An Ok Science Teacher, Robert Fuller Mar 1974

An Ok Science Teacher, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Many elementary school teachers feel insecure and unsure in their teaching of science, i.e., they have NOT OK feelings about themselves and science. These feelings are based on the teachers' previous science experiences and on their interactions with other persons in science courses. The improvement of elementary school science programs depends upon the teacher's ability to deal effectively with his feelings about science. A complete science education program for an elementary teacher includes three components: (1) science content, (2) science methods that take into consideration the intellectual development of children, and (3) a practical psychology for developing positive human attitudes …

Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff Mar 1974

Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff

KWRRI Research Reports

Primary productivity and water quality were studied in Doe Valley Lake, a 147-hectare impoundment on Doe Run, a spring-fed stream in Meade County, Kentucky, from 13 June 1969 to 31 July 1972. Doe Valley Lake is monomictic during most winter seasons, but it is dimictic during more severe winters because of its morphometry and location on the borderline climatic region for dimictic lakes (37° N latitude). Oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion is severe, and anaerobic conditions usually prevail by late June. A hypolimnetic areal deficit of 0.038 mg/cm2/day was calculated. Supersaturation of oxygen in the epilimnion was common, …

Abstract: Phase Transitions In Fecl2·2h2O In External Magnetic Fields: Mössbauer Spectroscopy, L. D. Kandel, M. A. Weber, Richard B. Frankel, C. R. Abeledo Mar 1974

Abstract: Phase Transitions In Fecl2·2h2O In External Magnetic Fields: Mössbauer Spectroscopy, L. D. Kandel, M. A. Weber, Richard B. Frankel, C. R. Abeledo

Physics

Monoclinic FeCl2·2H2O orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 23 K, and the magnetic structure consists of two sublattices of -FeCl2-chains lying along the c-axis. The coupling along the chains is ferromagnetic with weak antiferromagnetic coupling between chains. Application of an external magnetic field along the easy axis (a) induces phase transitions at H1 = 39 kOe and at H2 = 46 kOe.

We report the observation of the three phases using the Mössbauer effect in a single crystal of FeCl2·2H2O cut parallel to the c-axis and placed at …

Asymptotic Equilibrium Of Ordinary Differential Systems In A Banach Space, Roger W. Mitchell, A. Richard Mitchell Mar 1974

Asymptotic Equilibrium Of Ordinary Differential Systems In A Banach Space, Roger W. Mitchell, A. Richard Mitchell

Mathematics Technical Papers

A differential system [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation] has asymptotic equilibrium if 1) for any initial condition [see pdf for notation] the system has a solution [see pdf for notation] existing on and such that [see pdf for notation] exists and is finite, and 2) for any v e B there exists [see pdf for notation] and a solution x(t) of (1)-(2) with [see pdf for notation] Several papers have appeared dealing with asymptotic equilibrium of (1)-(2) when [see pdf for notation], and f is majorized by a scalar function g(t,u) which is monotone in u …

On The Existence Of Solutions Of Differential Equations In A Banach Space, Jerome Eisenfeld, V. Lakshmikantham Mar 1974

On The Existence Of Solutions Of Differential Equations In A Banach Space, Jerome Eisenfeld, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

The study of Cauchy problem for differential equations in a Banach space has taken two different directions. One approach is to find compactness type conditions [1,2,4,9,14] to guarantee existence of solutions only and the corresponding results are extensions of the classical Peano's Theorem. The other approach is to employ accretive type conditions [9,10,11,12,15] which assure existence as well as uniqueness of solutions. In fact, this latter technic shows that uniqueness conditions imply existence of solutions [16]. In this paper we follow the first direction. Employing Lyapunov-like functions and the notion of the measure of noncompactness, we prove a local existence …

Fixed Point Theorems Through Abstract Cones, Jerome Eisenfeld, V. Lakshmikantham Mar 1974

Fixed Point Theorems Through Abstract Cones, Jerome Eisenfeld, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

A well-known theorem of Banach states that if T is a mapping on a complete metric space [see pdf for notation] such that for some number [see pdf for notation], the inequality (1.1) [see pdf for notation] holds, then T has a unique fixed point (i.e., a point u such that Tu = u). Extensions of this theorem [1,2] continue to require that T is a contraction i.e., (1.2) [see pdf for notation] This condition is essential if p is a metric but if p takes values in a partially ordered set k, then the condition (1.2) is avoidable. In …

Studies In Probability Theory., Ramanathan Subramaniam Dr. Feb 1974

Studies In Probability Theory., Ramanathan Subramaniam Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis consists of four chapters. The inpetus for the work in Chapter 1 comes from the concept of 'conditional atom' introduced by ileveu (191. Here, using conditional atoms we generalize the concept of nenatomicity of measures. (We confine ourselves to probability measures). We obtain generalizations of results on non atomic measures in [1), [3] and of Liapounoff's theorem. The results in Chapter 2 have their origins in a paper by Boylan [7]. To study 'e quiconvergence of martingales' Boylan introduced in [7] a metric on the space of complete sub d-algebras of a probability space. A little later, Never showed …

Studies In The Theory Of Measurable Maltifunctions., Sheshi Mohan Srivastava Dr. Feb 1974

Studies In The Theory Of Measurable Maltifunctions., Sheshi Mohan Srivastava Dr.

