Final Report: Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon Sep 1977

Final Report: Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon

Publications (WR)

The Lake Mead Monitoring Program has continued to develop information on the limnological condition of Lake Mead. We have significantly increased our analytical capabilities this year by developing a cooperative project with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and continuing our cooperative program with E.P.A. We also were able to derive significant benefit from the reviews of the Pollution Abatement Project written by Clair Sawyer and Charles Goldman. Partially as a result of these reviews we have had the opportunity to interpret and more fully explain the significance of our work to a wider public audience than would otherwise have been …

Water Conservation In Industrial Filtration Operations, Jim L. Turpin Sep 1977

Water Conservation In Industrial Filtration Operations, Jim L. Turpin

Technical Reports

The washing of a solute from filter cakes was investigated for both saturated and unsaturated washing conditions. Systems used in this experimental study were 0.065 NaCl solution as the filtrate in an aluminum hydrate filter cake and 0.1 Normal HCL solution as the filtrate in a column packed with glass beads. The filtrate concentration as a function of the flow rate of wash water and of the volume of effluent from the packed bed was measured. The amounts of filtrate removed from the bed during saturated washing, and washing employing repetitive steps of saturation followed by evacuation were compared. Also, …

Independence Theories And Generalized Zero-One Laws, Lawrence Stout

Lawrence N. Stout

In this paper an abstract characterization of the properties of independent events is given with examples from topology, probability, and Baire structures. Using this notion of independence, proofs of the Hewitt-Savage and Kolmogorov zero-one laws are given which include the probabilistic case and the topological cases considered by Oxtoby, Christensen, and K. P. S. and M. Bhaskara Rao.

Holcophylloceras burkei, Euhoploceras westi, E. tubereulosum and Strigoceras taylori are described as new, while four new species belonging to the genera Sonninia [?], Bradfordia, Pseudotoites and Witchellia are not formally named. Three ammonite zonules characterize the ammonite sequence of the type Weberg composite section. The sequence correlates with parts of the standard lower and middle Bajocian (Jurassic) of northwestern Europe. In addition, four associations (paleo-communities) of benthic mega invertebrates, the Gervillia, Protocardia, Isocyprina …

The Use Of Nuclear Reactions And Sims For Quantitative Depth Profiling Of Hydrogen In Amorphous Silicon, David D. Allred, G. J. Clark, C. W. White, B. R. Appleton, C. W. Magee, D. E. Carlson Aug 1977

The Use Of Nuclear Reactions And Sims For Quantitative Depth Profiling Of Hydrogen In Amorphous Silicon, David D. Allred, G. J. Clark, C. W. White, B. R. Appleton, C. W. Magee, D. E. Carlson

Faculty Publications

Depth profiles for hydrogen in amorphous silicon have been determined by the use of resonant nuclear reactions [1H(15N,αγ)12C and 1H(19F,αγ)16O] and by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Independent calibration procedures were used for the two techniques. Measurements were made on the same amorphous silicon film to provide a direct comparison of the two hydrogen analysis techniques. The hydrogen concentration in the bulk of the film was determined to be about 9 at % H. The SIMS results agree with the resonant nuclear reaction results to within 10%, which demonstrates that quantitative hydrogen depth profiles can be obtained by SIMS analysis …

Mark S. Gordon

Electrochemical studies were carried out on a series of cyclic 1,2-diones under nonaqueous conditions. From thereduction potentials and Hucke! molecular orbital calculations, the increase in antiaromatic destabilization of cyclobutenedione upon reduction is estimated to be at least 14 kcal/mol. The EPR spectrum of the radical anion of naphtho[b ]cyclobutadienoquinone is presented. Also, INDO calculations were carried out on several of the diones and the results are consistent with the experimental observations.

Beef Cattle Feedlot Runoff And Control In Eastern Nebraska, L. P. Schram, Lynn R. Shuyler

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This study was initiated to determine operational characteristics of runoff control facility components for beef cattle feedlots.

A runoff control facility was designed and constructed for a 3,000 head capacity feedlot in eastern Nebraska. Components of the runoff control facility included debris basins inside the pen and outside the pen, a holding pond, and a disposal system.

Results indicated that design volumes for the debris basins and holding ponds were effective in controlling runoff from the lots caused by snowmelt and rainfall for climatic conditions within eastern Nebraska. Characteristics of runoff transported solids from this large lot compared favorably with …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

High sensitivity magnetic susceptibility determinations, especially in the range 1.2-4.2 K on pure and dilute tris(pyrrolidinecarbodithioato)iron(III) (FeP) in its high spin form, show that a maximum at about 2 K is caused by antiferromagnetic interactions. The analogous chromium(III) complex does not exhibit significant antiferromagnetism compared to that of the iron complex, and it is likely that the upper e electrons possessed by the iron and not by the chromium are responsible for the bulk of the antiferromagnetism. As the iron atoms are about 9 Å apart in discrete molecules, the antiferromagnetic interactions presumably occur between unpaired spins delocalized on to …

Characteristics Of The Mineral And Metal Content Of Suspended Sediment, New River Basin, Tennessee, Richard H. Ketelle

Masters Theses

Large volume (80 liter) water samples were collected from five sites on four streams in the New River Basin of Tennessee for study of the suspended sediment. Parameters selected for investigation were:

