Pole Stars Of Other Planets, Paul C. Sharrah

The north celestial pole of the Earth and the other planets is discussed. Right ascension and declination information on the location of the poles on the celestial sphere is summarized. The name of the brightest visible star near each pole is given and the special case of Uranus is discussed.

Gas Phase Hydrogen Bonding Infrared Studies Of Four Simple Alcohols, Lawrence John Anderson

The purpose of this study was to develop methods for studying gas phase hydrogen bonding and to obtain evidence of the gas phase self association of methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and 1-propanol. A gas sample transfer manifold was designed and constructed. The gas -1 8 -1 phase infrared spectra from 3050 cm to 3800 cm of methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and 1-propanol were examined at low and saturated pressures at approximately 4o0 c. The measured integrated absorption areas of the methanol spectra were compared to areas calculated from results found in the literature. The areas were found to be in reasonable agreement …

Removal Of Phosphorus From Static Sewage Effluent By Waterhyacinth, W Harold Ornes

Waterhyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] was grown in static sewage effluent during May to July 1974 in outdoor concrete containers with a capacity of 760 liters and a surface area of 1.66 m². The plants were removed weekly from one-half of the surface area of the containers during 5-wk growth periods. Tissue phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N), plant productivity, and some parameters of water quality were measured. A maximum uptake of 5,500 µg of P/g dry weight of plant material occurred when the level of orthophosphate phosphorus (available P) in the effluent was 1.1 µg/ml. Phosphorus in the effluent was …

Mössbauer spectroscopy of the synthetic tetramers [Fe₄S₄(SR)₄]^2- (R = alkyl, aryl) and the corresponding trianions obtained by one-electron reduction, when compared with available data for 4-Fe and 8-Fe iron-sulfur proteins, shows that these tetramers are electronic analogs of the active sites of the proteins.

The isotropic contact NMR shifts of the coordinated cis and tram methanol methyl proton resonances of a series of Co(CH30H)5X2+ complexes were measured, where the ligand X was pyridine, /I- and a-picoline, DMF, DMSO, acetonitrile, and water. The question of how to separate the observed shifts into their respective Fermi contact and dipolar (pseudocontact) contributions was examined in detail with the result that a new procedure for carrying out the separation was proposed. The dipolar shifts for these complexes were found to vary widely, with the acetonitrile complex exhibiting the largest dipolar shift. For the DMSO and water complexes the …

A series of experiments, involving molten magnesium silicate spherules that were subjected to high initial cooling rates and allowed to nucleate at high temperatures (985-1350°C), were performed so as to compare their thermal histories to the resulting internal features. Such comparisons could be used to decipher the thermal history of chondrules and the conditions surrounding their formation based on their mineralogy, crystal morphology, and overall texture. Various features of the spherules were correlated with the initial high cooling rate process, nucleation temperature, and the maximum temperature attained during the recalescance to demonstrate the restrictions resulting from or their sensitivities to …

Orbicular rock located on the west side of the Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, at W. long. 106° 29' 30", N. lat. 35° 13' 04", was first reported by Fitzsimmons (1966). Recently Thompson and Giles (1974) published a paper describing.three types of orbicular rock in the locality which they believed to have been formed by a metasomatic process. Without knowledge of the work of Thompson and Giles, this thesis was initiated as a detailed field, petrographic, geochemical and geochronologic study of these orbicular rocks.

The high spin complex Fe(II) (N, N'-dicyclohexylthiourea)₆(ClO₄)₆ exists in two forms which only differ in the distortion from octahedral symmetry of the environment of the Fe ion. Thermodynamic data for the transformation from one form to the other as obtained from Mössbauer spectroscopy are presented and a method to derive kinetic parameters is described.

An elaboration on the transitivity system network introduced by M. A. K. Halliday is developed. This extension consists of a separate feature system network for the participant role of “beneficiary”. The formulation of the proposed grammar rules to conjoin this network and Halliday's is facilitated by building up the transitivity network to describe "systemically” and uniquely each type of benefactive and range clause presented by Halliday. Systemic descriptions of these clauses are given as examples throughout the discussion.

ABSTRACT

Systematic data has recently been published on the compositions of major mineral phases in rocks of the tholeiitic, alkalic, and nephelinic suites from the island of Maui, Hawaii. The present study was initiated to provide similar data from the rocks of Molokai, Hawaii, from which the nature of interisland variations could be established. During the study, it became obvious that many of the rocks were unusual and so this study also provides information on the bulk rock, trace element, and mineral compositions of alkalic olivine basalts transitional to hawaiites and Sr-rich mugearites.

Some properties of esterases of the greater wax moth larvae, Galleria mellonela (L.), were examined and the enzymes partially purified. Several buffer systems were tried and it was found that tris buffer was most suitable. The tris buffer resulted in less hydrolysis of the acetylsalicylic acid. Esterase activity was determined with acetylsalicylic acid in tris buffer, pH = 7.85, 0.05 M. The enzymes were partially purified by combination of acetone powder preparations, ammonium sulfate precipitations and gel filtration.

A series of β- methyl-β-nitrostyrenes have been synthesized and subjected to ultraviolet irradiation. A new technique has been developed for synthesis of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and its derivatives by irradiation of the corresponding styrene. The yields of the oximes were almost quantitative [except 1-(p-nitrophynyl)-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and 1-(m-nitrophenyl)-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime]. It has been found that irradiation of the appropriate styrene is a very simple, efficient, and general procedure for the synthesis of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and a number of its derivatives. A number of derivatives of β- methyl-β-nitrostyrene (p-CH₃, p-Ch₃0, p-Cl, p-No₂, and m-NO₂) were irradiated. It was found that …
