Determination Of The Rate Of Formation Of Hcn, Mitchell Hull Nov 1977

Determination Of The Rate Of Formation Of Hcn, Mitchell Hull

Honors Theses

Nitric oxide is a major air pollutant arising from fossil fuel combustion, yet the fuel contribution to its formulation is uncertain. Since, in combustion, fossil fuels undergo disintegration before oxidation takes place, the study of the pyrolsis of a model constituent of fossil fuels can shed light on NO formation. The rate of inert pyrolytic disappearance of pyridine and the rate of formation of the principal Nitrogen-containing pyrolytic product, HCN, was studied in an inert atmosphere. The rate constant for the formation of HCN and its temperature dependence were determined.

Alignment Of Helium Excited By Thin Carbon Foils, R. D. Hight, R. M. Schectman, H. G. Berry, G. Gabrielse, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We have measured the linear polarization of the 5016-Å, 2s 1S-3p 1P transition of Hei excited by a thin carbon foil perpendicular to the incident He+ beam at ion energies 50-500 keV. We find that the alignment of the 3p 1P term depends upon the beam current density within the range (2- 150 μA cm-2) measured. Oscillations in the dependence of both M / I (the linear polarization fraction) upon energy and the current density variation of M / I with energy are observed. We discuss possible origins of these variations.

Fixed Point Theorem For Non-Expansive Mappings On Banach Spaces With Unifformly Normal Structure, B. B. Williams, A. A. Gillespie

Mathematics Technical Papers

In [1] Kirk proved that if D is a bounded, closed, and convex subset of a reflexive Banach space that has normal structure, then every non-expansive mapping of D into D has a fixed point. This was also proved for a uniformly convex space by Browder [2]. In this paper we replace uniformly convex, or reflexive and normal structure, by uniformly normal structure to obtain this result. Let S be a bounded subset of the Banach space X and [see pdf for notation] (1) [see pdf for notation] (2) [see pdf for notation] (3) [see pdf for notation] A space …

Ferromagneticlike Resonance Behavior In Superfluid 3he-B, Richard A. Webb Oct 1977

Ferromagneticlike Resonance Behavior In Superfluid 3he-B, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

Nonlinear cw NMR behavior, similar to that observed on ferromagnets at high rf powers, has been observed in superfluid 3He-B using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer in fields of 31, 102, 180, and 308 Oe and at a pressure of 21 bar. It is observed that beyond some threshold value of the transverse H1 field the z component of magnetization anomalously decreases and is followed by a rapid increase back to the normal resonance curve as the frequency of the H1 field is swept through resonance.

Thermochromism In A Polydiacetylene Crystal, R.R. Chance, R.H. Baughman, H. Muller, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

Specular reflection spectra are reported for a thermochromic polydiacetylene crystal, ETCD [substituent group – (CH2)4OCONHC2H5] over the temperature range 23–130°C. A reversible thermochromic phase change occurs at ~120°C and is accompanied by a 2750 cm-1 blue shift in the reflection spectra. Evidence is presented which strongly suggests that the dramatic change in optical properties of ETCD at the phase transition is due to an acetylene to butatriene transformation in the bonding sequence of the polydiacetylene backbone.

The Water Monomer On The Basal Plane Of Ice Iₕ: An Effective Pair, Central Force Potential Model Of The Static Interaction, Jerry Kiefer, Barbara N. Hale Oct 1977

The Water Monomer On The Basal Plane Of Ice Iₕ: An Effective Pair, Central Force Potential Model Of The Static Interaction, Jerry Kiefer, Barbara N. Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The H2O-H2O intermolecular central force potential of Lemberg and Stillinger is used to obtain optimal binding energy surfaces, vibrational frequencies, and bonding configurations of an adsorbed water monomer on a model basal plane of ice Ih. The monomer interacts (pairwise) with 50 molecules arranged in two layers of the unrelaxed bulk ice lattice. The results of calculations for three model surface sites of differing proton arrangement indicate the existence of diffusion barriers of the order of 2.5 kcal/mole and optimal monomer bonding sites at about 9 kcal/mole with nonepitaxial characteristics. Perspective computer-drawn plots of …

Hydraulic Resistance Of Grass Media On Shallow Overland Flow, David K. Tao, Billy J. Barfield, Austin E. Lyons Oct 1977

Hydraulic Resistance Of Grass Media On Shallow Overland Flow, David K. Tao, Billy J. Barfield, Austin E. Lyons

KWRRI Research Reports

Simulated dense vegetation with random blade arrangements and different blade flexibilities were used to determine the hydraulic properties of flow of small, non-submerging depths. With the water flowing among the randomly patterned vegetation blades, drag resistance becomes the dominant force that retards the flow. An equation of flow was established based on the momentum balance in the system. Experimental results were used to determine the coefficient of blade resistance, RD, and plotted in terms of blade width and flow depth Reynolds number respectively.

Assessment Of The Water Quality In The Salt River Prior To Its Impoundment In Anderson And Spencer Counties, Kentucky, Andrew C. Miller, Louis A. Krumholz, Stuart E. Neff, Darly E. Jennings, Patricia B. Olmes, David S. White Oct 1977

Assessment Of The Water Quality In The Salt River Prior To Its Impoundment In Anderson And Spencer Counties, Kentucky, Andrew C. Miller, Louis A. Krumholz, Stuart E. Neff, Darly E. Jennings, Patricia B. Olmes, David S. White

KWRRI Research Reports

Monthly water samples were taken and analyzed to determine the water quality of the Salt River in Anderson and Spencer counties Kentucky prior to the river's impoundment. Sediments from the area watershed were analyzed to total acid digestion, barium chloride extraction, and aqueous extraction methods. Rainwater and runoff water were collected and analyzed for major cations and anions from two sites in the watershed.

