The Eikonal Distorted Wave Born Approximation For The Excitation Of Hydrogen By Impact With Hydrogen And Helium In The Intermediate Energy Range, Richard Homer Shields Jan 1972

The Eikonal Distorted Wave Born Approximation For The Excitation Of Hydrogen By Impact With Hydrogen And Helium In The Intermediate Energy Range, Richard Homer Shields

Doctoral Dissertations

"An eikonal approximation is applied to atom-atom scattering in the intermediate energy range. The theory and the form of the eikonal approximation are reviewed. Also a brief survey of previous theoretical methods for all energy ranges is included.

In particular, the differential and total cross sections for the excitation of hydrogen to the 2s and 2p states by impact on hydrogen and helium atoms have been calculated using the eikonal distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) for the incident energy range of 2.25-100 keV. The eikonal DWBA differential cross sections are compared to the differential cross sections given by the first …

Applied Geology Of The Bismarck-Mandan Area, North Dakota, Gerald H. Groenewold Jan 1972

Applied Geology Of The Bismarck-Mandan Area, North Dakota, Gerald H. Groenewold

Theses and Dissertations

The Bismarck-Mandan area includes about 350 square miles located along both sides of' the Missouri River in south-central North Dakota. The area can be divided into two major physiographic divisions: the broad Missouri River floodplain and the nearly flat uplands which are dissected by minor streams. Geologic units in the area include Upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary sandstone, siltstone, and shale and Quaternary sand, silt, clay, and gravel.

Expansion of residential areas around the cities of Bismarck and Mandan results in conflicts in land-use between agricultural, urban, and resource development. This study consists of detailed geologic maps and a series …

Dust Storms Cause Yield Losses, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, C. H. Trotman Jan 1972

Dust Storms Cause Yield Losses, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, C. H. Trotman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Farmers and research workers are well aware that heavy grazing during summer loosens and exposes soil to the action of strong winds and summer thunder storms. They also realise that dust storms mean soil loss from paddocks, but until now there has been little idea of the effect of these storms on crop yields in subsequent seasons.

A Numerical, Time Domain Solution For The Response Of A Gimbal Supported Gyro, Floyd Stanley Hall Jan 1972

A Numerical, Time Domain Solution For The Response Of A Gimbal Supported Gyro, Floyd Stanley Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

"This paper develops an algorithm to generate a numerical solution for the response of a gimbal supported gyro to arbitrary forcing functions and base motion, and includes the normal parasitic effects of bearing friction, viscous pivot damping, and pivot spring constants. There are relatively few restrictions on gyro and gimbal structure geometry. Solution accuracy is limited only by the computing machine accuracy; the algorithm being an explicit function of the input data. The algorithm is fast and requires only a moderate amount of computer memory"--Abstract, page ii.

The Interspersion Index As A Technique For Evaluation Of Bobwhite Quail Habitat, William L. Baxter, Carl W. Wolfe Jan 1972

The Interspersion Index As A Technique For Evaluation Of Bobwhite Quail Habitat, William L. Baxter, Carl W. Wolfe

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Some forty years ago, the concept of habitat interspersion was advanced by Aldo Leopold (1931). Indicating then that "we are only on the threshold of an understanding of the ecology of game species," Leopold went on to postulate his law of interspersion which recognized that “game is a phenomenon of edges.” Although the validity of Leopold's premises has been documented both directly and indirectly many times in the past four decades, the complexity and frustration in describing ecological diversity of game range has continued to pose a problem for wildlife managers since 1931.

The Mio-Eugeosynclinal Thrust Interface And Related Petroleum Implications In The Sason-Baykan Area, Southeast Turkey, Ismail Özkaya Jan 1972

The Mio-Eugeosynclinal Thrust Interface And Related Petroleum Implications In The Sason-Baykan Area, Southeast Turkey, Ismail Özkaya

Doctoral Dissertations

"A detailed investigation of the stratigraphy, structure and petroleum geology of the Sason-Baykan region in 600 square km area of the thrust belt of southeast Turkey was completed at a scale 1: 25 000. Geosynclinal sediments within the area were redated.

