Extreme Evapotranspiration By Irrigated Alfalfa: A Consequence Of The 1976 Midwestern Drought, Norman J. Rosenberg, Shashi B. Verma Feb 1978

Extreme Evapotranspiration By Irrigated Alfalfa: A Consequence Of The 1976 Midwestern Drought, Norman J. Rosenberg, Shashi B. Verma

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The rate of evapotranspiration by irrigated alfalfa at Mead, NE (41°09'Nj 96°30'W, elevation 354 m) reached record levels in 1976. Evapotranspiration was measured with precision weighing lysimeters in a field 1.9 ha in size. Evapotranspiration ranged during the growing season from 4.75 to 14.22 mm day-l and exceeded 10 mm day-I on one-third of the days studied. On each day of study the ratio of latent heat flux density (LE) to the sum of the net radiation and soil heat flux densities (Rn+S) was such that LE/ (Rn+S) > 1, indicating the occurrence of significant …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentary Petrology, And Depositional Environments Of Tillite In The Upper Precambrian Mount Rogers Formation, Virginia, Richard L. Rexroad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The upper member of the upper Precambrian Mount Rogers Formation of southwestern Virginia includes thick units of massive conglomeratic mudstone Interpreted as tillite (Rankin, 1970; Blondeau and Lowe, 1972; Blondeau, 1975; Schwab, 1976). The tillite is composed of unsorted angular plutonic, metamorphic, volcanic, and sedimentary rock fragments enclosed within a matrix of sandy hematitic mudstone. The tillite is interbedded with arkosic sandstone, argillite, and conglomerate. Sedimentary structures and textures of these units suggest deposition by glaciers which protruded from land into a standing body of water as floating ice. Glacial drift was deposited in a large body of water, probably …

Local And Regional Components Of Sensible Heat Advection, Thomas W. Brakke, Shashi B. Verma, Norman J. Rosenberg Feb 1978

Local And Regional Components Of Sensible Heat Advection, Thomas W. Brakke, Shashi B. Verma, Norman J. Rosenberg

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Detailed knowledge of the advection of sensible heat is necessary to understand the energy balance of the evaporating surface in many parts of the world. Sensible hear advection can result from regional and/or local sources. The local and regional components of sensible heat advection (Aloc and Areg, respectively) are identified and their magnitudes in a semi-arid to sub-humid zone are established in the work reported here. Measurements of dry- and wet-bulb air temperature, wind speed and net radiation were made above an irrigated alfalfa field with relatively dry surrounding upwind at Mead, NE. A modified Bowen ratio-energy balance method which …

Reaction-Diffusion Inequalities In Cones, Randy Vaughn, V. Lakshmikantham Feb 1978

Reaction-Diffusion Inequalities In Cones, Randy Vaughn, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

Recently there has been a growing interest in the study of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations [2,3,4,7] because of the fact examples of such equations occur in population genetics [2,5,12,13], nuclear and chemical reactors [2,7,8], conduction of nerve impulses [1,7,15], and several other biological models [1,6,15]. As is the case of ordinary differential equations [9,10], it is natural to expect that the theory of reaction-diffusion inequalities and comparison theorems will play a prominent role in this study. In this paper, we consider reaction-diffusion equations which are weakly coupled relative to an arbitrary cone. We prove a result on flow-invariance which is then …

Comparative Enzymology Of Glyoxalase I, Christina Margaret Schimandle Jan 1978

Comparative Enzymology Of Glyoxalase I, Christina Margaret Schimandle

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The role of the metal ion in rat erythrocyte glyoxalase I was evaluated. The apoenzyme was formed by dialysis against an EDTA-imidazole buffer. Fluorescence studies of the Mg++- and Mn++-dansylated glyoxalase I's suggest that the metal ion is near the active site of the enzyme and participates in the catalytic reaction. Stereochemical studies of the conversion of methylglyoxal to S-lactoylglutathione with Mg++, Mn++, Co++ and Ni++-glyoxalase I's show that the 0-lactate of S-lactoylglutathione (97±1.5%) is formed. This result suggests that the reaction mechanism is the same with a change …

