[3H]‑Raffinose, A Novel Radioactive Label For Determining Organ Sites Of Catabolism Of Proteins In The Circulation, Jonathon Van Zile, Lee A. Henderson, John W. Baynes, Suzanne R. Thorpe

Faculty Publications

The primary tissue sites of catabolism of plasma proteins with long circulating half-lives are unknown. It has been difficult to identify these sites because plasma proteins are delivered to tissues at relatively slow rates but are rapidly degraded intracellularly within lysosomes. Therefore, a tracer attached to protein is lost from the site of uptake before an amount sufficient for quantitation can accumulate. We hypothesized that sucrose (Glupal-2 /3Fruf) would be a useful label to circumvent this difficulty because of the stability of sucrose in lysosomes; and thus, sucrose should remain in tissue long after the protein to which it was …

Hydrolytic And Photochemical Degradation Of Organophosphorus Pesticides, James F. Hinton Sep 1978

Hydrolytic And Photochemical Degradation Of Organophosphorus Pesticides, James F. Hinton

Technical Reports

To keep pace with demands for increasing food supplies to satisfy the expanding world population, modern agriculture has utilized the latest scientific and technological knowledge available. Increases in crop production through the use of growth regulators, fertilizers , herbicides, and insecticides have been little short of phenomenal, and drugs, feed additives, and higher-quality grain and forage have dramatically increased livestock production. But, as is usually the case, this progress has been accompanied by problems, one of the more serious being contamination of our environment by chemicals. Only in recent years have the full effects of these pollutants on the ecological …

Mobility Of Α Particles In Helium, J. M. Wadehra, James S. Cohen, J. N. Bardsley

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

The mobility of α particles in helium gas is calculated using the zeroth-order Viehland-Mason theory with interaction potentials recently computed by Cohen and Bardsley. The results show a dependence on field strength similar to the measurements of Johnsen and Biondi but are lower in magnitude by about 5%.

A Model For The Surface Of A Molten Salt, Jerry Goodisman, R. W. Pastor Sep 1978

A Model For The Surface Of A Molten Salt, Jerry Goodisman, R. W. Pastor

Chemistry - All Scholarship

A model is proposed for the two-particle distribution functions for the surface region of a system composed of two oppositely charged species with identical hard sphere repulsions. The distribution functions are formed from those for the bulk fluid by incorporating a cutoff corresponding to the surface and a multiplying factor defined so as to guarantee electroneutrality while maintaining the proper symmetry. Various methods for doing this are discussed. Good agreement is obtained for surface tension and surface energy. Density oscillations are predicted.

High Let Constraints On Low Let Survival, Robert Katz Sep 1978

High Let Constraints On Low Let Survival, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Survival curves for biological cells irradiated with gamma rays (and other low LET radiations) cannot be properly interpreted without examining the implications of these interpretations for high LET radiations. The theory of RBE demands that the RBE of any high LET radiation field is at most one when the probability for cell killing as a function of the absorbed dose of gamma rays is linear or sublinear, for homogeneous samples whose radiosensitivity parameters are not altered during the irradiation. A contrary experimental finding strongly suggests that the experimental sample is heterogeneous. Violation of this constraint is not unusual where the …

Existence And Comparison Results For A Class Of Volterra Integral Equations Of Sobolev Type, A. S. Vatsala, V. Lakshmikantham, Randy Vaughn Sep 1978

Existence And Comparison Results For A Class Of Volterra Integral Equations Of Sobolev Type, A. S. Vatsala, V. Lakshmikantham, Randy Vaughn

Mathematics Technical Papers

Recently [2] a class of new differential equations called Sobolev type differential equations was introduced and Picard type existence theorem for such equations was proved among other results like variation of constants formula and Gronwall type inequalities for such equations. However Peano's type existence result was open for such equations since it was not clear how to proceed. Special cases of such equations occur in imbedding method for solving Fredholm integral equations [5]. In this paper we consider Volterra integral equations of Sobolev type which include the foregoing class of differential equations as special cases. We consider Peano's type existence …

Higher Education Learning Project (Physics) Books, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

The books in this small collection of paperbacks deal with many of the issues confronting physicists who teach undergraduates. These books are the result of several physicist- years of studying various aspects of teaching in undergraduate physics programs in the United Kingdom. Each book includes references to related books and articles.

I think that these books make an essential contribution to the literature about teaching physics at the university level. For too long many of the physics departments that I know have acted as if the only way to evaluate teaching was to give a multiple-choice questionnaire to students at …

Plant Geography And Water Quality Data For Chesapeake Bay Waters Of Virginia's Eastern Shore, John C. Munday Jr., Paul L. Zubkoff, J. Ernest Warinner Iii, Elvira Ferrez-Reyes, Hayden H. Gordon, Kenneth A. Moore Sep 1978

Plant Geography And Water Quality Data For Chesapeake Bay Waters Of Virginia's Eastern Shore, John C. Munday Jr., Paul L. Zubkoff, J. Ernest Warinner Iii, Elvira Ferrez-Reyes, Hayden H. Gordon, Kenneth A. Moore

Reports

Plant geography and water quality data were collected in shallow water near Cape Charles and Occohannock Creek, Virginia on two occasions. Data from April, 1978 included hydrography, distribution and abundance of -submerged aquatic vegetation, phytoplankton census, and water clarity data. Data from May, 1978 included hydrography, phytoplankton census, water clarity, and primary productivity data. The May data collection was coincident with an overflight of the NASA JSC C-130 aircraft (6600 m) acquiring color infrared photography and multispectral scanner data; cell concentrations reached 105/ml, chlorophyll~ 72 pg/1, and suspended sediment 94 mg/1. i

Statistical Measures For Admission Rates, Paula Diehr Aug 1978

Statistical Measures For Admission Rates, Paula Diehr

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Hospital admission rates are often shown and interpreted without consideration of their inherent variability, which may lead to faulty conclusions. This may be because theoretically correct variance estimates are not known for the type of estimates usually used; i.e., total admissions divided by total person-months of observation. Here, correct methods for testing and estimation are shown for situations where they exist. For other types of data, approximate procedures are proposed and their properties examined theoretically and empirically, yielding recommendations for exact and approximate estimation and testing methods for admission rates in common situations.

The Formation And Decomposition Of Nickel Carbide In Evaporated Nickel Films On Graphite, S. Sinharoy, L. L. Levenson Aug 1978

The Formation And Decomposition Of Nickel Carbide In Evaporated Nickel Films On Graphite, S. Sinharoy, L. L. Levenson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study nickel carbide (Ni3C) formed during the evaporation of nickel onto the surface of single-crystal graphite. It is shown that Ni3C formed in this manner extends from the surface to close to the interface. A model is proposed to explain the mechanism of Ni3C formation. The 1s photoelectron peak from Ni3C is observed to have a binding energy 0.6 eV lower than that of pure graphite. This is attributed to the lack of any significant ionic bonding in Ni3C. © 1978.
