Energy Dependence Of Amorphizing Implant Dose In Silicon, John R. Dennis, Edward Boyd Hale Dec 1976

Energy Dependence Of Amorphizing Implant Dose In Silicon, John R. Dennis, Edward Boyd Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The radiation-induced transformation from crystalline to amorphous silicon was studied using ion implantation. The ion energy was varied from 20 to 180 keV for Li+, N+, Ne+, Ar+, and Kr +. The energy dependence of the critical amorphizing dose was determined by electron spin resonance. Comparison of the data with theoretical calculations of the energy density deposited into atomic processes showed good agreement. This energy-dependent agreement gave evidence that energy density is important to the transformation at both low and high implantation temperatures.

Review Of Quantum States Of Atoms, Molecules And Solids, M. Eugene Rudd Dec 1976

Review Of Quantum States Of Atoms, Molecules And Solids, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

The subjects of atomic, molecular and solid-state physics have only rarely been treated at an advanced level in a single volume. The notable exception, of course, is John C. Slater’s Quantum Theory of Matter. In the present book the three authors, Michael Morrison, Thomas Estle and Neal Lane, stress the unity among these fields by ernphasizing the concept of electronic quantum states in atoms, diatomic molecules and crystalline solids. Such a combination should be of basic interest to students in a variety of scientific fields and also form the basis for more advanced work in those three subjects themselves. …

Voltammetric And Electrochemical Kinetic Studies Of The Halides And Halogens At A Platinum Rotating Ring-Disk Electrode In Anhydrous Acetic Acid, Donald Harrison Cranney

Theses and Dissertations

The electrochemical behavior of the iodine-iodide couple was investigated in both basic and neutral acetic acid solutions at a platinum rotating ring-disk electrode. Voltammetric curves were obtained and discussed. Various kinetic parameters were determined and by comparing to theoretical kinetic parameters a probable reaction mechanism was deduced. The mechanism that best fit experimental results is the following I- + S = I(S) + e- I(S) + I- = I2 + S + e (slow). The electrochemical behavior of bromine, bromide, and chloride was also investigated in the same media. Voltammetric curves were recorded and discussed with emphasis on the hysteresis …

A Study Of Selected Photo Fries Rearrangements, Elwood Lloyd Loveridge Dec 1976

A Study Of Selected Photo Fries Rearrangements, Elwood Lloyd Loveridge

Theses and Dissertations

The Fries rearrangement of phenyl esters is reviewed and compared to the reaction when light is the source of energy. The products are different due to different mechanism of reaction. Light energy causes either free radical or concerted reactions. The S-phenylthiol esters and anilides were studied also. Although many of the rearrangements are the same, we did not see any alkyl migration nor decarboxylation type reactions with either the sulfur or nitrogen compounds. Three papers have been published from this work: Bradshaw, J. S., Knudsen, R. D. and Loveridge, E. L., J. Org. Chem., 35, 1219 (1970); Bradshaw, J. S., …

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht Dec 1976

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …

Potentiostatic Studies Of The Oxide Growth Rate Law For The Alkaline Silver Electrode ; Iii. The Determination Of Ionic Transport In Silver Oxide Using Radiotracer Techniques With Ag[Superscript 110m], Reed Harold Chase

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of ultrasonic vibration on the anodic oxidation of silver foil in KOH was studied. An increase in charging capacity of approximately 20% was found to be the result of cavitation erosion. Silver wire was exposed to tension and torsion during oxidation but no change in charge acceptance was caused by these stresses. The oxide growth rate on silver foil electrodes was compared to rate equations that have been proposed for other metals. Uhlig's equations for the growth of semiconductor oxides was found to describe most of the data. The data did not fit other rate equations. Determination of …

Ultraviolet Stimulated Thermoluminescent Response Characteristics Of Aluminum Oxide, Edward Ryan Dec 1976

Ultraviolet Stimulated Thermoluminescent Response Characteristics Of Aluminum Oxide, Edward Ryan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This investigation has demonstrated that some aluminum oxide crystals have high sensitivity and are well suited for detecting and measuring ultraviolet radiation rates significantly less than 0.1 pW/cm2. The thermoluminescent glow curve, linearity of response, and fading of the crystals were determined. An action spectrum was performed to determine the relative sensitivities of several crystals in a range of wavelengths from 230 nm to 546 nm. The sensitivity of the crystals was found to decrease as a function of exposure. An explanation for the decrease in sensitivity due to the presence of high temperature traps is presented. This investigation has …

Piezomodulated And Specular Reflection Spectra Of A Polydiacetylene Crystal, Craig J. Eckhardt, H. Muller, J. Tylicki, R.R. Chance

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

A class of potential quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors is the monocrystalline polydiacetylenes. These polymers can be obtained as single crystals that have high structural perfection and a chain configuration that permits extensive π-electron delocalization. The poly-2, 4-hexadiyne-1, 6-diol-bis-(p-toluene sulfonate) (PTS) has been the most extensively studied system and interest centers upon the extent of delocalization along the two chains compromising the P21/c unit cell.

Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas Nov 1976

Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas

Dissertations and Theses

Chlorine is thought to play a major role in the mobilization and concentration of base metals in the formation of ore deposits. The regional distribution of chlorine in the Idaho Batholith was studied to see if this could be related to mineralization or metallic provinces. One hundred forty-eight whole-rock samples, mineral separates, and standards were analyzed for chlorine by x-ray fluorescence.

The expected concentration of chlorine in the biotite fraction was not found. The chlorine was not significantly water leachable from the whole rock samples following normal grinding. The Idaho Batholith as a source for mineralizing chlorine was not established. …

Protecting Ripening Sorghum With Methiocarb From Bird Damage In Senegal, Richard L. Bruggers Nov 1976

Protecting Ripening Sorghum With Methiocarb From Bird Damage In Senegal, Richard L. Bruggers

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The simultaneous completion of the rainy season and nesting of granivorous birds between October and November in the Sudano-sahelian region of Senegal often results in very extensive bird damage to cereal crops. This occurs from both increased bird populations, due to the presence of juveniles as well as from their accompanying change in diet from insects to seeds. The damage is caused by several species of birds, most notable the Red-billed Dioch (Quelea quelea) and the Village and Black-headed Weavers (Ploceus cuculiatus and Ploceus capitalis) . The Buffalo Weaver (Bubalornis albirostris) and the Glossy Starling Lamprotornis chalybaeus) also are at …

Experimental Use Of Av-Alarm For Repelling Quelea From Rice In Somalia, Larry C. Holcomb Nov 1976

Experimental Use Of Av-Alarm For Repelling Quelea From Rice In Somalia, Larry C. Holcomb

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The Av-Alarm is a device for producing loud intermittent sounds which are sometimes effective in repelling pest birds or mammals. (Av-Alarm is manufactured by Av-Alarm Corp, P.O. Box 2488, Santa Maria, California 93454.) The sound is intended to irritate or cause anxiety in animals, perhaps by interfering with normal sound communication sufficiently to repel them from the area. Boudreau(1972) and Stewart (1974) report factors relating to alarm stimuli in bird control. Stewart (1974), HcCracken (1972) and Palmer (1976) reported the use of Av-Alarm in repelling pests under several different situations. However, Jeffrey Jackson (pers. comm.) has reported the use of …

Tests Of Bird Damage Control Measures In Sudan, 1975, Lee R. Martin Nov 1976

Tests Of Bird Damage Control Measures In Sudan, 1975, Lee R. Martin

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The Red-billed Quelea (Quelga quelaa), because of its widespread destruction of grain crops throughout its range in Africa, is one of the most studied and written about granivorous bird species. Less publicized are more local bird pests in Africa which may be equally Important. The Village Weaver, (Ploceus cucullatus), for example, is a pest in many countries, while some other Ploecids with limited destructive habits create local problems. Significant crop losses also occur where there are large populations of Golden Sparrows (Passer luteus), House Sparrows (Passer domesticus), Red Bishops (Euplectes oryx), Doves (Streptopelia spp.), Glossy Starlings (Lamprotornis chalybaeus), Parakeets (Psittacula …

Species Composition, Food Habits, And The Economic And Ecologic Impact Of Winter Blackbird Flocks, Raleigh J. Robertson, Patrick J. Weatherhead, Frank J. S. Phelan, Geoffrey L. Holroyd, Nigel Lester

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Crop depredation by blackbirds (Icteridae) and Starlings (sturnus vulgaris) in North America has long prompted experimentation with control techniques. These efforts have been centered in the northeast and northcentral United States where concentrated cultivation of vulnerable crops coincides with the location where flocks of blackbirds congregate in the fall prior to their migration south (Stone, et al., 1972; Wiens and Dyer, 1975). In these areas the high cost and logistic impracticality of implementing widespread controls has suggested the need for modifying agricultural practices instead (Wiens and Dyer, 1975). More recently, attention has been focused farther south, particularly in Kentucky and …
