Ozone Complexes With Substituted Aromatic Compounds, David C. Eaton Jun 1976

Ozone Complexes With Substituted Aromatic Compounds, David C. Eaton

Honors Theses

Ozone has been observed to complex with aromatic compounds at low temperatures. The ability of an aromatic system to complex with ozone appears to be due to the inductive effect of the substituent on the pi system. The experimental work was done in the solid phase at temperatures of -175° C to -186° C. Under these conditions all the substituted aromatics with electron withdrawing groups did not complex including benzene. The complexes are highly colored. To insure the reversibility of the pi complex, infrared spectra were taken of some of the aromatic species before and after complexing.

A Facile One Step Synthesis Of Some New 2-Hydroxy-4,6-Bis Aryl S-Triazines And Related Compounds, Howard Steven Grossberg Jun 1976

A Facile One Step Synthesis Of Some New 2-Hydroxy-4,6-Bis Aryl S-Triazines And Related Compounds, Howard Steven Grossberg

Honors Theses

In the past few years the symmetrical triazines have developed extreme importance in biochemical research as well as importance in industrial applications. In our research we have developed a facile, one-step synthesis of a number of 2-hydroxy-4, 6-bis aryl symmetrical triazines based upon the addition of the anion of urea and an aromatic nitrile, with the aryl group including a number of halogenated benzenes, pyridine, or benzene itself. The structure of these compounds had been proved by microanalysis and by both infra-red and mass spectroscopy. The further versatility of the synthesis has also been explored, and by replacing the urea …

The Preparation And Kinetic Studies Of Two Sterically Hindered Gold (Iii) Complexes, James Forrest Stevens Jun 1976

The Preparation And Kinetic Studies Of Two Sterically Hindered Gold (Iii) Complexes, James Forrest Stevens

Honors Theses

Previous studies indicate substitution of bromide ion for chloride ion in [Au(Et4dien~H)c.i] +occurs at a rate almost independent of the bromide ion concentration, while similar reactions with [Au(dien-H)Cl]+, [Au(Me2dien-H)c!]+ and [Au(Me4dien-H)c~+ show rates dependent on bromide ion concentration as usually encountered for square planar complexes. There is retardation of the reaction by steric and electronic effects with increased N-alkyl substitution of the triamine. It has also been postulated that substitution of [Au(Et2dien-H)cJ]+ proceeds via a ring-opening mechanism. The purpose of this research was to study further the effect of steric hindrance on rates of substitution of two additional gold(III) complexes. …

Observation Of Vibrationally Excited Nitrogen With A Simplified Electron Transmission Apparatus, J.A. Michejda, Paul Burrow Jun 1976

Observation Of Vibrationally Excited Nitrogen With A Simplified Electron Transmission Apparatus, J.A. Michejda, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

A simple electron transmission apparatus is used to observe vibrationally excited N2 in the first two vibrational levels. The method is based on the pronounced peaks appearing in the total electron scattering cross section in the range of energy 2–4 eV. Because of the wide spacing between these peaks, good energy resolution is not required and measurements can be performed without an electron monochromator.

Generalized Stability Of Motion And Vector Lyapunov Functions, Deborah A. Pace, Roger W. Mitchell Jun 1976

Generalized Stability Of Motion And Vector Lyapunov Functions, Deborah A. Pace, Roger W. Mitchell

Mathematics Technical Papers

The direct theory for stability of motion in terms of vector Lyapunov functions and the general comparison method is well-developed [4, 5, 6, 7] and effectively applied for large scale dynamical systems [1, 3]. However, the problem of constructing vector Lyapunov functions and developing appropriate perturbation theory has seen very little progress. Perhaps one of the reasons for this situation is that the stability definitions by means of the standard norm are not flexible enough for such a venture.

