Measurable Choice And The Invariant Subspace Problem, Edward Azoff, Frank Gilfeather
Measurable Choice And The Invariant Subspace Problem, Edward Azoff, Frank Gilfeather
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
In [1], J. Dyer, A. Pedersen and P. Porcelli announced that an affirmative answer to the invariant subspace problem would imply that every reductive operator is normal. Their argument, outlined in [1], provides a striking application of direct integral theory. Moreover, this method leads to a general decomposition theory for reductive algebras which in turn illuminates the close relationship between the transitive and reductive algebra problems.
The main purpose of the present note is to provide a short proof of the technical portion of [1] : that invariant subspaces for the direct integrands of a decomposable operator can be assembled …

Powers Of The State Of Kentucky In Implementing An Effluent Tax As A Part Of An Interstate Ohio River Basin Water Pollution Control Program, Anita L. Morse, Edward Zeigler
KWRRI Research Reports
This report is intended to set forth some of the problems and solutions involved in financing and regulating water quality control. The purpose is to record some of the major problems confronting those who legislate water quality, those who espouse technological answers, and those who see the problem in terms of economic solutions. The limits placed by political and institutional constraints on solutions to these problems are frequently not understandable.
Within this report are contained separate investigations: a study of federal-interstate relations and the interstate compact; a study of Kentucky's common law approach to water rights; a study of financing …

A Socio-Economic Environmental Baseline Summary For The South Atlantic Region Between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina And Cape Canaveral, Florida Volume 1 : Physical Oceanography, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science
Reports
The paucity of oceanographic data on the continental shelf and in the estuaries south of Cape Hatteras, North carolina hinders attempts to document the oceanographic conditions. In general data are more available and conditions better understood in the estuaries than on the continental shelf.
The estuaries of the Southern Atlantic Bight have not been studied as extensively as the large embayments to the north. Generally the estuaries tend to be partially mixed since runoff and thus river flow is not great in these river systems. Both the distance the tidal effect is felt and the distance up the estuary that …

Restrictions On The Potential And Cross Section For Collisions Between Rigid Rotors, Louis Biolsi Jr.
Restrictions On The Potential And Cross Section For Collisions Between Rigid Rotors, Louis Biolsi Jr.
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
A restricted distorted-wave treatment of the total cross section when two rigid diatomic molecules with orbital and nuclear spin angular momenta collide is examined. There are certain restrictions on the intermolecular potential and on the possible combinations of the various quantum numbers. These restictions are examined for the lowest order nonspherical elastic and the lowest order inelastic contributions to the total cross section. The effects of degeneracy averaging and of collisions between indistinguishable molecules are also briefly examined.

A Socio-Economic Environmental Baseline Summary For The South Atlantic Region Between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina And Cape Canaveral, Florida Volume Ii : Climatology, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science
Reports
The geographic area covered in this report extends from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on the north, to Cape Canaveral, Florida, to the·south. Included within this area are portions of the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia. All or portions of thirty coastal counties are included within the study area.
Estuaries in this area tend to be partially mixed due to relatively low runoff per mile of coast. The proximity of the Gulf Stream to the continental shelf and the low runoff combine to cause the salinity of the coastal water to be somewhat higher than that of the coastal …
A Polynomial Dual Of Partitions, Jacob T. B. Beard, Ann D. Dorris
A Polynomial Dual Of Partitions, Jacob T. B. Beard, Ann D. Dorris
Mathematics Technical Papers
Let [see pdf for notation] be a non-negative integral polynomial. The polynomial P(x) is m-graphical, and a multi-graph G a realization of P(x), provided there exists a multi-graph G containing exactly P(1) points where [see pdf for notation] of these points have degree i for [see pdf for notation]. For multi-graphs G,H having polynomials P(x), Q(x) and number-theoretic partitions (degree sequences) [see pdf for notation], the usual product P(x)Q(x) is shown to be the polynomial of the Cartesian product [see pdf for notation], thus inducing a natural product [see pdf for notation] which extends that of juxtaposing integral multiple copies …
On The Method Of Vector Lyapunov Functions, V. Lakshmikantham
On The Method Of Vector Lyapunov Functions, V. Lakshmikantham
Mathematics Technical Papers
The method of vector Lyapunov functions consists of employing several Lyapunov-like functions and the theory of vectorial differential inequalities. This general comparison technic leads to a more flexible mechanism to study the qualitative properties of nonlinear differential systems. This method is also effective in discussing interconnected dynamical systems where a construction of a single Lyapunov function is difficult. However, an unpleasant fact in this approach is the requirement of quasimonotone property of the comparison system. An idea to get around this will be indicated which might be useful in applications. Also, an extension of this technic to abstract cones will …

Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn
Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A descriptive-comparative survey using content analysis of medical records has been done to determine the frequency with which emotional disorders are identified by medical personnel in the population hospitalized in small general hospitals in north-central Nebraska.
A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.
Each medical record that was reviewed has been placed in a category based on whether an emotional disorder was identified in it by the medical personnel, or whether it contained recorded behaviors that could indicate …
Prenatal Instruction Of Breast Feeding Mothers, Anita Berry
Prenatal Instruction Of Breast Feeding Mothers, Anita Berry
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This experimental study tested the effect of prenatal instruction on the success of a group of mothers who desired to breast feed their infants. It was hypothesized that mothers receiving information on how to nurse their infants, how to prevent complications and how to cope with common problems of breast feeding would have a higher success rate than those not so instructed.
Criteria for success was that the mothers would have an adequate supply of milk to meet the nutritional demands of their infant without supplementation, would have fewer and less severe complications, and would express a higher degree of …

Alumina-Catalyzed Cope Rearrangement, Paul Jhy-Shing Wang
Alumina-Catalyzed Cope Rearrangement, Paul Jhy-Shing Wang
Dissertations and Theses
The alumina-catalyzed Cope rearrangements of meso- and dl-3,4-diphenylhexa-1,5-diene were examined in detail, following up a preliminary observation by H. Berg at Portland State University. Commercial column-chromatography grade alumina was employed, and was further activated before use by heating at 650-700° for four hours.
Using a ratio of 20 mg of dl-3,4-diphenylhex-l,5-diene to 1 g of alumina in heptane, the Cope rearrangement was complete within 15 minutes at room temperature to give exclusively trans,trans-1,6-diphenylhexa-1,5-diene. This was identified.by melting point, infrared spectroscopy and vapor phase chromatography.
The catalyzed rearrangement of meso-3,4-diphenylhexa-l,5-diene was run using the same diene …
The Effects Of Pentachlorophenol On The Electrical Conductivity Of Lipid Bilayer Membranes, William Harvey Perman
The Effects Of Pentachlorophenol On The Electrical Conductivity Of Lipid Bilayer Membranes, William Harvey Perman
Dissertations and Theses
The effects of pentachlorophenol (PCP), a widely used pesticide, on the electrical characteristics of lipid bilayer membranes has been studied. When a small amount of PCP (even at a concentration of a few micromoles per liter) is present in the electrolytic solution surrounding the membrane, the electrical conductivity of the membrane significantly increases. The present work was concerned with detailed measurements of the changes in the conductivity caused by PCP under chemically controlled conditions. The experimental results were analyzed to determine the permanent species in the membrane, and an attempt was made to correlate the data with existing models of …

Spatially Varied Subcritical And Supercritical Flow In Gullies, T. Y. Kao
Spatially Varied Subcritical And Supercritical Flow In Gullies, T. Y. Kao
KWRRI Research Reports
The objective of this study was to investigate the phenomena of subcritical and supercritical spatially varied flow in rectangular expansions such as that in an erosion gully. Based on momentum and continuity principles, equations were developed to predict such flow phenomena. Computations of the water surface profiles for subcritical spatially varied flow were carried out by applying direct step numerical calculations. Because of the presence of standing waves, the method of characteristics was employed in the analytical analysis of the supercritical flow phenomena. Of primary importance in this study is the effect of varying amounts of lateral inflow rates. Other …

