The Vapor Phase Oxidation Of 1, 3-Pentadiene, David E. Sasser Jan 1978

The Vapor Phase Oxidation Of 1, 3-Pentadiene, David E. Sasser

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The vapor phase oxidation of 1.3-pentadiene, over heterogeneous catalysts, was investigated with the objective of producing 2,4-pentadienal and 2,4-pentadienoic acid. Copper and cobalt-molybdenum catalysts, both supported and unsupported, were utilized at various reaction temperatures, residence times and feed ratios. The matter of 1,3-pentadiene vaporization and introduction into the reactor system proved to be critical. Low temperature vaporization of the hydrocarbon and dilution with the oxidant, air, was found to be necessary to avoid polymerization of the feed. Alumina-supported catalysts were found to be very active, leading to severe cracking of the hydrocarbon feed and subsequent carbonization of the catalysts. Silica-supported …

A Direct Computational Method For Estimating The Parameters Of A Nonlinear Model, Jerome Eisenfeld, Stephen W. Cheng Jan 1978

A Direct Computational Method For Estimating The Parameters Of A Nonlinear Model, Jerome Eisenfeld, Stephen W. Cheng

Mathematics Technical Papers

We consider the system identification problem which deals with determining information about the unknown constant matrices A, B, and C or the linear dynamical system: [see pdf for notation], where u(t) and y(t) are given discretely on the interval [0,T]. This leads to a nonlinear estimation problem, or a so-called deconvolution problem, which deals with estimating the number of components [see pdf for notation], the decay rates [see pdf for notation], and the corresponding amplitudes [see pdf for notation] in the model: [see pdf for notation] from the given discrete data [see pdf for notation]. Deconvolution problems are important in …

The Coma/A1367 Supercluster And Its Environs, Stephen A. Gregory, Laird A. Thompson Jan 1978

The Coma/A1367 Supercluster And Its Environs, Stephen A. Gregory, Laird A. Thompson

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The three-dimensional galaxy distribution in the region of space surrounding the two rich clusters Coma and A1367 is analyzed by using a nearly complete redshift sample of 238 galaxies with mp < 15.0 in a 260 degree2 region of the sky; 44 of these redshifts are reported here for the first time. We find that the two clusters are enveloped in a common supercluster which also contains four groups and a population of isolated galaxies. The least dense portions of the Coma/A1367 supercluster have a density which is approximately 6 times that of the Local Supercluster in the regions of our own Galaxy. In …

Radionuclide Concentrations In The Arkansas River Upstream And Downstream From The Nuclear I Power Generating Facility, D. M. Chittenden Ii

Technical Reports

This report summarizes results obtained from a program designed to measure very low levels of some commonly produced radionuc1ides in the Dardenelle Lake area of the Arkansas River near the Arkansas Nuclear I Power Station operated by Arkansas Power and Light Company. The main thrust of this program was to determine the increase in the concentration of the radionuclides as a result of reactor operation as a function of their distance from the source. It was hoped to extend this study to include the effects of these emissions on the uptake of radionuclides into biological systems and their deposition in …

Concentration Of Radionuclides In Dardanelle Lake, Arkansas, David M. Chittenden Ii, Larry Mcfadden Jan 1978

Concentration Of Radionuclides In Dardanelle Lake, Arkansas, David M. Chittenden Ii, Larry Mcfadden

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Concentrations of the nuclides ⁹⁰Sr - ⁹⁰Y, ¹⁴⁴Ce - ¹⁴⁴Pr, ¹³⁷Cs, ³⁸Co, ¹¹⁰ͫAg, ¹⁴¹Ce and ⁸⁹Sr have been measured monthly since November, 1975. The results from the period September, 1976, to August, 1977, depend on the relative intensities of the sources of the radionuclides; emissions from Nuclear I, the Chinese nuclear tests of Fall, 1976, and fallout from older atmospheric tests.

