Response Of Saturated Sands To Cyclic Shear At Earthquake Amplitudes, Vincent P. Drnevich, John P. Jent Oct 1975

Response Of Saturated Sands To Cyclic Shear At Earthquake Amplitudes, Vincent P. Drnevich, John P. Jent

KWRRI Research Reports

Both quasi-static and resonant cyclic shear tests were performed on hollow cylindrical specimens of saturated sands at various densities and confining stresses. Shear moduli measured at nondestructive amplitudes were shown to be independent of frequency for the range of 0.1Hz to 50Hz. Application of cyclic shear at larger amplitudes caused effective stresses to decrease and failure. The number of cycles to failure was related to ratio of cyclic shear stress to maximum drained shear stress. Effective confining stress reduces approximately linearly with number of cycles. Shear modulus and shear damping.can be described by the Hardin-Drnevich equations if change in effective …

Trace Metals And Major Elements In Water-Soluble Rocks Of Northwest Arkansas, George H. Wagner, Kenneth F. Steele, Doy L. Zachry Jr. Oct 1975

Trace Metals And Major Elements In Water-Soluble Rocks Of Northwest Arkansas, George H. Wagner, Kenneth F. Steele, Doy L. Zachry Jr.

Technical Reports

Trace metals in limestone are potential water contaminants because they can enter the ground water when the limestone is dissolved by carbonic acid and other naturally occurring acids. Four local limestones, the St. Joe and Pitkin Formations (Mississippian) and the Brentwood and Kessler Members of the Bloyd Formation (Pennsylvanian) were sampled in a five county area in Northwest Arkansas. Atomic absorption analyses were made for Na, K, Mg, Ca, Zh, Cu, Ba, Fe, Co, Cr, Ni, Mn, Li and Sr on the acid soluble material of the samples. All the limestones are relatively pure CaCO3 with Pitkin the purest, 93.4%. …

Application Of Satellite Data And Lars' Data Processing Techniques To Mapping Vegetation Of The Dismal Swamp, Jeffrey Allan Messmore Oct 1975

Application Of Satellite Data And Lars' Data Processing Techniques To Mapping Vegetation Of The Dismal Swamp, Jeffrey Allan Messmore

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

This study concerned the feasibility of using digital satellite imagery and automatic data processing (ADP) techniques as a means of mapping swamp forest vegetation. Multispectral scanner data acquired by the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1; renamed LANDSAT-1) was analyzed using ADP techniques developed by Purdue University's Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS). The site for this investigation was the Dismal Swamp, a 210,000 acre swamp forest located south of Suffolk, Va. on the Virginia-North Carolina border. Two basic classification strategies were employed in determining the vegetation mapping capability of ERTS-1 data. The initial classification utilized unsupervised techniques which produced …

Karate Strikes, Jearl D. Walker Oct 1975

Karate Strikes, Jearl D. Walker

Physics Faculty Publications

Analysis of a forward karate punch is made as an example of collision mechanics. The energy lost to deformation of an opponent is evaluated, and the deformation is shown to be maximized if contact is made when the fist has the greatest speed. In karate fighting the maximum deformation is obtained by focusing a punch to terminate several centimeters inside an opponent’s body. The average impact force is calculated and compared with that neeeded to break a human bone by stressing it beyond its ultimate bending stress value. Similar breaking forces needed for bricks and wooden boards are also computed. …

2P3/2:2P1/2 Partial Photoionization Cross-Section Ratios In The Rare Gases , James A.R. Samson, J.L. Gardner, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The 2P3/2:2P1/2 partial photoionization cross-section ratios have been measured for the rare gases in the ionization continuum and within resonance structure. The wavelength range for this study was from the 2P1/2 ionization threshold to 304 Å. The ratio of the cross sections was found to be constant over this wavelength range, yielding ratios of 1.54, 1.77, 1.93, and 2.18 for Xe, Kr, Ar, and Ne, respectively. Within resonances, the ratio changed dramatically. Results are illustrated for xenon.

Excited States And Photochemistry Of Saturated Molecules. I. General Approach And Application To Propane, Patrick M. Saatzer, Robert D. Koob, Mark S. Gordon Sep 1975

Excited States And Photochemistry Of Saturated Molecules. I. General Approach And Application To Propane, Patrick M. Saatzer, Robert D. Koob, Mark S. Gordon

Mark S. Gordon

Following Ruedenberg, we suggest that a useful measure of chemical binding is the two-center, one-electron interference contribution to the energy in the electronic state of interest. Using this conceptual framework, the vertical valence excited states of propane in the optimal ground state geometry are examined using INDO in its original parametrization. The results are compared with available experimental information. The calculations yield bond energies which are consistent with observed decomposition modes for ground states of small alkanes and excited states of propane. Configuration interaction calculations are discussed in the case of propane. Inclusion of all single excitations from the ground …

An Optimum Symbol-By Symbol Decoding Rule For Linear Codes, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Luther D. Rudolph Sep 1975

An Optimum Symbol-By Symbol Decoding Rule For Linear Codes, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Luther D. Rudolph

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

A decoding rule is presented which minimizes the probability of symbol error over a time-discrete memoryless channel for any linear error-correcting code when the code words are equiprobable. The complexity of this rule varies inversely with code rate, making the technique particularly attractive to high rate codes. Examples are given for both block and convolutional codes.

