The utility of NMR spectroscopy to the study of liquids or solids dissolved in liquids is well known. This technique has been used infrequently to studies in the solid state[I,2]. Work has been done on diamond, graphite and coa113-6]. The ¹³C-NMR of ebony and ivory have been studied by the magic angle technique[7]. The solid state ¹³C-NMR spectra of graphite and diamond can be interpreted in terms of tetrahedral (sp³) and trigonal planar (sp²) carbon atoms[8]. We now report our investigations using solid state ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy to study various types of carbides.

The purpose of the work described in this thesis was the synthesis of a new class of surfactants containing chiral cationic end groups and the synthesis of two chiral reactant molecules which would react in the presence of these surfactants. The structures of the surfactant and substrate molecules were designed to maximize their stereochemical interactions and in this way reveal details of the nature of micellar catalysis. In order to indicate why these structures were selected, several examples of micellar catalysis and the factors influencing it will be discussed in the following pages.

The Geology Of Southwestern Fidalgo Island, Daryl Gusey

Detailed geologic mapping of rocks in the upper stratigraphic levels of the Fidalgo ophiolite Indicates that keratophyres and spilites are interbedded with tuffaceous sediments, sedimentary breccias, and graywacke. Sedimentary breccias containing plutonlc rock fragments as well as volcanic rock fragments are common. The graywackes were derived from a volcanic source area. Radiolaria In the tuffaceous sediments indicate a depositional age of Lower Kimmeridgian to Upper Valanginian.

Compared to the stratigraphy and petrology of other ophiolites and present-day tectonic environments, the Fidalgo Complex most closely resembles that of ancient and modern island-arc sequences.

Stoichiometric association constants of NaSO₄^-, NaCO₃^- and NaHCO₃^- ion-pairs were determined over the temperature range 10 - 40°C at several ionic strengths by using a sodium ion selective electrode. At zero ionic strength values for K°_A,NaSO₄^- are 15.8 ± .4, 8.5 ± .2 and 4.6 ± .3 at 10°, 25° and 40°C, respectively; like values for K°_A,NaCO₃^- are 17.1 ± 1.4, 19.1 ± .6 and 21.0 ± .7. Carbonyl complexes of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten have been synthesized in which two potentially chelating tetraphenyldiphosphinoethane molecules (Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂) are bound as monodentate ligands. The reaction of trans-(CO)₄M(PPh₂CH=CH₂)₂ (M = Cr, Mo, W) with diphenylphosphine (PPh₂H) in the presence of potassium t-butoxide yields trans-(CO)₄M(PPh₂CH₂CH₂PPh₂)₂. Introduction: Since pipe made of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) is relatively new, its hydraulic characteristics that cause fluid friction head loss are not as well known as those of cast iron and concrete pipe. The lack of universally accepted roughness parameters for PVC pipe is attested by the fact that most textbooks dealing with the hydraulics and the fluid mechanics do not include such values. The general goal of this study was to develop a functional model of the sociological and related hydrologic elements in flood control decision-making. Conceptual system models were developed for the hydrologic system and for the sociological system. The sociological variables were identified as they related to the steps in the process of the model. Following the conceptual decision process model the social elements of the model were calibrated from data obtained from field studies and mathematical equations were developed and tested. Rivers draining arid basins increase in salinity content in the downstream area to the point where water users are often significantly damaged. The problem in some cases can be ameliorated by altering upstream water and land use practices. An economic trade off exists between the cost of such upstream efforts and the downstream benefits achieved. This report examines options for salinity management in the Colorado River Basin. The study sought to provide additional information to estimate 1) economic damages caused by various salt concentrations to agricultural and municipal water users and 2) economic costs of salinity control measures by upstream …

·1ow cost erosion control structures were installed at ten shoreline sites located in the lower Chesapeake Bay and on the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers to further test the applicability of the perched beach concept under diverse littoral environments. The perched beach is achieved via installation of a low sill parallel to the shoreline. The objective of the sill is to provide a partial barrier behind which an elevated (perched) beach is accreted. When successful, ~he perched beach backshore and foreshore acts to reduce the frequency of direct wave attack against the fastland and thereby reducing the erosion rate. In this …

Clay Mineralogy And Origin Of The Huntingdon Fire Clays On Canadian Sumas Mountain, South British Columbia, Duane G. Horton

Three fire clay seams occur near the base of the Eocene Huntingdon formation at Canadian Sumas Mountain, southwest British Columbia. The three seams are separated from each other and overlain by coal partings.

The fire clays consist predominately of b-axis disordered kaolinite with minor amounts of quartz, detrital coal and x-ray amorphous iron oxides. They contain scant amounts of anatase, siderite, illite, and expandable clays. Expandable clays are concentrated in the fine clay fractions and illite is concentrated in the coarse clay fractions.

The lowermost fire clay seam contains better ordered kaolinite and fewer non-kaolinitic minerals than do the overlying …

The upper Eocene to lower Oligocene Goble Volcanic series of southwest Washington is a thick sequence of areal to submarine basaltic to andesitic flows, pyroclastics, and minor sediments. Major element geochemical analyses suggest that these rocks may represent early magmatism of the Cascade arc. Paleomagnetic results from 37 sites indicate that the direction of remanent magnetization in the Goble Volcanics has a declination of 18.5°, an inclination of 57.5°, and a circle of 95% confidence (∝ ₉₅)of 4.33°. The expected upper Eocene direction in the sampling area is D = 353.5°; Ī = 61.5°. Thus the Goble Volcanics block …

The Origin Of Serpentinites Associated With The Shuksan Metamorphic Suite Near Gee Point, Washington, Daniel L. Wilson

Metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Shuksan Metamorphic Suite near Gee Point have been contact metamorphosed by high-temperature emplacement of ultramafic rock. This intrusion occurred at great depth (>25 km) and caused contact temperatures of about 500°C, resulting in epidote-amphibolite facies metamorphism. Minerals of the contact metamorphism are overprinted by mineral assemblages of the regional Shuksan blueschist facies metamorphism. The K/Ar age of the epidote-amphibolites is Jurassic (145-160 m.y.), and thus the age of Shuksan metamorphism is probably younger than Middle Jurassic.

The evidence presented suggests that terraces and related features found on Bay View Ridge, Skagit County, Washington are raised marine in origin, and formed 13,000 - 11,000 years before present during the Everson Interstade of the Fraser Glaciation. Methods of investigation included topographic profiling, geologic mapping of surface deposits, identifying primary sedimentary structures, grain-size distribution analyses, identifying textural surface features on quartz grains utilizing the Scanning Electron Microscope and radiocarbon age dating.

Little or no measurable differential vertical tectonic and/or glacio-isostatic relative movement has occurred at Bay View Ridge since the Everson Interstade. Volcanic ash found in two peat bogs …
