The Effect Of Cyclic Differential Stress On Dilatancy In Westerly Granite Under Uniaxial And Triaxial Conditions, Mark D. Zoback, James D. Byerlee Jan 1975

The Effect Of Cyclic Differential Stress On Dilatancy In Westerly Granite Under Uniaxial And Triaxial Conditions, Mark D. Zoback, James D. Byerlee

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Laboratory experiments have been performed on samples of Westerly granite in which the differential stress was repeatedly cycled to 85% of the intact sample strength. The experiments have shown that under uniaxial conditions the onset of dilatancy is reduced to fairly low stress; however, under triaxial conditions dilatancy can be an apparently stable process, and the onset of dilatancy is not affected by the repeated cycling. Thus the implication for midcrustal earthquakes is that the onset of dilatancy repeatedly occurs at relatively high stress levels. For example, our results indicate that at typical focal depths of 2.5 and 10 km …

The Effect Of Microcrack Dilatancy On The Permeability Of Westerly Granite, Mark D. Zoback, James D. Byerlee Jan 1975

The Effect Of Microcrack Dilatancy On The Permeability Of Westerly Granite, Mark D. Zoback, James D. Byerlee

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Permeability and volumetric strain were measured under constant confining pressure and pore pressure as a function of increasing and decreasing differential stress. Permeability was found to increase appreciably during dilatancy. Our results have also shown that permeability and dilatant volume changes are not unique functions of differential stress and that permeability changes with differential stress are not uniquely dependent upon dilatant volume changes. Most significant, however, is that if dilatancy-fluid diffusion occurs in situ, our results indicate that microcrack dilatancy is not a reasonable physical mechanism
to account for such a phenomenon.

Supersaturated Zincate Solutions, W. Van Doorne, T. P. Dirkse Jan 1975

Supersaturated Zincate Solutions, W. Van Doorne, T. P. Dirkse

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

A study of supersaturated zincate solutions is made using light scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The results indicate strongly that the excess zinc is present as a solute species rather than in a colloidal form. The solute species appears to be the same as that in solutions of ZnO in aqueous KOH, viz., Zn(OH)42-. There is no strong evidence to indicate the presence of other solute species.

A Survey Of Land Suitable For Townsville Stylo In The North Kimberley Of W.A. 1973, A Kubicki, J. Beer Jan 1975

A Survey Of Land Suitable For Townsville Stylo In The North Kimberley Of W.A. 1973, A Kubicki, J. Beer

Books & book chapters

The aims of the survey were to -

(a) define the extent and actual location of country suitable for the production of non-indigenous pastures; in particular to classify the land for its suitability for Townsville stylo (Styioaanthes hurniiia).

(b) map the areas so defined on a land system basis.

The area surveyed covered approximately 88 000 sq.km (33 968 sq.miles) and included most of the catchments of the Carson, Drysdale, King Edward, Prince Regent, Charnley, Isdell and Chapman Rivers. It covered the country between latitude 14°S and 17°S and longitude 124°30'E and 127°30'E.

1975 Weed Control In Lupin Investigations, J M. Allen

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

1. The results with pre emergence herbicides confirm previous recommendations of simazine 1.25 kg/ha on heavy soil and diuron 1.25 kg/ha on light soils with the following modification. a) Simazine rates need to be increased to 3 kg/ha on very early (April) sovm crops in southern areas. b) Simazine has not damaged lupins in southern areas and where ryegrass is a major problem on sandy soils (i.e. Esperance) it is likely to give better responses than diuron. 2. As suspected in previous years simazine can by way of effective weed control produce a marked lupin vegetative response without any increase …

Construction Of Amicable Orthogonal Designs, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1975

Construction Of Amicable Orthogonal Designs, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Infinite families of amicable orthogonal designs are constructed with

(i) both of type (1, q) in order q + 1 when q = 3, (mod 4 ) is a prime power,

(ii) both of type (1, q) in order 2(q+1) where q = 1 (mod 4) is a prime power or q + 1 is the order of a conference matrix,

(iii) both of type (2, 2q) in order 2(q+l) when q = 1 (mod 4) is a prime power or q + 1 is the order of a conference matrix.

On The Matrices Used To Construct Baumert-Hall Arrays, Richard B. Lakein, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Four circulant (or type 1) (0,1,-1) matrices X1, X2, X3, X4 of order t with the property that each of the t2 positions is non-zero in precisely one of the Xi and such that

X1X1T+ X2X2T + X3X3T + X4X4T = tIt

will be called T-matrices.

This paper studies the construction, use and properties of T-matrices giving a new construction for Hadamard matrices and some new equivalence results for Hadamard matrices and Baumert-Hall …

An Algorithm For Orthogonal Designs, Peter Eades, Peter J. Robinson, Jennifer Seberry, Ian S. Williams Jan 1975

An Algorithm For Orthogonal Designs, Peter Eades, Peter J. Robinson, Jennifer Seberry, Ian S. Williams

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Let A =(si) be an n-tuple of positive integers such that Esi = 2k. We give an algorithm which shows that there exists a p = (RA(n, k) - (k+1)) such that there is an orthogonal design of type (2ps1, 2ps2,..., 2psn) in order 2k+p. We evaluate the maximum of p over n-tuples A which add to 2k. Hence we deduce that for any n and k there is an integer q = max RA(n, k) - …
