Water resources data for the 1976 water year for Nebraska consist of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage and contents of lakes and reservoirs; and water levels and water quality in wells and springs. This report contains discharge records for 146 gaging stations; stage and contents for 9 lakes and reservoirs; water quality for 40 gaging stations, 18 ungaged stations, 27 partial-record flow stations, and 96 wells; and water levels for 66 observation wells. Also included are 114 crest-stage partial-record stations and 12 low-flow partialrecord stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not part …

A literature review of past and on-going research and activities of the principal investigators is the basis for evaluating environmental effects of highways in wetlands. Values of wetl8,$1ds are discussed briefly. Physical. biological and chemical impacts are associated with highway construction. operation and maintenance. Environmental impacts are scaled in terms of magnitude and duration and mitigating measures are identified. The foregoing are summarized in matrices. The report further identifies further research which is needed to design highway projects with environmental aspects in mind.

Petrology And Major Element Geochemistry Of Albite Granite Near Sparta, Oregon, Robert Brayton Almy Iii

Albite granite near Sparta, Oregon occurs in an igneous complex containing serpentinite, gabbro, diorite, tonalite and granite with overlying keratophyric and spilitic volcanic rocks. This igneous suite is overlain by Triassic limestones of reef origin. In all the igneous rocks primary hypidiomorphic and porphyritic textures predominate but a metamorphic overprint of the prehnite-pumpellyite facies is widespread. Whole rock chemical analyses show that albite granite has relatively high Si0₂ (69-81%) and Na₂0 (4-7%) and low K₂O (0.1-1%). Rare plagioclase potassium-feldspar granite contains up to 3.6% K₂O.

The study area is in the northeast corner of the Tanacross quadrangle, east-central Alaska. Known as the Interior Porphyry belt, it lies between the Tintina fault to the north and the Denali fault to the south. Seven major porphyry copper-type deposits have been found within the belt since I969. Because much of the belt was unglaciated during Pleistocene time, the probability of finding a zone of supergene enrichment is enhanced. In Alaska a porphyry copper-type deposit with a supergene zone may improve the current economic status by helping to facilitate amortization of production capital costs.

The inhomogeneous wave equation for a special class of magnetoatmospheric waves is formally solved, and the principle of stationary phase used to provide information on the group velocity properties of such waves. General results are presented concerning the associated mechanical energy flux. The basic problem considered is relevant to waves initiated by sudden events in the solar atmosphere.

Mammoth Cave, a large limestone cavern in Mammoth Cave National Park in the Central Kentucky karst, was first mined for saltpetre in 1808 and was a major source of nitrates used in the manufacture of gunpowder during the War of 1812. The mechanism of saltpetre formation is unknown, although hypotheses encompassing both biotic and abiotic functions have been suggested. Present studies were conducted in various saltpetre caves using species specific fluorescent antibodies in order to determine if the chemoautotroph, Nitrobacter, were present. Sphaeromicola cebennica juberthiei n. ssp., a cavernicolous ostracod found in the South of France (Système de Cent Fons and Avencas, Herault), is described here. The new subspecies differs from Sph. cebennica cebennica (found in a cave from Ardèche) by the smaller carapace and a reduced distal bristle on the ‘finger” of the male copulatory organ. The affinities and differences between the European Sphaeromicola and Sph. cirolanae from Mexico are discussed. The genus Sphaeromicola is divided into two groups of species: the group topsenti and the group cirolanae. Some observations on the mating process of Sph. Cebennica juberthiei are presented. …

Variation Among Populations Of The Troglobitic Amphipod Crustacean Crangonyx Antennatus Packard Living In Different Habitats I. Morphology, Gary W. Dickson

Populations of the troglobitic (i.e., obligatory cavernicole) amphipod Crangonyx antennatus living in two distinct aquatic habitats were examined for possible morphological variation. Collections were made seasonally for one year in six Lee Co., Virginia caves, three with mud-bottom pools and three with small gravel-bottom streams. Environmental parameters thought to influence population variation were recorded for each of the six caves. Body length of mature amphipods was found to be greater in the mud-bottom pool habitats, whereas stream amphipods possessed more first antennal segments per unit body length. This new species was captured in the phreatic waters of Guadalquivir valley, where it lives together with another, very small-sized Stenasellid: St. bragai Magniez, previously described. It belongs to the phyletic line of St. breuili Racovitza, which colonizes the subterranean waters of the Iberic peninsula.

A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima

Modern and ancient environments associated with Lakes Algoma and Huron were studied according to attributes of stratigraphy, sediment texture, parameters, sediment size distribution, bedforms, and primary sedimentary structures. Results from a computation of wave refraction diagrams and from an examination of the wave climate characteristics indicate that the modern embayment is low energy.

A sediment texture comparison between modern and ancient environments indicates that higher energy pervailed in the ancient environment relative to the present day environment. The cobble and gravel sediments as well as an extensive belt of foredunes preserved in the ancient environment are evidence of this high …

The Preparation Of Coordination Compounds Of Rhodium (Iii) With Cycloalkanecarboxylic Acid, Robert Adrian Alameda

The purpose of this study was to prepare and characterize the coordination compounds produced by the reaction of five cycloalkanecarboxylic acids and a rhodium salt. The five acids that furnished the ligands were: cyclopropanecarboxylic acid, cyclobutanecrboxylic acid, cyclopentanecarboxylit acid, cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, and a cycloheptanecarboxylic acid. The rhodium (Ill) ion was provided by the salt Na₃RhCl₆•12H₂0, A survey of the available literature indicated that these rhodium (Ill) cyclo-alkane carboxylates had not previously been prepared.

Sizable investments have been made and continue to be made throughout the world to develop irrigation potentials. Recent food shortages have heightened the concern for obtaining greater returns to irrigation through improved water management and use. A knowledge of how plant growth cycles relate to moisture and salinity levels in the root zone is prerequisite to developing practical ways of maintaining optimum conditions for maximum production per unit of water concerned. A joint research effort by the Utah Water Research Laboratory and the Nevado Center for Water Resources Research applied two multiobjective planning models to the Virgin River Basin in order to test the efficiency and practicality of applying such tools in water resrouces planning. The surrogate Worth Trade-off (SWT) method couples mathematical optimization to quantify trade offs among noncommensurable objectives with interviews to compare public preferences with respect to these trade offs. Planning engineers commonly use generous factors of safety for peak flow estimates in urban water supply systems both as a hedge against unforeseen growth and because economies of scale result in relatively low user costs even with such reserve capacity. Transplanting of such design criteria into the rural setting, however, simply does not work. The low density portions of rural domestic systems require very realistic design criteria or the construction costs become infeasible for the small number of customers involved. Hail damage in Utah was examined for individual counties and the entire state. A survey of informal observes was taken and the resulting data base was analyzed. Data from NWS was also examined. County hail damage figures average 4 to 5 percent of production and ranking of counties according to dollar damage occurs in only 4 of the 29 counties (Box Elder, Utah, Millard, and Cache). In many cases the highest dollar damage occurred in the counties of greatest dollar damage should receive the greatest concentration of hail suppression effort. A method utilizing ice crystals to circumvent nucleation processes in cloud seeding activities is discussed in the framework of nuclei activation concepts. Ice, in the form of small crystals, would be a highly efficient cloud seeding materia up to 0 degrees Celsius. The lower limit on humidity would necessitate dispensing the crystals into air that is saturated with respect to ice but no requirement for 100 percent RH(relative humidity) was found. In fact, the lower limit varies with temperature linearly from about 95 percent RH at -5 degrees Celsius to 75 percent RH at -30 degrees Celsius. Preparation of small …
