Laminations, Or How To Build A Quantum-Logic-Valued Model Of Set Theory, Lawrence Stout Jan 1979

Laminations, Or How To Build A Quantum-Logic-Valued Model Of Set Theory, Lawrence Stout

Scholarship

An explicit construction of the colimit of a filtered diagram in the category of topoi and logical morphisms is given and then used to construct a family of topoi with a fixed Boolean algebra of truth values but with varying amounts of cocompleteness. This same construction, when applied to the diagram of complete Boolean algebras in a quantum logic Q gives a partial topos, a noncategory which is a close to being a model of set theory with algebra of truth values Q as a noncategory can be.

The Characterization And Kinetics Of N-Formyl-N-Methylaminomethenylpentaaquochromium(Iii) Ion, James Dean White Jan 1979

The Characterization And Kinetics Of N-Formyl-N-Methylaminomethenylpentaaquochromium(Iii) Ion, James Dean White

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Anet was the first to isolate a stable sigma bonded organochromium (III) complex.1 This was the benzylpentaquochromium (III) ion obtained by the reduction of benzyl halide with chromium (II) perchlorate. The mechanism of this and similar reactions has been thoroughly studied and is believed to be2,3,4 [see PDF file for formula] where R is an alkyl group and X is a halogen other than fluorine.

All complexes reported in the literature show chromium sigma bonded to an sp3hybridized carbon atom. D. Biggs, of L. Speer's research group, attempted to synthesize a complex containing chromium sigma bonded …

A Fourier Transform Proton Magnetic Resonance Study Of The Molecular Conformation Of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine, Mark Lewis Stolowitz Jan 1979

A Fourier Transform Proton Magnetic Resonance Study Of The Molecular Conformation Of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine, Mark Lewis Stolowitz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Contrary to a previous report, S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) affords stable solutions in D2O and the 1H NMR spectrum can be determined. Comparison with the spectra of the model compounds adenosine, L-methionine and L-methionine-S-methyl sulfonium iodide allows complete assignment of the proton resonances. Coupling constants were determined by homonuclear decoupling and graphical analysis and were confined by computer simulation.

Details of the molecular conformation were determined by application of the Karplus equation and calculation of relative rotational isomer populations. Evidence indicates that the ribose ring is puckered preferentially in the C3'-exo conformation and that the C4 …

Nonlinear Anelasticity And The Martensitic Transformation, Manfred Wuttig, Tetsuro Suzuki Jan 1979

Nonlinear Anelasticity And The Martensitic Transformation, Manfred Wuttig, Tetsuro Suzuki

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Zener's model of a standard linear solid is extended to include nonlinearities characteristic of metals and alloys in the vicinity of a martensitic transformation. The equation of motion of a nonlinear anelastic solid is derived and solved using van der Pol's method. The characteristics of the solutions indicate that auto-oscillations of finite amplitude can be excited externally. It is proposed that the streaming oscillations represent the beat between the external excitation and the auto-oscillation. © 1979.

Low Frequency Nearshore Current Fluctuations On Florida's Central East Coast, Ortwin Von Zweck, David A. Hale Jan 1979

Low Frequency Nearshore Current Fluctuations On Florida's Central East Coast, Ortwin Von Zweck, David A. Hale

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Nearshore current measurements in 10 m of water off Hutchinson Island on Florida's central east coast were obtained over 40 da. Data analyses reveal independent alongshore and crosshelf systems of suhinertial waves superimposed on a weak southward, essentially alongshore mean current. The crosshelf current fluctuations appear to be wind driven, while only the 2-2.8 da alongshore current fluctuations are coherent with windstress.

Proton Spin Relaxation And Methyl And Hydroxy Group Motion, Peter A. Beckmann Jan 1979

Proton Spin Relaxation And Methyl And Hydroxy Group Motion, Peter A. Beckmann

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Proton spin-lattice relaxation rates R = T1−1 have been measured in powdered samples of 4-methyl-2,6-di-tertiarybutyl phenol between 77 and 170 K. Deuteration of the hydroxy proton leads to a large change in R in the vicinity of the 120-K R maximum and in the high-temperature region. The data are successfully, although probably not uniquely, fitted and the interpretation suggests that in addition to the motion of the hydroxy proton playing a significant role in the relaxation, the two pairs of t-butyl methyl groups also contributing are inequivalent. The departure, at low temperatures, from an ω−2dependence of R where …

A Kinetic Study Of The Base Catalyzed Ring Opening Of 9-Methylcaffeine Halide And Its Homologs, Karl Gregory Reimer Jan 1979

A Kinetic Study Of The Base Catalyzed Ring Opening Of 9-Methylcaffeine Halide And Its Homologs, Karl Gregory Reimer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study provides information about the kinetics of the hydrolytic ring cleavage of imidazolium compounds and the catalytic effect of micelles in this ring cleavage. 9-Methylcaffeine iodide was synthesized and its base catalyzed ring cleavage was studied. The ring cleavage, via alkaline hydrolysis of the imidazole moiety, showed pseudo-first order kinetics over the pH range of 7.28 to 10.81. Activation parameters were found to be: Ea = 29.4 Kcal mole-1, △H+ = 28.8 Kcal mole-1 , and △S+ = 27.4 cal mole-l deg -1 The kinetics were studied in the presence of micelles and …

Erosion Risks With High Stocking Rates At Kojonup Trial, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A pasture grazing trial at Kojonup dramatically illustrated the effects of Cyclone Alby. Severe erosion was evident on the heavily stocked plots while the more lightly stocked plots showed little damage.