A Random Walk In A Random Environment, Edwin Andrew Sanchez Jan 1978

A Random Walk In A Random Environment, Edwin Andrew Sanchez

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this dissertation we consider a model of a random walk, (Zn}, on R(1) where the distribution of (Zn} is dependent on a stochastic process (Yn} and is given by gy(z) where Yn-1 = y . Conditions on the environmental process (Yn} are given for which transience or recurrence of the random walk (Zn} can be detennined. The probability of n absorption and mean time problems are solved when (Yn} is a finite Markov chain and (Zn} is a classical random walk on …

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate Jan 1978

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Experiments were conducted on large field cores to determine the relationship between drainage volume and water table depth for five soils. The measured drainage volumes were less than predicted from the soil water characteristics for three soils, but were in good agreement for the other two. Drainable porosities were calculated from both theoretical and experimental drainage volume-water table depth relationships by assuming that the unsaturated zone is essentially 'drained to equilibrium, with the water table. The experimental drainable porosities thus obtained were less than predicted.

Drainable porosities for drainage in two-dimensions were calculated from experimental results for one-dimension by assuming …

Deuterium Lamb Shift Via Quenching-Radiation Anisotropy Measurements, A. Van Wijngaarden, Gordon W. F. Drake Jan 1978

Deuterium Lamb Shift Via Quenching-Radiation Anisotropy Measurements, A. Van Wijngaarden, Gordon W. F. Drake

Physics Publications

The Lamb shift of a hydrogenic ion can be deduced from the anisotropy in the angular distribution of the 2s12-1s12 electric field quenching radiation. The accuracy of our previous anisotropy measurement for deuterium is improved to about ± 150 ppm. The derived Lamb shift is (1059.36±0.16) MHz. The sources of error are carefully analyzed and the prospects for further improvements in the accuracy are discussed. © 1978 The American Physical Society.

Angular Integrals And Radial Recurrence Relations For Two-Electron Matrix Elements In Hylleraas Coordinates, Gordon W. F. Drake Jan 1978

Angular Integrals And Radial Recurrence Relations For Two-Electron Matrix Elements In Hylleraas Coordinates, Gordon W. F. Drake

Physics Publications

General formulas are obtained for the reduction of a wide class of two-electron matrix elements in Hylleraas coordinates to finite sums of radial integrals for states of arbitrary angular momentum. Multipole transition integrals and the Breit interaction are treated as special cases. A number of recurrence relations are derived for radial integrals containing PL(cosθ) (where cosθ=r^1•r^2) in terms of radial integrals containing lower-order Legendre polynomials. The results are well suited to computer implementation. © 1978 The American Physical Society.

Modeling Sediment Movement In The Turbidity Maximum Of An Estuary, Allbert Kuo, Maynard M. Nichols, James Lewis Jan 1978

Modeling Sediment Movement In The Turbidity Maximum Of An Estuary, Allbert Kuo, Maynard M. Nichols, James Lewis

Books

This research developed a two-dimensional, time-dependent numerical model to simulate the movement of water and suspended sediment in the turbidity maximum of an estuary. This model is a systematic sequence of mathematical procedures derived from the mass-balance equation and the equation of motion. Lateral integration is used to obtain two-dimensional equations; these equations are integrated with depth over the height of successive layers. Finite difference equations then are written for each layer and solved numerically using prescribed boundary conditions.

