Electron Attachment To Molecules In Very High Pressure Gases, Ronald Earl Goans Jun 1974

Electron Attachment To Molecules In Very High Pressure Gases, Ronald Earl Goans

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: The study of low energy electron attachment to molecules is of fundamental importance in both the physical and biological sciences. These processes are important in the physical sciences because many molecular parameters can be directly or indirectly determined from electron attachment studies. Such parameters include electron affinities of molecules, electron attachment rate constants and cross sections, autoionization lifetimes of transient negative ion species, bond dissociation energies, and shapes of molecular and negative ion potential energy curves. Electron attachment studies are important in biology because of the large number of low energy electrons that are produced when ionizing radiation interacts …

Environmental Study Of A Portion Of The Middle Ordovician In Sequatchie Valley, Eastern Tennessee, Ernest Wilson Blythe Jr. Jun 1974

Environmental Study Of A Portion Of The Middle Ordovician In Sequatchie Valley, Eastern Tennessee, Ernest Wilson Blythe Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

A detailed depositional environmental analysis of a portion of Middle Ordovician Carters Limestone and Hermitage Formation in Sequatchie Valley in East Tennessee was made using six stratigraphic sections as closely spaced as permitted by reasonably complete outcrops. The approximately 60 feet of rocks of this stratigraphic interval include 18 distinct lithologies as determined from a field study and examination of samples collected at one foot intervals and closer with changes in lithology. Two bentonite beds generally accepted as being isochronous units offer a time framework. In all 565 samples were collected and of these 447 were cut, polished, and an …

Physics

One-electron reduction of the synthetic tetramers [Fe4S4(SR)4]2- (R = CH2Ph, Ph), by chemical and electrochemical methods affords the corresponding trianions. The collective results from optical, electron paramagnetic resonance, and Mössbauer spectroscopy, when compared to available data for reduced 4-Fe and 8-Fe ferredoxin proteins and super-reduced Chromatium high-potential protein, reveal that [Fe4S4(SR)4]3- are electronic analogs of the [Fe4S4(S-Cys)4] active sites of these proteins.

The Role Of A Dolichol-Oligosaccharide As An Intermediate In Glycoprotein Biosynthesis, An-Fei Hsu, John W. Baynes, Edward C. Heath Jun 1974

The Role Of A Dolichol-Oligosaccharide As An Intermediate In Glycoprotein Biosynthesis, An-Fei Hsu, John W. Baynes, Edward C. Heath

Faculty Publications

Incubation of mouse myeloma microsomes with GDP-[(14)C]mannose results in the biosynthesis of [(14)C]mannose phosphoryl dolichol [Baynes, J. W., Hsu, A.-F. & Heath, E. C. (1973) J. Biol. Chem. 248, 5693-5704] and a [(14)C]mannose- and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)-containing oligosaccharide derivative of dolichol. Thus, [(14)C]mannose phosphoryl dolichol and [(14)C]mannose-labeled oligosaccharide pyrophosphoryl dolichol were isolated from incubation mixtures by solubilization in 2% (w/v) Triton X-100 and the lipids were separated from small molecules by gel filtration fractionation. After removal of radioactive protein from the preparation, the two lipid derivatives were separated quantitatively by fractionation on a concanavalin A-Sepharose column; [(14)C]mannose phosphoryl dolichol was not …

Spectral Studies Of Esters Of 9 And 1 Anthroic Acid, Robert Fisch Jun 1974

Spectral Studies Of Esters Of 9 And 1 Anthroic Acid, Robert Fisch

Honors Theses

A comparison was made between spectral properties of several atomatic esters of 9- anthroic acid (9- COOAR) and the methyl ester (9-COOMe). The spectral properties observed were absorption spectra, fluorescence quantum yields (Øf) and Stokes shifts. Although all of the ester absorption spectra showed anthracene-like structure, the aromatic ester spectra were clearly more diffuse than the 9-COOMe spectrum. Certain electron delocalization pathways are available to 9-COOAR but not to 9-COOMe, thereby allowing greater carboxyl group-ring interaction for 9-COOAR, resulting in increased spectral diffuseness relative to 9-COOMe. Data are presented which show that the electronic absorption spectra of these esters are …

