A Study Of A Divalent Cation-Selective Electrode, William Stanhope Ryan Jr.
A Study Of A Divalent Cation-Selective Electrode, William Stanhope Ryan Jr.
Master's Theses
The ion-selective membrane electrode, recently introduced commercially, has shown excellent promise as a tool for determining ionic activities and concentrations in solution. It was the intent of the author to study the Orion divalent cation-selective electrode with two objectives.
The first objective of this research was to characterize the response of the divalent cation-selective electrode to calcium and magnesium ions in aqueous solutions. The effect of anions, monovalent cations; and pH upon this response was investigated. An examination was made of the response of this electrode to other divalent cations and of the effect of organic solvents on the membrane …
An Investigation Of Some Free Radicals.|Ni.|Pdecomposition Of Nitrosyl Disulfonate Ion In Polar Non-Aqueous Solvents.|Nii.|Preaction Between 2,2-Diphenyl -1- Picryl Hydrazyl And Nitrosyl Disulfonate Ion Free Radicals, Janan Mary Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
Part I reports the stud y of the decomposition of nitrosyl disulfonate ion in DMSO, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane. A multi-step mechanism involving sulfite ion, sulfite ion radical, and nitrosyl monosulfonate radical as intermediates is proposed. The products of the decomposition are nitrosonium ion, hydroxylamine disulfonate ion, and hydroxylamine trisulfonate ion. A competitive chain reaction was observed when the decomposition occurred in DMSO. The chain reaction was insignificant in carefully dried acetonitrile and dichloromethane. Part II reports the study of the reaction between 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and nitrosyl disulfonate ion. Product analysis and kinetic data obtained from stopped-flow procedures suggest that …
An Extension Of The Cochran Q Test, Soo-Young Cho
An Extension Of The Cochran Q Test, Soo-Young Cho
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The familiar x 2 test is ordinarily used to compare percentage distributions of categorical data for two or more independent samples. A more accurate com parison of the percentages is sometimes obtained if the samples consist of matched individuals. The NcNemar test is generally used when comparing only two related samples. Where there are three or more samples the Cochran Q test is used. Both of these tests apply only to the case of dichotomized responses. This thesis extends the Cochran Q test to the case where the responses are multinomial. A generalized statistic corresponding to Cochran's result is obtained. …
On The Molecular Theory Of Dielectric Polarization In Rigid‐Dipole Fluids, John D. Ramshaw
On The Molecular Theory Of Dielectric Polarization In Rigid‐Dipole Fluids, John D. Ramshaw
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
A molecular theory is developed for the polarization P(r) produced by a weak position‐dependent external electric field E0(r) in a finite fluid system, of arbitrary shape, composed of rigid polar molecules. The theory differs from earlier work in that no assumption is made concerning the form of the electrostatic constitutive relation. [The usual assumption in this regard is that P(r) = (ε–1) E(r) / 4π, where E(r) is the total Maxwell electric field. The “dielectric constant” ε is well defined only if the relation between P(r) and E(r) …
A Study Of Phytoplankton Dynamics In Lake Fayetteville As A Means Of Assessing Water Quality, Richard L. Meyer
A Study Of Phytoplankton Dynamics In Lake Fayetteville As A Means Of Assessing Water Quality, Richard L. Meyer
Technical Reports
Phytoplankton community was analyzed for seasonal and vertical distribution in Lake Fayetteville. This northwest Arkansas reservoir maintains a stable water level and chemical input with a relatively constant, slow overflow. Its source is groundwater seepage through a calcareous substrate with little contribution from the limited drainage basin. Phytoplankton community development with its associations and assemblages, chlorophylls -a, -b and c, and biomass distribution are described. The seasonal cycles of the chemical parameters NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, ortho-phosphate, silicon, pH, HCO3- and total-alkalinity plus oxygen are described and discussed. The physical parameters of temperature, light and climate are included. The interaction of …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Dioxane Complexes, James Donald Satterlee
All Master's Theses
The boron trifluoride, tin (IV) fluoride and titanium (IV) fluoride complexes with 1,4-dioxane have been prepared and studied using infrared techniques. The compositions of the complexes have been determined and correspond to the 1:1 adducts in the case of the tin and titanium compounds. The boron trifluoride adduct is a 2:1 (acid:base) adduct. Infrared spectra in the region 1300 cm.-1 to 550 cm.-1 are given and the effects of coordination upon the ligand vibrations are described.
A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton
A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton
All Master's Theses
Relatively speaking, few studies have concerned themselves with the problem of frequent testing, and as Keys pointed out, empirical evidence, uncomplicated by differences in the amount of testing material employed, on the effects of frequent testing is, at best, scarce (14:427). Also many studies used tests and test results for direct instruction, thus introducing additional variables. Furthermore, the choice of subjects and disciplines has been limited, the better part being taken from college psychology and sociology classes or high school science classes. This investigation was not an attempt to modify previous experiments, nor was it an attempt to identify which …