Innovative Wind Machines, Executive Summary And Final Report, United States, Energy Research And Development Administration, Division Of Solar Energy Jun 1976

Innovative Wind Machines, Executive Summary And Final Report, United States, Energy Research And Development Administration, Division Of Solar Energy

Fuel Sources

The work reported herein was supported by the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration through the National Science Foundation, and represents an initial evaluation of two innovative wind machines. The first is a vortex concentrator, which is a vertical wing placed in the natural wind in a way that a strong wing tip vortex occurs; a turbine is then placed behind the wing tip in the concentrated energy region of the vortex to convert the energy to more directly-useful forms. The second concept involves a vertical axis turbine with straight blades; the blades are composed of special circulation controlled airfoils …

Effect Of Solvent Polarity On The Singlet-Triplet Energy Gap Of Methyl-2-Anthroate, William Gregg Hawkins Jun 1976

Effect Of Solvent Polarity On The Singlet-Triplet Energy Gap Of Methyl-2-Anthroate, William Gregg Hawkins

Honors Theses

Nonradiative processes cause the fluorescence quantum yield to be less than one. Elucidation of nonradiative decay mechanisms without knowing the location of triplet states is difficult. Determination of the fluorescence quantum yield (Øf) as a function of temperature can provide valuable information about relative location of triplet states and the nonradiative processes which result from having a triplet near the energy of the first excited singlet state. Methyl-2-anthroate is very sensitive to solvent polarity. The Øf values and S1 energies vary greatly, depending on the solvent environment. Temperature studies on Øf have indicated the intersystem crossing (ISC) to a nearby …

Optimum Structural Probability Bounds For The Right-Tail Of The Paretian Law, Danny D. Dyer Jun 1976

Optimum Structural Probability Bounds For The Right-Tail Of The Paretian Law, Danny D. Dyer

Mathematics Technical Papers

The two-parameter Pareto density function [see PDF for equation] is widely used in applied statistics. For example, in reliability theory (1.1) represents the failure-time distribution of a "work-hardened" component whose.hazard function is inversely proportional to time. Because of its long right-tail, (1.1) is often a probability model for certain socioeconomic phenomena (e.g., distribution of city population sizes, distribution of personal incomes which exceed tax-exempt levels). One of the more recent characterizations of the Pareto distribution is due to Revankar, et. at. [15]. They show that within the population of individuals that under-report their income for income tax purposes, the average …

Evaluation Of A Precision Filing Test For Predicting Dental Technic Performance, Douglass Roberts Jun 1976

Evaluation Of A Precision Filing Test For Predicting Dental Technic Performance, Douglass Roberts

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A precision filing test involving the reduction of a steel cylinder to a perfect cube with the use of a hand file and bench vise was devised as a diagnostic tool for the early detection of freshman students having technic difficulties. The test was administered to 188 freshman dental students in three classes at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry. Subjective and objective scores were then statistically compared with subsequent technic and clinic grades of the students. The simple linear correlations between the predictor test variable and criterion grades were statistically significant for one class and for the combined classes …

The Effect Of Pre-Admission Crisis Nursing Intervention On The Anxiety Level Of Elderly Persons On Admission To A Nursing Home, Doreen C. K. Lee Jun 1976

The Effect Of Pre-Admission Crisis Nursing Intervention On The Anxiety Level Of Elderly Persons On Admission To A Nursing Home, Doreen C. K. Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The experimental study attempted to determine whether pre-admission crisis nursing intervention had any effect on the level of anxiety of elderly people when they were transferred from an acute hospital to a nursing home.

The literature review related to trends in numbers of nursing homes and in the increase in longevity. Several articles indicated that the aged, as a group, lacked power to alter their situations. The need for patients to express their feelings and participate in their own decisions was stressed in various studies. Other theories discussed theoretical aspects and goals of crisis intervention. Several articles suggested that crisis …

The Effect Of Planned Physical Activities On Deficient Motor Skills In Head Start Preschool Children, Darlene L. Robinson Jun 1976

The Effect Of Planned Physical Activities On Deficient Motor Skills In Head Start Preschool Children, Darlene L. Robinson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

During the past few years many physicians, nurses, psychologists, teachers, and physical educators have begun to place more emphasis upon the developmental problems of children. As an outgrowth of this, more attention has been given the child showing mild to moderate motor problems. As a result of these more subtle difficulties going unrecognized and untreated, children may suffer from learning disorders, lack of acceptance by teachers and peers, maladaptive behavior and feelings of low self-esteem (Cratty, 1970; Kiphard, -1970; and Ferinden, 1972).