Analysis Of Unsteady Flow Toward Artesian Wells By Three-Dimensional Finite Elements, Yang H. Huang, Shen-Jyh Wu
Analysis Of Unsteady Flow Toward Artesian Wells By Three-Dimensional Finite Elements, Yang H. Huang, Shen-Jyh Wu
KWRRI Research Reports
A three-dimensional finite element computer program was developed for analyzing unsteady flow toward artesian wells. The program is designed especially for determining the drawdown around an artesian well penetrating fully or partially a nonhomogeneous and anisotropic aquifer of irregular shape and cross section. It can also be used as a general program for aquifer simulation and evaluation. A major advantage of the program lies in the minimum amount of input data required. By assuming the top and bottom boundaries of the aquifer as two arbitrary planes, the aquifer will be divided into six- or eight-node elements, and their nodal coordinates …
The Attack Of Hard And Soft Nucleophiles On 6-Methylsulfonyl-, 6-Methylsulfinyl-, And 6-Methylthioaminopteridines, William David Johnston
The Attack Of Hard And Soft Nucleophiles On 6-Methylsulfonyl-, 6-Methylsulfinyl-, And 6-Methylthioaminopteridines, William David Johnston
Theses and Dissertations
In an attempt to prepare 6-anilino and 6-benzylaminopteridines, 2,4,7-triamino-6-methylsulfonyl and 2,4,7-triamino-6-methylsulfinylpteridines were prepared and reacted with a number of benzylamines and aniline. These hard nucleophiles gave amine exchange products with no displacement at the 6 position. Aliphatic amines gave exchange in the 2,4-and 7-positions. The exchange occurring in the 7-position must be occurring by an AE mechanism. This is the first such exchange reported in a ring other than a 1,3-azine. Aniline gave no exchange product except in an acid catalyzed reaction, and then gave exchange in only the 2 and 4-positions. Numerous reactions on related substrates, are reported. Soft …
On The Reduction Of Many-Body Dielectric Theories To The Onsager Equation, John D. Ramshaw
On The Reduction Of Many-Body Dielectric Theories To The Onsager Equation, John D. Ramshaw
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
An approximate theory for the dielectric constant ℇ of a dense polar fluid was derived by Ramshaw, Schaefer, Waugh, and Deutch (RSWD). In the present article, the RSWD theory is generalized and made rigorous by another method of derivation. The result is a rigorous expression for ℇ which differs from the RSWD expression by the presence of a fluctuation term. Both the rigorous expression and the RSWD expression are then specialized to the Onsager model. It is found that the rigorous expression for ℇ reduces to the Onsager equation, but that the RSWD expression does not because the fluctuation term …
Thermodynamic Stability Constants Of Silver Bromide Complexes In Water And Water-Acetone Mixtures Determined By Ion-Selective Electrode Measurements, Arthur Lee Cummings
Thermodynamic Stability Constants Of Silver Bromide Complexes In Water And Water-Acetone Mixtures Determined By Ion-Selective Electrode Measurements, Arthur Lee Cummings
Theses and Dissertations
Thermodynamic equilibrium constants for silver(I) bromide complexes were determined by ion-selective membrane electrode potential measurements in water and in mixtures of water and acetone of approximately 5, 10 and 15 percent acetone by weight. Values of the solubility product constant were determined in each solvent system by calibration of a silver bromide membrane electrode with silver nitrate solutions and with sodium bromide solutions. Stability constants of silver(I) bromide complexes were determined using a silver ion-selective, silver sulfide membrane electrode in unsaturated solutions in which the formal concentrations of silver(I) and of bromide ranged from approximately I x 10-8 to 7 …
