Data obtained as energy-loss spectra at angles from 0 to 7.3x10-3 rad (c.m.) with typical energy-loss resolution of 0.7 eV and angular resolution of 2x10-3 rad (c.m.) were used to calculate average differential cross sections dσdΩav for elastic scattering, direct excitation of the individual He(n=2) states, and direct excitation of the He+(n=2) states. The total cross section for excitation of the He(n=2) states obtained by integrating the differential cross sections was found to be 20x10-18 cm2 at 25 keV (lab) decreasing to 7x10-18 cm2 at 140 keV. At incident lab energies below 100 keV the He(2S2) and He(2P3) states dominate …

Water droplet growth rates in a Wilson cloud chamber were measured in Ar-H2O and He-H2O media. These rates were determined in the size range 0.45-10.0 u.m by detection of oscillations in the intensity of polarized light from a He-Ne laser source scattered at 30° by the droplet population. Pressure and initial temperature were measured in the chamber for use in the computation of three droplet growth theories for comparison to experiment. Experiments were conducted in supersaturations ranging from 1.04 to 3.45.

Penning Ionization Of Zn And Cd By Noble-Gas Metastable Atoms, L. A. Riseberg, William F. Parks, Laird D. Schearer
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Penning-ionization cross sections for He, Ne, Ar, and Kr metastable atoms with Zn and Cd have been measured in a pulsed afterglow. Within the framework of existing theories we have determined those parameters which are of importance in collisions of this type. We find that our data are internally consistent if the cross sections are proportional to the cube of the "hard-sphere" radii and the effects of selection rules are included. A theoretical basis for this dependence is suggested. © 1973 The American Physical Society.

A Crystalline Fragment Of The Double Helix: The Structure Of The Dinucleoside Phosphate Guanylyl-3',5'-Cytidine, Roberta Ogilvie Day, Nadrian C. Seeman, John M. Rosenberg, Alexander Rich
Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications
The sodium silt of guanylyl-3',5'-cytidine crystallizes in a monoclinic unit cell with one molecule in the asymmetric unit. Each molecule is related to another molecule by a 2-fold rotation axis which results in the formation of an antiparallel; right-handed .double helix with complementary hydrogen bonding between the guanine and cytosine residues. The crystal is heavily hydrated with 36 water molecules in the unit cell. The geometry of this crystalline double helix is. very similar to those which have been derived from studies of fiber x-ray diffraction patterns of double-stranded RNA; even though the latter do not yield data at atomic …

The so called “tropical” caves (most of which are also geographically “tropical”) are distinguished from the “temperate” caves by the much larger trophic resources. Spiders are common in both kinds of caves, but the groups present in one kind are mostly absent in the other (notwithstanding that many families are distributed over at least one temperate and one tropical region). As in all temperate caves more or less the same groups of spiders can be found, so the tropical caves have a typical spider fauna, composed of different groups (often also more than those present in the temperate caves). In …

Quaternary Geology Of Sargent County, North Dakota, Dennis N. Neilsen
Theses and Dissertations
Sargent County, in southeastern North Dakota, was glaciated during the Pleistocene Epoch. Objectives of a study of Sargent County were to (1) describe the surface sediment and interpret its origin, (2) correlate, where possible, this sediment with that of adjacent areas, and (3) recon struct the general geologic history of the county for the Quaternary Period.
A geologic map of the county was prepared using field data, topo graphic maps, aerial stereopairs, and soil maps. A map showing surface sediment origin was subsequently made using the available field and laboratory information.
Most of Sargent County is typical rolling prairie underlain …

Broad Spectrum Microwave Systems For Remotely Measuring Soil Moisture Content, W. P. Waite, K. R. Cook, B. B. Bryan
Technical Reports
A theoretical and experimental study of the microwave reflectivity of soils with varying moisture content was conducted. A system was developed to measure reflectivity over a continuous frequency range of 4 to 26.5 GHz, at incidence angles from 10° to 70°, and with both horizontal and vertical polarization. The measurements were found to be extremely accurate for smooth homogeneous surfaces, however, the effects of surface roughness were found to be more severe than predicted due to the discontinuous nature of naturally occurring rough surfaces. An algorithm was developed which used the frequency dependence of the reflectivity to estimate the effective …
Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz
Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
For centuries, researchers have attempted to devise the ideal parenteral nutritional product readily amenable to physiological requirements. Hyperalimentation, intravenous alimentation, parenteral alimentation, parenteral feeding, and total parenteral nutrition are synonyms which refer to a method of complete intravenous nutrition reserved for patients demonstrating negative nitrogen balance.
The nutrient solution appeared to accommodate levels of potassium phosphate, calcium gluconate, and magnesium sulfate well in excess of “usual” therapeutic concentrations. Similarly, commonly employed vitamin supplements and insulin were examined in combination with the hyperalimentation solution and failed to demonstrate signs of physical incompatibility. However, instrumental analysis, i.e., U.V. spectroscopy and thin-layer chromatography, …

