Sur Un Nouvel Amphipode Souterrain De Bulgarie Niphargus Kochianus Melticensis N. Ssp., Dan Dancau, Stoitze Andreev
International Journal of Speleology
A new subspecies of Amphipode is described, being the first representative of the Niphargus kochianus group in Bulgaria. The new subspecies resembles N. k. tamanini Ruffo, N. k. petrosani Dobr. et Manolache, N. k. labacensis Sket, N. k minor Sket, for the maxille I having one single hair on the internal lobe and a single combed spine on the external lobe. However, it differs neatly from all other subspecies by the length of the nails on the dactyl and by the peculiar form and the chetotaxia of the telson.
Distribution Of Foraminiferida In An Estuarine Marsh System, Charles Warren Norton
Distribution Of Foraminiferida In An Estuarine Marsh System, Charles Warren Norton
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Foraminiferal faunas in marshes and distributary channels of the James River estuary, Virginia, disclose several facies. The channel facies, primarily Ammobaculites crassus, and A. sp. A, typical of estuaries in Chesapeake Bay and other brackish areas are readily distinguishable freom the march facies. Marshes are divisible laterally by changes in the relative proportions of marsh species such as Miliammina fusca, Ammoastuta salsa, and Haplophragmoides hancocki.Changes along the longitudinal estuarine salinity gradient are discernable in both tidal creeks and marsh. Channels exhibit a longitudinal gradient from a freshwater thecamoebinid facies through an upper and mid-estuarine Ammobaculites facies to a higher salinity …

La Colonisation De Quelques Grottes Du Jura Par Niphadobota Alpina Bezzi (Dipt. Tipulidae), M. J. Turquin
International Journal of Speleology
Three new localities of Niphadobota (=Chionea) alpina in the French southern Jura allow the author to state that this insect’s climatic requirements explain the biogeography of the species; the origin of the colonization of caves by this dipteran is considered.
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Aspirin, Sodium Salicylate, And Acetate On Cells In Vitro, Roger Scott Barron
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Aspirin, Sodium Salicylate, And Acetate On Cells In Vitro, Roger Scott Barron
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Salicylic acid and its concern have long been used for the management of pain, fever, and inflammation. Of this group, acetyl-salicylic acid, or aspirin (ASA) has proved to be the most potent in each case. Although hydrolysis, the first step in biotransformation of aspirin takes place very rapidly, many workers feel that the greater effectiveness is due to a unique action of the intact molecule; however, others disagree. In this study, the effects of aspirin and in vitro were compared in order to obtain a greater amount of information relating to the problem.
Generalization Of Lie's Counting Theorems For Second And Third Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Suzanne Marie Davison
Generalization Of Lie's Counting Theorems For Second And Third Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Suzanne Marie Davison
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This work concerns two new theorems which count the maximum possible number of independent generators of a certain form which leave an ordinary differential equation of second or third order covariant. Sophus Lic has derived such theorems for a particular class of transformations. The new theorems contain Lic’s theorems as a suboase, and are therefore called ‘generalized” theorems.

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of The Reaction Of Chromium(Ii) With Pentaaquodiiodomethyl Chromium(Iii) And Pentaaquomonoiodomethyl Chromium(Iii) Ions., Ronald Sinclair Nohr
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Transition metal ions, in low oxidation states, have gained increasing use as versatile reducing agents for a number of organic compounds. The ability of metal ion to act as reducing agents in organic reactions is frequently thought to be due to the formation of intermediates which contain an organic species bound to a metal, although the identy of these organo-metallic intermediates has been determined in relatively few cases.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of one such reaction: the reduction of iodoform to methane by chromium(II). Two air stable organochromium(III) intermediates were separated and …

