The Prediction Of The Temperature Of Small Clear Streams, Robert Nelson Crittenden

A theoretical energy balance model was used to predict water temperatures in small clear streams which have limited heat transfer due to ground water flow. The model was designed for application to coastal streams in central California to determine reservoir release policies that would improve downstream salmon habitat by altering stream temperatures. The results of the model are predicted to be applicable to small clear streams in moderately calm and humid areas throughout the temperate zone, where the winters are not prolonged, and where there is little ground Hater flow.. Mechanisms based on carbonium ion, carbeno and carbenoid type intermediates are proposed. A mechanism based on the nucleophillic attack (S_N2) of water on the carbon center leading to a metal-formyl type intermediate is suggested as best fitting all the criteria observed in these studies.

To many investigators, these observations suggested the existence of a molecular “pump” mechanism responsible for the maintenance of the ionic gradients. Extensive research over the last twenty years has resulted in the assignment of this role to the magnesium-dependent, sodium- and potassium-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase, first reported by Skou in 1957. This membrane-bound enzyme is the subject of the research presented in this thesis.

Recently Wulfman found great merit in Barut's idea on atomic super-multiplets, and he introduced the concept of the generalized Hamiltonian that is the Hamiltonian of all atoms. ²⁴ Investigating the Schrodinger equation with this generalized Hamiltonian, it should be possible to relate the properties of different atoms and find the structure of the periodic chart from fundamental principles of dynamics and group theory. Other sources include ground water supplies and the piped Comprehensive Water Scheme.

The March 1970 census included questions on farm water supplies including how farmers coped in the 1969-70 drought.

Shallow wells and soaks with very limited yields were the principal water sources for the early settlers.

Hundreds of such wells were constructed by the Public Works Department in remote areas.

In the early 1930s major development of water supplies from rock catchments was begun in the central wheatbelt.

After the war, larger and more effective earth moving equipment became available. The Public Works Department rehabilitated many old excavated dams as well as constructing new ones.

Roaded catchments were also developed during this post-war period. many farmers took advantage of Public Works Department technical advise and hired a P.W.D. grader …

Of the estimated 76 000 farm dams in the wheatbelt, about 8 per cent either leak or are salt affected. The remaining 70 000 dams are capable of holding water for livestock use and can be regarded as sercicable dams.

A great many of the serviceable dams are unreliable water supplies due to the combined effects of lack of runoff from catchments, shallow depth of storage and small size of storage in relation to expected demand from livestock and evaporation loss.

The European wasp was detected in Western australia for the first time in January and February 1977 in the metropolitan suburbs of Mosman Park, Cottesloe and Attadale.

So far it has only been found within an area of 8 km radius from Fremantle but the outer boundries of the infestation are still uncertain.

It is Department of agriculture policy to eradicate the European wasp, if possible, and to destroy all nests detected.

Saltland can be conveniently divided into three main types on the basis of cause. Within each type their is great variation, and the types may merge or overlap.

Levels of total and fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci in the Mattaponi, Pamunkey and York Rivers were monitored for one year in the vicinity of the town of West Point, Virginia. These parameters were also determined for selected process waste waters and effluents from the Chesapeake Corporation, West Point, Virginia.

Merocyanine dyes exhibit interesting changes in absorption spectra with changes in solvent polarity. For example solutions of 1-methyl-4- (oxocyclohexadienylidene) ethylidene -1,4-dihydropyridine (MOED) are yellow, red, violet, or blue, in water, ethanol, acetone or pyridine respectively.¹ More striking effects are observed when aqueous solutions are diluted with various proportions of the organic co-solvents such as pyridine. This dissertation is from the Joint Program Degree from the College of William & Mary and University of Virginia and awarded by the University of Virginia.

The effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on salt marsh grasses and gastropods were examined under three different circumstances. In the first study reported, a small pocket marsh was repeatedly dosed with small amounts of a No. 2 fuel oil. The second study investigated the effects of a large accidental spill of No. 6 fuel oil. The third study involved single doses of a fresh and a weathered crude oil on artificially enclosed segments of marsh.

A comparison of effects of conditioning adult oysters (Crassostrea virginica) with Cornstarch and/or Tetraselmis suecica and raw water were determined on subsequent larval growth, vigor and successful metamorphosis. Possible correlations of lipid content of eggs and larval growth, vigor and metamorphosis was also examined. Results illustrated the effectiveness of Cornstarch when used as a supplemental conditioning agent for producing larvae and spat in greater quantity and of better quality than the other conditioning diets employed. Investigation revealed that lipid content of eggs is an important indicator for larval growth, vigor, set and successful metamorphosis. This dissertation is from the Joint …

Benthic communities in the estuarine portion of the James River are controlled mainly by salinity. Pollution effects are localized and difficult to assess because of the rigorous physical environment. Mesohaline and oligohaline communities were very similar to those in other east coast estuaries. except for the dominance of Rangia cuneata in the oligohaline zone. Communities of the tidal freshwater zone are most affected by pollution. In the areas of Richmond and Hopewell, where the major portion of the pollution load enters the river, communities are most severely depressed.