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether planned physical activities would aid in remediation and/or modification …

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene And Its Derivatives, Mohammad Z. Kassaee Jun 1976

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene And Its Derivatives, Mohammad Z. Kassaee

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

o-CH3, o-CH3O, m-CH3O and p-CF3-β-methyl- β-nitrostyrene (compounds not previously reported) were synthesized using the method of Lappin13 and Robertson.14 These styrenes were irradiated in the U.V. region. The yield of corresponding oximes varied from 85 to 100% in aqueous ethanol. This variation in yield of the oximes was attributed to the effect of the substituent on the phenyl rings of the corresponding styrenes. Electron donating substituents promoted the nitro-nitrite rearrangement and electron-withdrawing groups inhibited this rearrangement. A mechanism is proposed for this reaction which unifies and includes ideas proposed by …

The Lower Reaches Of Long Creek, Kentucky: A Karst Anomaly In Allen County, Doral Conner Jun 1976

The Lower Reaches Of Long Creek, Kentucky: A Karst Anomaly In Allen County, Doral Conner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A field study of the lower reaches of the Long Creek drainage area in southeastern Allen County, Kentucky, established the karst character of that area. The area heretofore had been described as a non-karst area. Four swallow holes, which individually or collectively totally pirate Long Creek, were identified. Two major resurgences of the pirated flow were located and described. A detailed study of a portion of the Long Creek drainage area revealed thirty-four springs, all of which were pirated at least once, and no flow from these springs reached Long Creek by surficial routes. The field survey also revealed dolines …

An Energy Accounting Evaluation Of Several Alternatives For Hydropower And Geothermal Development, J. Clair Batty, J. Paul Riley, William J. Grenney, David A. Bell Jun 1976

An Energy Accounting Evaluation Of Several Alternatives For Hydropower And Geothermal Development, J. Clair Batty, J. Paul Riley, William J. Grenney, David A. Bell

Reports

Alternative management strategies for hydropower and geothermal development are myriad. This study does not attempt to evaluate or even summarize the many schemes which are possible. In an era of plentiful natural resources, economic analysis procedures for selecting a particular alternative have been developed which traditionally have tended to optimize on the basis of capital and labor. The approach taken in this study is based on the notion of optimum deployment of finite resources. A legitimate question which this study has attempted to address is: Does the construction of large water management facilities, such as hydropower dams, which involve huge …

Reply To “Comments On ‘Theoretical Study Of Impurity-Induced First-Order Raman Spectra For The Alkali Halides’”, John R. Hardy, Arnold Karo

John R. Hardy Papers

This is a reply to the preceding comment by Page on the relative merits of the breathing-shell and deformation-dipole models for predicting defect-activated first-order Raman spectra. We show that when both models are parametrized in the same fashion the agreement between theory and experiment is comparable.

Metamagnetism In Single Crystal Γ-Co(Pyridine)2Cl2, S. Foner, Richard B. Frankel, W. M. Reiff, H. Wong, Gary J. Long May 1976

Metamagnetism In Single Crystal Γ-Co(Pyridine)2Cl2, S. Foner, Richard B. Frankel, W. M. Reiff, H. Wong, Gary J. Long

Physics

Small (≤1 mg) single crystals of γ-Co(pyr)2Cl2 have been grown and measurements of magnetic moment vs applied field H and temperature have been made for 0≤H≤54 kG and 1.25 K≤T≤4.2 K. At 1.25 K, metamagnetic transitions are observed along the a-axis at ~700 G; along the b-axis at both ~800 and ~1500 G; and along the c-axis at ~4 kG. The low field susceptibilities show a maximum at T≃3.4 K for each orientation. Magnetic saturation is not achieved at 54 kG; about 2.5 µB is achieved along the a*- or b-axes, whereas a lower moment is …

Hyperfine Interactions In Antiferromagnetic Eute Using The Te-125 Mossbauer Resonance, N. A. Blum, Richard B. Frankel May 1976

Hyperfine Interactions In Antiferromagnetic Eute Using The Te-125 Mossbauer Resonance, N. A. Blum, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

Europium telluride crystallizes in the NaCl structure and is antiferromagnetic with a Néel temperature TN of 9.6 K. We have used the 35.5 keV Møssbauer transition in Te-125 to examine the nature of the spontaneous magnetic moment which has been observed in conducting samples below TN. At 80 K the Mössbauer resonance spectrum consisted of a single absorption line comparable in width with the spectrum of nonmagnetic cubic ZnTe, indicating the absence of a significant quadrupole splitting at this temperature. At 4.2 K the line-width increased by a factor of 1.5, which is equivalent to a single magnetic hyperfine field …
