Botanical Pioneers Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Curtis Twedt, Carl Wolfe Aug 1976

Botanical Pioneers Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Curtis Twedt, Carl Wolfe

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The Nebraska Sandhills comprise an area of about 20,000 square miles, extending from about 980 30' to 1030 . Northern and southern boundaries are parallel with the Niobrara and Platte River valleys, respectively. The Sandhills merge with the Loess Hills physiographic region at the southeast, resulting in irregular interfaces of low dunes with clay bluffs and canyons of the latter region (Elder, 1969).

Biostratigraphy Of The Snowshoe Formation (Jurassic) In The Izee Area, Grant County, Oregon, Paul Lawrence Smith Aug 1976

Biostratigraphy Of The Snowshoe Formation (Jurassic) In The Izee Area, Grant County, Oregon, Paul Lawrence Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Using the standard Jurassic zonal scheme, this work attempts to determine the ages of the four members of the Snowshoe Formation that crop out in the Izee area. As a corollary, regional correlations are possible. The stratigraphic relationship between the Snowshoe Formation, the subjacent Hyde Formation and the superjacent Trowbridge Formation is also investigated.

Over one thousand fossils were collected from five stratigraphic sections and eight localities. The sections were measured using tape and compass techniques and the relative stratigraphic ranges of the fossils calculated using a computer program written specifically for this project. The ammonite fauna, dominated by the …

Supralinearity Of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters, Leif Larsson, Robert Katz Aug 1976

Supralinearity Of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters, Leif Larsson, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The supralinear response of thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) after irradiation with gamma- or beta-rays can be decomposed by use of the cumulative Poisson distribution into a sum of 1-or-more and 2-or-more hit components, suggesting the coexistence of both types of trap structures. Following the response of other 1-hit detectors, and of biological cells to energetic heavy ions, we expect and find that the supralinear response tends to disappear with alpha particle, and with neutron irradiation, and that the supralinear, or 2-hit, component tends to be more responsive to high LET (Linear Energy Transfer) radiations. Since the response of biological cells to …

The Quantum Defect Theory Approach, Anthony F. Starace Aug 1976

The Quantum Defect Theory Approach, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The Quantum Defect Theory (QDT) is a method of using the analytically known properties of excited electrons moving in a pure Coulomb field to describe atomic photoabsorption and electron-ion scattering processes in terms of a few parameters. These parameters may be determined either from experimental data or from ab initio theoretical calculations. In addition, they are usually nearly independent of energy in the threshold energy region (i.e., within a few eV of the atomic ionization threshold). Thus the determination of these parameters at any single energy suffices to predict the variation with energy of numerous atomic properties in the threshold …

K₁ Of The Compact Operators Is Zero, L. G. Brown, Claude Schochet Aug 1976

K₁ Of The Compact Operators Is Zero, L. G. Brown, Claude Schochet

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

We prove that K₁ of the compact operators is zero. This theorem has the following operator-theoretic formulation: any invertible operator of the form (identity) + (compact) is the product of (at most eight) multiplicative commutators (AjBjAj⁻¹Bj⁻¹)±1, where each Bj is of the form (identity) + (compact). The proof uses results of L. G. Brown, R. G. Douglas, and P. A. Fillmore on essentially normal operators and a theorem of A. Brown and C. Pearcy on multiplicative …

An Fe (Iii) - Initiated Oxidase Reaction With Ferroxidase-Ii, Glenn Alexander Hegamyer Aug 1976

An Fe (Iii) - Initiated Oxidase Reaction With Ferroxidase-Ii, Glenn Alexander Hegamyer

Master's Theses

A reaction involving iron as an intermediary electron carrier for the coupling of electron transfer from an endogenous substrate to ferroxidase-I has been proposed.

The enzymic nature of the reacti on has been established and studies with iron chelating agents have demonstrated the involvement of Fe(III). The kinetic parameters of ferroxidase-11 with Fe (lll) were found to be quite similar to those previously established for Fe(Il). The participation by the copper associated with ferroxi dase-11 was ascertained by use of the copper chelating agent, diethyl -di thio-carbamate .

A variety of substances normally found in blood were surveyed as possible …

Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To The N=2, 3, And 4 States By 15-200-Kev Protons, John T. Park, Judith E. Aldag, Jacob M. George, Jerry Peacher Aug 1976

Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To The N=2, 3, And 4 States By 15-200-Kev Protons, John T. Park, Judith E. Aldag, Jacob M. George, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cross sections for the processes H++H(1 s)H++H*(n = 2, 3, 4) have been extracted from the energy-loss spectra of 15- to 200-keV protons by using a spectrum-fitting technique. Absolute cross sections have been obtained by normalization of the spectra to the theoretical cross section through the use of the Born approximation at 200 keV. The cross-section curves are very similar in shape with maxima at 60 keV. The results have been compared with available theoretical calculations. The n = 2 and n = 3 cross-section measurements are in very good agreement in curve shape with Glauber-approximation …

Legal Institutions For The Allocation Of Water And Their Impact On Coal Conversion Operations In Kentucky, Richard C. Ausness, Gary W. Callahan, Steven W. Dills, Bill H. Flynn, John S. Gillig

KWRRI Research Reports

The conversion of coal into other types of fuel through gasification and liquefaction has been proposed as a means of coping with America's increasing energy needs. Coal conversion plants require large quantities of water for cooling purposes and for use as a raw material.