Pre- And Post Impoundment Ichthyoparasite Succession In A New Arkansas Reservoir, David A. Becker, William D. Carr, Robert G. Heard, Donald G. Cloutman, Perry D. Holmes, Wallace A. Evans, Mitchell D. Norman, Wilbur B. Owen Jr.

Technical Reports

Helminth and crustacean parasites from 2,387 Micropterus dolomieui, M. punctulatus, and M. salmoides were utilized to monitor annual pre- and postimpoundment succession patterns spanning eight con- tinuous years in Beaver Reservoir, Arkansas. Incidence of infection by ichthyoparasites with direct life cycles (monogenetic trematodes, leeches, and crustaceans) generally increased following impoundment, although leeches remained relatively constant. Exceptions to this general pattern occurred. Incidence of ichthyoparasites with indirect life cycles (digenetic trematodes, cestodes, acanthocephalans, and nematodes) decreased immediately following impoundment with subsequent increases to a point equal or above that of preimpoundment, although exceptions occurred. Time for species adaptation to the reservoir …

The Effect Of Slow Two‐Electron Transfers And Disproportionation On Cyclic Voltammograms, Michael D. Ryan Jan 1978

The Effect Of Slow Two‐Electron Transfers And Disproportionation On Cyclic Voltammograms, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The EE mechanism (two‐electron transfer) for cyclic voltammetry was investigated in considerable detail along with the effect of disproportionation. The theory was developed for either the first or second electron transfer being slow while the other one was reversible. It was possible to develop generalized working curves for the height and shape of the wave regardless of the difference in Eo's and the values of α and Ks. This theory was then applied to the analysis of the reduction of benzil in the presence of alkaline earth ions in dimethylformamide.

A Solid State 13C-Nmr Study Of Diamonds And Graphites, Charles A. Wilkie, Thomas C. Ehlert, Daniel T. Haworth

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The 13C-NMR spectra of gem quality and industrial diamonds show two resonances with the more intense resonance at high field. Two resonances are also shown in 13C-NMR spectra of various graphites; however, the low field resonance is of greater intensity than the high field resonance in the graphites. The resonances are very broad and they are assigned to graphite type (sp2) carbon and diamond type (sp3) carbon.

The 13C-Nmr Solid State Spectroscopy Of Various Classes Of Coals, Charles A. Wilkie, Daniel T. Haworth

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The 13C-NMR spectra of various classes of coal obtained in the solid state show two resonances, one of which is assigned to aromatic carbon and the other to aliphatic carbon. The resonances are very broad with the high field resonance centered at about 7 ppm below tetramethylsilane and a low field resonance centered at about 140 ppm below tetramethysilane. Based on our previous solid state 13C-NMR studies of graphite and diamond, the high field resonance is typical of a sp3 carbon whereas the low fields resonance is assigned to a sp2 carbon whereas the low fields …

Direct Determination Of Pentachlorophenol By Differential Pulse Polarography, Albert L. Wade Jan 1978

Direct Determination Of Pentachlorophenol By Differential Pulse Polarography, Albert L. Wade

Theses and Dissertations

Concern over environmental contamination leading to the introduction of pentachlorophenol into human and animal systems has resulted in the need for a rapid and direct method for determining trace concentrations of this highly toxic compound. A direct electrochemical procedure has been developed for determining trace conccentrations of this phenol dovm to 0.27 ppm. This method uses the electrochemical techniques of differential pulse polarography at the dropping mercury electrode, and differential pulse voltammetry at the carbon paste electrode to reduce pentachlorophenol for this determination. Cyclic voltammetry at the hanging mercury drop electrode has been used to characterize the reaction behavior of …

System Identification Of Models Exhibiting Exponential, Harmonic And Resonant Modes, B. Soni, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

A classical problem arising in compartmental analysis is the so called identification problem or the inverse problem. One is presented with the linear time invariant compartmental model [see pdf for notation] [see pdf for notation] Where A is a square matrix and the dimensions of B and C are consistent with that of A. The problem is to estimate a certain subset of the matrix elements [see pdf for notation], [see pdf for notation] and [see pdf for notation] from discrete observations of the input vector u(t) and the output vector y(t). When instantaneous mixing is assumed the analogous equations …

