Although marine burrows of unusually large dimensions have long been known in certain areas, they are probably much more widespread in the rock record than is generally recognized. Such burrows constitute a heterogeneous group, having little in common other than "exceptional" size. Yet their size alone unites them in difficulty of interpretation: e.g., densely spaced-dwelling burrows of combined dwelling-escape burrows as much as 12 cm in diameter and 5 m long; vertical dwelling burrows only 0.5 cm in diameter but up to 9 m long; possible escape structures as much as 24 cm in diameter and 3 m long, subsequently …

Samples from tributaries draining known mineralized areas contain considerably more lead than those from the main stream. The unique sediments (i.e. lead rich) from the tributaries are quickly diluted in the main stream to background levels. The lead content of the sediments from the tributaries apparently is controlled by the presence of lead-rich clasts. Sorption of lead by iron oxide coating grains is more significant in the main stream because the unique clasts are diluted. The mineralization also increases zinc and cadmium levels in the sediments. The concentration of calcium is controlled largely by the presence of limestone, whereas the …

St. virei has been bred in the laboratory for many years (1960-1974). Most of the St.v.hussoni were captured in karstic waters, near the Moulis subterranean laboratory. Some St.v.virei from the Padirac sink-hole; St.v.buchneri from Cantabrian caves; St.v.boui and St.v.virei from phreatic waters; and St.buili and St.breuili have also been bred. Since Stenasellids are unable to swim, very low aquariums are used, with a bed of cave clay, some calcareous stones, dead wood and dead elm tree leaves. Little depth of water is necessary. Stenasellus was originally carnivorous, being able to capture and devour living prey, such as Chironomid larvae, but …

The purpose of this study is to compare the learning and attitudinal changes that took place in a college introductory physical geology class between a self-paced method of instruction called the Keller Plan and the conventional lecture-laboratory method.

The sample population was 56 students enrolled in Earth Science 120, an introductory physical geology course at Minot State College ·~ during the fall quarter, 1973. An experimental section of 20 students experienced the Keller Plan treatment and two control groups consisting of 18 students each received the conventional method of instruction.

Southwestern McLean County is an area characterized by glacial topography and glacially-modified bedrock topography, with limited exposures of bedrock. Outcropping bedrock formations include the Cannonball, Tongue River, and Sentinel Butte Formations, all in the Fort Union Group of Paleocene age.

The Cannonball Formation crops out only in the southeastern part of the area studied (at Washburn), where 18 feet of laminated, gray-brown sandy mudstone is exposed. A yellow-brown, cross-bedded sand unit directly overlies the mudstone. I have tentatively selected the base of this sand unit, which is present in the subsurface throughout southwestern McLean County and reaches thicknesses of more …

The importance of eolian deposition in coastal areas is clearly demonstrated by the size and bulk of coastal sand dunes in many of these areas. The dune fields of Coos Bay, Oregon (Fig. :1), the southern end of Lake Michigan (Fig. 2) and the Cape Cod dune fields southeast of Provincetown (Fig. 3) and on Sandy Neck (Fig. 4) are just a few outstanding examples. Smaller sand dune accumulations are a:1:1 integral part of almost all depositional coasts.
