Zooplankton Limnology Of Beaver And Degray Reservoirs In Arkansas, Eugene H. Schmitz

Technical Reports

Research during the year 1975-76 continued to emphasize studies of seasonal changes in patterns of zooplankton abundance and biomass in Beaver and DeGray Reservoirs. Zooplankton samples were taken monthly from three stations on Beaver Reservoir (Figure 1) during the period May 1975 through May 1976. Collections from DeGray Reservoir were made weekly from a single station (Station 1) during the period April 1975 through December 1975. Beaver collections were obtained by taking oblique tows using a Miller sampler equipped with no. 10 mesh. The DeGray program entailed stratified vertical samples taken at 5 intervals to 20 a and 20 m …

Organochlorine Pesticide Residue, Physico-Chemical, And Bacteriological Profile Of The Lower Rio Grande River Of Texas, Juan H. Gonzalez May 1978

Organochlorine Pesticide Residue, Physico-Chemical, And Bacteriological Profile Of The Lower Rio Grande River Of Texas, Juan H. Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

An investigation was conducted to determine if the widespread and abundant use of organochlorine pesticides in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas has had any effect on the microbial flora in the water and in the bottom sediments of the Lower Rio Grande River of Texas.

Rio Grande River water and bottom sediments were cultured for microbial flora, were analyzed for pesticide residues, and the physicochemical properties of the water were determined. Samples were taken at four different sites during a ten month sampling period in 1974.

Traces of organochlorine residues were found in the water, and higher concentrations …

The Photochemistry Of Alpha, Beta-Unsaturated Nitro Compounds, Liang-Wuen Chang May 1978

The Photochemistry Of Alpha, Beta-Unsaturated Nitro Compounds, Liang-Wuen Chang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

1-(9-Anthry1)-2-nitropropene and 1-(3-pyridy1)-2-nitropropene were prepared and irradiated with ultraviolet light.

Irradiation of 1-(9-anthry1)-2-nitropropene, in which the ethylene group was twisted out of the plane of the aromatic ring and the resonance stabilization between the ethylene group and the aromatic ring was limited , gave only cis-trans isomerization.

Irradiation of 1-(3-pyridy1)-2-nitropropene gave an oxime. The effect of added HC1 on the reactivity of 1-(3-pyridy1)-2-nitropropene showed that the rate for the formation of oximinoketone was decreasing., while irradiation of 1-phenyl-2-nitropropene with HC1 showed that the rate for the formation of oximinoketone was increasing.

From these observation, steric factors and resonance factors are …

Removal Of Nitrogen & Sulfur From Coal-Derived Liquids & Identification Of Nitrogen & Sulfur Compounds In Coal-Derived Liquids, Tay-Yean Lin May 1978

Removal Of Nitrogen & Sulfur From Coal-Derived Liquids & Identification Of Nitrogen & Sulfur Compounds In Coal-Derived Liquids, Tay-Yean Lin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Since all the nitrogen compounds that have been identified in coal-derived liquids in the past have been basic in character, the effect of an acid-wash on the nitrogen content of coal-derived liquids was examined. Because sulfuric acid is the cheapest of the commerical strong acids, it was the natural choice, and its use was examined in detail. The greater the concentration of the sulfuric acid used, the greater the amount of nitrogen removed. :he sulfur compounds in coal-derived liquids were not removed noticeably by extraction with sulfuric acid. Column chromatography is a possible technique for removal of nitrogen compounds. The …

Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz May 1978

Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Natural hazards have been an increasing problem in wildland recreation areas. This study attempted to identify factors affecting park visitor perception of and preparedness for hazards.

A model was formulated incorporating three major independent variables which might affect park visitor responses to hazards. These were: (1) previous experience, (2) information about hazards provided by the park administration (such as warnings located on signs or in brochures), and (3) visitor perception of whether responsibility for hazards rests with the individual or with an outside authority such as government or God. Trip length and knowledge of hazards were also thought to be …

Plant Succession Studies On Subalpine Acid Mine Spoils In The Beartooth Mountains, Patricia Lea Howard May 1978

Plant Succession Studies On Subalpine Acid Mine Spoils In The Beartooth Mountains, Patricia Lea Howard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Large areas within alpine and subalpine tundra have been by disturbed by mining during this century. The most promising method for retarding deterioration of these areas is revegetation with native species through both seeding and transplants. One natural process of revegetation which occurs on portions of many existing disturbances seems to be the establishment of a few species that expand with time to form matts of plants.