There are three types of water allocation presently used in the United States, riparianism, prior appropriation, and administrative permit systems. The common law riparian system is undesirable because under it water rights are insecure and subject to locational use restrictions. Prior appropriation is better, but the permanent water right created under this system results in excessive …

Improving Design Criteria For Septic Tank Systems, Dee Mitchell Aug 1976

Improving Design Criteria For Septic Tank Systems, Dee Mitchell

Technical Reports

The failure of septic tanks in treatment of wastewater has been responsible for causing health hazards due to contamination and pollution of groundwater and surface waters used for drinking water supplies. Most of these failures have been in the absorption field. Little or no actual research has been performed to establish design criteria for septic tank absorption fields to be used by local, state or federal Health Agencies or Pollution Control Agencies. Historically, almost all design criteria has beed based on a percolation test and the number of bedrooms to be served. Both of these methods have repeatedly been shown …

Statistical Models For Precipitation, Z. Govindarajulu, Peter Purdue, Frank Cioch Aug 1976

Statistical Models For Precipitation, Z. Govindarajulu, Peter Purdue, Frank Cioch

KWRRI Research Reports

The available data consists of daily rainfall for the past 24 years (1948-1972) for Lexington, Louisville and Paducah. However, for Ashland, the data is available for the period of 40 years (1932-1972). The problem is to find an appropriate family of distributions indexed by a suitable number of parameters that fits the maximum daily rainfall. Further, there might be seasonal variations. The following seasons were considered: (i) Dry Convective season: August 1-0ctober 30; (ii) Early Convective season: May 1-July 31; (iii) Late Convective season: November 1- April 30. After extracting the yearly maximums for each of these seasons (see Appendix …

The Intermolecular Potential And Vibrational Relaxation Of The Ar-Co System, Gregory Allen Parker Aug 1976

The Intermolecular Potential And Vibrational Relaxation Of The Ar-Co System, Gregory Allen Parker

Theses and Dissertations

The angle, distance and vibration dependence of the Ar-CO intermolecular potential is calculated using the electron gas model to obtain the short range interaction which is smoothly joined onto the long range van der Waals tail which is obtained from accurate C_6, C_7, and C_8 coefficients. Our calculated second interaction virial coefficients are compared with experiment and with a simple adjustment of the Ar-CO potential an excellent agreement is obtained. Our spherically averaged potential is also in excellent agreement with a spherical potential inferred from high energy scattering data. Simplified expressions for the scattering amplitude and differential cross section are …

Cone-Valued Lyapunov Functions, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham Aug 1976

Cone-Valued Lyapunov Functions, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

It is very well known that employing a single Lyapunov function and the theory of scalar differential inequality offers a useful mechanism to study a variety of qualitative problems of differential equations in a unified way [10]. Nevertheless, when using this powerful technique for concrete problems, the main difficulty we face is the lack of general method of constructing a Lyapunov function. This naturally beads to the development of the method of vector Lyapunov functions which utilizes several Lyapunov-like functions and the theory of vector differential inequalities in a fruitful manner [5,8-12]. This method offers a more flexible mechanism to …

A Monotone Method For Infinite System Of Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, V. Lakshmikantham, Jagdish Chandra, S. Leela Aug 1976

A Monotone Method For Infinite System Of Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, V. Lakshmikantham, Jagdish Chandra, S. Leela

Mathematics Technical Papers

Monotone iterative methods have been successfully used to generate improvable two-sided point-wise bounds on solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations. While such procedures take a simple form when the nonlinearities are independent of gradient terms [6,9], the extension of such techniques to fully nonlinear problems has been quite formidable. In the case of scalar ordinary differential equations of the type (1.1) [see PDF for equation] such results have been obtained making use of either a linear maximum principle (3,1] or a nonlinear maximum principle [4]. In either case an essential use is made …

Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg Aug 1976

Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg

Faculty Publications

Two free radicals formed when single crystals of potassium hydroxylamine disulfonate are irradiated with gamma rays at 77degrees K were studied by ESR. The ESR spectra result from a predominant center (radical A) exhibiting large 14N and 1H hyperfine splittings and from lesser amounts of Fremy's radical [O-dotN(SO3)2-2]. The g and hyperfine tensors of these radicals have been evaluated and are discussed. Radical A, whose identity remains in doubt, may be regarded as the precursor to Fremy's radical; on warming its lines decay and those of Fremy's radical are formed. Lines from radical A decrease in strength and those of …