A Kinetic Analysis Of The Iodination Of Pyruvic Acid And Pyruvate Esters, Mohamed M. Fahmi Hegazi
A Kinetic Analysis Of The Iodination Of Pyruvic Acid And Pyruvate Esters, Mohamed M. Fahmi Hegazi
All Master's Theses
In the present work the relative rates of iodination of pyruvic acid and ethyl and methyl pyruvate have been compared at 25.0° C. These studies allow the determination of the respective free energies of activation for these processes. Measurements have also been carried out at various temperatures to determine the enthalpies and entropies of activation for the spontaneous and base catalysed iodinations of these pyruvate systems. The present thesis also includes a comparison of the solvent deuterium isotope effects associated with the spontaneous rate of iodination of pyruvic acid and the alkyl pyruvates. Also, the catalytic rate coefficients associated with …
An Application Of Spectroscopic Techniques To The Measurement Of Electron Density And Temperature In A Brush Cathode Plasma, Ramabhai M. Patel
An Application Of Spectroscopic Techniques To The Measurement Of Electron Density And Temperature In A Brush Cathode Plasma, Ramabhai M. Patel
Physics Theses & Dissertations
A brief review of the Langmuir probe, microwave and spectroscopic techniques most commonly used to make measurements .of plasma electron temperature and density is presented. Of these various methods, certain spectroscopic methods are applied to the measurements of electron density and temperature in a helium brush cathode plasma. The density measurement is based on the manner in which a series of Stark broadened spectral lines merges into an apparent continuum before the normal series limit is reached. This approach met with only limited success in that the density could be determined only by extrapolating the data obtained. Primarily because of …
The Thermal Decomposition Of 2,2'-Azoisobutane, Mervin Dewain Atwood
The Thermal Decomposition Of 2,2'-Azoisobutane, Mervin Dewain Atwood
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen, isobutane, isobutylene and 2,2,3,3-tetramethylbutane are the only products found in the thermal decomposition of 2,2'-azoisobutane. They are the results of the direct free radical dimerization and disproportionation. Ratio of the rate constants of disproportionation to dimerization was found to be 1.9 at 268°C and 4.5% azobutane in helium. This compared with Blackham and Eatough's value of 1.4 at 243°C and 3.6 at 290°C with 4% azobutane in helium. The ratio of the disproportionation to dimerization increased with an increase in temperature. A change in contact time affected the ratio at lower reaction temperatures but had little effect on it …
Studies Of Pig Brain Thiamin Pyrophosphokinase, James Weldon Peterson
Studies Of Pig Brain Thiamin Pyrophosphokinase, James Weldon Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Pig brain thiamin pyrophosphokinase (TPK) (ATP: thiamin pyrophosphotransferase, EC 2.7.6.2) was purified 260-fold over extracts of brain acetone powder. The purification was followed using a direct, radiometric assay. As determined in an analytical ultracentrifuge and by disc-gel electrophoresis, the most highly purified enzyme preparations were not homogeneous. The purified enzyme has a broad pH optimum extending from 8.3 to 9.3 in phosphate-glycylglycine buffer. It has an isoelectric point at about pH 4.2. For optimal enzymatic activity, the ratio of magnesium to ATP must be 0.6. Any deviation from this ratio causes a rapid drop in enzymatic activity. A study of …
Orthogonality In Normed Spaces, Martin R. Mccarthy
Orthogonality In Normed Spaces, Martin R. Mccarthy
All Master's Theses
This paper presents three definitions of orthogonality in normed spaces. Each definition is shown equivalent to the inner product being zero when restricted to an inner product space. The definitions arise from such properties in two space as the diagonals of a rectangle being equal and the Pythagorean Theorem. The third definition shows that the idea of an inner product can be generalized under certain conditions.
Analytical Aspects Of Laser-Induced Degradation Of Organic And Inorganic Compounds, William T. Ristau
Analytical Aspects Of Laser-Induced Degradation Of Organic And Inorganic Compounds, William T. Ristau
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The rapid deposition of energy by means of a pulsed ruby laser to degrade organic and inorganic materials is investigated as an analytical tool. Advantages and disadvantages of using a laser are discussed and compared to current conventional pyrolysis methods. The interaction of laser radiation with matter is briefly discussed.
A number of different organic compounds including saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds, and polymers have been studied. The degradation products were separated and identified by use of a gas chromatograph. Degradation studies have also been done on a series of inorganic salts including nitrates, sulfates, thiosulfates, and oxalates. The …

