Statistical Analysis Of Fourier Coefficients In A Restricted Harmonic Dial, Danny D. Dyer Apr 1975

Statistical Analysis Of Fourier Coefficients In A Restricted Harmonic Dial, Danny D. Dyer

Mathematics Technical Papers

Due to the physical nature of certain periodic data, the harmonic dial points (the Fourier coefficients obtained from harmonic analysis of the data) are sometimes restricted to circular regions in the dialplane. It is proposed that a circular normal distribution (CND) truncated outside a circular region be used to describe the probabilistic behavior of the random phenomena. Recurrence relations for the population moments of a CND truncated outside a circular region are derived. These recurrence relations are used to obtain consistent asymptotically (jointly) normal estimators of the unknown parameters of the distribution. A numerical example based on the harmonic dial …

Composition, Time, And Size Distributions Of Airborne Particulate Material In Utah Valley, Douglas R. Lawson Apr 1975

Composition, Time, And Size Distributions Of Airborne Particulate Material In Utah Valley, Douglas R. Lawson

Theses and Dissertations

The Lundgren impactor is used to determine the variations in time and size distributions of particulate matter in Utah Valley. Charged particle X-ray fluorescence is employed in this study to determine elemental concentrations. Air samples are taken during two 24-hour periods in downtown Provo, 24 hours near U.S. Steel Corporation, Geneva Works, and 12 hours at Lindon Elementary School, and diurnal particulate variations are compared. The amounts of lead and bromine are four times greater on a weekday than on a Sunday in downtown Provo, suggesting the effect of the automobile on atmospheric particulate concentrations. Paraffin coated impaction surfaces are …

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of A Free Radical Decay In Aqueous Solution, Denzel Lee Fillmore Apr 1975

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of A Free Radical Decay In Aqueous Solution, Denzel Lee Fillmore

Theses and Dissertations

The decomposition of nitrosyl disulfonate ion was studied in strongly alkaline solution of 10-2 to 5 m sodium hydroxide. The decomposition was found to be first-order in both hydroxide and nitrosyl disulfonate ions. A multi-step mechanism involving sulfite ion, sulfite ion radical and nitrosyl monosulfonate ion radical as intermediates was proposed, with the initiating step being the SN2 replacement of a sulfite ion by a hydroxide ion. The rate constant for the initiating step ranged from 1.2 x 10-7 to 2.25 x 10-5 M-1s-1 for the solution concentration range of the study. The products of the decomposition were identified as …

Theses and Dissertations

A method of trace element analysis using proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) techniques with energy dispersive X-ray detection methods is described. Data were processed using the computer program ANALEX. PIXE analysis methods were applied to the analysis of liver, spleen, aorta, kidney medulla, kidney cortex, abdominal fat, pancreas and hair from autopsies of Pima Indians. Tissues were freeze dried and low temperature ashed before analysis. Concentrations were tabulated for K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Cd and Cs and examined for significant differences related to diabetes. Concentrations of Ca and Sr in aorta, …

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul Apr 1975

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul

Theses and Dissertations

Serine transhydroxymethylase was purified one thousand-fold from bovine brain and one hundred and twenty-fold from bovine liver. Both enzymes were yellow due to the presence of the coenzyme pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the liver enzyme showed one major band containing 95% of the protein, while in the case of the brain enzyme two major bands of nearly equal intensity were observable. The specific activity of the crude liver enzyme was about sixty times higher than that of brain. The liver enzyme was also more heat stable than the brain enzyme. The purified enzymes exhibited L-allothreonine and L-threonine aldolase …

Use Of Selected Macroinvertebrates As Indicators Of Sedimentation Effects On Huntington River, Utah, Michael Kenneth Reichert Mar 1975

Use Of Selected Macroinvertebrates As Indicators Of Sedimentation Effects On Huntington River, Utah, Michael Kenneth Reichert

Theses and Dissertations

Benthic macroinvertebrate communities of Huntington River, Emery County, Utah were studied to determine effects of sedimentation from construction of Electric Lake Dam, a state highway, and two bridges. Approximately 900 benthic samples were collected from riffle areas above, in, and below the construction zone from January, 1971 to December, 1973. Two settling basins below construction sites were effective in limiting scouring of downstream communities. Heavy silt deposition was limited to a 1-km stream reach. Number of indicators, density, and biomass were reduced in the construction zone during periods of sediment input. During periods of scouring, density and biomass were reduced; …

Localized Orbital Studies Of Hydrogen Bonding. Ii. Dimers Containing H 2 0, Nh 3, Hf, H 2 Co, And Hcn, Mark S. Gordon, Dennis E. Tallman, Cathy Monroe, Michael Steinbach, Jill Armbrust Mar 1975

Localized Orbital Studies Of Hydrogen Bonding. Ii. Dimers Containing H 2 0, Nh 3, Hf, H 2 Co, And Hcn, Mark S. Gordon, Dennis E. Tallman, Cathy Monroe, Michael Steinbach, Jill Armbrust

Mark S. Gordon

INDO localized molecular orbitals (LMO's) are utilized for investigating the nature of intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the fully geometry optimized dimers (HFh, (Hz0)2, (NH3)2, FH-OH2, HOH-FH, FH-NH3, H 2NH-FH, H20-HNH2, HOH-NH3, HCN-HF, and HzCO-HF. The results suggest that a reasonable measure of relative hydrogen bond strengths should be the intra bond, two-center, one-electron interference energy connecting the acceptor atom and donated proton. This approach views the net stabilization energy of a hydrogen bonded dimer as arising from a large energy decrease due to formation of the hydrogen bond, modified by smaller energy increases due to internal decreases in monomer bond …

