The Decomposition Of Phenyl-Benzoyl-Diazamethane And Its Relevance To Alkyne Ozonolysis, Joy A . Sawyer Jun 1977

The Decomposition Of Phenyl-Benzoyl-Diazamethane And Its Relevance To Alkyne Ozonolysis, Joy A . Sawyer

Honors Theses

The thermal or photolytic decomposition of diazo compounds is known to produce a carbonyloxide in the presence of oxygen. Analogously, ∝-diazoketones should produce acyl carbonyloxides. This intermediate is identical to one proposed for the ozonolysis of alkynes and its substantiation is the purpose of this study. By examining the products of the thermal, copper catalyzed phenylbenzoyldiazomethane decomposition, one should be able to determine the intermediate’s presence. Benzoic anhydride, benzil and methyl diphenyl-acetate have been identified as products and tetraphenylglycolide is also thought to be present. Methyl diphenyl-acetate is the result of Wolff rearrangement, while the other three are proposed to …

Mechanisms Of Saponification Of Sterically Hindered Esters By Optical Activity And Kinetic Studies, George A. Walrath Jun 1977

Mechanisms Of Saponification Of Sterically Hindered Esters By Optical Activity And Kinetic Studies, George A. Walrath

Honors Theses

This thesis presents methods for preparation of sterically hindered organic acid esters. The secondary- and tertiary-butyl esters of 2,2’ dimethylpropanoic acid (pivalic acid, neo-pentanoic acid, or trimethyacetic acid) were prepared by suggested methods. The best method proved to be that suggested by Bochkova, Proskuryakov, Pirozhkoc and Eidus, where the esters of neo-acids are prepared through their respective acid chlorides. In the case studies in this thesis, the acid chloride of neopentanoic acid (pivaloyl chloride) was reacted with secondary or tertiary-butyl alcohol. Kinetic studies of the saponification of secondary-butyl pivaloate were made at various temperatures, and from the data obtained, the …

The Study Of Gas Decomposition Due To Laser Stimulation, James A. Burke Jun 1977

The Study Of Gas Decomposition Due To Laser Stimulation, James A. Burke

Honors Theses

A survey of various gases known to emit radiation when pumped with a laser was undertaken to discover whether or no these gases would decompose as a result of the laser stimulation. A literature search provided some previous work in this area but left many gases unstudied. Methanol, 1,1-difluoroethylene, ethanol, methylene chloride and methyl iodide were subjected to laser irradiation, Using an infrared spectrophotometer as a detector, none of these five gases showed clear evidence of decomposition, Because of inherent limitations of the IR detection system, a mass spectrometer was put into operation. Calibration of this instrument was performed, Results …

Synthetic Approaches To Specifically Labeled Dimethyl-Dideuterionaphthalenes, Armand J. Scatena Jun 1977

Synthetic Approaches To Specifically Labeled Dimethyl-Dideuterionaphthalenes, Armand J. Scatena

Honors Theses

The purpose of this work was the study of synthetic approaches to specifically labeled deuterated 1, 4-dimethylnaphthalenes. Alkylation of ortho- and para-dibromobenzenes eventually led to the formation of some 1, 4-dimethylnaphthalene although deuteration was rather poor. Under the conditions employed, much isomerization of Friedel-Crafts products resulted. Not only did the bromines rearrange intramolecularly, but substantial rearrangement of the alkylating moiety may also have occurred. The major products of these reactions were dibromophenylcyclohexanes. It appears from the products obtained by the methods employed in our work that specific monodeuteration rather than specific dideuteration should be used to attain the desired product.

The Carbon Dioxide Laser Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Curtland Chester Brown Iii Jun 1977

The Carbon Dioxide Laser Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Curtland Chester Brown Iii

Honors Theses

The carbon dioxide laser irradiation of Freon 113, 1,1,2 trichlorotrifluoroethane, yielded Freons 11, trichlorofluoromethane, l2, dichlorodifluoromethane, and 13, chlorotrifluoromethane, along with chlorotrifluoroethylene and unidentified products. Product formation was found to increase as the pressure of the starting material and laser power were increased, although no formal pressure or power dependenry could be determined. The Freon products were identified using a gas chromatograph in the flame ionization mode with a molecular sieve column. Chlorotrifluoroethylene was identified with an infrared spectrophotometer. The buildup of unidentifiPd brown tars was observed on the glass walls of irradiated cells. The pyroysis of Freon 113 has …

Metal-Ion Oxidative Decarboxylations. 9. Reaction Of Benzilic Acid With Cerium(Iv) In Acidic Perchlorate And Sulfate Media, Samir B. Hanna, Sezai A. Sarac Jun 1977

Metal-Ion Oxidative Decarboxylations. 9. Reaction Of Benzilic Acid With Cerium(Iv) In Acidic Perchlorate And Sulfate Media, Samir B. Hanna, Sezai A. Sarac

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The kinetics of oxidation of benzylic acid (HLH) to benzophenone by cerium (IV) has been studied in several media using the stopped-flow technique. In HClO4-Na2SO4-NaClO4 media, which allow for the variation and control of the concentrations of the various Ce(IV) species at constant [H+] and ionic strength, the rate data suggest CeSO42+ as the kinetically relevant species. In HClO4 the observed first-order rate constants, tetrad, first increase with increasing HLH concentration, then decrease slightly at higher substrate concentrations suggesting the intermediacy of two complexes: a reactive [Ce(IV)HL] and …

Stochastic Models For Precipitation, Peter Purdue, Z. Govindarajulu Jun 1977

Stochastic Models For Precipitation, Peter Purdue, Z. Govindarajulu

KWRRI Research Reports

In this project a stochastic model, using Semi-Markov Processes, was developed to simulate daily rainfall patterns in Kentucky. This model contains many of the currently used models as special cases and is applicable at any station in Kentucky as well as elsewhere.

