Penrose Pair Production As A Power Source Of Quasars And Active Galactic Nuclei, Menas Kafatos, D. Leiter

In this paper we propose a new mechanism, Penrose pair production in massive, canonical (with a/M = 0.998) Kerr black holes, as a power source in quasars, Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, and BL Lac objects (i.e., what one usually refers to as active nuclei). As a working hypothesis, we postulate that massive (10^8 M0 or around this value) Kerr black holes reside in the centers of these objects. We also postulate that an accretion disk is formed. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

This study was designed to examine whether religiosity is a determining factor in public reaction to obscenity issues.
A sample population of 452 residents of the community of Idaho Falls, Idaho was selected using a technique based on a list of random numbers in October, 1979. Path analysis, Chi-square analysis and Spearman's correlation were used to measure the results.
The study found there is a significant relationship between religiosity and behavior intention toward obscenity issues. The affective component of the attitude organization functions somewhat as a mediating variable. There were also findings that members of the Church of Jesus Christ …

A Survey Of The Late Summer Benthos Community In The Vicinity Of The C. P. Crane Generating Station, Robert A. Jordan, Charles E. Sutton, Patrica A. Goodwin

A survey of the sediment distribution in the vicinity of the C. P. Crane Generating Station, Bengies, Maryland showed that the sediments in the creeks receiving the plant's cooling water discharge were predominantly soft clayey-silt. The benthic invertebrate taxa found in these sediments were typical of the connnunities found in oligohaline waters of Chesapeake Bay. Comparisons of the benthic community in the discharge area with the connnunities in two reference areas of similar sediment type revealed an apparent reduction in the discharge area population of the dominant amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus, in August.

Water management in irrigation projects is one potential method for reducing downstream salinity in the Colorado River. An important contribution can be made to developing more effective irrigation water management practices for water conservation and salinity control through identification and better understanding of the soil and water interactions that result in soils behaving as salt sources or as salt sinks. A new procedure for the detection of viral antigens in fecal material was developed. The test is performed by first diluting a fecal sample with phosphate buffered saline to give a liquid consistency. The pH is then adjusted to 8.5-9.0 and the solids are allowed to settle for five minutes. Supernatant fluid from above the fecal sediment is placed on the upper surface of a well of an inverted Immulon microtiter plate and incubated for one hour at 37 degrees C to allow virus to adsorb to the plastic. An Economic Evaluation Of The Salinity Impacts From Energy Development: The Case Of The Upper Colorado River Basin, Rangesan Narayanan, Sumol Padungchai, A. Bruce Bishop

To analyze the effect of potential energy development on water allocation and water quality in the Upper Colorado River Basin, a linear programming model is formulated. Using the model, changes in salinity are predicted. Further, least-cost strategies to maintain the established numeric salinity criteria through both structural and nonstructural alternatives are developed. The effectiveness of alternative control measures are examined within given institutional constraints. Based on cost-benefit analysis, optimal salinity levels over time are proposed. The economic feasibility of presently planned strucutral measures to reduce salinity is investigated and contrasted with nonstructural alternatives.

This report demonstrates the feasibility of applying stochastic techniques to linear water quality models. The Monte Carlo, First Order, and Generation of Moment Equation techniques are applied to a long term phosphorus model of Lake Washington. The effect of uncertainty of the phosphours loading term on simulated phosphous levels is analyzed. All three stochastic techniques produced the same results. The simulated concentrations of phosphorus in the water column are very responsive to uncertainty in annual phosphorus loading, the sediment concentrations relatively insensitive. The Monte Carlo technique is shown to require the most computation time of the three stochastic techniques applied. …

