An Application Of "Storm" Mathematical Modeling For Evaluation Of Nonpoint Source Water Pollution For A Nonurban Watershed, John T. Izzo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Today, the engineer is faced with the task of predicting and evaluating the extent of the Nonpoint Sources that pollute our waterways. A mathematical model may be an extremely useful tool in helping the engineer solve problems in the area of water resources. During the course of this investigation, a literature survey related to the Econlockhatchee River Basin and to the "STORM" mathematical modeling technique for runoff evaluation has been conducted. The latter part of this report deals with an application of the "STORM" mathematical model for predicting quantity and quality of surface runoff for the Econlockhatchee River Basin located …

Plating Wastewater Management, Earl Kenneth Ossorio Jan 1975

Plating Wastewater Management, Earl Kenneth Ossorio

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of existing methods of management, treatment and disposal of water and wastewater effluents at a large aerospace facility (Martin Marietta Aerospace) in Central Florida. Water consumption and handling were evaluated, with emphasis being placed on the handling of plating wastes, since they are the main contributor of industrial wastewater pollutants at the facility. The flow, storage, and treatment of the plating wastes were studied. Literature concerning plating wastes was surveyed to determine the latest "state of the art" on handling of plating pollutants. Then, the "state of the art" processes were compared with the existing processes …

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell Jan 1975

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report is intended to examine the ecological changes due to mixing in shallow water bodies. Physical, chemical, and biological changes are reported in literature. A literature search revealed the range of mixing nodes or processes. Assessment of ecological changes due to mixing by boating activities had been evaluated in a research project supported by the environmental Protection Agency and conducted at Florida Technological University. The examination of changes due to mechanical mixing on lake ecology simulated in fifty-five gallon drums indicated the sensitivity of such parameters as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, conductivity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Problems of reproducibility …

Biquadratic Exchange And First-Order Ferromagnetic Phase Transitions, Harry A. Brown Jan 1975

Biquadratic Exchange And First-Order Ferromagnetic Phase Transitions, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have calculated some properties of a ferromagnet using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a biquadratic exchange term added. The constant-coupling approximation was employed. If the strength of the biquadratic exchange relative to the bilinear is given by a dimensionless parameter α, there is a critical value αc at which the phase transition changes character from second order for αα>αc. The spontaneous magnetization, the exchange energy, and the spin-correlation function show discontinuous jumps at α=αc and unstable behavior for α>αc. © 1975 The American Physical Society.

Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclobutyl Derivatives, Hao Ku Jan 1975

Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclobutyl Derivatives, Hao Ku

Masters Theses

A study was initiated on the hypothesis, by Ugi and co-workers, that cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, and cyclopentyl electrophiles might under go nucleophilic substitution reactions with retention of configuration.

The synthesis of benzocyclobutenol and 2-phenylcyclobutyl tosylate is described. The reactions of these tosylates with cobalt(I) "supernucleophiles" gave low yields of products which have not been purified sufficiently for assignment of stereochemistry.

Reaction of cyclopentyl tosylate and phenylethyl tosylate with the "supernucleophiles" cobaloxime(I) and cobalt(salen)(I) is discussed for the advance of future work.

Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M G. Mason Jan 1975

Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M G. Mason

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, the farmer needs some understanding of how these factors work.

Thermal Instability In Supernova Shells, R. Mccray, R. F. Stein, Menas Kafatos Jan 1975

Thermal Instability In Supernova Shells, R. Mccray, R. F. Stein, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Thermal instability in the radiative cooling region behind a shock will cause upstream density fluctuations to collapse into thin sheets aligned parallel to the shock front. A linearized calculation demonstrates the development of this instability. Thermal conduction suppresses the development of small-scale perturbations. Estimates of the scale sizes for the fully developed condensations agree roughly with the scale sizes of fine structure observed in supernova shells such as the Cygnus Loop.

