Sand-sized residues from partial acetic acid digestion of three samples of the Big Springs Limestone Member of the Lecompton Limestone (Pennsylvanian) from two localities in Cass County, Nebraska, have yielded sixteen genera of microfossils from five major groups of organisms and numerous other whole and partial fossils from seven other groups not identified to the genus level. These fossils include: Protozoa (fusulinids*); Porifera (one spicule type); Bryozoa (two undetermined genera); Brachiopoda (fragments); Gastropoda (two undetermined forms); Ostracoda (Bairdia*, Hollinella*, Moorites*, and one undetermined genus); Crinoidea (whole and partial ossicles*); Echinoidea (whole and partial spines and spine bases*); Holothuroidea (Achistrum …

A computer program tailored for EMP damage analysis of solid-state circuitry has been developed by modifying the existing TRAC network analysis program. Modification of the TRAC diode and transistor models to include breakdown parameters and the addition of a semiconductor device parameter library have greatly simplified the analyst's task. An added feature is a subroutine that automatically calculates the amplitude and duration of transient power dissipated in electronic circuit components.

The 14C light and dark bottle technique for measurement of primary production was utilized as a means of assessing the amount of inorganic carbon being converted Into organic form by the photosynthesis of phytoplankton populations In the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead.

Spatial and time series changes of productivity levels observed at eight sampling locations within Boulder Basin Indicate that the Influence of treated municipal arts' industrial effluent flowing into Les Vegas Bay is contributing high levels of available nutrients at Las Vegas Wash Inlet to cause productivity to approximate those levels associated with polluted waters.

A quantitative study of nucleation in vapor mixtures of ethanol and water near 273°C is presented. First, Reiss' theory of binary nucleation is reexamined. The theory is modified slightly in order to yield the proper limit for homogeneous nucleation in a one-component system. Moreover, a corrected expression for the equilibrium concentration of mixed clusters is derived. Calculations of the critical vapor activities needed to produce a visible condensate are presented and compared with the results of Flood's cloud chamber experiments. The agreement is only fair, but qualitative accord is found.

The mapped area represents the eastern three-fourths of the Malad Summit Quadrangle, Idaho. It lies mainly in the Bannock Range of southeastern Idaho. The northern and southern margins of the area are 25.5 miles and 17.0 miles, respectively, north of the Idaho-Utah State Line.

The Caddy Canyon Formation of Late Precambrian age is the oldest exposed stratigraphic unit. The youngest unit, exclusively of Precambrian age, is the Mutual Formation. The Brigham Formation is considered to be of Late Precambrian to Early Cambrian(?) age. Younger formations of Cambrian to Silurian age are present. The Precambrian units, as well as the Brigham, …

The reaction of dimethylcopper lithium and di-n-butylcopper lithium with 3-bromo-2-(2-phenylacetamido) acrylic acid, mp 174 - 175°, produced as major products 3-methyl-2-(2-phenylacetamido) acrylic acid and 3-n-butyl-2-(2-phenylacetamido) acrylic acid, respectively. The dimethylcopper lithium reaction was stereospecific for the E geometrical isomer, mp 198 - 199°, and produced 3-methyl-2-(2-phenylacetamido) acrylic acid and 2-(2-phenylacetamido) acrylic acid in a 3:1 molar ratio, respectively. The di-n-butylcopper lithium reaction produced as the main products 3-n-butyl-2-(2-phenylacetamido) acrylic acid and 2-(2- phenylacetamido) acrylic acid in a 7:1 molar ratio, respectively, with the 3-n-butylacrylic acid comprising 83% of the product. Exploratory Sensitivity Analysis Of A Stream Ecosystem Model, Joseph H. Wlosinski

The framework of a stream ecosystem simulation model is described. Using this framework and data from two different geographical areas, a cold desert stream and a generalized mountain stream, exploratory sensitivity analysis was performed on the model. This was accomplished by qualitatively comparing outputs of a series of simulations in which a different level of a driving variable was used in each simulation. Based on these results, recommendations are made for improving the structure of the model.

