Semiclassical Calculation Of Regge Poles, John B. Delos, C. E. Carlson Jan 1975

Semiclassical Calculation Of Regge Poles, John B. Delos, C. E. Carlson

Arts & Sciences Articles

We have calculated the locations of the Regge poles for an actual interatomic potential by following the semiclassical formulation. For negative energies, this formulation is equivalent to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition. For positive energies there are three complex turning points; use of linear and parabolic connection formulas yields a semiclassical quantization condition for the poles. The poles are found to lie symmetrically along lines in the first and third quadrants of the angular-momentum plane. The locations of the poles at a given energy and the motion of these poles as the energy changes are presented. Remler has shown that Regge …

Petrology And Geochemistry Of The Killdeer Carbonates, John J. Delimata Jan 1975

Petrology And Geochemistry Of The Killdeer Carbonates, John J. Delimata

Theses and Dissertations

The strata of the proposed Killdeer Formation (Stone, W. J., 1972) in the Killdeer Mountains of Dunn County, North Dakota is composed of a sequence of tuffaceous, calcareous, dolomitized and silicified flat lying sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. It is the purpose of this report to describe and integrate the petrology and geochemistry of these sediments.

Fieldwork was conducted during the summer of 1972. Forty-three stratigraphic sections were measured and representative samples of each were collected for further analysis. Seven section were selected as representative of the area, and samples from these were studied in thin section with the petrographic …

Paleomagnetism Of The San Juan Volcanic Field, Southwestern Colorado, Steven Douglas Sheriff Jan 1975

Paleomagnetism Of The San Juan Volcanic Field, Southwestern Colorado, Steven Douglas Sheriff

WWU Graduate School Collection

Geologic Setting

The San Juan volcanic field of southwestern Colorado consists of 2.5 X 104 km2 of volcanic rocks ranging in age from early Oligocene to Pliocene. Major volcanic activity in the San Juan field began about 35 million years ago with widespread eruption of rhyodacitic to andesitic lavas from scattered volcanic centers (Lipman and others, 1970). This type of volcanism peaked about 33 million years ago and then began to decline. About 30 million years ago, volcanic activity once again increased in the area. This time the eruptions were ash flows of intermediate to felsic composition. The …

Three New Troglobitic Asellids From Western North America (Crustaces: Isopoda: Asellidae), Thomas E. Bowman

International Journal of Speleology

Fleming’s arguments (1973) for reducing Conasellus to a synonym of Asellus are considered inadequate, but the name Conasellus is replaced by its senior synonym Caecidotea. Two new troglobitic species of Caecidotea are described, C. chiapas from caves in Chiapas, Mexico, and C. sequoiae from Liburn Cave, Tulare County, California. Asellus califomicus is reported from springs in Napa and Santa Clara Counties; the male pleopod 2 is redescribed, and the species is assigned to the subgenus Phreatoasellus. A new genus and species, Salmasellus steganothrix, is described from Horseshoe Lake, Alberta, Canada.

The Ecology Of A Predaceous Troglobitic Beetle, Neaphaenops Tellkampfii (Coleoptera: Carabidae, Trechinae) Ii. Adult Seasonality, Feeding And Recruitment, Russell M. Norton, Thomas C. Kane, Thomas L. Poulson

International Journal of Speleology

In deep cave areas with loose substrate and sufficient moisture, the life history of Neaphaenops tellkampfii (Coleoptera: Carabidae, Trechinae) is synchronized with the seasonal pattern of its primary food sources, the eggs and first instar nymphs of the cave cricket Hadenoecus subterraneus (Orthoptera Gryllacridoidea, Rhaphidophoridae). Neaphaenops reproduction coincides with an order of magnitude increase in Hadenoecus egg input in the spring. Our 46 observations of predation by Neaphaenops suggest some switching to other cave animals as cricket egg and first instar nymph densities decrease during the summer. Neaphaenops life history in areas of Hadenoecus egg input is as follows: (1) …

Distribution Of Indiana Cavernicolous Crayfishes And Their Ecto-Commensal Ostracods, H. H. Hobbs Iii

International Journal of Speleology

Six species and subspecies of crayfishes and four species of entocytherid ostracods are known to inhabit the subterranean streams of southern Indiana. Cambarus (E.) Iaevis (troglophile) appears to be the most widely distributed crayfish and occurs in both karst areas within the State. The troglobite, Orconectes inermis (2 subspecies), is restricted to the larger karst area in solution cavities of Mississippian carbonate rocks. The remaining crayfishes, Orconectes immunis, Orconectes propinquus and Orconectes sloanii, are not common inhabitants of cave waters and are probably trogloxenes. All of the crayfishes except O. sloanii were found to host at least one …

Remplissages Karstiques Au Tunnel De La Clusette, Jean Meia, Michel Pochon Jan 1975

Remplissages Karstiques Au Tunnel De La Clusette, Jean Meia, Michel Pochon

International Journal of Speleology

The piercing of a road tunnel in the flank of a limestone (Malm) anticline in the Neuchâtel Jura uncovered karstic forms transformed for the most part, by decarbonated soils. Mineralogical analysis of these latter, through the use of X-ray diffraction, reveals a great analogy with the surface soils. At more than 200 meters depth, the same allochtone mineralogical suite of aeolian origin which constitutes the largest part of the soils of the High Jura Mountains in Switzerland, is found: an abundance of ferriferous chlorite, and of quartz, plagioclase and potassic feldspar. The various factors favouring this deep infiltration are discussed.

