more pressing as the nuclear power industry and the associated radioactive waste inventories grow in the …

On Identifiability Of Impulse-Response In Compartmental Systems, Jerome Eisenfeld Apr 1979

On Identifiability Of Impulse-Response In Compartmental Systems, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

Structural identifiability in compartmental systems deals with the map from impulse-response parameters to model parameters. If the data is analyzed in terms of integral transforms sk (Fourier, moments, etc) then we may study also the map from the sk to impulse-response parameters. This paper is mainly concerned with the latter correspondence. In other words we discuss the possibility of removing (inadvertently or intentionally) decay terms in the process of forming integral transforms.

The photoconductivity spectra of ultra-pure single crystals of CdS in the range 500-575 nm, CdSe in the range 700-900 nm, ZnSe in the range 420-570 nm and ZnS in the range 300-450 nm have been studied using an improved A.C. method of detection. The sensitivity of the apparatus is high enough to study weak photoconductors like ZnS. The photoconductivity spectrum of each substance showed a peak at the wavelength corresponding to the energy band gap of the substance. The energy band gaps obtained from the spectra are 2.35 eV for CdS, 1.6 eV for CdSe, 2.7 eVfor ZnSe and 3.6 …

Postglacial Environmental History Of A Marl Lake Site In Kalamazoo County, Southwestern Michigan, Valerie A. Naeve Apr 1979

Postglacial Environmental History Of A Marl Lake Site In Kalamazoo County, Southwestern Michigan, Valerie A. Naeve

Masters Theses

The depositional and ecological history of Oakland Bog, a relic Wisconsinan (16,500+300 years B.P.) lake site is interpreted from pollen stratigraphy, molluscan faunal assemblages and sediment facies. The lake basin, which probably formed after the melting of a late Wisconsinan buried ice block in the Kalamazoo Moraine Complex, is irregular, steep-sided and floored by glacial till. The till is overlain by as much as 7.6 meters of lacustrine marls which extend over an area of nearly 0.5 km2. Basal marls are characteristically medium gray, clayey, and contain abundant calcified stem fragments of charophytes; however, the overlying marls display …

Atomic Hydrogen In A Uniform Magnetic Field: Low-Lying Energy Levels For Fields Below 109 G, Anthony F. Starace, Gary L. Webster Apr 1979

Atomic Hydrogen In A Uniform Magnetic Field: Low-Lying Energy Levels For Fields Below 109 G, Anthony F. Starace, Gary L. Webster

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The wave function for an electron in combined Coulomb and uniform magnetic fields is expanded in oblatespheroidal angle functions. The resulting Schrödinger equation for the radial function is solved for the energy levels by means of two different adiabatic approximations, which yield rigorous lower and upper bounds on the lowest exact energy levels for each symmetry state of the system. Results are presented for the level and binding energies of hydrogenic 1s, 2s, and 2p levels for magnetic fields in the range 107B≲1011 G and compared with results of other …

The Effects Of Proton Irradiation On The Absorption Of Multi Component Glasses, Marcia Frances Bartusiak Apr 1979

The Effects Of Proton Irradiation On The Absorption Of Multi Component Glasses, Marcia Frances Bartusiak

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Three Schott glasses typically used in space technology - LaK 21, KzFS N4, and LF 5 -- were irradiated with 85 MeV protons. Induced absorption spectra were determined for each glass after varying fluences of radiation. It was found that the spectra for each glass can be fitted with three Gaussian shaped bands in the near ultraviolet-visible region, while a fourth Gaussian characterizes the absorption edge. For doses up to 107 rads, the dependence of the induced absorption a on total dose is accurately described by the saturating exponential function a(Φ)= as (1 - e--b Φ ) …

Kinetic Studies Of Polymer-Bound Rhodium (I) Hydrogenation Catalyst, Nee-Yin Chou Apr 1979

Kinetic Studies Of Polymer-Bound Rhodium (I) Hydrogenation Catalyst, Nee-Yin Chou

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

For many years, it has been customary to classify catalysts as homogeneous or heterogeneous. Generally, the former are more active and more selective. But the major disadvantage of the homogeneous catalysts is the need to separate the reaction products and to recover the catalyst, which is often somewhat more expensive than a "classical" heterogeneous catalyst. It has been considered, especially in the last ten years, that there might be advantages in chemically binding a homogeneous catalyst to a solid support.

Polymer-bound, anthranilic acid anchored rhodium (I) catalysts have been prepared. The rate of hydrogenation of cyclohexene has been studied quantitatively, …

Turbulence Spectra In A Well-Mixed Estuary, Jong Yul Chung Apr 1979

Turbulence Spectra In A Well-Mixed Estuary, Jong Yul Chung

OES Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an attempt to determine and describe some of the turbulent process in a well-mixed estuary. The processes are identified by the study of turbulent velocity fluctuations. These velocity records have been analyzed using standard digital methods to obtain spectral density, spectral energy, and cross-spectra of velocity. In order to study the generation and transfer of the turbulent moment and energy, and the intermittent nature of the so-called "Bursting or "ejections and sweeps," the distribution of u, v, w, and the Reynolds stress has been studied.

Production Of A Population Of The Stout Razor Clam (Tagelus Plebeius Solander) In A Virginia Estuary, Mark James Grussendorf

OES Theses and Dissertations

The annual net secondary production of the stout razor clam, Tagelous plebeius, was estimated at three sites on an intertidal sand flat at Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia. Samples were taken at six week intervals for one year. The range of net production (P), mean annual biomass (B), and P/B ratios was 18.3-28.7 g m-2year-1, 27.2-53.3 g m-2, and 0.54-0.67, respectively. The total biomass did not show significant seasonal variation though differences between sites were significant. Production varied temporally but was not significantly different between sites.

Study Of Cumulative Growth-Inhibiting Factors In Recycled Water For Catfish Cultivation, R. W. Raible Apr 1979

Study Of Cumulative Growth-Inhibiting Factors In Recycled Water For Catfish Cultivation, R. W. Raible

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Channel catfish were grown in tanks with integral biological filters and complete recirculation of water. After the fish had resided in the tanks for 120 days, solvent extraction was performed on a portion of the tank water. Fresh pond-raised specimen channel catfish showed decreases in their heartbeat rates of about 20 percent when exposed to the extract. This metabolic disturbance is thought to be a factor in reducing the growth rate of fish held in close confinement in recirculating systems.

Existence/Uniqueness And Validation Of Parameter Imbedding Equations For Nonlinear Fredholm Integral Equations, M. E. Lord Apr 1979

Existence/Uniqueness And Validation Of Parameter Imbedding Equations For Nonlinear Fredholm Integral Equations, M. E. Lord

Mathematics Technical Papers

A parameter imbedding method for nonlinear Fredholm integral equations produces a Cauchy system involving the solution of the integral equation and an associated resolvent kernel. For such Cauchy systems sufficient conditions are given to guarantee local existence and uniqueness of solutions. A Picard type theorem utilizing a Lipschitz condition is obtained. This result then yields the validation of the Cauchy system.

Synchronization Strategies, Mishell J. Stucki, Jerome R. Cox Jr Apr 1979

Synchronization Strategies, Mishell J. Stucki, Jerome R. Cox Jr

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Computing systems are now frequently composed of independently clocked subsystems that cooperate to perform the function desired for the whole. This type of architecture has many advantages and promises to be the standard for the foreseeable future. With the trend towards more and more gates per chip, the number of chips per subsystem gets smaller and smaller, and we can expect to soon see one or more subsystems per chip. This transition will require contributions from disciplines previously outside the field of chip design, and every issue will have to be carefully worked out beforehand because debugging chips of this …