Crystal Structure Determination Of Β-Lactoglobulin From Electron Micrographs, Richard Roeter
Crystal Structure Determination Of Β-Lactoglobulin From Electron Micrographs, Richard Roeter
Dissertations and Theses
Often electron micrographs exhibit a repeating structure. Sometimes this repeating structure satisfies the definition of a crystal in that it has a three dimensional repeating structure. If the unit cell structure of this repeating structure can be determined it can be used to help categorize different sections of a particular sample. In some cases, the use of optical diffraction analysis of electron micrographs with repeating structure is a method of determining the unit cell structure.
Samples of β-Lactoglobulin were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope using both the crystalline material and carbon replicas of the crystal surface. Because the …

Geology Of The Rammel Mountain Area, Teton County, Wyoming, David W. Love
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Rammel Mountain area, on the west side of the Teton Range, Wyoming, includes Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks; Paleozoic sandstone, shale, dolomite and limestone; and Cenozoic conglomerate, agglomerate and breccia, ash-flow tuffs and glacial deposits.
The Precambrian layered gneiss, granitic gneiss and migmatite have undergone at least two episodes of deformation and metamorphism in the sillimanite-cordierite-muscovite-almandine subfacies of the Abukuma-type facies series prior to the emplacement of quartz monzonite. Dia-base dikes, quartz-epidote and epidote veins transect these earlier rocks.
The Cambrian-Mississippian shelf-facies rocks were folded, faulted and eroded to a plain in Late Cretaceous time and were buried by …

Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett
Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett
Master's Theses
The experiments reported here with zinc selenide have a two-fold purpose. First, by using basically the same experimental set-up as Conway did, we are attempting to duplicate this LIMA using zinc selenide instead of cadium sulfide. Unlike his set-up, primarily one laser chopping frequency was used. Also, only one laser wavelength, 632.8 nanometers, was available, where Conway used lasers of wave lengths 647.1 nanometers and 530.8 nanometers. Another main difference is that in earlier works by Conway, laser pulse duration was of the order of 40 milliseconds, whereas the present duration is approximately 2.5 milliseconds. It was observed that the …

Interim Report On Water Quality Investigation Degray Reservoir, Arkansas, J. Nix
Technical Reports
Impoundment of the Caddo River near Arkadelphia, Arkansas began in August, 1969. Detailed patterns of the dissolved oxygen distribution in this reservoir are presented for the period September, 1969 through April, 1971. Although the reservoir had not reached normal pool elevation, thermal stratification accompanied by severe hypolimnic oxygen depletion has been observed. The dissolved oxygen data show that an under flow occurs in the fall of the year and carries dissolved oxygen into the hypolimnic zone. The gradients of dissolved oxygen concentration observed during the winter indicate that the reservoir does not undergo complete mixing. A short summary of the …

High-Pressure Equation Of State For Nacl, Kcl, And Cscl, Daniel L. Decker
Faculty Publications
A calculation of the equation of state for NaCl from a Mie-Grüneisen equation was repeated using more accurate values of the zero-pressure compressibility. It was also extended to KCl and CsCl. An analysis of this approach to pressure calibration indicates that it will yield pressures with about the same accuracy as can be presently achieved by experimental measurements above 25 kbar, and thus furnishes a temporary practical pressure scale.
