Geology Of The Northern Part Of The Sierra Cuchillo, Socorro And Sierra Counties, New Mexico, Florian Maldonado

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The northern Sierra Cuchillo, Socorro and Sierra Counties, New Mexico is approximately 32 miles northwest of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The Sierra Cuchillo is a narrow fault-block range in the Basin-Range province and is a structurally high element west of the Rio Grande trough. It is bordered on the west by the Winston graben and the Black Range and on the east by Monticello graben and the San Mateo Mountains.

Permian rocks consist of the Yeso and San Andres Formation, with an aggregate thickness of 2100 ft (640 m). Upper Cretaceous rocks, 40 ft (10 m) thick, consist of …

Models For Estimating Psychiatric Bed Needs, Patricia A. Brenneman Dec 1974

Models For Estimating Psychiatric Bed Needs, Patricia A. Brenneman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Inland Counties Comprehensive Health Planning Council wished to estimate the psychiatric bed needs by type (such as state hospitals, board and care homes, etc.) in San Bernardino County from the distributions of patient arrivals and of lengths of stay. A statistical description of the system during 1973 was considered the first step toward estimating future bed needs. A computer simulation model using IBM's programming language General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) was developed and was found to be unsatisfactory.

Theorems were then developed for a statistical model, seeking to predict future bed needs. The most convenient of these theorems states that …

Hydraulic And Flow Studies Related To Sediment Transport, Kentucky River, Kentucky, Bruce R. Moore, Michael R. Short, Thomas Wachs Dec 1974

Hydraulic And Flow Studies Related To Sediment Transport, Kentucky River, Kentucky, Bruce R. Moore, Michael R. Short, Thomas Wachs

KWRRI Research Reports

This study related the conditions of flow and channel shape to distribution of sediment types in the Kentucky River. Seven distinct types of sediment association were delineated and these have a regular pattern of distribution influenced by the presence of navigation locks and dams. The most suitable locations for commercial extraction of bed material were clearly indicated and the variations of sand size delineated by the study. The irregular discharge pattern of the stream indicates potential problems in the disposal of solid waste pollutants.

A remeasurement of the dredge hole in the Ohio River indicated a continuation of the same …

A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell Dec 1974

A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell

KWRRI Research Reports

The mode of action of the algicide produced by Pandorina morum was examined by exposing Volvox globator and isolates spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified algicide preparation. Oxygen evolution of Volvox, whole chloroplasts and broken chloroplasts (minus the Calvin cycle),was reduced indicating that the algicide inhibits the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation that Pandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low molecular weight (probably below 100 mw). Field studies indicate that this algicide has tremendous potential as …

Public Access To The Beaches Of Connecticut, Don W. Oswalt Dec 1974

Public Access To The Beaches Of Connecticut, Don W. Oswalt

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Elements of the public of Connecticut are engaged in direct conflict against private and municipal property rights over the issue of increased public access to beaches of the state. In Connecticut, as well as the nation, definite solutions to the problem are slow to materialize. The public's right to the whole beach is being clarified by only a few states, while public access under common law remains a clouded issue nationwide. The research study I am proposing would examine in detail the legal issues involved, the state and federal legislative actions, geographical considerations, etc. I feel that the resulting collation …

Development And Preliminary Application Of Mathematical Models To The Weber Basin, W. J. Grenney, D. S. Bowles, M. D. Chambers, J. P. Riley Dec 1974

Development And Preliminary Application Of Mathematical Models To The Weber Basin, W. J. Grenney, D. S. Bowles, M. D. Chambers, J. P. Riley

Reports

The adoption of stream standards, whether for direct application or for the establishment of realistic effluent standards, creates a need to predict the impact of pollution loads on river water quality during critical flow periods or as the result of future user demands. Because of the complexity of aquatic systems, mathematical models are an excellent medium for bringing together the state-of-the-art knowledge from a variety of disciplines into a form which can be readily applied to practical problems. Applying a mathematical model to a river system has the added advantage of providing a structure for the systematic consideration of the …

Multiple Uses Of Utah Irrigation Canals: Cache County As A Case Study, James J. Kennedy, Komain Unhanand Dec 1974

Multiple Uses Of Utah Irrigation Canals: Cache County As A Case Study, James J. Kennedy, Komain Unhanand

Reports

Irrigation use is an obvious benefit of Utah canals that has been recognized for over 100 years. This study attempts to illustrate other, less obvious, uses. the major use examined was recreational, but canals are presently functioning as storm drainage systems and have potential for diverting flood crests in many river systems.

Recreational use of canals falls into two categories. There is passive use such as its landscape values, affects on creating shade and bird-wildlife habitat, etc., that is difficult to quantify but no less important than active canal use such as tubing, hiking, bank-play, bicycling, etc. We selected several …

Debris Slides And Related Flood Effects In The 4-5 August 1938 Webb Mountain Cloudburst: Some Past And Present Environmental Geomorphic Implications, Carl A. Koch Dec 1974

Debris Slides And Related Flood Effects In The 4-5 August 1938 Webb Mountain Cloudburst: Some Past And Present Environmental Geomorphic Implications, Carl A. Koch

Masters Theses

On the night of 4-5 August, 1938 a cloudburst occurred over Webb Mountain, Tennessee, that lasted three hours with a rainfall in excess of twelve inches. This sudden deluge caused considerable debris sliding and flooding which resulted in the loss of eight lives and extensive property damage in the narrow valleys below the slide area. Over 100 individual slide scars were identified in the study area, 40 of which occurred in the Matthew Creek watershed.

The debris slide movement is thought to have been initiated by sliding at the head of the scar, with the mass of moving rock, soil …

The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang Nov 1974

The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang

Dissertations and Theses

The object of this research was to develop an arsenic(V) selective electrode. The electrode is based on a solid state membrane prepared by pressing a precipitate of silver arsenate-silver sulfide into a pellet. After the electrode was made, experiments were designed to check for three general characteristics of the electrodes: dependence of potential on pH for constant arsenic(V) concentration; dependence of potential on arsenic(V) concentrations at constant pH and extent of interference due to phosphate and arsenic(III) ions. From these measurements, it was found that Ag2HAs04 was formed originally in the membranes containing a small fraction of …

Legal Symposium On Wetlands: An Executive Summary, Roger D. Anderson, David Garten, Ted Smolen Nov 1974

Legal Symposium On Wetlands: An Executive Summary, Roger D. Anderson, David Garten, Ted Smolen

Reports

In 1969 the Virginia Institute of Marine Science published a report stating that although marshlands represented only one-half of one percent of the total area of the state, 95 percent of Virginia 's annual harvest of sport and commercial fisheries were dependent to some degree upon these valuable wetlands . The report went on to urge some form of public control over these vital areas in order to relieve some of the pressures created by dredging, filling, diking and bulkheading.

Recognizing the need to address this issue, the 1971 General Assembly passed House Joint Resolution Number 60, creating a Wetlands …