Design Of Film—Substrate Single-Reflection Retarders, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara Sep 1975

Design Of Film—Substrate Single-Reflection Retarders, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The design steps for film—substrate single-reflection retarders are briefly stated and applied to the SiO2—Si film—substrate system at wavelength 6328 Å. The criterion of minimum-maximum error of the ellipsometric angle ψ is used to choose angle-of-incidence-tunable designs. Use is made of the (Φ-d) plane (angle of incidence versus thickness) to determine whether a given film—substrate system with known optical properties and film thickness can operate as a reflection retarder and to determine the associated angles of incidence and retardation angles. This leads to the concept of permissible-thickness bands and forbidden gaps for operation of a film—substrate …

Intrinsic Viscosity Of Stiff Dumbbells From Time Correlation Functions, Gerald Wilemski Sep 1975

Intrinsic Viscosity Of Stiff Dumbbells From Time Correlation Functions, Gerald Wilemski

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The intrinsic viscosity of a suspension of stiff dumbbells is evaluated by a time correlation function method. The required moments of the internal coordinates are calculated directly from the diffusion equation, without explicit evaluation of the Green's function. For the rigid dumbbell, the correct high frequency limit is obtained, disposing of recent doubts over this possibility. The interplay of dumbbell stiffness and shearing frequency is also illustrated.

Relationship Between The Linear Ringing Frequencies In 3he-A And 3he-B Near The Polycritical Point, Richard A. Webb, R. E. Sager, J. C. Wheatley Sep 1975

Relationship Between The Linear Ringing Frequencies In 3he-A And 3he-B Near The Polycritical Point, Richard A. Webb, R. E. Sager, J. C. Wheatley

Faculty Publications

New measurements of parallel ringing in a quasi-ideal geometry for 3He-B near the temperature and pressure of the polycritical point suggest fB2/fA2∼5/2, where fB and fA are the linear parallel-ringing frequencies at a given temperature near Tc. This result approaches the prediction of theory using the Anderson-Brinkman-Morel and Balian-Werthamer states to describe 3He-A and 3He-B, respectively, and hence the results of Osheroff at melting pressure, but disagrees with earlier observations at pressures near the polycritical point.

On The Zeros Of Monotone Operators Of Retarded Type In A Banach Space, Patrick Sutherland, V. Lakshmikantham Sep 1975

On The Zeros Of Monotone Operators Of Retarded Type In A Banach Space, Patrick Sutherland, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

Recent interest in the Cauchy problem for differential equations in a Banach space [9] has stimulated a similar interest for differential equations of a retarded type in a Banach space. The difficulty in imposing assumptions due to a different range and domain space has been overcome in [4] where existence of solutions is established using a monotoni- city type condition in terms of norm and weaker forms of differential inequalities. The theory of existence of solutions of differential equations has been used in [1,2,5,6,7] to obtain existence of zeros and fixed points for nonlinear operators from E into E. In …

A Survey Of Techniques For Determining Lower Confidence Bounds On Series System Reliability Based On Subsystem Test Data, Danny D. Dyer Sep 1975

A Survey Of Techniques For Determining Lower Confidence Bounds On Series System Reliability Based On Subsystem Test Data, Danny D. Dyer

Mathematics Technical Papers

A problem of considerable interest and for which a great deal of research has been expended is that of determining lower confidence bounds on series system reliability based on subsystem failure data. With regard to the types of failure data taken on the subsystems, primary consideration is given to binomial (pass-fail) data, exponentially distributed time-to-fail data for both Type I censoring (fixed test times) and Type II censoring (fixed number of failures), or any mixture thereof. In this survey we shall examine optimum solutions whenever they exist, approximate optimum solutions, and nonoptimum solutions. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the …

Synthetic Analogs Of Active Sites Of Iron-Sulfur Proteins: Bis (O-Xylyldithiolato) Ferrate (Iii) Monoanion, A Structurally Unconstrained Model For The Rubredoxin Fe-S4 Unit, R. W. Lane, James A. Ibers, Richard B. Frankel, R. H. Holm

Physics

To complete the set of synthetic analogs of the three recognized types of active sites in iron-sulfur redox proteins, the compound (Et4N)[Fe((SCH2)2C6H4)2], derived from o-xylyl-α,α'-dithiol, has been prepared and its structure has been determined by x-ray diffraction. The bischelate anion contains a near-tetrahedral Fe(III)-S4 coordination unit with small rhombic distortions and all Fe-S bond distances in the range 2.252-2.279 Å. Its electronic properties have been partially characterized by measurement of electronic absorption, paramagnetic resonance, Mössbauer spectra, and magnetic susceptibility. The analog, as …