The Salt River at Taylorsville is characterized by hard water with high levels of calcium (33.5-74.8 mg/1), bicarbonate (136-236 mg/l), specific conductance (200-535 μmhos/cm), and sulfate (16.5-71.5 mg/l). Nitrates (0.6-5.7 mg/l), phosphates (0.2-2.4 mg/l), sodium (3.2-20.3 …

Pitman-Closeness Efficiency Of Estimators Of Reliability With Application To The Exponent/Al Failure Model, Jerome P. Keating, Danny D. Dyer Oct 1977

Pitman-Closeness Efficiency Of Estimators Of Reliability With Application To The Exponent/Al Failure Model, Jerome P. Keating, Danny D. Dyer

Mathematics Technical Papers

When there are available several point estimators of component or system reliability, it would be of interest to compare such estimators through some "closeness to the true value of reliability" criteria. Along these lines, the concept of Pitman-closeness efficiency is introduced. Essentially, when comparing two estimators of reliability for a given situation, Pitman-closeness efficiency gives the odds in favor of one of the estimators being closer to the true value of reliability than is the other. Theory is developed which provides a straightforward way to evaluate this measure of efficiency under fairly general conditions on the estimators. Based on this …

The Effect Of Warmed Humidified Oxygen On The Temperature Of Depressed Newborns, Earlene Scharping

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of warmed humidified oxygen on the body temperature of depressed newborns and compare it to the effect of unwarned un-humidified oxygen administered under similar circumstances. The sample group consisted of a total of ten infants (five control and five experimental) with birth weights > 2000 gms who had an Apgar score of less than seven at birth and who required the administration of oxygen. The control group received oxygen in the routine delivery room manner (unwarned and un-humidified). The experimental group received oxygen which had been warmed to a temperature of …

The Parmo De Berlin, Colombia: A Study Of Water Resources In A Rural Andean Community, Daniel Bodo Oct 1977

The Parmo De Berlin, Colombia: A Study Of Water Resources In A Rural Andean Community, Daniel Bodo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The condition of water resources in the rural Andean community of Berlin, Colombia, was explored for the purpose of future development in the area. Through investigation of water acquisition techniques, use, and water discharge methods, combined with analysis of chemical water quality tests, the overall pattern of water resources in the study area was revealed. Although the methods of acquiring water were not found to be especially damaging to water quality, the use, and more importantly, the methods of discharging waste water suggested a water resource base harboring certain questionable qualities. The quality of surface waters, as revealed through analysis …

Suspended Matter And Light Attenuation In A Turbid Estuary, Daniel E. Campbell Oct 1977

Suspended Matter And Light Attenuation In A Turbid Estuary, Daniel E. Campbell

OES Theses and Dissertations

A study was made in Hampton Roads, Virginia, to characterize the suspended matter and to investigate its relationship to the light attenuation coefficient. The study gives a detailed description of the seston and its variations with time and space. An evaluation of the light attenuation coefficient as an indicator of seston distributional parameters was made.

The distribution of the suspended matter is obtained through gravimetric, Coulter counter and microscopic analyses. Microscopic analysis is employed to determine the composition of the seston and ATP determinations give the amount of living biomass. The suspended matter is characterized in terms of weight, numbers, …

Description Of The Larval Development Of Squilla Empusa Say (Crustacea Stomatopoda) With Aspects Of Larval Ecology In Chesapeake Bay, Steven Gaines Morgan

OES Theses and Dissertations

Larvae of Sguilla empusa were collected from the plankton and were reared in the laboratory to describe the pelagic larval development and the postlarval stage. Nine pelagic stages are passed through before the postlarval stage is attained.

The larvae reared for descriptive purposes were subjected to sixteen combinations of temperature and salinity to determine their tolerance to the two parameters. Larvae survived longer and molted more frequently when reared at 25°/oo and 20°C or 25°C, which corresponds to the natural conditions of the Chesapeake Bay when the larvae were collected.

A three year planktonic survey conducted in the lower region …

A Study Of The Gas-Solid Reaction Between Hydrogen Sulfide And Mercury(I) Chloride; Development Of A Method For Determination Of Atmospheric Hydrogen Sulfide, Eric H. De Carlo Oct 1977

A Study Of The Gas-Solid Reaction Between Hydrogen Sulfide And Mercury(I) Chloride; Development Of A Method For Determination Of Atmospheric Hydrogen Sulfide, Eric H. De Carlo

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The possibility of measuring hydrogen sulfide indirectly by measuring the mercury evolved from the gas-solid reaction between hydrogen sulfide and mercury(I) chloride was studied. DMCS treated glass wool was coated with mercurous chloride and used as a conversion material. The response to hydrogen sulfide was studied as a function of concentration and temperature. The possible interference of other sulfur gases and water was examined.

The studies indicated that hydrogen sulfide could be determined at concentrations as low as 15 ppb. It was found that mercaptans would actively interfere with the hydrogen sulfide to mercury conversion, but that sulfur dioxide would …
