Extraction Rate Study Of Ni(Iii) Oxinate & Separation Of Cu(Ii) & Ni(Ii) With Oxide Based On Differences In Rates Of Extraction, Somchai Taichilassunthorn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study was conducted with metal ion concentrations in the range of parts per million and used batch extraction techniques to study the non-equilibrium extraction of Cu(II) and Ni(II) oxinates. Contrary to other authors, atomic absorption was used exclusively for the analysis of phases.

The two main areas of investigation in this study were:

  1. Kinetics study of extraction of Ni(II) oxinate.
  2. Separation of Cu(II) and Ni(II) with oxine based on differences in rates of extraction.

It was the purpose of this work to study the extraction of Cu(II) and Ni(II) with oxine in chloroform. This particular pair of elements was …

Electrical Conductivity Of Thin Lecithin-Cholesterol Membranes Due To 2,4-D, 2,4-Db, 2,4,5-T And 2,4-Dcp, Malkanthi Paulis Jul 1976

Electrical Conductivity Of Thin Lecithin-Cholesterol Membranes Due To 2,4-D, 2,4-Db, 2,4,5-T And 2,4-Dcp, Malkanthi Paulis

Dissertations and Theses

The effect of the following pesticides on DC electrical conductivity of lecithin-cholesterol membranes has been studied: endothall, paraquat, diquat, 2,4-D, 2,4-DB, 2,4,5-T, 2,4-DCP. It has been found that the ions of endothall, paraquat and diquat are essentially membrane impermeable and that they do not bind to the membrane surface. In contrast, 2,4-D, 2,4-DB, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-DCP induce electrical conductivity in lecithincholesterol membranes and in addition they also cause an increase in the nonactin-K+ membrane conductivity.

The compounds 2,4-D, 2,4-DB, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-DCP basically behave as class II uncouplers. The kinetic scheme of charge transfer across the membrane, based on …

Stratigraphy, Structure, And Petrology Of The Snoqualmie Pass Area, Washington, Lawrence A. Chitwood Jul 1976

Stratigraphy, Structure, And Petrology Of The Snoqualmie Pass Area, Washington, Lawrence A. Chitwood

Dissertations and Theses

The Snoqualmie pass area lies about 50 mi (80 km) east of Seattle, Washington, along the crest of the Cascade Range. Five stratified units, forming a composite section over 22,000 ft (6700 m) thick, are recognized in the area. They were deformed and later intruded by granodiorite and quartz monzonite porphyry of the Snoqualmie batholith (middle Miocene). The oldest unit, the Denny Formation (Permian), 7000 ft (2100 m) thick, consists of interstratified basalt, andesite and dacite volcanic rocks and limestone and chert beds. This formation is unconformably overlain by a thick conformable sequence of early Tertiary strata which are subdivided, …

An Abstract Matrix Model: The Column Model, Tomas Eufracio Salazar Jul 1976

An Abstract Matrix Model: The Column Model, Tomas Eufracio Salazar

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this dissertation we introduce an abstract model for matrix theory, The Column Model. We investigate some properties of the special class of partially ordered linear algebras that satisfy the conditions of the Model. We use the order structure of the Model to obtain some results on: idempotents in the Model, nonnegative elements of the Model having nonnegative generalized inverses, factor theorems in the Model and concepts in the Model that are related to the usual notion of eigenvalues of an m-by-m matrix. Since the set of m-by-m matrices belongs to the special class of partially ordered linear algebras satisfying …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria In Systems Of (I) Para-Xylene, (Ii) Mesitylene, And (Iii) N,N-Dimethylformamide ; Excess Volume Determination In Systems Containing Cyclohexane ; Calculations Of Activities For The N-Hexane + Cyclohexane System, John F. Moellmer