The Preparation And Characterization Of The Palladium(Ii) And Platinum(Ii) Chelates Of Three Cyclic Tertiary Amino Acids., Floyd Michael Hogue
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to prenare and characterize the palladium (II) and platinum (II) chelates of 1-pyrrolidineacetic acid, 1-piperidineacetic acid, and hexahydro-1-azepineacetic acid.
The ligands were prepared by reacting the cyclic secondary arnines (pyrrolidine, piperidine, and hexahydroazepine) with sodium chloroacetate. The resulting cyclic tertiary amino acids were saponified and, finally, converted to the hydrochloride salts by neutralization with hydrochloric acid.
The chelates were prepared by adding 1.0 millimole of K2PdC14 or K2PtC14 to a solution made by dissolving 2.0 Millimoles of amino acid hydrochloride in 25 ml. of water. The pH was …
Mechanistic Studies Of Cobalt Super Nucleophiles, Audrey Yeh Ku
Mechanistic Studies Of Cobalt Super Nucleophiles, Audrey Yeh Ku
Masters Theses
A study was initiated on the hypothesis, by Ugi and co-workers, that cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, and cyclopentyl electrophiles might undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions with retention of configuration.
A simple, high yield synthesis of both cis and trans-2-phenylcyclopropyl chlorides from styrene and chloroform is described. Reaction of each of these alkylating agents with the very nucleophilic cobaloxime super-nucleophile ultimately gave peroxy compounds which appear to arise from insertion of oxygen into the carbon-cobalt bond.
Neither trans-2-phenylcyclopentyl tosylate nor trans-2-phenylcyclohexyl tosylate would alkylate low valent cobaloximes under standard conditions.
A partial synthesis of the 2-phenylcyclobutyl tosylate is described along with suggestions for future …
The Conductance Of Some Polyvalent Electrolytes, Jack Lee Worthington
The Conductance Of Some Polyvalent Electrolytes, Jack Lee Worthington
Masters Theses
A new compound, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene-4' ,4",4"'-trisulfonic acid, was synthesized by treating triphenylbenzene in 1,2-dichloroethane with chlorosulfonic acid. The reaction appears to be quantitative. Conductance measurements were then made on the sodium, potassium, and lanthanum salts of this new acid and of 1,3,5-benzenetrisulfonic acid.
The choice of these acids was based on two factors: 1) the desire to prepare a 3-3 symmetrical unassociated electrolyte which would allow the determination of a more reliable equivalent ionic conductance value for La3+ and 2) an interest in using the Murphy-Cohen equation to determine solute parameters such as association constants if association is present.
Conductance …

Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona
Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona
International Journal of Speleology
A preliminary inquiry to the extent and boundaries of subterranean waterways within the Mystery Cave System was explored. Rhodamine WT dye in 500 ml quantities was used in fluormetry determinations of surface flow to ground water basins. A Turner Model 111 fluorometer was utilized for detection purposes powered by a portable 12 volt, 220 amp hour battery-inverter system. It was shown that water entered underground passageways through sinkholes or highly creviced limestone/dolomite rock strata and reappeared several kilometres downstream. The outflow appears in the form of “springs”. The possibility exists that contaminated surface water may seep through the soil for …
Oxidation Of Thin Silver Films By Ozone And Atomic Oxygen, Lawrence R. Thorne
Oxidation Of Thin Silver Films By Ozone And Atomic Oxygen, Lawrence R. Thorne
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Recently, thin silver film detectors have been used to determine atomic oxygen profiles in the 70-100 km region of the upper atmosphere. The detectors' sensitivity to atomic oxygen is the result of the formation of silver oxide(s) which cause their electrical resistance to increase. A common procedure to calibrate and to make these detectors more sensitive is to cycle them through a series of three or more oxidations and reductions. This paper indicates that this cycling makes silver films more sensitive to ozone, causing them to be usable only at heights greater than 38 km. Also reported herein are experimentally …
Investigation Of Surface Films - Chesapeake Bay Entrance, William G. Macintyre, Craig C. Smith, Et Al
Investigation Of Surface Films - Chesapeake Bay Entrance, William G. Macintyre, Craig C. Smith, Et Al
Reports
Experimental point source oil releases have been conducted in the Chesapeake Bay mouth area. Predictions of oil slick motion were tested, and slicks were sampled and analyzed to measure their aging rates over periods up to 32 hours. Remote sensing. techniques were used to detect and measure the spreading rate of oil. Some laboratory oil film aging experiments were done to further document and elucidate aging processes. Results indicate· a,reasonable motion prediction, an explanation of the non-biological initial aging of oil films, and a fair corroboration of a theoretical oil spreading model.

