Gas Phase Laser Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy Of Cfcl, Stephen E. Bialkowski, David S. King, John C. Stephenson
Gas Phase Laser Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy Of Cfcl, Stephen E. Bialkowski, David S. King, John C. Stephenson
Stephen E. Bialkowski
The CFCl radical has been produced in the gas phase by both IR multiphotonphotolysis of C2F3Cl and He metastable reaction with C2F3Cl. Single vibronic level fluorescence and excitation spectra taken of this species have yielded sufficient information to determine certain vibronic constants. The excited state was found to have an origin of T0=25 283±5 cm−1 with vibrational frequencies: ω2′=394±3 cm−1 and ω3′=739±5 cm−1. In the ground state, the vibrational frequencies were found to be: ω3″=118±10 cm−1, ω2″=448±6 cm …

Equatorialelectric Fields During Magnetically Disturbed Conditions, 2. Implications Of Simultaneousauroral And Equatorial Measurements, C. A. Gonzales, M. C. Kelley, Bela G. Fejer, J. F. Vickrey, R. F. Woodman
Bela G. Fejer
Simultaneous auroral and equatorial electric field data are used along with magnetic field data to study anomalous electric field patterns during disturbed times. During some substorms, accompanied by ring current activity, the worldwide equatorial zonal electric field component reverses from the normal pattern. This is interpreted as a partial closure of high latitude field aligned currents in the dayside, low latitude ionosphere. These currents flow westward across the dayside. In several cases the zonal equatorial electric field component was nearly identical in form to the zonal auroral component, indicating the close electrical coupling between these regions. Less certain, but equally …

Pheasant Use Of Wetlands During The Winter And Application Of Landsat Imagery For Assessing Winter Habitat, Signe Sather-Blair
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate 1) vegetative factors influencing ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) use of wetlands during the winter, 2) the relationship of land use practices adjacent to wetlands and the use of such wetlands as winter cover by pheasants, and 3) the feasibility of assessing wetlands as pheasant winter habitat through the use of remote sensing data. Fifteen wetlands in Windsor Township, Brookings County, South Dakota, were randomly selected for study to estimate their use by pheasants. Use of cover types was analyzed by using multiple regression, chi-square, and t-tests. Correlation matrices were generated to locate significant relationships. …

Winter Limnological Conditions In A Prairie Pothole And The Application Of Molecular Oxygen, Richard A. Fike
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The physical, chemical, and biological conditions in Round Lake, Oakwood Lakes State Park, South Dakota were monitored during the 1977-1978 winter, and reaeration utilizing molecular oxygen was evaluated as a practical method to prevent winterkill. Ice and snow conditions after 20 December, 1977 allowed little light penetration, and phytoplankton numbers (6174/ml to 1668/ml) and chlorophyll concentration (46.6 mg/L to 14.1 mg/L) decreased throughout the winter. Aquatic bacteria and fungi comprised from 87.0% to 93.7% by number of the total cells identified (phytoplankton, bacteria, and fungi) in the lake water under ice. Dissolved oxygen declined to anoxic conditions after 19 January, …

Nesting Chronology Of South Dakota Ducks, Stephen A. Tessmann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Duck broods were censused on 476 randomly selected plots in South Dakota during July of the years 1973 through 1976. Broods were also censused on wetlands located off the study plots both in July and August of these years, except in 1976 when no August counts were made. Hatching and nest initiation dates were determined by back dating from brood age classes. Early nesting species were mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and pintails (A. acuta). Northern shovelers (A. clypeata), redheads (Aythya americana), and canvasbacks (A. valisineria) were intermediate nesters while blue-winged teal (Anas discors), gadwalls (A. strepera), and American wigeons (A. americana) …

