A Hydroclimatic Study Of The Narragansett Bay Drainage Basin: The Effects Of Climate And Urban Land Use On Runoff, Paul J. Jaillet Jan 1976

A Hydroclimatic Study Of The Narragansett Bay Drainage Basin: The Effects Of Climate And Urban Land Use On Runoff, Paul J. Jaillet

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This study analyzes the relationship between the climate of the Narragansett Bay Drainage Basin and the increasing urban land use into a relative increase in runoff in the Basin streams. Data for thirty-five years were collected to discern the trends in runoff within the Basin. It was hypothesized that runoff is increasing in relation to an increase in urban acreage. Runoff data were analyzed in two forms. The Thornthwaite water budget was used to estimate runoff. For this, Basin temperature and precipitation records were necessary inputs. The estimated runoff was plotted against observed runoff by double-mass analysis. Deviations from the …

The Future Of Hard Minerals Mining On The New England Continental Margin, James D. Eger

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

As man's needs for all commodities increase with the rapid worldwide increase in technological development, new sources for these commodities must be sought. In the United States, shortages of many materials are already being experienced, and the health of our economy is dependent on the continued supply of these vital materials. In order to supply our needs for minerals, intensified and improved exploration methods, improved technology allowing utilization of lower grade ores, synthetics and substitutes, government sponsored research programs, and new exploitable areas all must be developed. This study will look at the current situation affecting hard minerals mining on …

Synthesis Of Tcne And Tcnq Derivatives And The Preparation Of Conducting Polymers, Michael L. Runge Jan 1976

Synthesis Of Tcne And Tcnq Derivatives And The Preparation Of Conducting Polymers, Michael L. Runge

Theses and Dissertations

Tetracyanoethylene and tetracyanoquinodimethane were reacted with various N,N-dimethyl-a, w-alkyldiamines to produce TCNE and TCNQ diamino and monoamino derivatives. NMR and ir spectra of the monoamino derivatives, 1-(N,N-dimethyl-a,w-alkyldiamino)-1,2,2-tricyanoethylenes and 7-(N,N-dimethyl-a,w-alkyldiamino)-7,8,8-tricyanoquinodimethans, indicated that these compounds exhibited strong nitrogen-hydrogen-nitrogen intramolecular hydrogen bonding. This phenomenon was corroborated by molecular weight and preliminary x-ray analyses.

The 1,1-bis(N,N-dimethyl-a,w-alkyldiamino)-2,2-dicyanoethylene and 7,7-bis(N,N-dimethyl-a,m-alkyldiamino)-8,8-dicyanoquinodimethan derivatives were polymerized with a,m-alkyldibromides containing two to six methylene groups to produce the corresponding ionene polymers. Viscosity measurements of the polymers indicated that the TCNE copolymers were generally of higher molecular weight than the corresponding TCNQ copolymers.

The two polymer series were treated with lithium …

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Dredging Within The Arkansas River Navigation System, Volume Iii-The Effects Upon The Zooplankton Associations, Edgar D. Short, Eugene H. Schmitz Jan 1976

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Dredging Within The Arkansas River Navigation System, Volume Iii-The Effects Upon The Zooplankton Associations, Edgar D. Short, Eugene H. Schmitz

Technical Reports

The primary purpose of the zooplankton phase of the coordinated study was to attempt to evaluate the effects of dredging operations on the abundance, distribution, composition and complexity of the zooplankton communities within the aquatic system of the Arkansas River. The other phases of investigation include fish, macroinvertebrates, phytoplankton and some physico-chemical parameters. The lack of baseline data, needed for measurement of previous ecological conditions from which to detect past and future changes, proved to be a major impediment to any evaluation. Although the study involved only about 240 miles of the river in Arkansas, it should serve as an …

. A 2-year study (1974-1975) of a resident Canada goose (Branta canadensis maxima) flock is reported. Twenty-four percent of the artificial nest structures (ANS) available were used by nesting geese. Artificial nesting structures, islands, muskrat houses and peninsulas were used by geese as nesting sites. Mean clutch size of completed nests was 5.14 in 1974 and 5.26 in 1975. Mean clutch size was 5.38 on ANS and 4.89 on NNS for the 2-year study. At least one egg hatched in 87 percent of the 283 nests located during the study. Larger clutches had a higher hatchability. Nest success was greater …