The Reconversion Of Ethylene Thioketals To Ketones, Jeffrey Paul Ginther Jun 1974

The Reconversion Of Ethylene Thioketals To Ketones, Jeffrey Paul Ginther

Honors Theses

Many aldehydes, ketones and other carbonyl-containing compounds react with 1, 2-ethanedithol to give highly stable cyclic thioacetals or thioketals. The problem lies in recovering the substituted 1, 3-dithiolanes to the carbonyl compound without altering the other substituents of the molecule. We propose a new direct method of exchange with formaldehyde to reconvert the 1, 3-dithiolane to the carbonyl compound. This was accomplished with 2, 2-diethyl-l, 3-dithiolane. Also, a mechanism is proposed involving the formation of a sulfonium ion intermediate. In preparation for the exchange study seven 1, 3-dithiolanes were synthesized.

A Comparison Of The Spectral Properties Of Anthracene-9-Carboxylic Acid And Anthracene-9,10-Carboxylic Acid, Gail Wendy Goodman Jun 1974

A Comparison Of The Spectral Properties Of Anthracene-9-Carboxylic Acid And Anthracene-9,10-Carboxylic Acid, Gail Wendy Goodman

Honors Theses

Previous studies have shown that substitution of a single carboxyl group on the anthracene ring produces fluorescent quantum yields (Øf) and Stokes shifts that are highly solvent dependent. The effects of solvents on the spectral properties of anthracene-9, 10-dicarboxylic acid (9, 10-(COOH) 2) which has symmetrically distributed carboxyl groups, was studied. Comparison is made with spectral data for 9-methyl anthroate (9-C00Me) and anthracene-9, 10-dicarboxylic acid (9, 10-(COOH) 2) which has symmetrically distributed carboxyl groups, was studied. Comparison is made with spectral data for 9-methyl anthroate (9-COOMe) and anthracene-9-carboxylix acid (9-COOH). The absorption and fluorescence spectra of the unprotonated forms of …

Eikonal Distorted-Wave Calculation For The Excitation Of H By He, Jerry Peacher, Richard H. Shields Jun 1974

Eikonal Distorted-Wave Calculation For The Excitation Of H By He, Jerry Peacher, Richard H. Shields

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The eikonal distorted-wave Born approximation developed recently by Chen, Joachain, and Watson is applied to hydrogen excitation by helium impact in the intermediate-energy range. The differential and total cross sections for the excitation of the hydrogen atom to the 2s, 2p±, or 2p0 state by helium impact are presented. These results are compared to experiment and previous calculations. The differential cross section for the excitation of hydrogen to the 2s state compares well with the experimental data of Thomas and Sauers in shape and slope, but has a discrepancy in magnitude.

Photoelectron Angular Distributions, Cross Sections, And Branching Ratios For Atomic Oxygen, Anthony F. Starace, Steven T. Manson, David J. Kennedy Jun 1974

Photoelectron Angular Distributions, Cross Sections, And Branching Ratios For Atomic Oxygen, Anthony F. Starace, Steven T. Manson, David J. Kennedy

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Theoretical calculations of the angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected from the 2p subshell of atomic oxygen for photoelectron kinetic energies 0≤ε≤30 Ry are presented using both Hartree-Fock (HF) and Herman-Skillman (HS) wave functions. Owing to the weakness of anisotropic electron-ion interactions, as evidenced by small differences between HF photoelectron phase shifts for alternative outgoing channels, the simple HS calculation of the angular-distribution asymmetry parameter is found to agree to within ≲ 0.1 with the HF calculations. Photoionization cross sections and photoelectron branching ratios have also beem computed in both the HF and HS approximation for the 2p subshell …

