Rates Of Water Entry Into The Subsoil Of Several Soil Series In Nebraska, David T. Lewis Jan 1975

Rates Of Water Entry Into The Subsoil Of Several Soil Series In Nebraska, David T. Lewis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Rates of water entry were measured for 11 soil series representing many of the soils in parts of Nebraska where urban growth is most intensive. The wetting procedure in making the tests is critical and a 24 hour wetting time as usually recommended is not adequate for all soils if the percolation test is made during a dry season. Rates of water entry differed among soils even though a large amount of variation was evident within the same soil series. Statistical analysis showed a highly significant negative relationship between both clay content and bulk density and rates of water entry. …

The preparation of Hx TaS2 (0 < x < 0.87) is described. The compounds are only marginally stable at room temperature, slowly evolving H2S and H2 (and possibly Hp in air). Magnetic susceptibility data show that a low temperature transformation in 2H ... TaS2 (at so•K) is suppressed with the addition of hydrogen, and· at the same time the superconducting transition temperature T c rises from 0.8 to ~4.2•K at x = 0.11. Heat capacity measurements near this concentration show the superconductivity to be a bulk effect. Finally, by correlation of this data with susceptibility and T c measurements in other intercalation compounds, we suggest that the rise of T c (at low electron transfer) is due to suppression of the low temperature transformation and not due to an excitonic mechanism of superconductivity.

The layered compounds 2H-NbSe, 24Hb-TaS, 2and 1T-TaS2 have been intercalated with organic molecules; and the resulting crystal structure, heat capacity, conductivity, and superconductivity have been studied. The coordination in the disulfide layers was found to be unchanged in the product phase. Resistance minima appear and the superconducting transition temperature is reduced in the NbSe2 complex. Conversely, superconductivity is induced in the 4Hb-TaS2 complex. Corresponding evidence of a large change of the density of states, negative for 2H-NbSe2 and positive for 4Hb-TaS2, was also observed upon intercalation. The transport properties of all the intercalation complexes show a pronounced dependence upon the …

Locating The St. Louis Urban Plume At 80 And 120 Km And Some Of Its Characteristics, J. F. Stampfer, J. A. Anderson

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The feasibility of locating the urban plume of a moderately large urban area, as far as 120 km downwind, is shown. The method utilizes a single engine aircraft and aerosol instrumentation. A summary of the data obtained from 34 flights, during an 8-month period, is presented and the problems involved in interpreting the data are discussed. These difficulties include nonuniform background levels outside the plume, changing relative humidity, low wind speeds and stable atmospheric layers. The plume was characterized by concentrations of small particles (0.15 < r < 0.3 μm) ca. 1.5 times that in background air and concentrations of large particles (0.3 < r < 1.3 μm) usually greater than twice that in the background. The ratio of the concentrations of small particles to large particles in the plume was about one-half of that in the background. © 1975.

A New Approach To The Method Of Nonlinear Variation Of Parameters, A. Richard Mitchell, M. E. Lord Jan 1975

A New Approach To The Method Of Nonlinear Variation Of Parameters, A. Richard Mitchell, M. E. Lord

Mathematics Technical Papers

As is well-known [3] the method of variation of parameters is a very useful tool in studying the properties of solutions of perturbed differential equations. Extending the classical variation of constants formula for linear systems, Alekseev [1] obtained a variation of constants formula for nonlinear systems. In [2], Lakshmikantham developed a nonlinear variation of constants formula for a scalar differential equation whose unperturbed term is of variable separable type, under rather mild assumptions. In this paper, we wish to study the general problem under weaker assumptions. Our approach is parallel to the classical one and yields two different formulas, one …

On Massera Type Converse Theorem In Terms Of Two Different Measures (0), V. Lakshmikantham Jan 1975

On Massera Type Converse Theorem In Terms Of Two Different Measures (0), V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

The importance of uniform asymptotic stability in studying the stability properties of perturbed motions needs no emphasis. The converse theorem of Massera which results from uniform asymptotic stability has been widely used in perturbation theory (See [1,2,0]).Very recently [31 this powerful theorem has been fruitfully employed to investigate bifurcation problems and seems to have much future in that direction. The advantage of studying stability properties by means of two different measures, as given by Movehan [41 , is well-known (See also [2,51 ). However, there does not exist a converse theorem of Massera type when uniform asymptotic stability holds in …

Breeding Waterfowl Populations In South Dakota, Wayne G. Brewster Jan 1975

Breeding Waterfowl Populations In South Dakota, Wayne G. Brewster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breeding waterfowl in South Dakota were censused on 500 legal quarter sections within 125 clusters representing a proportional stratified random sample of 0.16 percent of the state area. Two breeding pair counts, one in May and second in June, were conducted each year on the sample units in 1973 and 1974. Densities of total breeding pairs averaged 5.58 and 2.30 pairs per km2 in 1973 and 1974, respectively. Estimated populations based upon these densities were 1,067,500 breeding pairs in 1973 and 439,600 breeding pairs in 1974. The 58.8 percent decrease in the population occurred concurrently with intensification of drought conditions …

Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus: Phosphate Thioesters, Ronnie L. Wilde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It was my objective to try to determine the mechanism of nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus in monothiophosphate triesters and to apply what I learn to the other phosphate systems. I also tried to obtain more data to show that the Lewis acid-base type complex through the phosphoryl oxygen is existent and does influence the reaction.