(1) Sediment size distribution

(2) Mineral composition of the sediment

(3) Metal content of the sediment

(4) Extractable Fe-Mn Oxide content of the sediment

(5) Association of heavy metals with Fe-Mn oxides

Sediment was separated by gravity settling and continuous flow centrifugation. Size separations showed that most of the sediment was in the 2-5μm size range and 0.2-2μm particles were second most abundant in most samples regardless of …

High Pressure Liquid Chromatographic Methods For The Separations Of Derivatized Alpha-Keto Acids And Thiamine Phosphate Esters, Bruce Clark Hemming Aug 1977

High Pressure Liquid Chromatographic Methods For The Separations Of Derivatized Alpha-Keto Acids And Thiamine Phosphate Esters, Bruce Clark Hemming

Theses and Dissertations

Improved methods have been developed for separation of a-keto acid derivatives and for thiamine and its phosphate esters. Linear gradient reverse phase chromatography using ion-pair formation provides baseline resolution for a seven-component homologous series of a-keto acid dinitrophenylhydrazones having increasing carbon chain lengths. Branched-chain keto acids can also be separated. Aldehyde derivatives were examined as possible interfering compounds. Peak identification in biological material was confirmed for pyruvate by an enzymic peak shift technique. Monitoring near 365 nm permits low nanogram detection. Preliminary studies of keto acids in biological material illustrate the method's applicability. The same system with slight changes separates …

Comparison Of Point Estimators Of Normal Percentiles, Danny D. Dyer, Onas L. Hensley, Jerome P. Keating Aug 1977

Comparison Of Point Estimators Of Normal Percentiles, Danny D. Dyer, Onas L. Hensley, Jerome P. Keating

Mathematics Technical Papers

There are available several point estimators of the percentiles of a normal distribution with both mean and variance unknown. Consequently, it would seam appropriate to make a comparison among the estimators through sums "closeness to the true value" criteria. Along these lines, the concept of Pitman-closeness efficiency is introduced. Essentially, when comparing two estimators, the Pitman-closeness efficiency gives "odds" in favor of one of the estimators being closer to the true value than is the other in a given situation. Through the use of Pitman-closeness efficiency, this paper compares (a) the maximum likelihood estimator, (b) the minimum variance unbissed estimator, …

Analysis Of An Interlobate Boundary In The Wisconsinan Drift Of Kalamazoo County And Adjacent Areas In Southwestern Michigan, Norman A. Lovan Aug 1977

Analysis Of An Interlobate Boundary In The Wisconsinan Drift Of Kalamazoo County And Adjacent Areas In Southwestern Michigan, Norman A. Lovan

Masters Theses

A detailed investigation of selected textural and mineralogical aspects of tills in southwestern Michigan is used to define an interlobe boundary relationship between the Wisconsinan ice of the Lake Michigan and Saginaw lobes. Bedrock underlying the study area contributed little to the bulk composition of the tils investigated. However, morainal development in the study area shows strong correlation with bedrock topography.

In a discussion of the deglaciation of Michigan and the study area, a history of morainal development is reviewed and attention is focused on the reentrant district located in Kalamazoo and neighboring counties. Attempts to delineate tills of the …

A Photochemical Study Of S-Triazolo[4,3-B] Pyridazine And 3-Diazo-4-Oxo-3,4-Dihydroquinoline, John Timothy Carlock Aug 1977

A Photochemical Study Of S-Triazolo[4,3-B] Pyridazine And 3-Diazo-4-Oxo-3,4-Dihydroquinoline, John Timothy Carlock

Theses and Dissertations

When subjected to ultraviolet radiation in the presence of an alkene, s-triazolo[4,3-b]pyridazine (STP) undergoes an unusual 3 + 2 photocycloaddition wherein the alkene adds to the 1 and 8 positions of STP with concommitant N4-N5 bond cleavage yielding 5,6-disubstituted-6,7-dihydro-7-methylene (and 7-cyanomethyl)-5H-pyrrolo[1,2-b]-s-triazoles. Amides and esters of indole-3-carboxylic acid have been synthesized by a novel reaction employing the ultraviolet irradiation of 3-diazo-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinoline (QDA) in the presence of amines or alcohols respectively. QDA, when irradiated, is postulated to undergo an internal Wolff Rearrangement to Indole-3-ketene which can add any amine or alcohol to form the corresponding amide or ester in modest to good …

Real-Time Computer Optimized Scanning Potential Coulometry For Multi-Component Trace Analysis, Norman W. Petty Aug 1977

Real-Time Computer Optimized Scanning Potential Coulometry For Multi-Component Trace Analysis, Norman W. Petty

Theses and Dissertations

The instrumentation and methodology for real-time computer controlled scanning potential coulometry for multi-component trace analysis is described. The sensitivity limit was determined to be 10^-8 F for electrochemically reversible constituents. The sensitivity limit could be extended if measures were taken to compensate for the periodic signal found on the electrolysis current. Non-linear least squares curve fitting methods accurately resolved iron-platinum and silver-iron interferences to give accurate determinations for iron and silver. The resolving capability of this method was tested using theoretically generated scanning potential coulograms. The computer resolved sample constituents with a 1 to 100 concentration ratio and a formal …
