On Basin Hyposmetry And The Morphodynamic Response Of Coastal Inlet Systems, John Boon, Robert J. Byrne
On Basin Hyposmetry And The Morphodynamic Response Of Coastal Inlet Systems, John Boon, Robert J. Byrne
Reports
The exchange of water and entrained material between coastal basins and the inner continental shelf reduces to the problem of polarized transport (flood +, ebb —) in the conveyance channels routing flow through a coastal inlet. Here the net long-term movement of materials is largely a function of the fluid velocity and discharge — variables whose time history at-a-station contains both periodic and aperiodic elements. In this paper the importance of the major periodic elements in coastal inlet flows and their potential contribution to the net transport of bedload materials is discussed.

An Environmental Assessment Of The Summer Plankton In The Vicinity Of The C.P. Crane Generating Station, George C. Grant, Stephen P. Berkowitz
Reports
A preliminary survey of summer plankton in ·waters surrounding the C. P. Crane generating station in Bengies, Maryland, revealed several possible effects of plant operation. These perturbations were separated into apparent small-scale and large-scale effects:
Small-scale effects were limited to the immediate discharge region of Saltpeter Creek and included (1) occasional elevation of temperatures at the surface (in August) to above the lethal limit for most zooplankton and sufficiently high to inhibit photosynthesis, (2) a decrease in chlorophyll-a, seen in July and August, (3) a sharp decrease in productivity, also in July and August, and (4) absence of a common …

Groundwater Heat Pump: An Efficient Way To Heat And Cool Your Home, Calvin G. Clyde, E. W. Vendell, K. Hagen
Groundwater Heat Pump: An Efficient Way To Heat And Cool Your Home, Calvin G. Clyde, E. W. Vendell, K. Hagen
Reports
Engineers at the Utah Water Research Laboratory and the Mechanical Engineering Department at Utah State University have looked into the evonomic feasibility of groundwater heat pumps for residential heating and cooling in the Utah climate. They have found that this type of system conserves evergy and may cost less than conventional heating systems. By using a heat pump, thermal energy can be taken from goundwater and can be used to heat homes in the winder and cool them in the summer. If you are a Utah homeowner in an area where the goundwater heat pump system is economical, you may …

A Resource Survey Of Hydroelectric Power Potential In Utah And Southeast Idaho, Calvin G. Clyde, Eugene K. Israelsen, Win-Kai Liu
Reports
N searching for alternative sources of energy to supply growing demands, it is essential that renewable sources by thoroughly considered. An essential early step in further hydroelectric power development is to understand in detail the amount and location of the resource. This survey of hydroelectric power potential covers the entire State of Utah, the Bear River Basin in Idaho and Wyoming, and the small part of the Snake River drainage lying in the Utah Power and Light Company service area in Idaho. Streams were covered initially if their flow was estimated to exceed 36 cfs 50 percent of the time. …
Erosion Control During Highway Construction: Volume 1, Calvin G. Clyde, C. Earl Israelsen, Paul E. Packer
Erosion Control During Highway Construction: Volume 1, Calvin G. Clyde, C. Earl Israelsen, Paul E. Packer
Reports
Summary: Highway constuction as we know it today is a high-risk activity with respect to engendering soil erosion. In earlier days of road building, when rights-of-way were generally narrow and excavations mostly shollow, erosion was rarely a serious problem. Only occasionally was it considered necessary to design and apply specific measures for erosion control. With the advent of the superhighway involving far greater widths of right-of-way, and much deeper disturbance of the natural ground to affort the horizontal and vertical highway geometry necessary for high-speed travel, came a several fold increase in erosion potential and a direct need for specific …

Effects Of Oil Shale Leachate On Phytoplankton Productivity, Mary Louise Cleave, V. Dean Adams, Donald B. Porcella
Reports
The effects of oil shale leachate and salinity additions on the productivity of freshwater algae were studied in the laboratory using batch bioassays. These batch bioassays were used to screen variations of ten salts in single and multiple additions of all possible combinations of the ten salts; water extractions of different processed and unprocessed oil shales; and the concentration effects of both the salts from 0.3 N to 0.05 N as NaCl and the oil shale extractions on the growth of standard test algae and indigenous algae from Lake Powell. The batch bottle bioassays were conducted following the standard algal …

Pre-Impoundment Water Quality Study For The San Miguel Project, Larry Baker, V. Dean Adams, Leslie G. Terry, Jerald S. Fifield, Darwin L. Sorensen
Reports
Introduction: Scope of Study: The United State Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) is currently evaluating plans to construct a multipurpose reservoir on the San Miguel River 32 kilometers (20 miles) below Telluride, Colorado. As part of the environmental assessment for this project, the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) was contracted to conduct an intensive water quality study on the San Miguel River and its tributaries in the vicinity of the project area. In this study water samples were collected during the period from May, 1977, to August, 1978, on a monthly basis from three sites on the San Miguel River and …

Sporadic Mass Ejection In Red Supergiants, Menas Kafatos, A. G. Michalitsianos
Sporadic Mass Ejection In Red Supergiants, Menas Kafatos, A. G. Michalitsianos
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We have applied a general mechanism first proposed by J. A. Burke to red supergiants for determining the spin-down rate and angular momentum loss of rotating stars. This model relies principally on sporadic mass ejection, which is assumed to be the result of turbulent elements accelerating material in cool supergiant.atmospheres. Mass is preferentially expelled in the forward direction of rotation, resulting in a rapid loss of angular momentum on time scales of 1Q^4-10^6 years in the supergiant evolutionary phase. Such rotational breaking will occur if the turbulent elements have characteristic sizes a few percent of the stellar radius, and rms …

Stable Equilibrium Statistical States For Spheromaks, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala

Incompressible nondissipative magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is treated for spherical systems. From the absolute equilibrium expectation values of the fields one can investigate those initially quiescent states for which no large mean square velocity will develop. This stable state is force-free and gives rise to the Hill vortex structure for the magnetic flux surfaces.

Two Upper Cretaceous Flysch Sequences In The Caribbean Mountains Of Venezuela And Their Relationship To Caribbean Tectonics, Stephen A. Meyer
Two Upper Cretaceous Flysch Sequences In The Caribbean Mountains Of Venezuela And Their Relationship To Caribbean Tectonics, Stephen A. Meyer
Honors Papers
The Caribbean Mountains of Venezuela reach from the Venezuelan Andes to the Northern Ranges of Trinidad. Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene flysch units deposited in a marine euxinic basin are crucial in unraveling the evolution of the mountains. Two formations in the Acarigua region (near the termination in the Venezuelan Andes), the Rio Guache and Nuezalito formations, are the most complete sections of these flysch sequences. A sedimentary petrologic study was undertaken to determine the source areas for these formations, to put age brackets on the timing of uplift and rotation of portions of the Caribbean Mountains.
The mountains are divided …