Spin Correlations In Actinide Materials: A Neutron Study Of Usb, G. H. Lander, S. K. Sinha, Don M. Sparlin, O. Vogt

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements have been made of the short-range spin correlations in USb, a metallic compound that orders antiferromagnetically. The system has no transverse fluctuations, and the longitudinal spin correlations are anisotropic, showing stronger interactions within the ferromagnetic sheets than between them. The results of this and other experiments can be understood with simple concepts involving the bonding of 5f electrons. © 1978 The American Physical Society.

Primary Productivity, Water Quality, And Limiting Factors In Lake Chicot, Edmond J. Bacon Jan 1978

Primary Productivity, Water Quality, And Limiting Factors In Lake Chicot, Edmond J. Bacon

Technical Reports

Primary productivity, water quality, and limiting factors of productivity were studied in Lake Chicot from 1 July 1975 to 30 September 1977 to ascertain the ameliorating effects of a comprehensive water quality improvement project. The upper lake receives only limited local run-off, but run-off from 350 square miles of agricultural land enters the lower lake through Connerly Bayou, the principal polluted tributary. Run-off over the predominantly silt and clay soils in the subsidized agricultural area contributes excessive amounts of colloidal silt and clay to the lower lake. Connerly Bayou also contributes additional amounts of nutrients including calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, …

Proton Spin-Lattice Relaxation And Methyl Group Rotation, Peter A. Beckmann, C. I. Ratcliffe, B. A. Dunell Jan 1978

Proton Spin-Lattice Relaxation And Methyl Group Rotation, Peter A. Beckmann, C. I. Ratcliffe, B. A. Dunell

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Proton spin-lattice relaxation times have been measured at 16, 31, and 59 MHz in 4-methyl-2,6-ditertiarybutyl phenol between 80 K and its melting point, 340 K. The variation of T1 with temperature shows too distinct minima. The lower-temperature minimum has been analyzed in terms of relaxation by reorientation of four of the six t-butyl methyl groups with an average apparent activation energy of about 2.4 kcal mole−1 (104 meV molecule−1). The higher-temperature minimum has been analyzed in terms of relaxation by reorientation of the t-butyl groups about their C3 axes with four of the six t-butyl methyl groups reorienting …

Electron Spin Relaxation And Tunnelling Methyl Groups, Peter A. Beckmann, S. Clough Jan 1978

Electron Spin Relaxation And Tunnelling Methyl Groups, Peter A. Beckmann, S. Clough

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

The energy transfer has been studied between free radicals and nearby tunnelling methyl groups near the resonant condition that the electron Larmor frequency and the methyl tunnelling frequency are equal. The measurements were made in a gamma -irradiated single crystal of 4-methyl-2,6-ditertiarybutylphenol (MDBP) at 4.2K and consisted of saturating the ESR signal and observing its return to equilibrium. This has been done at eleven ESR frequencies in the range 8.97< nu s<0.63 GHz and for saturation times of 5, 50 and 200 s. A theoretical model has been developed for the non-exponential recovery which assumes that all the 4-methyl groups of the molecules surrounding a free radical have the same tunnelling rotation frequency nu t and that the only coupling between the electrons and the methyl groups is the intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction.

The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan Jan 1978

The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan

CCPO Publications

During a 3-day anchor station in shelf waters off St. Augustine, Florida we observed the effect of an intruding mass of deeper Gulf Stream water. The shelf waters were relatively low in nutrients and salinity while the Gulf Stream waters were high in salinity and nutrients. Onshore currents correlated with increases in nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations.

The advection of higher nutrient Gulf Stream water coincided with high chlorophyll (∼ mg chl a m−3) concentrations and dense populations of Phaeocystis pouchetii (up to 3.12 × 10°1−1). Zooplankton sampling was impossible in the bottom layer because of the …