A Water Resource Management Model, Upper Jordan River Drainage, Utah, Bi-Huei Wang, James I. Felix, Rick L. Gold, Craig T. Jones, J. Paul Riley
Reports
As demands upon available water supplies increase within a river basin, there is an accompanying increase in the need to assess the downstream consequences resulting from changes at specific locations within the hydrologic system. This problem is approached in this study by digital computer simulation of the hydrologic system. Modeling concepts are based upon basic relationships which describe the various hydrologic processes. Within a hydrologic system these relationships are linked by the continuity-of-mass principle which requires a mass balance at all points. Spatial resolution is achieved by considering the modeled area as a series of subbasins. The time increment adopted …

Laboratory studies indicate dimethyl mercury may be a major product of microbial methylation of inorganic mercury. Although another methylation product, monomethyl mercury, has been extensively studied, the physical, chemical, and biologicl factors affecting the transport and food chain distribution of dimethyl mercury have remained unclear. This report presents results of laboratory studies of volatilization rates from water as a function of temperature and mixing conditions, uptake kinetics and equilibrium concentrations in algae,
The Economic Efficiency Of Inter-Basin Agricultural Water Transfers In Utah: A Mathematical Programming Approach, John E. Keith, Jay C. Andersen, Calvin G. Clyde
The Economic Efficiency Of Inter-Basin Agricultural Water Transfers In Utah: A Mathematical Programming Approach, John E. Keith, Jay C. Andersen, Calvin G. Clyde
Reports
The economic efficiency of water development in Utah, including transfer systems, has seldom been examined, not has the costs of public policies which result in deviations from efficient allocations. In order that public officials be better informed about water allocations, the present effort examines the efficient allocation of water in time frames up to 2020 under several alternative assumtions and calculates that cost of alternative policies. Using mathematical programming techniques, a computer model is developed to determine the supply (marginal cost) and demand (value or marginal product) relationships for agricultural water, given depletions for municipal and industrial (M&I) and wetland …

Hydraulic Tests On Model Of Manifold Of The Pumps Of The 1974 Extension Of The Yorktown Power Station With All Combinations Of One And Two Branches Taken Out Of Operation, Roland W. Jeppson, Calvin G. Clyde, Charles Kincaid
Reports
Introduction: A description of the fabrication of the manifold model and the design of the facilities constructed to test the model under various steady state flow conditions is given in the previous report. All tests included in the last report were with equal flows occurring in each of the five branches. Since the operation of the prototype manifold will necessitate that one, and possibly two pumps, be taken out of operations when the demand for cooling water is at a minimum, Browth & Root, Inc. requested taht the performance of the manifold model be determined under steady-state conditions with: (1) …

The …
Solving Three-Dimensional Potential Flow Problems By Means Of An Inverse Formulation And Finite Differences, Allen L. Davis, Roland W. Jeppson
Solving Three-Dimensional Potential Flow Problems By Means Of An Inverse Formulation And Finite Differences, Allen L. Davis, Roland W. Jeppson
Reports
A finite difference method is developed to solve the three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, potential flow equations obtained by using a potential function, o, and two mutually orthogonal stream functions, u and u*, to describe the flow. Problems are formulated in an inverse space where the potential function and the two stream functions are the independent variables, and the Cartesian coordinates x, y, and z are the dependent variables. The boundaries of the problem in the physical space, including the free surface, have known positions in the inverse space, so trial and error adjustments to the positions of the boundaries are unnecessary. …
Integrated Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Use Of Radio Waves, Duane G. Chadwick
Integrated Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Use Of Radio Waves, Duane G. Chadwick
Reports
An integrated value of soil moisture can be determine dby measuring the attenuation of vertically-polarized surface radio waves taht are propagated over the ground between a transmitting and receiving atenna. Soil moisture values in the root-zone region were measured over longitudinal distances typically ranging from 50 feet to 600 feet with good results. Integrated soil moisture measurements over greater distances are also possible. Received field strength of propaged radio surface waves closely matches theoretical calculations. The measurement is easily made and does not disturb the soil. Dense, green vegetation, such as alfalfa or corn, causes errors in measurement accuracy. Less …