Doctoral Theses

During the last fifteen years a large number of papers have been devoted to the study of elosed set valued multifunetions. The studies were notivated by both the theoretical and spplica- tional interests that such multifunetions have. From the appli- cational point of view it is worth noting that such multifune- tions arise in varlous problems of control theory, dynanie progra- aning etc. The theoretieal'aspects of these studies belong properly to classieal deseriptive set theory. Classionl deserip- tive set theory asks que stions about how sets are constructed and about other definability properties of sets. The results on closed set …

Invariant Subspaces Of Vector Valued Function Spaces On Bohr Groups., Somesh Chandra Bagchi Dr. Feb 1974

Invariant Subspaces Of Vector Valued Function Spaces On Bohr Groups., Somesh Chandra Bagchi Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The theory of invariant subspaces of various Cunclion-spaces of complox-valued and vector-valued functions on the circle group 13 well known through the 'Loctures on Invariant Subspaces' by Helson ([4]), Replacin; Line circle croup by a Bohr group B (that is, a compact ahelian group whose dual is a subgroup of tho ronl. line R, dense in the topology of R), Helson and Lowdenalager initiated the study of invariant subspaces of L2,(B) in (6]. They discovered that after suitable normalisation, the simply invariant subspaces of L2(B) arcinonc-to-one correspondence with a certain class of functions on R x B, which are called …

Phonon-Induced Second-Order Raman Scattering In Lif, T.P. Sharma, Roger D. Kirby, Sitaram Jaswal

Roger Kirby Publications

We have studied experimentally and theoretically the second-order Raman spectra of LiF. Theoretical calculations based on Born and Bradburn's approach explain the observed spectra fairly well when all the eight-nearest-neighbor, only two of the fifteen-next-nearest-neighbor negative-negative, and none of the fifteen next-nearest-neighbor positive-positive polarizability coefficients are used as adjustable parameters.

Pb And Bi L-Subshell Ionization Cross-Section Ratios Versus Proton Bombarding Energy From 0.5 To 4 Mev, Don H. Madison, A. B. Baskin, C. E. Busch, Stephen M. Shafroth Feb 1974

Pb And Bi L-Subshell Ionization Cross-Section Ratios Versus Proton Bombarding Energy From 0.5 To 4 Mev, Don H. Madison, A. B. Baskin, C. E. Busch, Stephen M. Shafroth

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental ratios of L-subshell cross sections are given for ionization of lead and bismuth by 0.5-4-MeV-proton bombardment. The ratio of the LII to LI cross sections exhibits a maximum near 1.75 MeV. Individual subshell cross sections are obtained from the experimental ratios and previous total-cross-section data. These subshell ratios and cross sections are compared with the theoretical predictions of the plane-wave Born approximation using nonrelativistic hydrogenic wave functions, of the binary-encounter approximation scaled from Mg K-shell cross sections, and of the binary-encounter approximation scaled from cross sections obtained using L-shell velocity distributions. It was found that both approximations …

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. I Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman Feb 1974

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. I Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A theory of diffusion-controlled intramolecularly catalyzed reactions of polymer chains in dilute solution is formulated. A closure approximation yields a soluble integral equation for (essentially) the transient rate of the reaction. The time dependent solution consists of a sum of simple exponential terms whose coefficients and decay constants can be readily calculated. The theory is also applied to luminescence quenching and ring-chain interconversion.

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. Ii Results For A Pair Of Terminal Reactive Groups, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman Feb 1974

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. Ii Results For A Pair Of Terminal Reactive Groups, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The formulas and results of the preceding paper are used to calculate the rate of reaction between reactive groups attached to the ends of a polymer chain. Extensive numerical calculations have been made for both transient rate processes and steady state luminescence quenching. The results are restricted to chains in dilute solution, in either the free draining or nondraining limits and with no excluded volume forces present. A discussion of the qualitative effects of excluded volume forces on the results is included. The results suggest that experimental studies of these processes may be feasible.

Development Of Prediction Relationships For Water Requirements With Irrigation Cooling, Billy J. Barfield, John N. Walker, F. A. Payne Feb 1974

Development Of Prediction Relationships For Water Requirements With Irrigation Cooling, Billy J. Barfield, John N. Walker, F. A. Payne

KWRRI Research Reports

A model for predicting leaf temperatures during an off-on mist cycle is presented. The model uses a combination of energy budget and aerodynamic techniques. The model was tested for dry leaf temperature and evapotranspiration predictions using average hourly data from Arizona. The accuracy was good. It was also tested for dry leaf temperature predictions using two to three minute data with a widely varying net radiation. When reasonable values of stomatal resistance were used, the agreement was again good.