A Model Of Data Structures Commonly Used In Programming Languages And Data Base Management Systems, William L. Honig Jan 1975

A Model Of Data Structures Commonly Used In Programming Languages And Data Base Management Systems, William L. Honig

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This thesis claims that contemporary data structures can be understood and studied with an intelligible model which captures their essential differences and similarities and, further, that such a model is an appropriate basis for a top-down description method for data structures. To define the scope of the model, the data structures included in 21 programming languages and data base management systems have been tabulated. Each individual data structure is illustrated with an example drawn from a published paper or a working computer program. This mélange of data structures is divided into three classes (aggregates, associations , and files) and each …

On The Existence Of Solutions Of Differential Equations And Zeros Of Operators In K-Banach Spaces, Evin Bronson, R. L. Tennison, A. Richard Mitchell Jan 1975

On The Existence Of Solutions Of Differential Equations And Zeros Of Operators In K-Banach Spaces, Evin Bronson, R. L. Tennison, A. Richard Mitchell

Mathematics Technical Papers

The theory of existence of solutions of differential equations in a Banach space employing norm as a measure is sufficiently well known [5, 6, 8, 9]. Also utilizing this theory one can prove the existence of zeros of operators [2, 7, 8, 9, 11]. The advantage of using a generalized norm as a candidate in discussing the qualitative theory of differential equations is also known [1]. These thoughts naturally lead to the use of cone-valued norms as a measure since this approach unifies the existing theories as well as offers a more flexible mechanism for applications. In this paper, we …

Fixed Point Theorms Of Operators With Ppf Dependence In Banach Spaces, Stephen R. Bernfeld Jan 1975

Fixed Point Theorms Of Operators With Ppf Dependence In Banach Spaces, Stephen R. Bernfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

In this paper we develop a theory of fixed points of a nonlinear operator, T, whose domain is the Banach space of continuous functions defined on an interval [a,b] with range in a Banach space E denoted by [see pdf for notation] and the range of the nonlinear operator T is in E. As we shall see delay differential equations form an important example of such a nonlinear operator. We shall obtain analogues of the contraction mapping principle, Krasnoselskii's fixed point theorem as well as a result on the convergence of iterations of quasi-nonexpansive mappings.

Sources Of Excitation Of The Interstellar Gas And Galactic Structure, J. J. Cowan, Menas Kafatos, W. K. Rose

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The excitation of the interstellar gas. is discussed in the light of recent evidence from γ-ray, molecular, and 21-cm line observations. Previous studies of the excitation of the interstellar gas have not taken into account the substantial density contrast that exists between spiral arms and interarm regions. We examine the role played by the galactic distribution of three sources of excitation (supernovae, OB stars, and ultraviolet stars) in determining the physical state of the interstellar gas in arm and interarm regions.

The Intramolecular Torsional Potential And Dielectric Properties Of 2,3-Butanedione, Gevert H. Meyer Jan 1975

The Intramolecular Torsional Potential And Dielectric Properties Of 2,3-Butanedione, Gevert H. Meyer

Masters Theses

Dipole moment measurements have been carried out on 2,3-butanedione in solution, pure liquid, and the vapor phase. A dipole moment of 1.03 ± .01 Debye was observed for dilute solutions of 2,3-butanedione in carbon tetrachloride. Pure liquid samples exhibit an anomalous dipole of 1.56 ± .01 Debye. The following results were obtained for vapor phase measurements: 1.04, 1.07, 1.08, 1.11, and 1.17 ± .01 Debye at 310.15, 350.15, 370.15, 431.70 and 472.10 ± .02°K respectively.

The acetyl torsional potential was characterized from the observed temperature dependence of dipole moment. This torsional mode was described by a two-parameter potential function: V(Ø) …

Zwitterionic Carbonyl Halide Complexes Of Tungsten, Dragoslav Marcovich Jan 1975

Zwitterionic Carbonyl Halide Complexes Of Tungsten, Dragoslav Marcovich

Masters Theses

The first carbonyl halide zwitterionic complexes have been synthesized and are of the type cis- (OC)4XWPPh2(CH2)nPPh2R in which X is Cl, Br, or I, n is 1 or 2, and R is an alkyl group. The complexes were prepared by the reaction […]. The temperature of the reaction must be carefully controlled since the decomposition point of the product is only 10°C higher than that of the reactant.

The zwitterionic complexes are sensitive to light in solution but are insensitive to light in the solid state. Unlike carbonyl halide complexes of the …
