Environmental Improvement: A Concept For Harbor Maintenance Programs For Long Island Sound, John-Robert Curtin

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper suggests a comprehensive approach to maintenance dredging and maintenance dredge disposal for Connecticut in a carefully-regulated manner that will improve, rather than impair, the natural quality of the Sound. It proposes an interim measure that would allow for the continued operation of Connecticuts Commercial Harbor areas until a permanent program, together with the necessary technological advances, can be implemented to handle dredge disposal. This paper is based on data presently available on New Haven Harbor, presented in a report on the environmental quality of dredge spoils proposed to be removed from one area within New Haven Harbor known …

Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton Jan 1973

Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Of the four time of planting trials twodefinitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 and …

Structure And Chemical Composition Of The Otoliths Of Cyprinus Carpio, Larry Paul Coen Jan 1973

Structure And Chemical Composition Of The Otoliths Of Cyprinus Carpio, Larry Paul Coen

Masters Theses

"The need for the study of microfossils such as foraminifera, conodonts, and otoliths as stratigraphic tools has been well established. However, disarticulated parts such as otoliths and conodonts cannot be effectively used unless they can be recognized. Otoliths, although somewhat unrecognized in the geological record, are far more abundant than articulated skeletons (Frizzell, 1965, p. 86). Therefore, much investigation is being conducted to reveal the origin, function, morphology, and usefulness of the otoliths of fishes.

In this investigation, the asteriscus, well developed only in Ostariophysins (of which the carp is a member), is studied for morphology. New tentative terms are …

A Study Of A New Hydrometallurgical Treatment For New Lead Belt Chalcopyrite Concentrates, Larry Steven Livingston Jan 1973

A Study Of A New Hydrometallurgical Treatment For New Lead Belt Chalcopyrite Concentrates, Larry Steven Livingston

Masters Theses

"A two-phase research project was conducted on chalcopyrite concentrates from the New Lead Belt of Missouri. Phase one includes an ore microscopy study of the Magmont and Viburnum chalcopyrite concentrates in respect to mineralogy, particle size and interlocking characteristics of ore minerals and their possible relationships to poor chalcopyrite-galena separation in the copper flotation circuits.

Results of the ore microscopy study of the Magmont and Viburnum mines chalcopyrite concentrates suggest that interlocking of chalcopyrite and galena are not the cause of poor chalcopyrite-galena separation in the copper flotation circuits.

The most common sulfides found in the Magmont and Viburnum chalcopyrite …

Distribution Of Trace Elements In Host Rock Limestone In The Tri-State Zinc-Lead District, Dinesh Jashbhai Patel Jan 1973

Distribution Of Trace Elements In Host Rock Limestone In The Tri-State Zinc-Lead District, Dinesh Jashbhai Patel

Masters Theses

"The trace metal contents of limestone in the Tri-State zinc-lead district were determined within a single horizon, the M bed. Ninety-six specimens, collected for a previous study of their petrographic character, were analyzed for zinc, lead, and copper using atomic absorption spectrophotometric techniques.

The unaltered M bed limestone at a distance from ore bodies was found to contain only 12-28 ppm zinc, 40-SO ppm lead and 12 ppm or less copper. Those limestone specimens which were found b earlier petrographic study to be altered principally to sparry calcite commonly contain anomalous amounts of zinc and lead. Some also have slightly …

Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Waters Of The Springfield Area, Missouri, Anita Louise Williams Jan 1973

Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Waters Of The Springfield Area, Missouri, Anita Louise Williams

Masters Theses

"Water samples consisting of streams, springs, lakes, deep wells, and shallow wells were collected from various locations around the Springfield area. These were analysed for concentrations of the heavy metals of lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, mercury, and iron. Heavy metal contents in the waters occasionally show local concentrations. The zinc content can be related to known minor mineralized areas around Springfield. Some iron content in the surface waters and shallow aquifers is contributed by the iron-bearing clays and pyrites in the shallow formations.

The ranges of heavy metal values in the Springfield area are in ppb: lead, 1 to 70; …

Effects Of Baffles On The Performance Of Anerobic Waste Stabilization Ponds, Stephen B. Nielson, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella

Reports

The performance of three baffled model ponds was monitored and compared to the performance of an unbaffled model pond utilizing four hydraulic and organic loading rates. All four ponds were operated simultaneously under the same environmental conditions using a synthetic wastewater.

Removal of organic carbon by the biological system in the different pond configurations only varied from 94-98 percent at the longest detention time (15 days); however, a considerable effect of the baffling was observed at the lower detention times. At a hydraulic detention time of 1.5 days the percent carbon removal was 53, 60, 62, and 70 percent for …

Publications (WR)

This program was a status study of the interaction between Las Vegas Wash, an enriched stream, and Las Vegas Bay, a wedge shaped arm of one of the world's deeper reservoirs. The program centered primarily on identification and counting of planktonic algae from several points in Las Vegas Bay. Additional work on nutrient enrichment of water samples was conducted to aid in interpretation of algal distribution related to nutrient input. Examination of a variety of physical, chemical, and biological parameters, both at many surface points in the bay, as well as in vertical profile, was also accomplished and further aided …

Seasonal Movements And Habitat Selection Of Pheasant Cocks In South Dakota, Robert A. Fedeler Jan 1973

Seasonal Movements And Habitat Selection Of Pheasant Cocks In South Dakota, Robert A. Fedeler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Data were gathered on seasonal movements and habitat selection of 30 pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) cocks that were radio-equipped in eastern South Dakota from 1970 to 1972. Pheasant cocks stayed in an area of less than 100 acres from spring through hunting season. In winter, cocks used even smaller areas more intensively. Cocks moved about their home range by shifting their activity center rather than by adjustment in range of daily travel. Adult cocks seemed to have strong site attachments on a year-round basis. Immature cocks were more mobile, especially during the fall prior to hunting season. In spring, adult cocks …

It was the purpose, therefore, of this work, to investigate the preparation, properties, and reactions of bisimines of 2,2,4,4- tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedione, to determine the chemical effects of carbon π-bonded to nitrogen. Certain of these effects are compared to carbon π-bonded to oxygen in a structurally similar environment.

