Studies Of Certain Impacts Of Tropical Storm Agnes On The Chesapeake Bay And Its Tributaries - A Final Report On Activities, William J. Hargis Jr. Aug 1974

Studies Of Certain Impacts Of Tropical Storm Agnes On The Chesapeake Bay And Its Tributaries - A Final Report On Activities, William J. Hargis Jr.

Reports

In the summer of 1972 Hurricane Agnes, spawned over the Yucatan Peninsula, developed in full force in the Gulf of Mexico, bulled its way ashore in Western Florida (and Southeastern Alabama) and spent its fury in the interior. It arrived in the Middle-Atlantic States as an Extratropical Storm. At every stage it was disruptive and destructive.

In the Chesapeake Bay Drainage Basin, Agnes was particularly spectacular even though her wind velocities were markedly reduced. In particular, she poured vast amounts of rain on an already saturated land. In rapid succession the James, the Potomac and the Susquehanna were driven into …

An Alternate Solution To The Two-Dimensional Ising Model, B. Craig Meyers Aug 1974

An Alternate Solution To The Two-Dimensional Ising Model, B. Craig Meyers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An alternate solution for the two-dimensional Ising model in a zero external magnetic field is presented. Following Kaufman, the partition function is written as the trace of a certain matrix product. The trace can be evaluated by computing the determinant of a related matrix. The determinant is evaluated by finding the product of its eigenvalues; in the thermodynamic limit the result is equivalent to that found by Onsager.

Coastal Vegetational Communities Of The Two Texas Barrier Islands, Boca Chica And Brazos, Baltazar Cisneros

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Two Texas barrier islands, Boca Chica and Brazos, have unique coastal vegetational communities that may be Influenced by several environmental factors. These environmental factors include temperature, precipitation, wind speed, sunshine exposure, day length, and dune height. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the total number of coastal plant species per station, season, and year and to consider environmental factors that may significantly affect the number and pattern of coastal species. Coverage comparison between aerial and land sampling and aerial vegetational zonation was also considered.

Results indicated the presence of 21 angiosperm families and a total of 54 species. …

The Benthic Communities Of The Eastern Rocky Shore Areas Of Goshen Bay, Utah Lake, Thomas Whitney Toole Aug 1974

The Benthic Communities Of The Eastern Rocky Shore Areas Of Goshen Bay, Utah Lake, Thomas Whitney Toole

Theses and Dissertations

Information about the benthic macroinvertebrate populations along the eastern shore of Goshen Bay, Utah Lake, Utah, can be used, in part, to determine future management of the lake. In the project herein reported, cement artificial substrate samplers were used to sample two types of substrate: rubble and compacted calcareous tufa. Monthly samples were obtained from each type of substrate from March 1972 to May 1973. An amphipod, Hyalela azteca and a chironomid, Dicrotendipes fumidus were the dominant organisms in numbers and tiomass. Amphipod numbers were dependent upon the amount of algal standing crop. Elimination of this area could affect the …

Metabolism Of 3-Isopropyl-4h-2,1,3-Benzothiadiazin-4-(3h)-One-2,2-Dioxide (Bentazon) In Agitated And Non-Agitated Sediment, David Cortez Gutierrez Aug 1974

Metabolism Of 3-Isopropyl-4h-2,1,3-Benzothiadiazin-4-(3h)-One-2,2-Dioxide (Bentazon) In Agitated And Non-Agitated Sediment, David Cortez Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

Bentazon, (3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-l-2,2-dioxide) a new experimental herbicide, was studied under the effects of sterile and non-sterile conditions, 12 hours light: 12 hours dark and totally dark conditions, and agitated and non-agitated conditions in aquatic sediment. The effects of the different levels of BOD/COD values on the decomposition of Bentazon were studied. Photoperiod, sterility, and BOD/COD levels appeared to have no influence in the breakdown of Bentazon. Agitation-time interaction appeared to be the only factor that influenced the more rapid degradation of Bentazon. Bentazon was the major 14C-residue found in the water; it was followed by an unknown. The third major metabolite …

Part I. Catalytic Hydrocarbon Reforming By Technetium Catalysts.|Npart Ii.|Pacetone Azine And 3,5,5-Trimethyl-2-Pyrazoline Adducts Of Palladium Chloride, James Lynn Palmer Aug 1974

Part I. Catalytic Hydrocarbon Reforming By Technetium Catalysts.|Npart Ii.|Pacetone Azine And 3,5,5-Trimethyl-2-Pyrazoline Adducts Of Palladium Chloride, James Lynn Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