At the McLaren Mine, located at 3000 m elevation in the Beartooth Mountains, Montana, active succession is occurring and is dominated by Carex species. Seed viability and successional patterns studies were conducted on …

Surficial Deposits And Geologic History, Northern Bear Lake Valley, Idaho, George C. Robertson Iii May 1978

Surficial Deposits And Geologic History, Northern Bear Lake Valley, Idaho, George C. Robertson Iii

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Detailed geologic mapping and subsurface study of late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in northern Bear Lake Valley show at least four episodes of deposition of fluvial, marsh, bay, and lacustrine sediments. from oldest to youngest, these are the Ovid, Liberty, Wardboro, and Lifton episodes. These episodes are substantially different than those proposed by previous investigators. The informal term Bear Lake Formation is formally redefined here as the Bear Lake Group, and includes the newly defined Ovid Formation, Liberty Formation, Lanark Formation, and Rainbow Gravel. The overlying Wardboro Loess, also defined here, provides a probably age of 11,000 to 8,000 years …

Conservation According To The Pure Theory Of Exhaustible Resources, George Lymbouris May 1978

Conservation According To The Pure Theory Of Exhaustible Resources, George Lymbouris

Economics Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to develop a theory for defining optimal conservation and applying definition to the prevailing rate of domestic petroleum production. Optimal conservation is defined as action designed to achieve or to maintain, from the point of view of society as a whole, the maximum present value of natural resources (or of a natural resource). The proper "action" is defined according to the pure theory of exhaustible resources. The literature survey is a chronological series of articles concerning this theory.

Through building a model which shows that optimal conservation occurs when the marginal internal rate of …

Maximal Residue Difference Sets Modulo P, Duncan A. Buell, Kenneth S. Williams May 1978

Maximal Residue Difference Sets Modulo P, Duncan A. Buell, Kenneth S. Williams

Faculty Publications

Let p ≡ 1 (mod 4) be a prime. A residue difference set modulo p is a set S = {ai} of integers ai such that (ai/p) = +1 and ((ai - aj)/p) = +1 for all i and j with ij, where (n/p) is the Legendre symbol modulo p. Let mp be the cardinality of a maximal such set S. The authors estimate the size of mp.

Autecology Of Selected Genera Of Mississippian, Permian And Triassic Ammonoids: Analysis Of Coiling Geometries, Edward Ellis Chatelain May 1978

Autecology Of Selected Genera Of Mississippian, Permian And Triassic Ammonoids: Analysis Of Coiling Geometries, Edward Ellis Chatelain

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ammonoids were collected from the Chainman Formation (Mississippian) of southeastern Nevada and southwestern Utah, the Phosphoria Formation (Permian) of southeastern Idaho and westernmost Wyoming, and the Thaynes Formation (Triassic) of northeastern Nevada and southeastern Idaho. The collections are interpreted to represent unwinnowed, untransported death assemblages of ammonoids which were subject to chemical conditions of the nekto-benthic environment. Associated lithologies were sampled and geochemically analyzed for content of phosphate and organic matter. Ammonoid fossil collections, combined with ammonoids illustrated in the literature, were subjected to the graphical W and D analysis of Raup (1967). The basic parameters involved in the description …

Multicollinearity And The Estimation Of Regression Coefficients, John Charles Teed May 1978

Multicollinearity And The Estimation Of Regression Coefficients, John Charles Teed

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The precision of the estimates of the regression coefficients in a regression analysis is affected by multicollinearity. The effect of certain factors on multicollinearity and the estimates was studied. The response variables were the standard error of the regression coefficients and a standarized statistic that measures the deviation of the regression coefficient from the population parameter.

The estimates are not influenced by any one factor in particular, but rather some combination of factors. The larger the sample size, the better the precision of the estimates no matter how "bad" the other factors may be.

The standard error of the regression …

Interpretation Of Principal Components, Marwan A. Dabdoub May 1978

Interpretation Of Principal Components, Marwan A. Dabdoub

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The principal component analysis can be carried out two ways. First the R-mode:

R = K'K

and the second is the Q-mode:

Q = K K'

where K is a data matrix centered by column or by row. The most commonly used method is the R-mode.