Differences between tropical and temperate cave communities are an important topic in the actual biospeleological thinking. Among the most striking differences is the paucity of terrestrial troglobites in tropical caves. This fact may depend on the higher energy input into tropical caves which lessens the selection pressures for energy-economizing troglobite adaptations. Consequently evolutionary rates would be slowed in tropical caves and, in a date group, troglobites would appear later in such caves than in temperate ones with lower energy input. In order to investigate this point the authors studied the degree of adaptation to the cave environment in two species …
The Consideration Of Some Aspects Of Two Methods Used To Study Ion Association, Richard Karl Gard
The Consideration Of Some Aspects Of Two Methods Used To Study Ion Association, Richard Karl Gard
Masters Theses
An investigation was made into the possibility of determining thermodynamic ion association equilibrium constants for salts important in the study of seawater using spectrophotometry and ion selective electrodes. Calcium sulfate was used as the test salt. The success of the spectrophotometric method was found to depend upon the choice of a suitable indicator and refinement of the proper instrumental techniques. The indicators investigated were 1-(2'-hydroxy-1'-benzeneazo)-2-hydroxynaphthalene, 1-(2'-hydroxy-5'-chloro-1'-benzeneazo)-2-hydroxynaphthalene, and ammonium purpurate (murexide). Ammonium purpurate was found to be the most suitable indicator. Spectra of these three indicators and their calcium complexes at pH 10 are included in the paper. The ion selective …

A Study Of Organochlorine Insecticides In Freshwater Crayfish -- Analytical Problems And Biomonitoring Survey, Robert C. Vanderjack
Masters Theses
Crayfish were collected from 3 sites on Polecat Creek, Coles County, Illinois in early spring, early summer, and late summer of 1972. Pesticides were extracted from the crayfish tissue in a one step procedure utilizing a Florisil elution column. Analysis was by electron capture gas chromatography. Pesticide residues in the nannogram range were analyzed and background contamination was an important consideration. Sources of background contamination were investigated and teflon stopcocks, Florisil, and residues on “cleaned” glassware were found to be major contamination sources. Distilled water used in flushing glassware should also be considered a potential contamination source.

Scavenging Of Atmospheric Particles By Water Drops, Ming-Shian Wu
Scavenging Of Atmospheric Particles By Water Drops, Ming-Shian Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
"In the first paper, the mechanisms of particle capture and coalescence of aerosols by a moving water drop in the atmosphere are studied using the boundary-layer flow approximation. The particle trajectory is computed by solving the equations of motion of the particle both outside and inside the boundary layer using the Adams-Moulton method. The grazing trajectory is found by a trial-and-error technique. The collision and collection efficiencies of scavenging due to particle inertia and to the velocity gradient of the flow field are then computed for water drops ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mm in radius and for particle of …
The Fauna And Paleoecology Of The Charleston Quarry Shale, James Karl Gilliam
The Fauna And Paleoecology Of The Charleston Quarry Shale, James Karl Gilliam
Masters Theses
The fauna and paleoecology of a late-Pennsylvanian shale contained in the Livingston Limestone of eastern Illinois is here defined. The name, Charleston quarry shale, is informally used for this shale in the area of the Charleston Stone Company quarry, northeast of Charleston, Illinois (SEC. 32, T. 13N., R. 10E., Coles Co.).
The fauna consists mostly of bryozoans, brachiopods and crinoids distributed throughout three distinct zones in the Charleston quarry shale. This fauna inhabited an offshore quiet bottom area in a shallow, warm, marine epicontinental sea which covered the area in the late-Pennsylvanian geologic period. The depth of water above the …
The Isolation And Purification Of A Fluorescent Compound From Pseudomonas, Thomas M. Davey
The Isolation And Purification Of A Fluorescent Compound From Pseudomonas, Thomas M. Davey
Masters Theses
Fluorescence in certain land snails has been found to arise from a bacteria carried by the snails. The bacteria, a genus of Pseudomonas, produce a pigment complex in iron-deficient media. The pigment complex consists of both fluorescent and non-fluorescent pigments. One of the fluorescent compounds was isolated and purified by paper chromatography using several different solvent systems.
Absorption and fluorescent spectra of the compound at a number of pH values were measured and the changes with pH of both the intensity and the color of the fluorescence were observed. The purified compound was ninhydrin negative but after acid hydrolysis …

Masters Theses
Computer programs were developed tor the conductance equations of R. M. Fuoss and L. Onsager as well as for the conductance equations of T. J. Murphy and E. G. D. Cohen. These programs were used to calculate values from selected conductance measurements. The resulting values were compared with values produced by other computer programs using the equations of Fuoss and Onsager as well as the equations of E. Pitts. The comparisons demonstrated the equations of Murphy and Cohen to be the equal of or superior to the other equations for the majority of cases. The equations of Pitta were superior …