Design And Evaluation Of A Fisheries Information Storage And Retrieval System (Fisars) For The State Of South Dakota, Richard P. Kramer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Extensive data collected each year from the streams and lakes of South Dakota necessitates a computerized system with which to efficiently utilize the large amount of material. A fisheries related data storage and retrieval system (FISARS) was developed sufficiently to provide cost estimates in creating and maintaining such a system. Detailed descriptions were made to provide information in implementing and utilizing the retrieval system. A survey was made of state fish and game agencies currently operating storage and retrieval systems. This information along with comments provided by the fisheries personnel in the state of South Dakota was used as a …
The Taxonomic Status Of Coyotes From Western South Dakota, Susan E. Lauzon
The Taxonomic Status Of Coyotes From Western South Dakota, Susan E. Lauzon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Expansion of the range of the coyote (Canis latrans) has been accompanied by numerous instances of hybridization with domestic dogs (C. familiaris). Recent studies have found a hybrid element in some wild coyote populations. The objectives of this study were to identify the taxonomic status of coyotes in western South Dakota, and to determine the degree of hybridization, if any, that is occurring between coyotes and domestic dogs in the state. Animals were collected from three areas in western South Dakota from September 1976 through January 1978. Skulls of 289 wild canids were cleaned; of these, 167 skulls from adults …
Inbreeding In Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri): Analysis Of Lethal Temperature Tolerence, Jospeh L. Mangiardi
Inbreeding In Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri): Analysis Of Lethal Temperature Tolerence, Jospeh L. Mangiardi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Inbreeding in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was evaluated in relation to an altered environment (upper lethal temperature 29 C), at four levels of inbreeding. At each level of inbreeding mean time to death for inbred, female-outbred half-sib, male-outbred half-sib and outbred families were evaluated. In all cases inbreds were less resistant to lethal temperature than were respective outbred families. Analysis of variance 9Snedecor’s F) and multiple range analysis (Tukey’s “w” procedure) provided inference limitations. Inbred fish were 82% less resistant to lethal temperature as comared to the respective outbred family at 50% inbreeding and 19% less resistant at 25% inbreeding. …
On The Water Masses Of Norfolk Canyon, Evon Paul Ruzecki
On The Water Masses Of Norfolk Canyon, Evon Paul Ruzecki
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Results from four cruises in the outer continental shelf/slope region of the Middle Atlantic Bight demonstrate the effect of Norfolk Canyon, an east coast submarine canyon, on the exchange of local water masses. Seasonal distributions of water masses and water types around the canyon were determined from closely spaced (2-5 km) hydrographic and XBT stations. Five component water types representing shelf, winter (or cold pool), slope, warm Western North Atlantic and cool Western North Atlantic waters are defined by specific T/S signatures. The percent of each water type necessary to achieve measured T/S values along sections to the north and …

(First paragraph) Customarily one does not impose n-th order boundary conditions on the solution of initial/boundary value problems whose characterizing partial differential equations are also n-th order. However, conjecture that such problems are not well-posed, or that a solution might not exist, is not always justified [l]. Perhaps a physically more natural example is provided by problems of computational fluid dynamics. Here boundary conditions which correctly should be applied at an infinite distance downstream from the region of interest are for computational convenience often applied at a finite location [2]. Results of numerical experimentation on viscous flows governed by …
On The Comparison Of Estimators In A Rectangular Distribution, Danny D. Dyer
On The Comparison Of Estimators In A Rectangular Distribution, Danny D. Dyer
Mathematics Technical Papers
Given two estimators ^1 and ^2 of an unknown parameter ^, Pitman (1937) has suggested calling ^1 a "closer" estimator of ^ than is ^2 if [see pdf for notations] for all values of ^. Using this "closeness" criterion, Johnson (1950) compared several well known estimators of ^ based on a random sample from the rectangular distribution [see pdf for notations], otherwise. In addition, each estimator's mean squared error was given since Pitman's criterion does not take into account the degree of closeness. Unfortunately when two such estimators of ^ are compared, one of them is often preferred under the …

Thin films of Laf3 deposited on Si or GaAs substrates have been observed to form blocking contacts with very high capacitances. This results in comparatively‐hysteresis‐free and sharpC‐V (capacitance‐voltage) characteristics for MIS structures. Such structures have been used to study the interface states of GaAs with increased resolution and to construct improved photocapacitive infrared detectors.

Esculin Hydrolysis In The Enterobacteriaceae, Jane Shigeko Okada
Esculin Hydrolysis In The Enterobacteriaceae, Jane Shigeko Okada
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Esculin hydrolysis, as mentioned earlier, is now a recognized test in the identification of Group P enterococci. However, its use as a taxonomic tool in differentiating the genera and species of Enterobacteriaceae has not been widely accepted, partly because of the conflicting reports in the literature and partly because of the availability of more reliable tests. Some commercial kits (MS-2, Abbott Laboratories, Dallas, Texas; Micro-Id General Diagnostics, Morris Plains, New Jersey), however, have incorporated it among their battery of biochemical tests.
The nature of the enzyme has not studied for bacteria other than the KES group and E.coli.

Blm Utah Final Initial Wilderness Inventory, United States Bureau Of Land Management
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
In the BLM Wilderness Program, only inventory is completed without consideration of other uses of the land. The wilderness inventory is only for the purpose of determining the presence of wilderness characteristics. It is on that basis that wilderness study areas will be identified. The comparison of wilderness values with other resource values is not part of the wilderness inventory process. It is a valid and necessary part of phase two study. When we enter phase two, the latter part of 1980, it will be imperative for us to consider and resolve whether the orderly development or wise preservation within …

Plasma Polymerization Of Tetrafluoroethylene. I. Inductive Radio Frequency Discharge, H. Yasuda, N. Morosoff, E. S. Brandt, C. N. Reilley
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene in an inductively coupled radio frequency glow discharge, using a flow system, was studied. A simple long tube reactor, with the coupling coil placed at the middle of the tube and gas entrance and exit at the respective ends, was used. Deposition rates and the chemical nature of the polymer (as revealed by ESCA spectra and surface energy studies) are obtained as a function of location in the reactor tube with respect to the coupling coil and of applied energy per unit mass of tetrafluoroethylene (W/FM). It was found that a fluorine poor polymer, containing …
