Squillites Spinosus (Syncarida, Malacostraca) And A New Unnamed Crustacean From The Mississippian Of Central Montana, Joan Matthews Rumore
Masters Theses
A Mississippian syncarid from the Heath shale, Squillites spinosus Scott, 1938, is redescribed and a discussion of some aspects of Syncarid phylogeny is given. Modern Syncarid biogeographical distribution is discussed and an analysis of these zoogeographical patterns is provided. A strange animal, Crustacea (incerta sedis) from the Heath shale is described in as far as is possible.
In 1971, Dr. Richard Lund of the University of Pittsburgh while searching for fossil fish in the Upper Mississippian Heath Shale of Montana found the associated remains of fossil crustaceans. Two locations were involved, T14 N R20E sec. 28, Fergus County, Montana, 2 …

Environment And Communiy Organization In Grasslands Of Canyonlands National Park, Edgar F. Kleiner, K. T. Harper
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
Sixty uniformly distributed stands in adjacent areas, 40 in Virginia Park (virgin) and 20 in Chesler Park (grazed), were analyzed. Cryptogamic and vascular species were recorded; cover was analyzed by the point sampling method, and frequency by means of 25 quadrats (each 0.125 m^2) per stand. The prevalent species (26 in Virginia, 23 in Chesler) were selected on the basis of a constancy-times-frequency index. Interspecific association patterns were determined by means of simple procedures based on quadrat frequency values for each species in the individual stands. Major environmental variables were recorded at each stand, and soil samples from four depths …

Water Resources Of Part Of Canyonlands National Park, Southeastern Utah, C. T. Sumsion, E. L. Bolke
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
Canyonlands National Park is in about the center of the Canyon Lands section of the Colorado Plateaus physiographic province in southeastern Utah. The part of the park discussed embraces an area of about 400 square miles comprising isolated mesas, precipitous canyons, and dissected broad benches near the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers, the only perennial streams in the area. The climate is arid to semiarid; normal annual precipitation ranges from less than 8 to about 10 inches. Potential evapotranspiration is about 41 inches annually.
Geology of the park is characterized by nearly horizontal strata that dip gently northward. …
The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger
The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
The Colorado Plateau was one of the last areas in the United States to be developed economically. Before the 1880s it was virtually empty except for Indians. Today the vast scenic and energy resources of the area are under development, and projections for future development are frightening. Problems of land use management are directly related to the fragmented nature of landholdings. Present methods of consolidation are inadequate, and new approaches to the organization of space must be devised if further degradation of the environment is to be prevented.

"Three models are considered that have U-shaped hazard functions, and a fourth model is considered that has a linear hazard function. Several methods for estimating the parameters are given for each of these models. Also, various tests of hypotheses are considered in the case of the model with the linear hazard function. One of the models with a U-shaped hazard function has a location and a scale parameter, and it is proved in general that any other parameters in a distribution of this type are distributed independently of the location and scale parameters.
A new method used to estimate the …
The Hemoglobin Of Tubifex Tubifex, Lalitchandra Vrajlal Vora
The Hemoglobin Of Tubifex Tubifex, Lalitchandra Vrajlal Vora
Masters Theses
The hemoglobin of Tubifex tubifex is found in solution in the blood of the worm in cells as in vertebrates. The binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin can be followed spectrophotometrically. A peak of absorbtion at 540 nm is fairly constant under different condition, while a peak at 575 nm disappears from the spectrum when oxygen is removed. The hemoglobin contains heme, non-heme iron and protein.
Binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin was found to be dependent on the concentration of the hemoglobin, at low concentrations (4.16 x 10-6 M), oxygen could not be removed from the hemoglobin. Only …
The Conductance Of Some Non-Rigid Bolaform Electrolytes, William Terry Schmidt
The Conductance Of Some Non-Rigid Bolaform Electrolytes, William Terry Schmidt
Masters Theses
Bolaform electrolytes are those which contain two or more charges separated by an inert framework. These are intermediate in structure between simple electrolytes and polyelectrolytes. Since these are similar to both synthetic and biological electrolytes, this investigation has been undertaken to determine some of their properties in solution.
The sodium and magnesium salts of ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane and decane α,ω-disulfonates were prepared. Each acid was prepared by refluxing the α,ω-dibromide of the desired salt with sodium sulfite. The sodium and magnesium salts were prepared by ion-exchange techniques.
The conductance of each salt was determined in methanol utilizing the …

Range And Optimum Growth Concentrations Of Phosphate And Nitrate For Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Thomas E. Hill
Range And Optimum Growth Concentrations Of Phosphate And Nitrate For Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Thomas E. Hill
Masters Theses
A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.
The "plus" strain of this heterothallic alga was cultured in a TRIS-buffered inorganic medium with various concentrations of sodium phosphate and potassium nitrate and adjusted to a pH of 7.4. The axenic cultures were evaluated at the end of 6 days with a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength …

A Review Of "Longitudinal Study" In Developmental Psychology, Emily H. Finley
A Review Of "Longitudinal Study" In Developmental Psychology, Emily H. Finley
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this library research thesis is to review the "longitudinal study" in terms of problems and present use. A preliminary search of the literature on longitudinal method revealed problems centering around two areas: (1) definition of "longitudinal study" and (2) practical problems of method itself. The purpose of this thesis then is to explore through a search of books and journals the following questions:
1. How can “longitudinal study” be defined?
2. What problems are inherent in the study of the same individuals over time and how can these problems be solved?
A third question which emerges from …

Perspectives In Hospital Pharmacy Design Based On Functional Requirements, Robert Kenneth Overend
Perspectives In Hospital Pharmacy Design Based On Functional Requirements, Robert Kenneth Overend
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is significant that the separation of pharmacy from medicine occurred for the first time in institutions under ecclesiastic authority which were devoted to the care of the sick. In this period of history, there was little division between the church and state; therefore, business did not play any part in the overall health care scheme. The prime consideration was the delivery of the highest quality of pharmaceutical and medical services. This was best accomplished by a division of labor between the expert in the medical treatment and the expert in the selection, preservation and prepagation of medicinals. In other …

Observation Of The Influence Of Centrifugal Distortion Of The Methane Molecule On Nuclear Spin Relaxation In The Gas., Peter A. Beckmann, M. Bloom, E. E. Burnell
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
The spin–lattice relaxation time T1 was measured in gaseous CH4 as a function of density at room temperature between 0.006 and 7.0 amagats. T1 was found to pass through a minimum near 0.04 amagats in agreement with previous, less precise measurements. The spin–rotation interaction is the dominant relaxation mechanism in gaseous CH4. Since the spin–rotation constants are accurately known for CH4, the relaxation experiments provide a check on the theory of spin–lattice relaxation for spherical top molecules. In the conventional theory, it is assumed that the correlation function of the spin–rotation interaction is …

The Formulation And Physical Analyses Of Antibiotic Aerosol Foams For The Development Of Potential Topical Dermatologicals, Joseph Alexander Woelfel
The Formulation And Physical Analyses Of Antibiotic Aerosol Foams For The Development Of Potential Topical Dermatologicals, Joseph Alexander Woelfel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Within the last two decades the consumer market has been deluged with a diversity of aerosol products. The acceptability and utility of these products is reflected by the number found in the household and industry.
An antibiotic foam would obviate the necessity of manual application as is the case with the ointment or cream type products. Therefore, there would be less irritation to the already traumatized or infected sites by mechanical, chemical, or bacterial vectors.
Thus, the objective of this research will be to systematically develop suitable aerosol foam systems which contain therapeutically effective topical antibiotics with a subsequent evaluation …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It has been previously shown that benzenesulfonamide gives thiophenol and diphenyldisulfide upon Birch reduction. The sulfonamide group is easily reduced. Probably the electron deficient sulfur atom in sulfonamide can accommodate an electron easily.
The present study involved the Birch reduction of benzenesulfonamide, N,N-dimethylbenzenesulfonamide, N,N-diisobutylbenzenesulfonamide and 2-mesitylenesulfonamide.
Group Theoretic Properties Of Some Schröedinger Equations : Systematic Derivation, Sukeyuki Kumei
Group Theoretic Properties Of Some Schröedinger Equations : Systematic Derivation, Sukeyuki Kumei
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I study the group theoretic structure of the Schrodinger equations of simple systems by making use of a new systematic method. Group theoretic analysis of Schrodinger equations have been made previously by numerous physicists. The groups found may be classified as: a) geometrical groups; b) dynamical degeneracy groups; c) dynamical groups
The geometrical group arises simply from the spatial symmetry of the system. Although the geometrical groups are very useful, they are not very interesting from the physical viewpoint.
On the other hand, the study of the dynamical degeneracy groups and the dynamical group is very attractive …

Dipeptide Complexes Of Palladium(Ii) And Platinum(Ii), Lewis Enos Nance
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Due to recent interest in the role of heavy metals in enzymes. oxygen-carrying molecules. and anticarcinogenic compounds, the study of metal-protein bonding has assumed a new importance. Studies have been made utilizing platinum compounds as anticarcinogenic agents in several different types of cancerous activity. No study of the mechanism by which Pd(II) and Pt(II) compounds exhibit anticarcinogenic properties has been made to date.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the nature of bonding of Pd(II) and Pt(II) with various dipeptides, which were chosen in this study as a basic unit of protein-like material. These compounds have the advantage …
The Thermal Rearrangement Of Triarylacetonitrile Oxides., Leslie Wayne Gibbs
The Thermal Rearrangement Of Triarylacetonitrile Oxides., Leslie Wayne Gibbs
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This research is a detailed study of the rearrangement of triarylacetonitrile oxides to the corresponding triarylmethylisocyanates. The kinetics of the rearrangement of triphenylacetonitrlle oxide was followed by infrared absorption spectroscopy using the peak due to the N-0 stretching (1307cm-1). A study, both, using the differential method (i.e., a plot of the logs of the initial slopes vs. the log of the concentration) and a check of the integrated forms of the rate expressions to determine which gave a constant value for the rate constant showed that the reaction is first order.
From measurements of the rate constant, k, …