The Primary Structure Of Nifungin, Marvin Lee Withrow Jan 1973

The Primary Structure Of Nifungin, Marvin Lee Withrow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary structure of the antifungal peptide nifungin was studied. Amino acid analysis of nifungin before and after performic acid oxidation revealed 51 amino acids and the presence of an unidentified ninhydrin positive material. The unidentified material constituted approximately ten per cent of nifungin by weight. It contains nitrogen but, as reported by others (2), did not contain phosphate or reducing sugars. It was not hydrolyzed into smaller compounds by strong mineral acids. Carboxyl terminal analysis was conducted utilizing carboxy-peptidase A and B on both the oxidized and unoxidized nifungin. Tyrosine appeared to be released most rapidly followed by lysine, …

Carbon Interstitial In The Diamond Lattice, C Weigel, David Peak, J W. Corbett, R P. Messmer, G D. Watkins Jan 1973

Carbon Interstitial In The Diamond Lattice, C Weigel, David Peak, J W. Corbett, R P. Messmer, G D. Watkins

All Physics Faculty Publications

Linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals-molecular-orbitals cluster calculations using the extended Hückel theory are carried out for the interstitial carbon in the diamond lattice. The results suggest that the interstitial configuration is not the tetrahedral or hexagonal site, as has been previously assumed, but is instead an "interstitialcy" configuration, i.e., either a split- 〈100〉 interstitial (which our results favor) or a bond-centered interstitial. The predicted minimum-energy configuration changes with charge state, suggesting that the interstitial in the diamond lattice is a possible example of the Bourgoin mechanism of athermal migration of a defect in the presence of ionizing radiation.

A Streamflow Simulation Model For A Semi-Arid Region, Adnan A. Saad, L. Douglas James Jan 1973

A Streamflow Simulation Model For A Semi-Arid Region, Adnan A. Saad, L. Douglas James

Reports

A streamflow simulation model which would reproduce the essential feature of the hydrologic regime of a semi-arid region, in this case Jordan, was developmed and described. The model is intended to fit conditions which exist in such a region. The hydrologic processes components which represent the evaporation and the base flow distinguish the Jordan model from others. Development of each function of the model and its constants was based on all the minimal amount of data available. one year of data was used to calibrate the model for Wadi Zerqa watershed. The model was then applied to simualte four years …

Computer Simulation Of The Hydrologic And Salinity Flow Systems Within The Bear River Basin, Robert W. Hill, Eugene K. Israelsen, J. Paul Riley Jan 1973

Computer Simulation Of The Hydrologic And Salinity Flow Systems Within The Bear River Basin, Robert W. Hill, Eugene K. Israelsen, J. Paul Riley

Reports

Accompanying the increased use of water resources is an increases accumulation of chemical pollutants. Te prevent degradation of the water resources beyong useful limits, pollution inputs from additional uses must be quite accurately predicted prior to implementation of the new use. The model described in this report was formulated to provide the required predictive capability for the Bear River Basin. Modeling concepts of the hydrologic system are based upon the development of basin relationships describing the hydrologic processes which are linked together by the countinuity-of-mass principle. The salinity flow system is then linked to the hydrologic system based on the …

Ionization‐Enhanced Diffusion: Ion Implantation In Semiconductors, J Bourgoin, David Peak, J W. Corbett Jan 1973

Ionization‐Enhanced Diffusion: Ion Implantation In Semiconductors, J Bourgoin, David Peak, J W. Corbett

All Physics Faculty Publications

A model for the diffusion of implanted interstitials during implantation is introduced and shown to be able to account for the tails observed in ion profiles. It is argued that mechanisms of ionization‐enhanced diffusion can explain some of the anomalous diffusion mechanisms observed in semiconductors. Indications for the existence of such mechanisms in the field of ion implantation in semiconductors are discussed.

Modification Of A Continuous Ice Crystal Replicator, Paul D. Thornley Jan 1973

Modification Of A Continuous Ice Crystal Replicator, Paul D. Thornley

Reports

A continuous ice-crystal replicator was modified by the addition of a gear drive to the cating wheel. This modification utilizes a positive drive force on the coating wheel rather than the friction force between the coating wheel and the film. The coating wheel operates successfully for at least 12 hours without slippage or damage to the film. Studies have uncovered several deficiencies in the replicator design which could be corrected. The correction of these deficiencies would lead to an improved quality of ice-crystal replicas. The need for continued studies in the fluid properties of Formvar solution is pointed out. Information …

Sorption Kinetics Part Ii: Modeling Longitudinal Concentration Profiles In A Packed Bed Reactor, David W. Hendricks Jan 1973

Sorption Kinetics Part Ii: Modeling Longitudinal Concentration Profiles In A Packed Bed Reactor, David W. Hendricks

Reports

A mass balance simulation model for sorption in a packed bed reactor was developed. All of the terms in the model, consisting of constants of the porous media, and functions, were evaluated by independent laboratory studies. The kinetic term was determined in Part I. Two numerical schemes (an explicit scheme and an implicit scheme respectively) with corresponding computer programs were developed and made operational. They were not tested against laboratory column results due to long times necessary on the computer and corresponding high costs. Laboratory testing consisted of measuring column profiles for six different packed columns at different flow rates …