Ellipsometric Function Of A Film-Substrate System: Applications To The Design Of Reflection-Type Optical Devices And To Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The ratio ρ = Rp/Rs of the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients Rp and Rs for light polarized parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) to the plane of incidence, reflected from an optically isotropic film-substrate system, is investigated as a function of the angle of incidence ϕ and the film thickness d. Both constant-angle-of-incidence contours (CAIC) and constant-thickness contours (CTC) of the ellipsometric function ρ(ϕ,d) in the complex ρ plane are examined. For transparent films, ρ(ϕ,d) is a periodic function of d with period Dϕ that is a function of ϕ. …

Mossbauer Measurements With '"Au In Aua1„Auga„Auin„And Ausb, John O. Thomson, Felix E. Obenshain, Paul G. Huray, John C. Love, John W. Burton

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Mossbauer spectra for '"Au in Au metal and the intermetallic compounds AuAl„AuGa„AuIn„and AuSb2 have been obtained for the temperature range 4.2 to 95'K. The isomer shifts for these absorbers with respect to a ' Au in Pt source are —1.223(2) [Au metal], + 2.288(12) [AuSb2], + 3.489(4) [AuIn2], +4.450(11) [AuGa, ], and +.5.967(5) [AuAl, ] in units of mm/sec. The difference in isomer shifts (alloy-Au-metal) may be interpreted in terms of an increasing electron charge density at the Au nucleus in the alloys as compared to that of Au metal. When volume changes for the alloys with respect to the …

Differential Cross Sections For Elastic And Inelastic Scattering Of 15-100-Kev Li⁺ By He, John T. Park, Victor Pol, James E. Lawler, Jacob M. George, Judith E. Aldag, John W. Parker, Jerry Peacher Mar 1975

Differential Cross Sections For Elastic And Inelastic Scattering Of 15-100-Kev Li⁺ By He, John T. Park, Victor Pol, James E. Lawler, Jacob M. George, Judith E. Aldag, John W. Parker, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sets of energy-loss spectra for Li+ incident on He that were taken at a series of scattering angles were used to calculate differential cross sections. Differential cross sections are given for elastic scattering and for excitation of the He (n=2) states. The differential cross section is also given for excitation of states corresponding to a 60-eV energy loss. These inelastic differential cross sections exhibit maxima at scattering angles greater than zero. The velocity dependence of the cross sections can be compensated by displaying the elastic data in ρ-vs-τ plots and the inelastic data in ρ-vs-E3/2θ plots. When …

Several small oil slicks were incidentally observed during the experiments and their behavior has been discussed in relation …

Perfect Polynomials Over Gf(Q), James R. O'Connell Jr., Jacob T. B. Beard Jr., Karen I. West Mar 1975

Perfect Polynomials Over Gf(Q), James R. O'Connell Jr., Jacob T. B. Beard Jr., Karen I. West

Mathematics Technical Papers

A monic polynomial [see pdf for notation] is called perfect over GF(q) if and only if the sum [see pdf for notation] of the distinct monic divisors in GF[q,x] of A(x) equals A(x). Principal results characterize all perfect polynomials over GF(p) which split in GF[p,x]. Related results lead to conjectured analogs of the classical problem on the existence of odd perfect numbers.

Vector Lyapunov Functions And Perturbations Of Nonlinear Systems, Marion E. Moore, Roger W. Mitchell Mar 1975

Vector Lyapunov Functions And Perturbations Of Nonlinear Systems, Marion E. Moore, Roger W. Mitchell

Mathematics Technical Papers

Two recent papers [2,3] have combined the techniques of the Lyapunov method and the nonlinear variation of parameters to study the effects of perturbations of nonlinear differential systems. In this paper, we generalize the results obtained in [2,3] by the use of several Lyapunov functions and the concept of a generalized norm. To convince ourselves that we do have more flexibility in working with the generalized norm and vector Lyapunov functions see [1,4].

Let A denote an Algebra with an identity element. Consider an [see pdf for notation] matrix [see pdf for notation] with a partitioning [see pdf for notation] where E and H have respective orders [see pdf for notation] and [see pdf for notation]. We seek to obtain conditions under which A is similar to a matrix D of the form [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation] denotes the zero [see pdf for notation] matrix over A. Some advantage is gained in working in a general algebra. The algebra A may be taken as a Banach algebra of …

Unitary Perfect Polynomials Over Gf(Q), Jacob T. B. Beard Mar 1975

Unitary Perfect Polynomials Over Gf(Q), Jacob T. B. Beard

Mathematics Technical Papers

For monic polynomials A(x), B(x) e GF[q,x], call B(x) a unitary divisor of A(x) provided (B(x),A(x)/B(x)) = 1 . The polynomial A(x) is called unitary perfect over GF(q) if and only if the sum [see pdf for notation] of the distinct unitary divisors of A(x) equals A(x). Principal results characterize all unitary perfect polynomials over GF(p) which split in GF[p,x].

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel Mar 1975

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior). It was hypothesized that a person with an internal locus (one who believes his actions influence his future) would be more likely to comply with a medical regimen than one with an external locus …