Tetrazoline Chemistry, Norman Wallace Rokke Jan 1975

Tetrazoline Chemistry, Norman Wallace Rokke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It was of interest to investigate the chemistry of some tetrazolines since they might be sources of heteroatomic analogues of trimethylenemethane. In addition, they might provide alternate means of synthesis of small ring compounds such as diaziridinones and diaziridineimines. New compounds which were prepared are 1-(2,6-dimethylphenyl) tetrazoline-5-one, 1-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-4-methyltetrazoline-5-one, l-phenyl-4-methyl-5-iminotetrazoline, l-phenyl-4-methyl-5- methyliminotetrazoline, and l-phenyl-4-methyl-5-methyliminotetrazoline methiodide. The mass spectra of the tetrazolines investigated are characterized by ring fragmentations which are helpful in determining their structure. In addition, fragmentation represents one of the few examples of a retro-1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction initiated by electron impact. The monosubstituted tetrazolines are thermally unstable. The course of …

Food And Distribution Of Underyearling Brook And Rainbow Trout In Castle Lake, California, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, R. Brocksen, C. Goldman

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

A difference was found in the summer distribution of underyearling brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), and planted rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, in Castle Lake, California. Brook trout underyearlings oriented to the bottom and were found primarily in shallow water on the eastern shore of the lake near springs. The rainbow trout underyearlings were more pelagic and were found in the littoral areas along the entire shoreline. Gravimetrically, the food eaten during the summer by brook trout underyearlings was 13% terrestrial, 11% limnetic, and 76% benthic. Rainbow trout ate 15% terrestrial, 15% limnetic, and 70% benthic food. In summer, rainbow …

Auroral Energy Input From Energetic Electrons And Joule Heating At Chatanika, Vincent B. Wickwar, M J. Baron, R D. Sears

All Physics Faculty Publications

With the incoherent scatter radar at Chatanika, Alaska, a wide variety of measurements can be made related to the ionosphere, magnetosphere, and neutral atmosphere. A significant parameter is the amount of energy transferred from the magnetosphere into the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere during periods of auroral activity. In this report we examine a procedure whereby the incident energy flux of auroral electrons is ascertained from radar measurements. As part of the process we compare radar-determined fluxes with those ascertained from simultaneous photometric observations at 4278 Å. The fluxes obtained by both techniques had similar magnitudes and time variations. If we …

Urban Storm Runoff Inlet Hydrograph Study Volume 1: Computer Analysis Of Runoff From Urban Highway Watersheds Under Time- And Space-Varying Rainstorms, Chen-Lung Chen

Reports

The main objective of this study is to develop an accurate design method for computing inlet hydrographs of surface runoff, with average recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years, from typical urban highway by flood routing technique. The most comprehensive mathematical model based on the method of characteristics was developed for computing the runoff inlet hydrograph. All flood routing methods were extensively reviewed and the most efficient and accurate technique was adopted for the formulation of a numerical (computer) model including all the rainfall-runoff processes on a highway watershed. Accuracy of the computer model was then examined by comparing …

Reports

To study the effects of a forest fire on runoff characteristics, the Utah State University Watershed Simulation Model (USUWSM) has been applied to three small drainage areas in the Entiat Experimental Watershed which is located within the Wenatchee National Forest of central Washington. Each component of the USUWSM has been described in the report, including structural changes to the model that were necessary to achieve reasonable agreement between observed and simulated runoff hydrographs. Lack of information on the spatial distribution and precipitation due to the absence of an adequate precipitation gaging network on or close to the study area was …

Modeling Phytoplankton Blooms In A Stratified Embayment, William J. Grenney Jan 1975

Modeling Phytoplankton Blooms In A Stratified Embayment, William J. Grenney

Reports

A mathematical model was developed to simulate the nitrogen limited growth dynamics of phytoplankton in a stratefied embayment. The representation of biological growth dynamics includes consideration of intracellular nutrient storage as well as the effects of temperature and light intensity. Several competing species can be represented simultaneously. Model hydrodynamics represent the effects of vertical mixing in the water column on the physical distribution of nutrients and phytoplankton. Sinking velocities of the cells are also included. The model was applied to Auke Bay, Alaska, and model responses are compared to data observed during the spring and summer of 1967.

Impacts Of Energy Development On Utah Water Resources, Barry C. Saunders

Reports

Introduction: Choosing a theme for a conference especially one for a group of diverse disciplines such as the American Water Resources Association encompasses, is always a challenge. you find yourself torn between thigns you'd really like to talk and hear about, and topics you think will draw attendance. It was most fortunate when somebody came up with the idea of Water for Energy, becasue to my way of thinking, it met both of these ends. There is no denying that starting in late 1973, energy has been the catchword, and the energy crisis has been the bandwagon to leap upon. …