Theses and Dissertations

Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compolllld formation in solutions of (i) para-xylene, (ii) mesitylene, and (iii) N,N-dimethyl-formamide (DMF) with mono- and di- halobenzenes that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of p-C_6H_4F_2 with mesitylene, p-C_6H_4Br_2 with p-xylene, and p-C_6H_4Cl_2 with p-xylene. The results suggest that compound formation occurs because of favorable geometry rather than a charge transfer process. A vibrating tube densimeter was used to determine, with high precision, the densities and subsequently excess volumes of mixing of the n-hexane plus cyclohexane system. Temperature …

Frequency-Mixing Detection (Fmd) Of Polarization-Modulated Light, R. M.A. Azzam Jul 1976

Frequency-Mixing Detection (Fmd) Of Polarization-Modulated Light, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

When a light beam whose polarization and intensity are weakly modulated at a frequency ωm passes through a periodic analyzer of frequency ωa(<ωm) and the transmitted flux is linearly detected, the resulting total signal St consists of two components: (i) a periodic baseband signal Sbb with harmonics of frequencies nωa (n = 0,1,2,…) and (ii) an amplitude-modulated-carrier signal δSmc with center (carrier) frequency ωm and sideband frequencies at ωm ± nωa(n = 1,2,…). In this paper we show that the average polarization of the beam is determined …

Systematic Evaluation Of Cellular Radiosensitivity Parameters, R. A. Roth, S. C. Sharma, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Cellular radiosensitivity parameters of the track structure theory of Katz and co-workers are evaluated from a sum of squares minimizing computer program for nonlinear models. Based on these observations, suggestions are presented for efficient experiment design for the determination of these parameters from track-segment bombardments of high LET radiations.

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Electron Ejection Cross Sections In Helium By Proton Impact From 5 To 100 Kev, M. Eugene Rudd, Don H. Madison Jul 1976

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Electron Ejection Cross Sections In Helium By Proton Impact From 5 To 100 Kev, M. Eugene Rudd, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Absolute values of doubly differential cross sections are obtained for electron production in helium by 5- to 100-keV proton impact. The measured values along with earlier data at higher energies are compared with theoretical plane-wave Born-approximation functions obtained from a Hartree-Fock potential. Not only is good agreement obtained at high impact energies (above 300 keV), but fairly good agreement is found at low energies (below about 20 keV). For electrons ejected in the backward hemisphere, unexpectedly poor agreement is noted at intermediate energies where the measured cross sections dip to 50% of the calculated values in some cases. Singly differential …

Final Report - Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon Jul 1976

Final Report - Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon

Publications (WR)

The Lake Mead monitoring program has developed a substantial body of information on the physical, chemical and biological limnology of Lake Mead since 1972. This report summarizes pertinent aspects of that data, with emphasis on studies completed in 1975 -76. It is our continuing hope that the data developed by us will be useful to an ever broader group of users of the water resource represented by Lake Mead. We have been privileged to see our data have a significant influence in some very important water resource decisions over the past four years. There is every reason to expect that …

A Prototype Lagrangian Current Buoy Using The Carrier Plus Sideband (Csb) Retransmission Of Omega Navigation Symbols, Donald L. Baker, Christian S. Welch

Reports

As part of the continental shelf investigations of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) , electronics were developed and tested to track an ocean-current-following (Lagrangian) buoy by the retransmission of Omega navigation signals to a shore station using medium frequency (2 . 398 MHz) ground wave propagation and equal-carrier-upper-sideband modulation . The buoy electronics include sharp clipping and filtering for noise reduction and Omega signal equalization . The carrier and upper sideband are transmitted with equal power to maintain the relative phases of separate Omega station signals on demodulation. The base station is a 2.4 MHz receiver/demodulator feeding a …

A Correlation Study Of Atmospheric Conditions & Incidences Of Respiratory Deaths, Bernice Wilder