Four statistics used for the analysis of categorical data were observed in the presence of many zero cell frequencies in two way classification contingency tables. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of many zero cell frequencies upon the distribution properties of each of the four statistics studied. It was found that Light and Margolin's C and Pearson's Chi-square statistic closely approximated the Chi-square distribution as long as less than one-third of the table cells were empty. The purpose of this thesis is t o describe the occurrences, interrelationships, and possible origin of the metallic mineral deposits of the Bear River Range. In this study, 21 mineral deposits containing minerals of lead, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc with quartz and carbonate gangue minerals, are described and classified as low temperature epigenetic hydrothermal deposits. The deposits predominantly occur in Cambrian limestone and dolomite formations located below formations with a high shale content. The deposition occurred as fracture filling and replacement along fractures associated with Teritary Basin and Range normal faults and joints which generally trend northerly in the …

The mapped area, which includes the eastern part of the Richmond and the western part of the Naomi Peak quadrangles, Utah-Idaho, is located in the central part of northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. It is located along the eastern side of Cache Valley and western side of the Bear River Range. Cache Valley is in the Basin and Range province and the Bear River Range is in the Middle Rocky Mountain province. The mapped area is about 8.6 miles long, in the north-south direction, and 7.8 miles long, in the east-west direction.

The role of the time lag needed to attain steady state nucleation in binary vapors is discussed. Under appropriate conditions it is possible to obtain both a large predicted rate of binary nucleation and a large time lag. In this circumstance, homogeneous nucleation of the more concentrated component may be the predominant process. It is of obvious importance to the experimentalist to differentiate between these possibilities. Approximate formulas for the time lags are developed, and representative calculations for the ethanol-water system are reported.

The southeastern part of the Black Pine Mountains is located in the southeastern part of Cassia County, southern Idaho. The Utah-Idaho state line is three miles south of the studied area and the Cassia-Oneida county line bounds it on the east. The area is nearly square and encompasses about 30 square miles.

Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, Permian, Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks are exposed within the area. Limestone, dolomitic limestime, quartzite, and bedded chert represent the Jefferson (?) Formation of Devonian age. It is 400 feet thick, however, the base is not exposed. Astragalus lentiginosus, which consists of 36 varieties, is one of the principal locoweeds of western North America. The objectives of this study included identification of some of the major factors affecting germination of the seed and survival of the newly established seedlings for several of these varieties.

The seeds of the varieties studied exhibited two mechanisms for dormancy. One is a seed coat that is impermeable to water, and the other is a water-leachable inhibitor. The presence or absence of low-intensity incandescent light (in 14-hour day lengths) had no effect on germination. Of three temperature regimes studied, the regime …

Although water stress is an important selective force in many environments, it is not commonly considered to be of particular importance in tundra areas. Even though large portions of tundra may have an abundance of water, other more exposed areas may become quite dry. This microsite variability with respect to moisture stress was reflected in soil water potential measurements obtained from an alpine tundra area on Niwot Ridge in Colorado. During 1973 and 1974 a water quality study was conducted in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. In 1973, baseline water quality data was collected from study locations which had been chained to remove pinyon-juniper vegetation six years earlier. The area had been chained under two different techniques: (1) doubled chained, with debris-left-in-place and (2) chained, with debris windrowed. An "undisturbed, natural" woodland was left between these two treatments in order to serve as a control area.

In the fall of 1973 and spring of 1974 secondary treatments of burning and grazing were superimposed upon the debris-in-place and windrowed sites, respectively. …

Using greenhouse pot techniques, 32 drilling mud components were tested to see if, at a high rate of addition, they reduced plant growth. Green beans and sweet corn were the test plants. The excellent black, silt loam, slightly acidic, uncultivated Dagor soil (Cumulic Haploxeroll) was used for most tests. Rates used were considered to be abnormal level (high rate) and usual (low rate) amounts that might be added in commonly used drilling muds.

The ephemeral stream channel is a particularly obvious and distinctive hydrologic feature of the American Southwest. This is notably true of northwestern New Mexico and northeastern Arizona where a semiarid upland environment, characterized by relatively flat-lying or gently warped sedimentary rocks, has been subjected to the development of can­yons and basins with moderate to deep alluvial fills. This area provides an ideal setting for a geomorphological phenomenon known as "valley trenching."

The rights of these States to establish special juridical arrangements for their adjacent waters, and the effects of these decisions on other nations form the central theme. Accurate quantum mechanical close coupling (CC) integral cross sections are reported for rotationally inelastic Ar-N2 collisions at room temperature using an empirical intermolecular potential. These cross sections are used to test the infinite order sudden (IOS) approximation and the results of several methods [classical trajectories (CT), full sudden (SA), generalized phase shift (GPS), and classical limit generalized phase shift (CGPS)] as reported in the preceding paper by Pattengill. The IOS approximation works very well for cross sections involving low rotational states.