It has been suggested that principal components computed from either the R-mode or the Q-mode may have the same interpretation. If this is true, then interpretation of the principal components could be put on a much more intuitive level in many applications. This will occur whenever one type of principal component …

Calculation Of Galois Groups, Daniel Schnackenberg May 1978

Calculation Of Galois Groups, Daniel Schnackenberg

Theses and Dissertations

In the 19th Century Galois developed a method for determining whether an equation is solvable. It relied on the close relationship between fields and their automorphism group. This paper is a survey of the techniques of Galois theory. After presenting the main results of elementary Galois theory and some useful facts about factorization, I develop the important methods of calculating the Galois group and give a proof of the Chebotarev density theorem.

Studies Toward The Synthesis Of A- And B- Mercapto Alanine Derivatives, And Of A,B- And B, B- Dimercapto Alanine Derivatives, Aldean James Kolar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A convenient, economical, large scale synthesis of N-acetyldehydro-alanine (a-acetamidoacrylic acid) and its methyl ester was developed via a sequence of N-chlorination-dehydrochlorination. The method was extended to the synthesis of the corresponding N-benzoyl, N-phenylacetyl and N-benzyloxycarbonyl derivatives.

The conversion of a-methoxy-N-acetyl alanine derivatives to the corresponding a-mercapto alanine derivatives, using zinc chloride and an appropriate mercaptan, was investigated. Methyl a-methoxy-N-acetyl-D, L-alaninate was successfully converted to the a-acetylthio derivative, in 24% yield; however, a 90% yield could be obtained by treatment of the dehydroalanine derivative with hydrogen chloride gas in neat thiolacetic acid.

A facile conversion of the a-acetylthio derivative to the …

Energy And Angular Distribution Of Neutrons From Proton-Proton Inelastic Scattering At 800 Mev, Ted Dean Rupp

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The neutron energy spectra from the reaction p + p → n + p + π+ for an incident proton energy of 800 MeV was measured for all phase space. ++ The channels were dominated by △++. (1232) resonance and had a total cross section of 16 ± 1.5 mb. Also, the data demonstrated the dominance of Sand P waves. The experimental results were compared to isobar, phase space and a one pion exchange model. The isobar and phase space models failed to predict the experimental results; however, the one pion exchange model fit the data for …

The Cerros del Rio volcanic field is located about 10 km west of Santa Fe, New Mexico and southeast of the Jemez Mountains volcanic complex. The field lies on the Jemez- La Bajada constriction which separates the Española and the Albuquerque-Belen basins of the Rio Grande rift. At this point the rift is laterally offset 30 km. Approximately 180 sq km were mapped for this study. The northwestern map boundary parallels White Rock Canyon, a 300 m gorge which has been cut by the Rio Grande within the past 1 m. y. About 60 vents were discovered in the area, …

Meeting The United States Requirement For A Merchant Marine, John F. Drake Apr 1978

Meeting The United States Requirement For A Merchant Marine, John F. Drake

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper will derive the United States' need for a merchant fleet from the facts available, and will express these needs in terms which can be used to form reasonable goals. The history of the U.S. Merchant Marine will then be examined to learn how it arrived at its present status. Successes and failures of industry practices and government support programs will be highlighted, and an examination will be made of the degree to which the needs of the United States can be met with today's U.S. merchant fleet.

Precambrian Geology And Ore Deposits Of The Pecos Mining District, San Miguel And Santa Fe Counties, New Mexico, William Duncan Riesmeyer Apr 1978

Precambrian Geology And Ore Deposits Of The Pecos Mining District, San Miguel And Santa Fe Counties, New Mexico, William Duncan Riesmeyer

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Precambrian terrane north of Pecos, New Mexico, contains metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The subaqueous volcanic rocks are of bimodal composition (basalt-rhyolite). Volcanism was cyclic; three partial or complete cycles are exposed in the study area. A cycle consists of basal basalt, overlying rhyolite and a cap of banded iron formation. The chemical characteristics of the volcanic rocks are similar to those of several modern island arcs, suggesting the Pecos volcanic sequence may represent a portion of a similar Precambrian system.

