Inductance

Calculus-Based General Physics

Anyone who has ever grabbed an automobile spark-pluq wire at the wrong place, with the engine running, has an appreciation of the ability of a changinq current in (part of) a coil of wire to induce an emf in the coil. What happens is that the breaker contacts open, suddenly interrupting the current, and causing a sudden large change in the magnetic field through the coil; according to Faraday's law, this results in a (large) induced emf. In general, the production of an emf in a coil by a changing magnetic field due to a current in that same coil …

Impulse And Momentum Jan 1975

Impulse And Momentum

Calculus-Based General Physics

You have already learned that you stub your toe harder trying to kick larger masses. Now imagine another unpleasant activity: catching a bowling ball. This gets harder to do as the ball is dropped from higher places. The difficulty depends both on the ball's mass and its velocity just before you apply the stopping force. This force can be applied in different ways. Any winner of an egg-throwing contest will tell you the way to stop an object with the least force is to spread the stopping process out over a maximum time.

This module will develop the above "folk …

Middle And Late Cenozoic Tapirs From Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin, R. George Corner Jan 1975

Middle And Late Cenozoic Tapirs From Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin, R. George Corner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

The distribution and evolution of Late Cenozoic tapirs are discussed and the forms present in Nebraska are reported. Two new species are described from the Ogallala Pliocene of Nebraska, ?Tapirus johnsoni and ?T. simpsoni. Tapirs are known in Nebraska from the Early Oligocene through the Middle Pleistocene. The northern limit of the distribution of the tapirs contracts gradually southward in North America throughout the Tertiary, and even during the Pleistocene interglacials Nebraska must have been near the northern limit of their range.

A Guide To What, How, Why And Why Not Of Psi, Vernon Williams, Robert Fuller, David Joseph

Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), or Keller Plan, Materials

The production and distribution of the film, Personalized System of Instruction: An Alternative, © 1973, by the Instructional Media Center of the University of Nebraska Lincoln was met with considerable interest among academics in the USA. A one time the film lending library had 24 copies of the film that were is almost continuous distribution in the early 1970s.

The film lead viewers to ask many questions and the Instructional Media Center got many requests for additional information. In response to that need, Vernon Williams of the Teaching and Learning Center and Professors Robert Fuller and David Joseph of …

Response Of Nuclear Emulsions To Ionizing Radiations, Robert Katz, F. E. Pinkerton Jan 1975

Response Of Nuclear Emulsions To Ionizing Radiations, Robert Katz, F. E. Pinkerton

Robert Katz Publications

Heavy ion tracks in Ilford K-2 emulsion are simulated with a computer program that makes use of the delta-ray theory of track structure, and the special assumption that the response of the emulsion to gamma-rays is 8-or-more hit. The Ilford K-series of nuclear emulsions is produced from a parent stock called K.0 emulsion, sensitized to become K.1 to K.5, and desensitized to become K–1 to K–3. Our simulations demonstrate that the emulsions K.5 through K.0 to K-1 are 1-or-more hit detectors, while K-2 is an 8-or-more hit detector. We have no data for K-3 emulsion. It would appear that emulsions …

Process Control Of Activated Sludge Treatment, Phase Ii, Richard I. Kermode, Robert W. J. Brett, Joseph D. Pault Jr. Jan 1975

Process Control Of Activated Sludge Treatment, Phase Ii, Richard I. Kermode, Robert W. J. Brett, Joseph D. Pault Jr.

KWRRI Research Reports

Material balances on substrate and microorganisms were derived in conjunction with various mixing configurations thought to accurately describe the activated sludge process. These models include the completely mixed with bypass, plug flow, and plug flow with bypass. Two sets of kinetic mechanisms for substrate utilization and bacterial growth were employed.

A feed forward controller was designed from linear approximations of the material balances derived in the completely mixed with bypass mixing model. Utilizing frequency response methods, the controller was found essentially identical to a completely mixed modeled controller developed in a prior investigation.

Through computer simulation the controller's effectiveness was …

Stochastic Simulation Of Daily Rainfall, David M. Allen, C. T. Haan, Don Linton, Jim Street, David Jordan Jan 1975

Stochastic Simulation Of Daily Rainfall, David M. Allen, C. T. Haan, Don Linton, Jim Street, David Jordan

KWRRI Research Reports

The design of many water resources projects requires knowledge of possible long-term rainfall patterns. In this project a stochastic model based on a first order Markov chain was developed to simulate daily rainfall at a point. The model is applicable to any point in Kentucky (and other areas with similar rainfall patterns).

The model in its present form is useful in providing rainfall inputs into hydrologic models for designing water supply facilities and other water resources systems. The model uses historical rainfall data to estimate the Markov transitional probabilities. A separate matrix is estimated for each month of the year. …

Sensitivity Of Vertebrate Embryos To Heavy Metals As A Criterion Of Water Quality, Phase Ii: Bioassay Procedures Using Developmental Stages As Test Organisms, Wesley J. Birge, Albert G. Westerman, Jeffrey A. Black, Oliver W. Roberts Jan 1975

Roberts

KWRRI Research Reports

Chick, amphibian, and fish embryos were evaluated as bioassay and bioindicator organisms. Test procedures were developed by which embryonic stages may be used 1) in bioassay systems to evaluate the toxicity of particular metallic or metal-containing trace contaminants, and 20 as bioindicators to monitor the quality of natural water resources.

