The Petrology And Stratigraphy Of The Portland Hills Silt, Rodney Thomas Lentz May 1977

The Petrology And Stratigraphy Of The Portland Hills Silt, Rodney Thomas Lentz

Dissertations and Theses

Topics in geology, which inevitably excite professional discussion and even tempered debate, often present challenging targets for the exploratory jabs of Master's degree candidates. The Portland Hills Silt and the controversy concerning its genesis provides just such an object.

Although the physical descriptions of the silt are generally in agreement, they remain somewhat generalized and, at present, no single definition is generally accepted. Moreover, incongruities concerning structural and textural details--notably, the presence of minor stratification and/or scattered pebbles in the silt--have resulted in considerable disagreement regarding its mode of origin.

Measurement Of The Difference Between The Dynamic Nmr And Static Susceptibilites Of Superfluid 3he-B Using An Rf-Biased Superconducting Quantum-Interference Device, Richard A. Webb May 1977

Measurement Of The Difference Between The Dynamic Nmr And Static Susceptibilites Of Superfluid 3he-B Using An Rf-Biased Superconducting Quantum-Interference Device, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

The temperature-dependent susceptiblity of superfluid 3He-B has been measured both statically and via a pulse technique in a field of 309 G using an rf-biased superconducting quantum-interference device (SQUID). In the pressure range 26.5 to 18 bar, the dynamic NMR susceptiblity agrees qualitatively with the theoretical weak-coupling predictions for the Balian-Werthamer state. However, the static susceptiblity, measured using the same rf-biased SQUID and detection system, is significantly smaller thatn the dynamic susceptibility.

Light Scattering Studies Of Rotational And Vibrational Relaxations Of Acetonitrile In Carbon Tetrachloride, Scott L. Whittenburg, C. H. Wang May 1977

Light Scattering Studies Of Rotational And Vibrational Relaxations Of Acetonitrile In Carbon Tetrachloride, Scott L. Whittenburg, C. H. Wang

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The rotational and vibrational relaxation times of acetonitrile–carbon tetrachloride solutions were investigated as a function of concentration, viscosity, and temperature using depolarized Rayleigh and Raman scattering. Using a Fabry‐Perot interferometer and single frequency laser source, we have shown that reliable results for the single particle orientational correlation times (τs) for CH3CN can be obtained by carrying out a concentration dependent depolarized Rayleigh scattering study. Raman scattering was shown to yield inconsistent results for τs in CH3CN. At constant viscosity, it was found that the Rayleigh scatteringrelaxation time (τRay) of CH3 …

State Effort In Controlling Oil Spills, Victor Alan Bell May 1977

State Effort In Controlling Oil Spills, Victor Alan Bell

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In light of the growing demand for imported oil, the accelerated offshore development program and the recent series of tanker incidents, many states have enacted, or plan to enact, legislation to protect their coastal lands and waters from oil pollution. The purpose of this paper is to outline present state legislation that deals with controlling oil pollution, and stating how this legislation would coexist with existing and proposed federal legislation and the International Conventions. The results of this study point to areas where state legislation would be useful and where overlapping or unnecessary legislation does exist.

Plasma Sheath Analysis By Computer Simulation, Leo J. Rahal May 1977

Plasma Sheath Analysis By Computer Simulation, Leo J. Rahal

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The time development of a fully ionized, dense two-component plasma is investigated through the use of a one-dimensional particle simulation code. The plasma is initially composed of two distinct regions. One region is a uniform plasma in which electrons and ions are at the sane temperature and have no electric fields due to charge separation. The other region contains a charge separation of electrons and ions resulting in an electric field. There also exists an electron current which produces a confining magnetic field. This is the sheath region between the neutral plasma and the confining magnetic field. The simulation occurs …

Infrared Observations Of Hii Regions And Comet West, Paul A. Heckert May 1977

Infrared Observations Of Hii Regions And Comet West, Paul A. Heckert

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In Chapter 1, I outline the methods of making ground-based infrared observations. I concentrate on the observational procedures rather than the instrumental design. Near-infrared observations of S 156A, _S 158A, S 159A, S 162A1, S 228, and G 45. 5 + 0 .1 (#2) made with a beam size of ̴1 are used to estimate the total near infrared flux. After correcting for the line of sight extinction the near infrared luminosities are greater than the Lyman-α luminosities inferred from radio observations. A strong double peaked infrared source was discovered near the region of G 25.3-0.1. The infrared …

Climatic Implications Of Barbados Coral Growth, Richard E. Dodge, Karl K. Turekian, J. Rimas Vaisnys May 1977

Climatic Implications Of Barbados Coral Growth, Richard E. Dodge, Karl K. Turekian, J. Rimas Vaisnys

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Results from a coral growth band analysis utilizing samples of M. annularis from the Recent Barbados reef and from three fossil raised reefs (Barbados I, II, and III dated at 82,000, 105,000, and 125,000 yrs. B.P.) indicate that in the Barbados II collection both average band width and variability were lower than in the other samples. We suggest the climate during formation of the 105,000 yrs. B.P. reef was significantly different than that of the present.

The Impacts Of Agriculture And Pastoralism On Wildlife In The Sudan, Fraser Tong Kuotwel May 1977

The Impacts Of Agriculture And Pastoralism On Wildlife In The Sudan, Fraser Tong Kuotwel

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This report describes the effects of agriculture and pastoralism on wildlife resources in the Sudan. For centuries people in the western and southern Sudan have been earning their living through shifting cultivation and pastoralism. Being one of the agrarian countries of Africa, the Sudan is rapidly undergoing a transition from shifting cultivation to mechanized farming, in order to provide enough food for its rapidly growing human population, and to supply other Arab countries with the surplus. Mechanized farming and water associated development projects have great impact on wildlife resources, ranging from the destruction of wildlife habitat to the isolation of …

Growth-Form-Analysis And Paleoecology Of The Corals Of The Lower Mississippian Lodgepole Formation, Bear River Range, North-Central Utah, Judith M. Miller May 1977

Growth-Form-Analysis And Paleoecology Of The Corals Of The Lower Mississippian Lodgepole Formation, Bear River Range, North-Central Utah, Judith M. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Mississippian (Kinderhookian-Osagean) Lodgepole Formation contains a diverse fossil assemblage. Taxa present include brachiopods, crinoids, gastropods, cephalopods, trilobites and corals. Corals and associated fauna were collected from four localities within the Bear River Range. These are, from north to south, Beirdneau Hollow, Spring Hollow, Leatham Hollow and Porcupine Dam. The well-preserved tabulate and rugose (compound and solitary) corals exhibit a high degree of morphologic variability. The colonial corals of the Lodgepole Formation (particularly Lithostrotionella, Syringopora) exhibit a morphologic gradient from platy to hemispherical forms. The six morphologic categories of colonial corals discussed in this study are identified by mean …