For use in Kentucky an 8 state Semi-Markov Process is developed and the parameters of the model are determined from historical rainfall data. The model is tested at 4 different stations in Kentucky and the simulated and actual rainfall processes are found to be in good agreement. Finally some long run probabilities are calculated as well as mean …

Optimal Systems Of Storm Water Detention Basins In Urban Areas, D. K. Mynear, C. T. Haan Jun 1977

Optimal Systems Of Storm Water Detention Basins In Urban Areas, D. K. Mynear, C. T. Haan

KWRRI Research Reports

Flood retention basins are commonly used in urban areas to reduce the impact of urbanization on downstream flooding. When more than a few acres are developed, systems of retention basins are often required. A procedure has been developed whereby the optimum (least cost) system of basins can be determined to meet a given downstream flow requirement. The method considers several design options including basins on all subwatersheds, basins on only some of the subwatersheds, basins of various sizes and basins with various stage-discharge characteristics. The procedure has been developed in the form of a computer program to aid the designer …

Simulation Of The Sedimentology Of Sediment Detention Basins, A. J. Ward, C. T. Haan, B. J. Barfield

KWRRI Research Reports

Sediment detention basins are a widely used means of controlling downstream sediment pollution resulting from stripmining and construction activities. A mathematical model for describing the sedimentation characteristics of detention basins has been developed. This model requires as inputs the inflow hydrograph, inflow sediment graph, sediment particle size distribution, detention basin stage-area relationship and detention basin stage-discharge relationship. Based on this information the model routes the water and sediment through the basin. In this routing process the outflow sediment concentration graph, the pattern of sediment deposition in the basin and the sediment trapping efficiency are estimated. Comparison of predicted results with …

Metal-Ion Oxidative Decarboxylations. 10. Substituent Effects In The Cerium(Iv)-Benzilic Acids Reaction, Samir B. Hanna, Sezai A. Sarac Jun 1977

Metal-Ion Oxidative Decarboxylations. 10. Substituent Effects In The Cerium(Iv)-Benzilic Acids Reaction, Samir B. Hanna, Sezai A. Sarac

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The rates of oxidation by cerium (IV) of several substituted benzylic acids (unsubstituted, 2,2′-dichloro, 4,4′-dichloro, 4,4′-dimethyl, 4,4′-dimethoxy, and 4,4′-dinitro) to the corresponding benzophenones have been studied spectrophotometrically in aqueous H2SO4, aqueous HClO4-HOAc, and acetonitrile. The rates are much slower in H2SO4 than in the other two media, probably because of heavy sulfato complexation of cerium(IV). The px as of the various acids were determined potentiometrically. The Hammett p values in acetonitrile and HClO4-HOAc media, derived from correlations with several sets of σ constants and with the newly determined pK …

The Effect Of Endodontic Therapy On The Incidence Of Radiation Caries In Dogs, James A. Abbott Jun 1977

The Effect Of Endodontic Therapy On The Incidence Of Radiation Caries In Dogs, James A. Abbott

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Endodontic therapy was evaluated as a possible control or prevention modality of radiation type dental caries in dogs. Two adult male dogs with permanent dentitions had endodontic therapy performed on alternating teeth in each jaw. The nontreated teeth served as controls.

The dogs were irradiated with 7000 rad Cobalt-60 radiation fractionated over an eight week period. The dogs were killed at 60 and 182 days post-irradiation. The teeth were removed from the jaws and immersed in methylene blue dye, sectioned, and the dye penetration pattern photographed. Diffusion of the dye into the tooth structure was quantified and statistically analyzed.

Sobolev Type Differential Equations, M. E. Lord, V. Lakshmikantham Jun 1977

Sobolev Type Differential Equations, M. E. Lord, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

An imbedding method for solving linear Fredholm integral equations was introduced by Sobolev [3] which involves the solution of the following differential equation with initial value for the resolvent kernel [see pdf for notation]. The differential equation in (1.1) is unusual in that the solution K(t,y,x) is evaluated at different combinations of the independent variables (t,y,x) . We will refer to any differential equation with this property as a Sobolev type differential equation. We introduce a Sobolev type differential equation which generalizes (1.1) and consider conditions for existence and uniqueness. A Picard type theorem is obtained, which by way of …

A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr. Jun 1977

A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr.

Theses

The thesis titled "A Consciousness Simulation Model" by R. Edward Mitchell (1977) explores the theoretical design of a digital model aimed at simulating human consciousness. The model is structured around a collection of independent processing modules that mimic various human cognitive and emotional processes. These modules include components for thought selection, ego/achievement, memory, and emotion processing, which interact with one another in a fashion that simulates aspects of human thought and behavior.

Mitchell's primary goal is to develop a system that could behave more like a human, particularly in communication and decision-making processes, to improve human-machine interaction. The thesis highlights …