This report describes the first phase of a larger study which is directed toward the development of a general technique for analyzing and solving urban metropolitan hydrologic problems through a joint consideration of both the physical and social dimensions. This report is limited to the preliminary work of identification of social variables, the first steps in assigning mathematical values to them, and developing a mathematical format for these variables. In addition, the physical-hydrologic system is identified for purposes of clarifying the elements in that system. The ultimate objective of the entire study is directed toward discovering a theoretical and generally …
Effect Of Air Bubble Solution On Air-Sea Gas Exchange, Larry P. Atkinson
Effect Of Air Bubble Solution On Air-Sea Gas Exchange, Larry P. Atkinson
CCPO Publications
Recent data on ambient wave generated oceanic bubble spectra (Medwin, 1970) permit the calculation of the influence of bubble solution on air-sea gas exchange. Schulkin's formula is used to estimate the depth variation of bubbles, and a square law is used to estimate the increase of bubble volume with wind speed. Calculations indicate that bubble solution can be a very significant factor in gas exchange. Bubble solution enhances gas input and retards degassing of the water column. Preliminary data show a lag time of about 5 hours in the response of the water column to an atmospheric pressure change.

Mando : A Computer Program For Symbolic Manipulation Of Differential Operators Generating Continuous Transformations, David Kenneth Davison
Mando : A Computer Program For Symbolic Manipulation Of Differential Operators Generating Continuous Transformations, David Kenneth Davison
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The program MANDO efficiently performs computations involving pairs of operators, a single operator, and operators applied to functions, saving time and cost over pencil-·and-paper methods.
A versatile but compact data structure, defined under SPIT-BOL's facility for creation of datatypes, contains the operators (and functions) and provides a means for systematically referencing their relevant parts.
On input, functions and operators are written in a restricted but natural string format, for which the program can readily convert them to the internal data structure.
Central to the method of operation of the derivative routine is its ability to differentiate a function written as …
Auger Satellites Of The L₂₃ Auger Emission Bands Of Al, Si, And P, John Junior Melles
Auger Satellites Of The L₂₃ Auger Emission Bands Of Al, Si, And P, John Junior Melles
Doctoral Dissertations
"In this study a detailed investigation of the high energy satellites of the L23 Auger emission bands of Al, Si, and P was made. The satellites are interpreted as arising from double ionization of the L23 shell rather than from a plasmon gain process. The parent-satellite energy separations, ΔE, between like structures were determined and were found to be consistently smaller than the volume plasmon energies measured for the same samples. A comparison of Si and SiO revealed no evidence that ΔE for Si is dependent on the volume plasmon energy of the sample.
The satellite threshold excitation …
Paleozoic Stratigraphy As An Ore Control Of Hydrothermal, Base-Metal, Sulfide Deposits In New Mexico, John Samuel Sullivan Jr.
Paleozoic Stratigraphy As An Ore Control Of Hydrothermal, Base-Metal, Sulfide Deposits In New Mexico, John Samuel Sullivan Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
"Until now the concept or regional stratigraphic control of hydrothermal ore deposits has not received much attention in the literature as a possible exploration guide for locating additional ore bodies. This concept is applied on a regional scale to Paleozoic strata in thirteen mining districts with hydrothermal base-metal deposits in a 35,300 square mile area or southwest New Mexico.
The rocks at the stratigraphic position of the ore-zones are characterized as massive- to thick-bedded with less than 5 percent chert present. The rocks are abundantly to moderately fractured. Fine- to medium-grained dolomite is the dominant host-rock in the lower Paleozoic …
