The cavernicolous and endogeous Coleoptera Carabidae, actually (1972) known from the Anatolian peninsula (here considered together with Armenia, the Caucasus and the mountains of Lebanon), are examined and discussed. They belong to the tribes of Anillini, Trechini (Neotrechus, Aphaenops and Duvalius lines), Pterostichini, Molopini, Sphodrini. The cavernicolous and endogeous Anillini, Pterostichini and Sphodrini from this region have clear relations with the balkanic groups and may be considered as East-Mediterranean faunistic elements. On the contrary, the Trechini of the Neotrechus line are more related to the Caucasian groups, those of the so-called Aphaenops line are endemic of the Caucasus and of …

A Novel Method Of Constructing Sorting Networks, Robert M. Keller

The construction of sorting networks has been a topic of much recent discussion. In view of the apparent difficulty of verifying whether a reasonably large proposed sorting network actually does sort, the most useful approach for constructing large networks seems to be to devise a recursive scheme which constructs a network which is guaranteed to sort, obviating the verification phase. In this note, another such approach is presented.

Partial correlation, multiple correlation, canonical correlation, principal component and factor analysis are used to analyze the dependence structures of a multinormal population.

For a partial correlation analysis it is necessary to decide which variables are to be correlated and which of the remaining variables must be held constant.

Multiple correlation demands that one variable be dependent upon some or all of the remaining variates.

Knockout of α particles by 156-MeV protons from ⁶Li, ²⁴Mg, ²⁸Si, ⁴⁰Ca, ¹⁴⁰Ce, and ²³²Th has been used to investigate the A dependence of α clustering in nuclei. Protons and α particles were detected in coincidence under conditions of quasifree scattering. Corresponding reaction cross sections were measured. Cross sections for ²⁴Mg and ⁴⁰Ca were found to be about 2 orders of magnitude lower than for ⁶Li. The cross section for ²⁸Si was found to be about 3 times lower than that for ²⁴Mg and ⁴⁰Ca. Upper limits of the integrated cross sections for ¹⁴⁰Ce and ²³²U are still compatible with …

Fathead minnows were exposed to a series or concentrations of a copper, cadmium and zinc mixture during a 12.5 month chronic test in water of 200 mg 1^-1 total hardness. The metal concentrations in the mixture were selected on the basis of results obtained during previous chronic exposures to each of the metals individually in the same water. Strict summation of the chronic toxicities of the metals was not indicated when they were tested in combination. Toxic effects of the mixture attributable to copper appeared to be increased, but that attributable to cadmium was reduced. The effects thought to …

Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas Rafinesque) were continuously exposed to reduced pH levels of 4.5, 5.2, 5.9, 6.6 and 7.5 (control) during a 13-month, one-generation test. Survival was not affected, even at the lowest pH tested. Fish behavior was abnormal, and fish were deformed at pH 4.5 and 5.2. Egg production and egg hatchability were reduced at pH 5.9 and lower, and all eggs were abnormal. A pH of 6.6 was marginal for vital life functions, but safe for continuous exposure. Free carbon dioxide, liberated by the addition of sulfuric acid to reduce the pH, may have had an unknown …

The toxic effects of capt an on survival, growth, and reproduction of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and on survival of bluegiIIs (Lepomis macrochirus) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were determined in a flow-through system. In a 45-week exposure of fathead minnows, survival and growth were adversely affected at 39.5 μLg/Iiter. Adverse effects on spawning were suspected but not statisticaIly demonstrated at 39.5 and 16.5 μLg/Iiter. The maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (MATC), based on survival and growth, lies between 39.5 and 16.5 μLg/liter. "The behavior of the sticking coefficient of CO₂ on an H₂O substrate as a function of time is interpreted in terms of a microscopic nucleation theory. For a substrate temperature near 75 K and an incident flux near 10¹³ molecule cm⁻² sec⁻¹, a critical cluster size of four molecules and and activation energy of nucleation of 22 ± 2.4 Kcal mole⁻¹ is obtained. The analysis treats the nucleation processes as continuous rather than as a discontinuous process at some critical temperature.

VanStraten in 1948, determined that it is possible to imbed the graph K_3,3 (which is the graph representing the famous three houses, three utilities problem) in the torus in only two ways. She then used this fact to show that the graph representing the configuration of Desargues (containing K_3,3 as a subgraph) has genus two. Evidence of first-order alkyl-ring proton coupling is reported for the 4-alkylnitrobenzenes. Typical coupling constants of 0.7 Hz and 0.3 Hz were found for α-alkyl coupling with the ortho and meta ring protons, respectively, when the alkyl function was methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl. No β-alkyl coupling with ring protons was observed for the ethyl, isopropyl, or t -butyl groups, suggesting that the magnitude of the coupling constant is vanishingly small.

Vanadium(III) squarate trihydrate has been prepared; and the infrared, X-ray diffraction, and electronic spectra of the complex indicate that the central metal atom is in a slightly distorted octahedral field. A thermogravimetric study has shown that the complex loses three water molecules upon heating. A hydroxy-bridged, dimeric structure has been proposed from these data. © 1973, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

"Several linear and nonlinear algorithms for solving the discrete Tchebycheff problem are compared in this study. The Lawson algorithm is compared with two more well-known methods of linear Tchebycheff approximation. A new acceleration scheme for the Lawson algorithm is introduced and its performance is tested with an already existing acceleration technique. The new version is found to be better than the previous one but not as effective as the traditional Exchange method.

A nonlinear version of Lawson's algorithm is proposed for the solution of problems having approximating functions which are varisolvent. Some linear theorems of Lawson are extended to the …

"The narrowing of donor electron spin resonance spectra with increasing donor concentration N_D and increasing temperature T has been observed in semiconductors in the past. One proposed explanation for this phenomenon has been narrowing due to electron motion caused by phonon-induced tunneling (hopping) between donor sites. According to the Anderson narrowing theory, the line width of the narrowed line can be expressed in terms of the average square spread of the non-narrowed spectrum, < H²>_ave, and the average frequency of electron motion, ω_n. A study of ionization in rubidium has been made in a crossed atom-electron beam apparatus. At an electron energy of about 10 eV there is a maximum in the cross section corresponding to the maximum probability for removal of the 5s valence electron. At 16.5 eV we have observed a new peak that is caused by the mechanism of autoionization. For energies below 30 eV there is a good agreement, both in shape and magnitude, between the present measurements and the empirical formula of Lotz. The over-all uncertainty in the measurements is ± 12% which is mostly accounted for by …

"Water adsorption isotherms on gold films were measured with a quartz crystal microbalance. Two gold films were studied: a "dirty" gold film contaminated by approximately one monolayer of carbon, and a "clean" gold film prepared by evaporating gold from a heated tungsten wire under high vacuum.

Water was found to chemisorb on both films according to a Freundlich type adsorption isotherm. Isosteric heats of adsorption were computed from the isotherm data. On the "clean" gold surface the isosteric heat showed a logarithmic decrease with increasing water coverage. The highest measured value for the heat of adsorption was 35 kcal mole …

On Lake Eola, stormwater runoff has been identified as a major source of pollution. Other lakes in Central Florida are experiencing similar decay due to stormwater runoff. A device has been examined for diversion of the initial flows to treatment before discharge into the lake. The loops are examined as radio and soft X-ray sources under the assumption that they are objects related to the Gum Nebula but much older than it. The loop diameters are likely on the scale of 100 pc or more, as reported recently. This is naturally understood with the fossil Stromgen sphere model. Further progress in understanding the origin of the loops depends on the resolution of certain observational issues.