Diverse structural elements in the study area. are related to four periods of deformation: 1) a Precambrian compressional event, …

The Rush Creek Structure, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Detailed field mapping of surface outcrops in southern Garden County, Nebraska, has revealed a drop of 200 feet in three miles in the elevation of the contact between the Ogallala and pre-Ogallala (probably Brule) Formations exposed on the east side of Rush Creek. Beds of silt, sand, siltstone, and volcanic ash in the are a locally dip to the northwest at angles of up to 8½°. The contact between the two formations cannot be seen on the west side of Rush Creek but beds in the Ogallala Formation there dip to the north and northeast. The unusually long valley of …

Uranium And Other Trace Element Geochemistry On The Hopi Buttes Volcanic Province, Northeastern Arizona, Catherine E. Sullivan Apr 1978

Uranium And Other Trace Element Geochemistry On The Hopi Buttes Volcanic Province, Northeastern Arizona, Catherine E. Sullivan

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Hope Buttes volcanic province lies on the southwestern flank of the Black Mesa Basin in northeastern Arizona. Over 200 diatremes occur in this region. The diatremes fill funnel-shaped vents with maar-craters at the surface. They were formed by phreatomagmatic eruptions along existing northwest-southeast fractures during mid-Pliocene time. Anomalous concentrations of uranium occur in at least 20 of the diatremes. The diatremes and dikes which feed them are composed of monchiquite, a feldspar-free lamprophyre containing analcite, and limburgite, a lamprophyre with or without feldspar in a glassy matrix. The presence of zeolites, serpentine, calcite filling fractures, and the high Fe …

Polynomial And Rational Fraction Representations Of A Diatomic Molecular Potential, Paul R. Findley Apr 1978

Polynomial And Rational Fraction Representations Of A Diatomic Molecular Potential, Paul R. Findley

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

A method is presented for approximating a diatomic molecular vibrational potential by fitting to modified forms of the potential. Power's numerical Born-Oppenheimer potential for the H2+ electronic ground state is the potential used in this thesis. The modification procedure is to multiply the potential by various powers of the internuclear separation. This removes the troublesome Coulomb pole at zero internuclear separation. Graphs of the modified forms are presented. Polynomials were fitted directly to the potential, to the modified forms, and to the pure electronic energy. Comparisons are made among the various representations of the potential obtained from the …

Seed Size Selection In Heteromyids: A Second Look, Cliff A. Lemen Apr 1978

Seed Size Selection In Heteromyids: A Second Look, Cliff A. Lemen

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The general conclusion of this paper is that heteromyids do not select seed sizes on the basis of their body size. My conclusion comes from the analysis of new data from central New Mexico, analysis of data in the literature on food habits of heteromyids, and a re-analysis of Brown and Lieberman (1973) and Brown (1975). All of these sources agree that no seed size selection exists.

Although no pattern of simple seed size selection was found, interesting differences were noticed among species. First, the tendency to husk appears to be related to the size of the rodent. Second, large …

Microhabitat Selection In Two Species Of Heteromyid Rodents, Cliff A. Lemen, Michael L. Rosenzweig Apr 1978

Microhabitat Selection In Two Species Of Heteromyid Rodents, Cliff A. Lemen, Michael L. Rosenzweig

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

An experiment was conducted to determine the microhabitat preferences of two heteromyid rodents, Dipodomys ordi and Perognathus flavus. This experiment used marked seeds and the atomic absorption spectrophotometer in order to study the environment as a mosaic of microhabitats. The results of our analysis indicate that these two heteromyids are microhabitat selectors. The preferences of the rodents are, D. ordi: grass habitat 0.0%, near grass habitat 22.5%, open habitat 77.4%, and P. flavus: grass habitat 46.2%, near grass habitat 32.2%, open habitat 21.4%. The overlap between the two species is only 0.43.

Second-Row Molecular Orbital Calculations. 5. A Minimal Basis Indo For Sodium-Chlorine, Mark S. Gordon, Mark D. Bjorke, Fred J. Marsh, Michael S. Korth

Mark S. Gordon

An INDO method is developed for molecules containing Na-CJ. Using only valences and p orbitals, the parametrization is carried out in the spirit of the approach originally taken by Pople and co-workers. The reliability of the method is tested by calculating geometries, dipole moments, and internal rotation barriers for approximately 100 molecules. The improvement in predictive ability relative to previous parametrizations is considerable. Predicted geometries are nearly as good as those for ST03G. Dipole moments of molecules containing Si and Clare in excellent agreement with experiment, while for P and S the agreement is only fair.