Results of field study indicate a massive plate of metamorphic rocks and crystalline limestones was thrust southward over geosynclinals sediments. These in turn were thrust over the southern marginal basin deposits. A stratigraphic sequence of the allochthonous geosynclinals sediments was reconstructed and correlated with the autochthonous Tertiary section. Contrary to earlier views the allochthonous sediments and accompanying igneous rocks …

A Correction To Classical Homogeneous Nucleation Theory For Polar Molecules Exhibiting An Electric Double Layer At The Liquid Surface, Daniel R. White, James L. Kassner Jan 1972

A Correction To Classical Homogeneous Nucleation Theory For Polar Molecules Exhibiting An Electric Double Layer At The Liquid Surface, Daniel R. White, James L. Kassner

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An oriented dipole surface layer is added to the classical liquid drop model of nucleation to account for the surface behavior of substances having polar nonsymmetrical molecules. The preliminary treatment of the change in free energy as given by Abraham is modified to include Fletcher's exponential decay of the degree of orientation. An additional correction for the excess binding energy due to the presence of a foreign molecule in the prenucleation cluster is included to account for the inflections observed in the experimental results of Allen and Kassner. The resulting free energy of formation is combined with the kinetic treatment …

Collisional Excitation Of N+ At 50 Kev, D. H. Crandall, G. York, V. Pol, John T. Park Jan 1972

Collisional Excitation Of N+ At 50 Kev, D. H. Crandall, G. York, V. Pol, John T. Park

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The excitation spectrum of N+ has been observed by examining the energy lost by a 50- keV N+ beam passing through a He target. The spectrum exhibits dramatic features with large cross sections. Determination of the approximate ratio of metastable to ground-state ions in the primary ion beam has permitted measurement of excitation cross sections from both ground-state and metastable N+ ions colliding with He target atoms. © 1972 The American Physical Society.

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee Jan 1972

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The nutrient contribution of septic tanks to a lake was evaluated at Lake Sallie, in glacial outwash terrain of northwestern Minnesota. Groundwater entering the lake was collected by covering 0.258 m2 of lake bed with a bottomless cylinder vented to deflated plastic bag. Inflow velocity ranged from 0.01 to 2.5 micrometers per-second along 30% of the lakeshore. Groundwater inflow along an 800 m segment of shore amounted to 4.50 x 105 m3/year, and was uniformly distributed along the shore, but decreased exponentially away from shore.

Effluent from a heavily-used lakeside septic tank fanned out along the surface of the water …

Groundwater Of The Spiritwood Lake Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota, Frank J. Schulte Jan 1972

Groundwater Of The Spiritwood Lake Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota, Frank J. Schulte

Theses and Dissertations

The Spiritwood Lake study area is in a generally undulating to rolling glacial plain 17 miles north and east of Jamestown, North Dakota. Spiritwood Lake is about 50 feet below the surface of the bedrock plain in a former melt-water channel. In the study area, glacial drift unconformably overlies the Pierre Shale, the youngest pre-Pleistocene sediment. The boundary between the two units is marked by a zone of shattered Pierre Shale. The top of this shattered zone forms a plain of moderate relief which probably was the preglacial surface of the study area.

Two large valleys can be distinguished in …

A Study Of Selected Antineoplastic, Antibiotic, And Corticosteroid Drugs In Intravenous Admixtures, Melvin Philip Mcrae Jan 1972

A Study Of Selected Antineoplastic, Antibiotic, And Corticosteroid Drugs In Intravenous Admixtures, Melvin Philip Mcrae

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The benefits of intravenous therapy have become more and more apparent over the years. Medications can be given rapidly with an expectant rapid onset of action. The response to the drugs or fluids can often be closely controlled by regulating the dose or rate of administration. Frequently, adequate blood and tissue levels needed to eradicate many serious infections can be reached only by this route. Intravenous therapy is an especially appropriate method when the use of the oral tract, for one reason or another, cannot be used.

The development of intravenous therapy, however, did not proceed without its difficulties. Problems …

The Identification Of Barbiturates By Attenuated Total Reflectance, Robert Lewis Jan 1972

The Identification Of Barbiturates By Attenuated Total Reflectance, Robert Lewis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The use of Attenuated Total Reflectance as an analytical technique in infrared spectroscopy has become increasingly important in the past few years. ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance) is a relatively new analytical method. Producing spectra of compounds by this method requires no solvent for dissolving the sample and no salts for making pellets. The only requirements for spectra production, similar in quality to those produced by conventional methods, are that there is enough sample to cover both sides of the reflector be similar. The index of the sample is fixed; therefore, the index of the reflector is controlled by selecting a …

Generalized Inverse Matrices And Applications In Statistics, James Manville King Iv Jan 1972

Generalized Inverse Matrices And Applications In Statistics, James Manville King Iv

All Master's Theses

In the theory of linear statistical models, one frequently encounters consistent systems of linear equations Ax= y. If A is nonsingular then a unique solution is given by x - 1 A y. If A is singular or rectangular however, then there are an infinite number of solutions; and the theory of generalized matrix inverses can be used to generate and characterize the solution set.

This thesis examines properties of generalized matrix inverses, and their use in solving linear equations, and in particular the role they play in treating the concept of estimability.