Spatial Segmentation Of The Urban Housing Market, Risa Palm Jan 1978

Spatial Segmentation Of The Urban Housing Market, Risa Palm

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Neighborhood correlates of house price changes for the San Francisco Bay area are analyzed for the metropolitan area as a whole, and also for sub markets defined on the basis of real estate board jurisdictions, the racial ethnic composition of neighborhoods, and the average house price of neighborhoods. Regression analysis reveals different patterns of correlates for the market and submarket models, and an F-test indicates that the board of realtors submarket model is superior to the other models in accounting for variance in price change. These findings suggest that sub market models should be used in the analysis of housing, …

Critical Evaluation Of The Pulsed-Current Resistance Meter For Detection Of Decay In Wood, Douglas D. Piirto, W. Wayne Wilcox Jan 1978

Critical Evaluation Of The Pulsed-Current Resistance Meter For Detection Of Decay In Wood, Douglas D. Piirto, W. Wayne Wilcox

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

An evaluation of a pulsed-current resistance meter ("Shigometer®", Model No. 7950) for facilitating detection of decay was performed on wood blocks of giant sequoia heartwood and of white fir sapwood. As decay progressed over a 12-week incubation period, a trend of lower meter readings was obtained, confirming reported field measurements of other workers. Variability in meter readings in situations where the range in resistance readings between sound and decayed wood is narrow (e.g., giant sequoia heartwood) and apparent inability of the meter to make readings necessary to diagnose decay at MCs common to wood in service without ground or water …

Freezing Points Of Aqueous Alcohols: Free Energy Of Interaction Of The Choh, Ch₂, Conh And C[Double Bond]C Functional Groups In Dilute Aqueous Solutions, B. Y. Okamoto, R. H. Wood, Peter T. Thompson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The freezing temperatures of dilute aqueous solutions of methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, t-butanol, cyclohexanol and ethylene glycol were measured over the concentration range 0.1 to 1 mol kg–1. Osmotic coefficients at 0°C were calculated. The limiting pairwise interaction coefficients of the alcohols, plus a variety of polyhydroxy compounds and carbohydrates, were calculated at 25°C from the available data and then correlated using the additivity principle of Savage and Wood. This correlation approximates effective free energies of CH2 and CHOH group interactions with themselves and with each other. Literature data were used to estimate interactions between CONH and C[double bond]C groups. …

Rapidly Converging Activity Expansions For Representing The Thermodynamic Properties Of Fluid Systems: Gases, Non-Electrolyte Solutions, Weak And Strong Electrolyte Solutions, R. H. Wood, T. H. Lilley, Peter T. Thompson Jan 1978

Rapidly Converging Activity Expansions For Representing The Thermodynamic Properties Of Fluid Systems: Gases, Non-Electrolyte Solutions, Weak And Strong Electrolyte Solutions, R. H. Wood, T. H. Lilley, Peter T. Thompson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

For dilute gases and non-electrolyte solutions in the McMillan–Mayer standard state, an activity expansion due to Mayer has great advantages over the normal concentration expansion (virial equation) for strongly associating species. For weakly interacting systems, both approaches are suitable. The activity expansion eliminates the need to differentiate between strong “chemical” interactions and weak “physical” interactions since the same equation is used in each situation. The equation has been modified to represent electrolyte solutions in the McMillan–Mayer standard state by requiring that it be consistent with the Debye–Hückel and higher order limiting laws for strong electrolytes and that it be equivalent …

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

Construction of the proposed Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project in Aroostook County, Maine will result in the isolation of an area of land due to the impoundment behind Dickey Dam. This land area is located between the United States - Canadian border, the Little Black River, the impoundment (elevation = 913 feet), the Big Black River, and the Shields Branch of the Big Black River, and comprises 183,768 acres of land. A previous report (ERT, 1977) determined the forest types within two miles of the impoundment but did not extend to the Canadian border. This report addresses the forest types

Sediment mercury concentrations higher than levels normall y considered trace or background were encountered up to 80 cm belo w the sediment-water interface in samples obtained from four oligotrophi c lakes in northern Maine . These lakes are in three different watershed s and are as far as 65 km apart . The values reported are far lower than levels reported elsewhere from contaminated sites . The distributio n and magnitude of the sediment concentrations encountered suggest long-ter m diffuse mercury inputs to the lakes from the watersheds . In addition , concentrations up to twice as high in near-surface …