Technetium catalyzes hydrocarbon reforming reactions of dehydrocyclization, isomerization, hydrogenolysis, and coke formation. A kinetic equation was derived and E_a and A_o evaluated for dehydrocyclization of n-heptane, isomerization of n-pentane, and dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane and cyclohexane. The results were related to the metal, the form of the catalyst, catalyst support, and the deactivation of the catalyst. The effect of sulfur compounds was determined. No residual radioactivity in the product was observed. The ligands, acetone azine (AA) and 3,5,5-trimethyl-2- pyrazoline (Py), reacted with (C_6H_5CN)_2PdCl_2 to form adducts, L_2PdCl_2 and (LPdCl_2)_n. Their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods and some molecular weights determined. …

Probability Driven Heuristic Nets, Lynn Robert Carter Jul 1974

Probability Driven Heuristic Nets, Lynn Robert Carter

Dissertations and Theses

Let a probability driven switch be defined as a switch of three input paths and three output paths. The status of the input paths defines a probability for each output path (as to whether it will generate a signal or not.) One output path is linked to one input path, so the results of the switch at time t can affect the switch at time t+1. A switch so constructed can be defined (by the probabilities) to take on the function of the standard logic gates (AND, OR, …) A net constructed of these switches can be “taught” by …

Growth Line Analysis Of A Recent Scallop Population And It's [Sic] Potential For Paleoecology, John F. Dillon Jul 1974

Growth Line Analysis Of A Recent Scallop Population And It's [Sic] Potential For Paleoecology, John F. Dillon

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Periodic growth lines can be used to construct a record of variations in the growth rate of a fossil or recent shell. Because growth rate is largely dependent upon environmental conditions, such a record serves also as an indication of variations in the environment during the lifetime of the shell. Although the very presence of such variations is of some paleoecologic interest, the main potential of growth lines in paleoecology lies in an extension of this argument. This is the concept that the contemporaneity of fossil organisms could be tested by examining their growth rate records for similarities; these would …

A Petrologic And Quantitative Compositional Study Of Four Rocks From The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Jonathan A. Green Jul 1974

A Petrologic And Quantitative Compositional Study Of Four Rocks From The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Jonathan A. Green

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The composition of major mineral phases in four rocks from the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge, as determined by electron microprobe analysis and supplemented by additional mineralogic and petrographic study, have provided data for comparison with continental mafic assemblages. The compositional range of coexisting minerals in the samples: a nepheline-normative gabbro (teschenite), an olivine tholeiite, and two uralitized norites, is similar to the ranges of comparable continental suites. The teschenite contains pyroxene (Wo48-46 En37-23Fs15-31) with high amounts of CaO (20.3-22.2 wt %), Al2O3 (2.9-6.8 wt. %), and Ti02 (1.2-2.9 wt. %) characteristic of continental …

General Geodesic Motion In The Extended Kerr Manifold, Richard H. St. John Jul 1974

General Geodesic Motion In The Extended Kerr Manifold, Richard H. St. John

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The timelike and null geodesics in the Kerr metric describe important properties of the space surrounding a rotating black hole. The general characteristics of these geodesics, with an emphasis on those on the axis of symmetry and the equatorial plane, are found in this paper. On the axis of symmetry, the behavior of all timelike and null geodesics is completely described. The accessibility of various spaces added for geodesic completeness in the extended manifold is found by making local observations of geodesics in one coordinate patch from geodesics in another. The analysis on the equatorial plane shows that for a …

The European Economic Community: Example Of Regionalization Of The Sea?, B. Deniaux Jul 1974

The European Economic Community: Example Of Regionalization Of The Sea?, B. Deniaux

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The European Law and power has not such a world-wide application nowadays, and it is rather against the rules created by the old European order that the nations formed during the second part of this century have begun a rebellion process. One can address the following questions: what exactly is nowadays the action of the European Community at sea: is there a common policy of the common Market toward marine related problems? If there is one, what is the actual impact of this policy at the international level, and especially these days, in regards of the Law of the Sea …

On The Redundancy Of Monotony Assumption, V. Lakshmikantham Jul 1974

On The Redundancy Of Monotony Assumption, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

It is well known that all the results in integral inequalities of Bellman-Gronwall-Reid type demand an assumption of monotony on the functions involved. Since the corresponding theory of differential inequalities does not require the monotonic assumption, it is believed that this extra condition is due to the technics employed rather than the necessity. It is also well known that in proving the convergence of successive approximations, it becomes crucial to suppose an additional restriction of monotony on the functions satisfying uniqueness criteria. The question whether this additional assumption is really needed has been open for many years. This problem was …

Existence And Comparison Results For Differential Equations In A Banach Space, V. Lakshmikantham Jul 1974

Existence And Comparison Results For Differential Equations In A Banach Space, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

The study of the Cauchy problem for differential equations in a Banach space has taken two different directions. One direction is to find compactness type conditions that guarantee only existence of solutions and the corresponding results are extensions of the classical Peano's theorem. The other approach is to employ monotonicity (accretive or dissipative) type conditions that assure existence as well as uniqueness of solutions. In fact, this latter method shows that uniqueness conditions imply existence of solutions also [37] and therefore may be regarded as extensions of the classical Picard's theorem.