Contour Cultivation : Cheap Erosion Control, T R. Negus, B. Barrett Jan 1979

Contour Cultivation : Cheap Erosion Control, T R. Negus, B. Barrett

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Although the benefits of contour cultivation are well recognised, it makes cultivation more difficult, particularly if the paddock is split by contour banks and grassed waterways. However, a comparison east of Pingelly indicates that contour cultivation is little more expensive or time-consuming than ordinary cultivation.

Stochastic Dominance And Information Value, Young Koan Kwon, John C. Fellingham, D. Paul Newman Jan 1979

Stochastic Dominance And Information Value, Young Koan Kwon, John C. Fellingham, D. Paul Newman

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Incentives for producing and disseminating information have been analysed in many different contexts. Kihlstrom [6], for example, develops a Bayesian framework to analyze the properties of demand functions for information about product quality. From an entirely different perspective, Spence [8, 91 demonstrates the private value of “signalling” information. Similarly, Wilson [lo] considers the value to the firm of producing technological information and the effect of such production on equilibrium theory.

Estimation Of Water Surface Elevation Probabilities And Associated Damages For The Great Salt Lake, L. Douglas James, David S. Bowles, W. Robert James, Ronald V. Canfield Jan 1979

Estimation Of Water Surface Elevation Probabilities And Associated Damages For The Great Salt Lake, L. Douglas James, David S. Bowles, W. Robert James, Ronald V. Canfield

Reports

Rising water surface elevations in perennial terminal lakes threaten major damages to shoreline industrial plants, transportation routs, and wetlands. Falling elevations increase pumping costs for industries extracting minerals from the lake water and reduce the quality of shoreline recreation. The managers of these properties need information on future lake level probabilities for planning, and public agencies need information on both probabilities and damages to determine whether lake level control is justified. Standard methods for estimating flood frequency and damages in riverine areas do not work well for terminal lakes because of the interdependency in annual peaks and the long advanced …

Domestic Water Demand In Utah, Trevor C. Hughes, Robert Gross Jan 1979

Domestic Water Demand In Utah, Trevor C. Hughes, Robert Gross

Reports

Multiple regression and frequency analysis of average month, peak month, peak day, and instantaneous water use by various water supply systems in Utah and Colorado are used to develop water demand functions. The research objective was to predict water demand as a function of a small number of independent variables for which data were easily obtainable and thereby provide an attractive method for use by consulting engineers inf uture planning studies. The independent variables in landscaped area and accounts for use of supplementary ditch or pressure irrigation systems. The demand functions were developed with data from a sample of 14 …

Additional Comments On Reproductive Strategies And Population Fluctuations In Microtine Rodents, Michael S. Gaines, William M. Schaffer, Robert K. Rose Jan 1979

Additional Comments On Reproductive Strategies And Population Fluctuations In Microtine Rodents, Michael S. Gaines, William M. Schaffer, Robert K. Rose

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Recently, Schaffer and Tamarin (1973) proposed a model relating changes in reproductive effort (RE) to fluctuating densities in microtine rodents (lemmings and voles). They assumed (and presented data supporting this assumption) that the major effect of increased crowding would be a reduction in survival among prereproductives, thereby lowering the effective fecundity (Schaffer and Rosenzweig 1977) of their parents. As a consequence, Schaffer and Tamarin argued that the optimal reproductive expenditure, E(N), should decline with increasing population size, N. They also deduced the shape of the zero-growth isocline, N*(E), for differing levels of RE and plotted both E(N) and N*(E) on …

Cereal, Pasture Legume And Water Supply Prospects At Forrestania : Results Of Experimental Work East Of Hyden, Western Australia, T E. Mcdowell, M G. Mason, J W. Gartrell, William J. Toms, I A F Laing Jan 1979

Cereal, Pasture Legume And Water Supply Prospects At Forrestania : Results Of Experimental Work East Of Hyden, Western Australia, T E. Mcdowell, M G. Mason, J W. Gartrell, William J. Toms, I A F Laing

Technical Bulletins

The agricultural potential of the Forrestania area appears at least equal to that of much of the settled eastern wheatbelt. The scrubplain soils of the Forrestania area have an average yield potential of at least 1 000 kg/ha wheat and carrying capacity of 1.8 to 3.7 sheep per hectare on improved pastures. The use of clover ley rotations would maintain these levels of potential yield. Partial crop failures caused by adverse seasonal conditions could be expected 10 years in every 100.

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1979 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1979

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1979 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through·early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.