A Cephalometric Study Of Mandibulo-Facial Disostosis In Monozygotic Twins Using Computerized Methods, Lyn M. Lamberton Jun 1974

A Cephalometric Study Of Mandibulo-Facial Disostosis In Monozygotic Twins Using Computerized Methods, Lyn M. Lamberton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An investigation using computerized cephalometrics has been conducted to consider the cephalometric factors responsible for the characteristic appearance evident in individuals afflicted with Mandibulo-Facial Dysostosis. A pair of Negro monozygotic affected twins were studied using the other 10 non-affected members of the family as a control to minimize the environmental and hereditary factors. The Rocky Mountain Data System was utilized to analyze the lateral and frontal cephalometric radiographs of each individual using Ricketts Analysis and the data were subjected to statistical tests to determine the factors contributory to the syndrome. Age and size were considered and adjustments were made to …

Water Quality Within East Portland Terraces, Fouad Mohamed Tawfik May 1974

Water Quality Within East Portland Terraces, Fouad Mohamed Tawfik

Dissertations and Theses

Groundwater from thirty-three wells which are randomly distributed within 42 square miles of the residential, agricultural and industrial area of East Portland Terraces have been analyzed. The area is moderately wet with an annual precipitation of about 37 inches. Residual and transported sediments from different sources, dominantly volcanic, comprise the subsurface lithology. The sedimentary units that were deposited by means of rivers and lakes have filled an original structural and erosional valley in the area. This relatively unconsolidated valley filling is about 900 feet of predominantly lenticular, stratified and cross-bedded lenses of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders.

The …

Heat Transfer Across Carbon - Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos May 1974

Heat Transfer Across Carbon - Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos

Dissertations and Theses

Carbon samples were electrically heated while immersed in liquid helium I. Their temperature rise was observed on an oscilloscope as a function of the time after the onset of the electric current. There was no indication of the temperature overshoot previously reported for the case of bismuth in liquid helium.

Reasons are presented for the difference in behavior of carbon and bismuth.

Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons May 1974

Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons

Dissertations and Theses

Present-day builders of harpsichords disagree as to the use of iron or carbon-steel wire in their attempt to duplicate the tonal qualities of the early 16th century instruments. The variations in tone produced by vibrating iron and steel wires may be due, at least in part, to differences in their decay characteristics. A wire was set into vibration by placing a section in a magnetic field and passing a variable-frequency alternating current through it. A condition of resonance was established by appropriately selecting frequencies, lengths, and tensions that would simultaneously satisfy the relationship: fr = n/2L(T/p)1/2. Then measurements of decay …

Photoelectron Angular Distributions As A Probe Of Anisotropic Electron-Ion Interactions, Dan Dill, Steven T. Manson, Anthony F. Starace May 1974

Photoelectron Angular Distributions As A Probe Of Anisotropic Electron-Ion Interactions, Dan Dill, Steven T. Manson, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Expressions are given for atomic photoelectron angular distributions in LS coupling in which the role of anisotropic final state electron-ion interactions emerges explicitly. Calculations of photoelectron angular distributions for atomic sulfur are presented in which these anisotropic interactions produce clear deviations from the predictions of the Cooper-Zare model. Such effects are expected to be a general feature of photoelectron angular distributions for most open-shell atoms.

Laboratory Simulation Of Rainfall Erosivity For Gully Formation Study, T. Y. Kao May 1974

Laboratory Simulation Of Rainfall Erosivity For Gully Formation Study, T. Y. Kao

KWRRI Research Reports

The objective of this study was to develop a rainfall simulator, which imparts to the laboratory rainfall the more important characteristics of natural rainfall such as intensity, drop spectrum, kinetic energy, and momentum at impact, for using in soil erosion research with better results. In developing this simulator the better features of the basic types of earlier simulators, drip and nozzle, have been incorporated into this single design. The simulator developed in this study consists of a number of individual box modules placed in a rectangular pattern to form a single unit. Each module has a grid of capillary holes …