The model was tested for prediction of wet leaf temperature prediction with a ten minute on, fifty minute off mist irrigation …

B707: Analysis Of Waste Disposal Problems Related To Maine Poultry Processing Plants, F. Richard King, Forest M. French Feb 1974

B707: Analysis Of Waste Disposal Problems Related To Maine Poultry Processing Plants, F. Richard King, Forest M. French

Bulletins

This study analyzed waste disposal problems related to Maine poultry processing plants. The problems of the Maine plants are quite typical of those found in the industry outside Maine. Two exceptions to this generality are amount of water used and cost of replacement and operation of the treatment facility. Maine plants appear to use more water than plants located in competing areas but they are of larger average size and have access to municipal water supplies and therefore are not particularly disadvantaged.

Pheasant Management Recommendations, William L. Baxter Feb 1974

Pheasant Management Recommendations, William L. Baxter

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Information on the life history and ecology of the ring-necked pheasant was collected on two, nine-square-mile study areas in Clay County, Nebraska, from 1954 through 1964. The study was designed to provide basic data that would allow scientifically based management decisions to be made for the maintenance and enhancement of ring-neck populations.

Findings indicate certain steps should be taken to improve pheasant populations on state-owned or controlled lands, as well as recommendations to improve habitat for pheasant populations on land not controlled by the Game Commission, These secondary proposals have statewide ramifications and offer potential for significantly improving pheasant populations …

Eikonal Approximation Applied To Atom-Atom Excitation At Intermediate Energies: Excitation Of H By H, Richard H. Shields, Jerry Peacher Feb 1974

Eikonal Approximation Applied To Atom-Atom Excitation At Intermediate Energies: Excitation Of H By H, Richard H. Shields, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The eikonal distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) developed recently by Chen, Joachain, and Watson is applied to atom-atom excitation in the intermediate energy range. In this paper the excitation of a hydrogen atom to the 2s, 2p±, or 2p0 state by hydrogen impact is considered. Differential cross sections are presented. Total cross sections are presented and compared to previous calculations. It is shown that the eikonal DWBA results for the total cross section approach the two-state distortion-approximation results in the limit of high energy and very-small-angle scattering.

On Perturbing Lyapunov Functions, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham Feb 1974

On Perturbing Lyapunov Functions, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

It is known [2,3] that in proving uniform boundedness of a differential system by means of Lyapunov functions, it is sufficient to impose conditions in the complement of a compact set in [see pdf for notation], whereas, in the case of equiboundedness, the proofs demand that the assumptions hold everywhere in [see pdf for notation]. We wish to present, in this paper, a new idea which permits us to discuss nonuniform properties of solutions of differential equations under weaker assumptions. Our results will show that the equiboundedness can be proved without assuming conditions everywhere in [see pdf for notation] (as …

Effect Of Virtual 4d-Shell Excitations On Rare Earth Spectra, Anthony F. Starace Jan 1974

Effect Of Virtual 4d-Shell Excitations On Rare Earth Spectra, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Ab initio energies for electric dipole transitions 4d10 (1S0) → 4d94f J = 1 in triply-ionized lanthanum have been calculated by constructing an effective interaction, acting within the configuration 4d94f, that incorporates effects of virtual 4d-shell excitations to all orders of perturbation. Virtual 4d-shell excitations, included within the random phase approximation, and virtual excitations to singly-excited configurations 4d9εf are found to reduce the ordinary electrostatic interaction by 38% for the 1P1 term of 4d94f, by 6% for the 3D1 term, and by 3% …

Deepwater Ports, Ronald Joel Calhoun Jan 1974

Deepwater Ports, Ronald Joel Calhoun

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper is designed to provide an overview of the oil energy import problem and an analysis in a case study format of the various deepwater port alternatives for direct shipment and transshipment of foreign crude oil. This work was initiated prior to the recent expanded energy crisis and although touches on the problems of dependency of the United States to foreign crude oil, the various alternative sources of energy, the essence of this paper is an analysis of the various deepwater port considerations for the direct or indirect importation of foreign crude oil; specifically along the Gulf Coast.

Oxidation Reactions Of Unsaturated Hydrocarbons For Fuel Cells, James W. Johnson, William Joseph James, A. K. Agrawal

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The anodic oxidation of unsaturated hydrocarbons has been the subject of numerous studies, primarily on Pt and Au electrodes at low temperatures, < 100°C. The complete oxidation to CO2 is usually the predominant reaction with both H2O and OH- having been proposed as the oxygen source. Usually a single study consists of a comprehensive investigation of a single compound on a single electrode or a somewhat limited study of several compounds on a single electrode. A diversity of proposed mechanisms has resulted and is illustrated by the following summary.