Factors Influencing Habitat Use By Breeding Waterfowl In South Dakota, Michael R. Mcenroe Jan 1976

Factors Influencing Habitat Use By Breeding Waterfowl In South Dakota, Michael R. Mcenroe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wetland characteristics, adjacent upland conditions, and corresponding waterfowl populations were surveyed on 500 quarter sections in 125 clusters proportionally stratified within eight physiographic strata in South Dakota. Two survey were conducted, one in May and a second in June, each year during 1973 and 1974. Habitat variables of each wetland and of each quarter section, respectively, were analyzed for each species of waterfowl through multiple regression analysis. Multiple regression equations had highest coefficients of determination for mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), pintails (Anas acuta), blue-winged teal (Anas discors), and gadwall (Anas strepera). Coefficient of determination for these species were greatest in the …

Laboratory Apparatus For Providing Diel Temperature Regimes For Aquatic Animals, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, G. Davis Jan 1976

Laboratory Apparatus For Providing Diel Temperature Regimes For Aquatic Animals, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, G. Davis

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

In studies of the effects of elevated temperature on aquatic organisms, little emphasis has been placed on modeling the fluctuating temperatures to which organisms are exposed in nature. To some extent this may be related to problems of design and maintenance of apparatus for fluctuating temperature control. The complexity of apparatus used to provide cycled temperatures has ranged from manually controlled valves for introducing water of different temperatures into aquariums (Kelso 1972), to a complex and expensive feedback system, regulated by rotating cams, that controls the temperature of influent water (Honeywell Cam Programmer Thermometers, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania). To facilitate studies …

Capability Of Integer Programming Algorithms In Solving Water Resource Planning Problems, Trevor C. Hughes, William J. Grenney, A. Bruce Bishop, Calvin G. Clyde, Rangesan Narayanan, Paul E. Pugner

Reports

The feasibility of optimizing large regional water resource planning problems by means of integer programming algorithms is analyzed. Two types of integer programming models are developed: (1) A water supply model including 23 separate but geographically related community systems; and (2) a river basin water quality model including 15 point sources of wastewater, 4 types of pollutants, 6 surveillance points, and 7 alternative treatment processes. The water supply model was structured as a mixed integer problem (some continuous variables included) while the water quality model was an all integer problem. Four integer programming algorithms were tested on the sample problems …

Impurity-Concentration Profile For An Exponentially Decaying Diffusion Coefficient In Irradiation Enhanced Diffusion, J Kowall, David Peak, J W. Corbett Jan 1976

Impurity-Concentration Profile For An Exponentially Decaying Diffusion Coefficient In Irradiation Enhanced Diffusion, J Kowall, David Peak, J W. Corbett

All Physics Faculty Publications

The diffusion equation is solved for a semi-infinite region in the case of irradiation-enhanced diffusion produced by a diffusion coefficient falling off exponentially in the medium. Near the surface the concentration profile due to enhanced diffusion has a larger concentration than the profile due to thermal diffusion; conversely far from the surface the enhanced-diffusion profile has a lower concentration than that due to thermal diffusion. Thus, this type of enhanced diffusion results in a more abruptly changing profile than does thermal diffusion.

Iron Dynamics In A Gas-Water-Sediment Microcosm, Peter A. Cowan, V. Dean Adams, Donald B. Porcella Jan 1976

Iron Dynamics In A Gas-Water-Sediment Microcosm, Peter A. Cowan, V. Dean Adams, Donald B. Porcella

Reports

Iron dynamics in eutrophic systems were studied in the laboratory utilizing gas-water-Sediment phase sealed microcosms. Sediments from Hyrum Reservoir (2.4 percent iron by weight) were placed in the dark to simulate the hypolimnetic regions of a eutrophic impoundment. Iron both chemically and physically was readily available to microorganisms of the aqueous phase because iron in these systems was soluble. In the light microcosms, which simulated shallow littoral regions of eutrophic impoundments, iron was found in higher aqueous phase concentrations than was predicted chemically and physically; this was rationalized through biological mechanisms. The experiment was conducted in two phases: Phase I …