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mortality data from two populations, Bowling Green and Lexington, Kentucky, were correlated with atmospheric conditions for this region. The mortality data included the cause of death by respiratory disease, age, sex and race. The respiratory diseases considered in this study were emphysema, tuberculosis, pneumonia, asthma, influenza, acute and chronic bronchitis. The atmospheric conditions considered t have an effect on health were temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity and precipitation. Mean temperature, mean barometric pressure, and mean precipitation per month were correlated with the death rate per thousand but proved no significance at the .05 level in either study area. IN the …

Numerical Simulation Of Thermohaline Convection In The Mixed Layer Of The Ocean, Victor Eli Delnore Jul 1976

Numerical Simulation Of Thermohaline Convection In The Mixed Layer Of The Ocean, Victor Eli Delnore

OES Theses and Dissertations

The intradiumal heating and cooling cycle of the mixed layer of a tropical ocean is investigated through the use of a pseudo-two-dimensional numerical model. Particular emphasis is given to two-component diffusion resulting from dynamic instabilities in the water column. The conservation equations for salt and heat include the effects of solar heating, horizontal advectlon, and turbulent fluxes at the sea surface, while wind mixing enter through the use of depth-dependent eddy diffusion coefficients resulting from the wave-orbital shear model of KitaigorodsldLy. All inputs are treated as functions of time-of-day, or calculated via the bulk aerodynamic method.

The entrainment fluxes of …

Stability And Local Effects Of An Offshore Sand Storage Mound, Dam Neck Disposal Site, Virginia Inner Continental Shelf, William Joslyn Saumsiegle Jul 1976

Stability And Local Effects Of An Offshore Sand Storage Mound, Dam Neck Disposal Site, Virginia Inner Continental Shelf, William Joslyn Saumsiegle

OES Theses and Dissertations

From 1967 to 1974 medium to coarse sand dredged from the Chesapeake Bay was stockpiled approximately three miles offshore of Dam Neck, Virginia in hopes that the sand could be recovered for local beach renourishment projects. The resulting mound was surveyed over a two year period to determine if the sand is being removed by wave and current action and if the creation of a new feature on the ocean bottom changes the wave refraction patterns and perhaps creates local erosion.

Bathymetric profiles across the storage mound show some apparent morphological changes, but a detailed analysis of this data is …

The Effect Of 4-Chlororesorcinol On The Growth Potential Of Dunaliella Tertiolecta Butcher (Dun Clone), John Anthony Chigges Jul 1976

The Effect Of 4-Chlororesorcinol On The Growth Potential Of Dunaliella Tertiolecta Butcher (Dun Clone), John Anthony Chigges

OES Theses and Dissertations

Jolley (1973) identified and quantified 4-chlororesorcinol at the 1.2 μg/1 level in secondary treated sewage effluent as one of 17 stable organochlorine compounds. The present report presents the first data on the effect of 4-chlororesorcinol on the growth potential of the marine phytoplankter, Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher (Dun clone).

The assay method used herein was that of the Marine Algal Assay Procedure: Bottle Test (EPA, 1974). An algal culture chamber was constructed capable of providing controlled temperature (18 ± 2°C) and light (400-500 ft-c) conditions. Four parameters were used to describe the growth response of D. tertiolecta including maximum specific growth …

Topography, Shallow Structure, And Sedimentary Processes Of The Atlantic Continental Slope Off The Carolina Coast, Robert Michael Fitchko Jul 1976

Topography, Shallow Structure, And Sedimentary Processes Of The Atlantic Continental Slope Off The Carolina Coast, Robert Michael Fitchko

OES Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of 58 closely-spaced bathymetric and seismic profiles of the Carolina continental slope from the northern Blake Plateau to the vicinity of the North Carolina-Virginia state line (latitude 32• 30 'N to 36• 30 'N) indicates sharp contrasts in quantity of slumping and outcrop ledge continuity.

Terrestrial progradation and a relatively gentle slope characterize the area south of Cape Lookout, especially between Cape Romain and Cape Fear where sediment mantling is the greatest. Submarine canyons, slumps, and a steep slope are characteristic Between Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras. North of Cape Hatteras, canyons and slumps are also common, though sediment …