A bioassay technique was devised in which metallic toxicants were administered to chick embryos by "needle tract" injection into the yolk sac. This provided more uniform distribution of test metals throughout the yolk mass than can be obtained by conventional yolk sac injection methods, and gave more sensitivity and uniformity …

Interactions Of Rhenium(V) Chloride And Oxotrichlorobis(Triphenlyphosphine)Rhenium(V) With Selected Solvents, Paul Luther Holm Jan 1975

Interactions Of Rhenium(V) Chloride And Oxotrichlorobis(Triphenlyphosphine)Rhenium(V) With Selected Solvents, Paul Luther Holm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the solution interactions of rhenium(V) chloride and oxotrichlorobis(triphenylphosphine)rhenium(V) in a continuation of studies of rhenium(V) chemistry. These goals were accomplished using vacuum line and Schlenk tube techniques. As a result of this work, rhenium(V) chloride was found to dissolve with reaction in 1, 4-dioxane, diethyl ether and acetone. There was only a very small amount of rhenium(V) chloride which dissolved in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and cyclohexane. Part of what did dissolve was shown by electronic and infrared spectroscopy to be oxotetrachlororhenium(VI) which was present as an impurity in small amounts. Oxotetrachlororhenium(VI) reacts …

Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclopropyl Derivatives, Lailing Magdalene Soong Jan 1975

Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclopropyl Derivatives, Lailing Magdalene Soong

Masters Theses

A second order nucleophilic substitution reaction with retention of configuration is predicted by Ugi and co-workers if electrophiles such as cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, or cyclopentyl derivatives undergo substitution under conditions where the SN2 process is faster than the competing SN1 process.

A synthesis of both cis and trans-7-chlorobicyclo [4.1.0] heptane from olefin and dichlorocarbene is described. The compound, bicyclo [4.1.0] heptylpyridine [bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediiminato] cobalt(III), which contains an alkylcobalt σ-bond, is obtained from the reaction of pyridine [bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediiminato] cobalt(I) and 7-chlorobicyclo [4.1.0] heptane. The great light sensitivity of this compound has prevented its isolation in purity sufficient for nmr …

Occurrence Of The Puma, Felis Concolor, From Svendsen Cave, Marion County, Arkansas, William L. Puckette

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A partial skeleton including fragmental skull and mandibles of the puma, Felis concolor, was recovered from Svendsen Cave, Marion County, Arkansas. The remains are thought to be of Late Pleistocene (Wisconsin) or Sub-recent age. Fossil records of the puma are rare and only one other Pleistocene or Sub-recent site in Arkansas, Conard Fissure, has yielded remains which could be assigned to this large felid.

Reactions Of Tungsten Carbonyl Complexes Containing Diphenylvinylphosphine, George S. Leotsakos Jan 1975

Reactions Of Tungsten Carbonyl Complexes Containing Diphenylvinylphosphine, George S. Leotsakos

Masters Theses

A new synthetic route for the production of the tungsten carbonyl complex (OC)5WPPh2CH2CH2PPh2 has been discovered. It has been found that lithiumdiphenylphosphide reacts with diphenylvinylphosphinepentacarbonyltungsten(0) in tetrahydrofuran to produce upon hydrolysis a good yield of the pentacarbonyl product […]. No evidence for the formation of secondary products was noted nor was there evidence for preferential attack of the carbonyl group by LiPPh2 to form a carbene complex.

Diphenylvinylphosphinepentacarbonyltungsten(0) (mp 62-64°C), was prepared for the first time by two different methods.

I. Displacement of aniline from anilinepentacarbonyltungsten(0) complex with diphenylvinylphosphine.

II. …

These birds adapt well to suitable habitat, and you can play an important part in bringing the wood duck to locations where they do not now nest. For groups or individuals who are willing to expend the effort necessary to undertake a wood duck restoration project anti see it to completion, it is an exceptional gift from today's generation to those of decades and centuries to come. Many areas in Nebraska provide suitable wood duck habitat, but do not have a …

A Geo-Marine Informational System For Coastal Zone Management, Stella Maris A. Vallejo Jan 1975

A Geo-Marine Informational System For Coastal Zone Management, Stella Maris A. Vallejo

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to present a system analysis for the evaluation and interpretation of information on coastal zone management. We understand by system analysis the consideration of a complex made by related parts, and not merely a totally of parts, where the significance of one thing depends on its relationship with the others. Based on this criteria of interconnections between phenomena, we assume, we are going to give the coastal zone a treatment of a system and in this way impose a correlative statement to the information related to this area. This system approach for the information …

Metamagnetic Behavior Of Linear Chain Pyridine Compounds: Co(Pyridine)2Cl2, Fe(Pyridine)2Cl2, Fe(Pyridine)2(Ncs)2 And Ni(Pyridine)2Cl2, S. Foner, R. B. Frankel, W. M. Reiff, B. F. Little, G. J. Long

Physics

Magnetic phase transitions in the pyridine (pyr) compounds Co(pyr)2Cl2, Fe(pyr)2Cl2, Fe(pyr)2(NCS)2 and Ni(pyr)2Cl2 have been observed at applied magnetic fields of not, vert, similar0.7, 0.7, 1.1 and 2.7 kG respectively. These low field phase transitions are observed in the Fe and Ni compounds at T = 4.2 K, and in the Co compound at T < 3K, and are consistent with metamagnetic behavior. Magnetic saturation is not achieved in any of these compounds for fields of 60 kG, reflecting high anisotropy.
