Role Of Low-Energy Two-Body Virtual States In Three-Particle Scattering Situations, James A. Lock Dec 1978

Role Of Low-Energy Two-Body Virtual States In Three-Particle Scattering Situations, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

A model three-particle scattering situation consisting of a projectile incident on a target bound to a residual core was considered under the assumptions that there was a low-energy virtual state in the projectile-target channel, that the projectile and core did not interact, and that the projectile-target and target-core interactions were s-wave separable interactions. When the appropriate Faddeev equations were solved by inversion, an enhancement was found in the three-body elastic cross section for virtual state energies less than or comparable to the target-core binding energy. This enhancement was determined to be kinematical in origin.

An Investigation Of Montmort's "Probleme De Recontres" And Generalizations, Ronald I. Greenberg Dec 1978

An Investigation Of Montmort's "Probleme De Recontres" And Generalizations, Ronald I. Greenberg

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

I have investigated a problem which may be phrased in many ways, such as finding the probability of answering a given number of questions correctly on a randomly-completed matching test which may have a number of extra "dud" answers. I have determined such probabilities, the average number of correct answers, and other allied results. I have also investigated a related problem involving the number of ways of choosing a different element from each of a certain collection of sets.

Existence And Comparison Results For Differential Equations Of Sobolev Type, Randy Vaughn, A. S. Vatsala Dec 1978

Existence And Comparison Results For Differential Equations Of Sobolev Type, Randy Vaughn, A. S. Vatsala

Mathematics Technical Papers

Recently a new class of differential equations, called differential equations of Sobolev type was studied in [4] in which an existence theorem of Picards type was investigated as well as a variation of constants formula. In [5], existence and comparison results for a class of Volterra integral equation of Sobolev-type were discussed. In this paper we recall the Peano type existence result from [5] for Sobolev-differential equations and show that solutions can be extended to the entire square under consideration. This result extends results found in [1] for nonlinear Volterra integral equations. Our results include a comparison result in addition …

Note On Special Relativistic Calculations With Identical Laboratory And Rocket Frame Computers, Donald Greenspan Dec 1978

Note On Special Relativistic Calculations With Identical Laboratory And Rocket Frame Computers, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

Dynamical relativistic problems invariably require the solution of nonlinear differential equations. These equations are rarely solvable in closed form and are now being solved numerically on modern digital computers. In this paper, a numerical method is developed which has the special property that computations on identical computers in both the laboratory and rocket frames yield numerical results which continue to be related by the Lorentz transformation.

Spectroscopic Study Of Ni(Ii)-4, 4’, 4’’, 4’ ’’ – Tetrasulfophthalocyanine In Aqueous Solution, Issa Ishaq Jabra

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It was determined spectrally that a monomer-dimer equilibrium exists in aqueous solutions of Ni-TSPC4- over a concentration range of 5 x 10-8 – 10-4 M. Equilibrium measurements were made under natural ionic strength conditions at 29°, 39° and 49°C. The values obtained for the equilibrium constants at 29°, 39° and 49°C were 2.4 x 108, 6.6 x 107 and 2.9 x 107 M-1, respectively. These results indicated that the equilibrium strongly favors dimer formation. This study also showed that nickel is second to copper in enhancing the dimerization of metallotetrasulfophthalocyanine complexes. …

Electron Transfer Reactions Of An Osmium (Ii) Polypyridyl Complex With Oxidizing Agents, Stephen Mcclanahan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Redox rates between polypyridyl osmium (II) complex, OsCl(py)3(bipy)+, with tris(1,10-phenanthroline) cobalt (III), Co(phen)33+, and Ce(IV) were examined in aqueous solution. Both reaction systems exhibited second order kinetics. The osmium (II) - cobalt (III) redox reaction was found to have a rate constant of 2.3 x 105 M-1 sec-1 at 22°C and µ = 0.003M from which the isotopic electronic exchange rate constant for the OsCl(py)3(bipy)+/2+ system was estimated to be 1.5 x 109 M-1sec-1.

Ionic strength effects on the Ce(IV) - Os(II) …

Chemical Vapor Deposited Amorphous Silicon For Use In Photothermal Conversion, David D. Allred, D. C. Booth, M. Janai, G. Weiser, B. O. Seraphin Nov 1978

Chemical Vapor Deposited Amorphous Silicon For Use In Photothermal Conversion, David D. Allred, D. C. Booth, M. Janai, G. Weiser, B. O. Seraphin

Faculty Publications

Efficient photothermal conversion requires surfaces of high solar absorptance and low thermal emittance. This can be accomplished by the tandem action of a good infrared reflector overlaid by a film of sufficient solar absorptance that is transparent in the infrared. Crystalline silicon is a suitable candidate for the absorber layer. Its indirect band gap, however, results in a shallow absorption edge that extends to far into the visible. In contrast, the absorption edge of amorphous silicon is steeper and located farther into the infrared, resulting in a larger solar absorptance. We report on the fabrication of amorphous silicon absorbers by …

Chemical Vapor Deposited Molybdenum Films For Use In Photothermal Conversion, David D. Allred, G. E. Carver, B. O. Seraphin

Faculty Publications

High infrared reflectance, coupled with higher solar absorptance, is required for efficient photothermal conversion. Converters can be fabricated by depositing an absorber on a highly reflecting metal. The absorber functions in the visible, yet becomes transparent in the near infrared, allowing the metal to suppress the thermal emittance. Economic considerations demand the use of thin films, rather than bulk materials. The thin film reflector must be capable of withstanding high temperatures of operation. Compatibility of the reflector with the substrate below, and the absorber above, is required for long-time service. Highly reflective silver films suffer reflectance losses by agglomeration, and …

An Illustrative Model Describing The Refraction Of Long Water Waves By A Circular Island, Gregory A. Kriegsmann Nov 1978

An Illustrative Model Describing The Refraction Of Long Water Waves By A Circular Island, Gregory A. Kriegsmann

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The refraction of small shallow water waves by an idealized island is studied in this paper. The island's shoal is modeled by a quartic polynomial in the radial variable. This particular model allows the explicit construction of the rays (wave orthogonals) and the determination of several important features of the wave motion. The various shortcomings of the particular profile are discussed.

Radiobiological Aspects Of Supralinear Photographic Emulsions, Robert Katz, Edward C. Pennington Nov 1978

Radiobiological Aspects Of Supralinear Photographic Emulsions, Robert Katz, Edward C. Pennington

Robert Katz Publications

Abstract Nuclear emulsions of the Ilford K series, exposed to X-rays from 15 to 150 kVp and systematically underdeveloped, exhibit supralinear blackness-exposure curves ranging from 1- to 4-hit in character, and whose shape is the same at all excitation voltages. Processing can be so adjusted that the curve shape is well represented by the model, and matches an experimental dose-response curve obtained with hamster cells after irradiation with gamma rays. The effective grain size of these emulsions is 1.3 μm when normalized to unit density material for comparison with the radiation-sensitive elements of biological cells. With fractionated exposures, response …

Consequences Of Light Reflection At The Interface Between Two Transparent Media Such That The Angle Of Refraction Is 45°, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The reflection of light at the interface between two transparent, homogeneous and optically isotropic media such that the angle of refraction is 45° has the following interesting consequences: (i) the interface relfectivity for the parallel (p) polarization is the square of that for the perpendicular (s) polarization; (ii) the angular deviation of the propagation direction upon refraction is equal to the polarization (or ellipsometric) angle ψ and (iii) the complex reflection coefficient for the ppolarization is stationary, in both magnitude and phase, with respect to small charges of the (refractive and/or absorptive) optical properties of …