The purposes of this study were to evaluate virus removal in treatment of water supplies by an in-line direct filtration pilot plant system and to suggest a system design to enhance virus removal. Isotherm and jar tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of pH, sodium ion concentration, and coagulants (alum and cationic polyelectrolytes Cat-Floc T, Nalco 8102, and 8103) on the bacteriophage MS2 contained in water. Isotherm studies were also conducted to assess the kinetic adsorption of MS2 to sand, anthracite, and garnet. Performance testing of direct-tapped PVC pressure pipe was conducted at the Utah Water Research Laboratory to verify and document its capabilities under cyclic pressure conditions. Twelve samples of nominal six-inch diameter, pressure class 150 PVC pipe, manufactured to satisfy the requirements of AWWA Standard C900, were obtained from Uni-Bell Member producers. Five pipe samples were tapped and fitted with ¾ inch corporation stops under a line pressure of 80 +- 5psi. Another five samples were tapped fitted with one inch corporation stops under a pressure of 150 psi. Only corporation stops complying with AWWA Standard C800 were used. The remaining …

In the arid climate of Southern and Central Utah, there is a continuing need to augment water supplies. While much of the water is needed for summertime use, particularly for irrigation, most of the available water is supplied by winter storms. This research continues the exploration of improved cloud seeding technology through the use of airborne seeding, cloud physics measurements from a research aircraft and ground based measurements for the purpose of understanding transport and diffusion of seeding material, developing seedability criteria, and documenting in-cloud responses to seeding. Development of precipitation measuring and memory devices was continued with the aim of obtaining a network of gages well suited for measurement of winter snowfall in mountainous regions. This publication reports the results of a municipal and industrial water use inventory. Data reported covers the period 1960 through 1976. Time series information is aggregated from municipal and industrial system level to country and state totals. Total municipal and industrial withdrawals are divided between surface and groundwater sources. Yearly per capital withdrawal rates are estimated for 50 Utah municipalities and for each of Utah’s 29 counties. Per capita withdrawal rates range from a high of over 400 gallons per capita per day (gcd) in the communities of Delta, Fillmore, Hyrum, Logan, and Morgan to a low of 100 gcd …

A probabilistic river water quality model is developed with the capability of determinging the joint and marginal probability density function of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) at any point in a river. The one dimensional steady-state model can be applied to a river system with any reasonable number of point loads and diversions and lateral surface and subsurface inflow. The model can simultaneously consider randomness in the intital conditions, inputs, and coefficients of the water quality equations. Several models were developed to predict the efficiency of the intermittent sand filter (ISF) in removing algae from wastewater stabilization pond effluent; volatile suspended solids (VSS) was the analytical technique used to identify algal concentrations. The first (ISF model) and second (modified ISF model) models consisted of two distinct portions: a surface algal layer (SAL) component and a sand phase component. The leachability of the acetanilide herbicide, CP55097 was determined using a soil column system. This herbicide, which is used as a preemergent against certain grasses and broadleaf weeds, was leached through four different soils (sandy clay, sandy loam, sandy clay loam and clay loam) using the following procedure. Plastic columns consisting of 8 rings (2 in. dia. x 1 in.) were assembled and their bottoms covered with cheesecloth. The major emphasis of this study is the economic feasibility of the use of alcohol-gasoline blends (gasohol) and alcohol fuels; but all major issues concerning the use of gasohol and alcohol fuels are explored. The specific objectives of the investigation include the determination of the specific performance properties of the fuels, their pollutant emissions (compared to gasoline), and their costs compared to gasoline.

The purpose of this study was to prepare the 1,1-dimethylpyrazolium-5-oxides from a variety of N,N-dimethylhydrazones which can be prepared from the corresponding β-ketoesters.
Substitution of a methyl group at α-position of β-ketoesters makes the formation of N,N-dimethylhydrazones more difficult. The electron-withdrawing group (-NO2) and the electron-releasing group (-OCH3) as a parasubstituent of the benzene ring have the electrostatic effect to the nucleophilic attack of dimethylhydrazine to form the N,N-dimethylhydrazones.

This paper evaluates and improves the performance of the Wu-Koh mathematical model for the prediction of plume dispersion from multiple natural-draft (NDCT) and mechanical-draft (MDCT) cooling towers. The Wu-Koh multiple-tower model was chosen for study due to its advanced treatment of plume merging.
Our evaluation of the Wu-Koh model was carried out by comparing model predictions of field and laboratory data. Comparisons of model predictions of visible plume outlines were made to single- and multiple-tower visible plume data.