Versuche Zur Erfassung Der Vertikalen Verteilung Von Organismen Und Chemischen Substanzen Im Grundwasser Von Talauen Und Terrassen; Methoden Und Erste Befunde, Siegfried Husmann

International Journal of Speleology

In the alluvial ground of the river Fulda valley and in the diluvial terrace of the river Weser assortments of tubes of various lengths were sunk into sandy and gravely underground to bring to light groundwater of different depths. The installation of these groundwater pump stations was effectuated by two different methods: 1. with the aid of an apparatus for bringing down bore-holes, 2. by ramming in the pump tubes with the aid of a pneumatic hammer. The first biological and chemical investigations in these subterranean water research stations indicated that the vertical distribution of groundwater organisms and chemical substances …

The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter Jan 1975

The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter

Honors Papers

The city of Quezaltenango is located in southwestern Guatemala, approximately 100 kilometers WNW of Guatemala City. The volcanic features of this area represent a portion of the Central American Quaternary volcanic chain. This chain seems to be controlled by the underthrusting of the Cocos plate beneath the Americas and Caribbean plates, which occurs in the Middle American trench. The two overriding plates, which in the Caribbean finds topographical expression in the Cayman Trough. Molnar and Skyes have suggested that faults in eastern Guatemala may represent the continental extension of the transform. Stoiber and Carr feel that this plate boundary is …

Stratigraphy Of Offshore Sediment Of Lake Agassiz, North Dakota, Michael B. Arndt Jan 1975

Stratigraphy Of Offshore Sediment Of Lake Agassiz, North Dakota, Michael B. Arndt

Theses and Dissertations

Lake Agassiz occupied the Red River Valley between about 13,800 and 9,000 years ago. The Late Wisconsinan ice sheet that covered the Red River Valley retreated far enough to expose the drainage divide in northern South Dakota and south-central Minnesota sometime after 14,000 B.P. and meltwater ponded behind this divide in Richland County. Before 13,800 the ice readvanced over this area and then retreated again. As the ice margin retreated northward, deposition of the Argusville and Wylie Formations took place. Sometime before 12,800 the ice advanced again into the Red River Valley as far as Traill County; the terminus of …

Glacial Stratigraphy Of Northeastern North Dakota, Howard Hobbs Jan 1975

Glacial Stratigraphy Of Northeastern North Dakota, Howard Hobbs

Theses and Dissertations

Seven lithostratigraphic units (formations} composed dominantly of glacial sediment have been recognized in northeastern North Dakota. Three formations, the Falconer Formation (Harris and others, 1974}, the Dahlen, and Gardar Formations (Salomon, 1975). Have been previously recognized. Four formations, the Hansboro, Vang, Tiber and Cando Formations are newly recognized. Uncorrelated units of glacial sediment are described but not named. The formations are differentiated and correlated primarily by the proportion of crystalline (igneous and metamorphic rock fragments), carbonate, and shale grains in the coarse sand fraction (1 to 2 mm) of the glacial sediment. The proportion of shale grains was. Found to …

The Historical Development Of Wasatch Trails In Salt Lake County, Clyde Brian Hardy Jan 1975

The Historical Development Of Wasatch Trails In Salt Lake County, Clyde Brian Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

In this study investigation was made concerning the etiology of the foot trails that thread their way through Wasatch Forest lands in Salt Lake county. The time delimitation was 1847 to 1975.

The origin of the majority of these trails dates back to the nineteenth century and is closely tied to the efforts of pioneers who labored to wrest a living from semi-arid land. Early lumbering, livestock operations, mining activities, water collection systems, and pioneer recreation all provided impetus for trail development. In a sense these trails are a kind of anthology of human endeavor.

Passing into the twentieth century …

Calico Rock Sandstone Member Of The Everton Formation (Ordovician), Northern Arkansas, Raymond W. Suhm Jan 1975

Calico Rock Sandstone Member Of The Everton Formation (Ordovician), Northern Arkansas, Raymond W. Suhm

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Surface and subsurface stratigraphic studies in northeastern Arkansas show the Calico Rock Sandstone (Middle Ordovician) to be a lobate sand body up to 200 ft thick. The environment of deposition is considered from a study of grain characteristics, ripple marks, subjacent and superjacent units and unpublished isopachous maps. The data indicate the Calico Rock Sandstone formed in a transgressing Everton sea as a barrier island and near shore sand complex. The quartz sand was derived from a northern source and was distributed by southwestward flowing longshore currents.
