Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett Jul 1971

Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett

Master's Theses

The experiments reported here with zinc selenide have a two-fold purpose. First, by using basically the same experimental set-up as Conway did, we are attempting to duplicate this LIMA using zinc selenide instead of cadium sulfide. Unlike his set-up, primarily one laser chopping frequency was used. Also, only one laser wavelength, 632.8 nanometers, was available, where Conway used lasers of wave lengths 647.1 nanometers and 530.8 nanometers. Another main difference is that in earlier works by Conway, laser pulse duration was of the order of 40 milliseconds, whereas the present duration is approximately 2.5 milliseconds. It was observed that the …

Interim Report On Water Quality Investigation Degray Reservoir, Arkansas, J. Nix

Technical Reports

Impoundment of the Caddo River near Arkadelphia, Arkansas began in August, 1969. Detailed patterns of the dissolved oxygen distribution in this reservoir are presented for the period September, 1969 through April, 1971. Although the reservoir had not reached normal pool elevation, thermal stratification accompanied by severe hypolimnic oxygen depletion has been observed. The dissolved oxygen data show that an under flow occurs in the fall of the year and carries dissolved oxygen into the hypolimnic zone. The gradients of dissolved oxygen concentration observed during the winter indicate that the reservoir does not undergo complete mixing. A short summary of the …

High-Pressure Equation Of State For Nacl, Kcl, And Cscl, Daniel L. Decker Jul 1971

High-Pressure Equation Of State For Nacl, Kcl, And Cscl, Daniel L. Decker

Faculty Publications

A calculation of the equation of state for NaCl from a Mie-Grüneisen equation was repeated using more accurate values of the zero-pressure compressibility. It was also extended to KCl and CsCl. An analysis of this approach to pressure calibration indicates that it will yield pressures with about the same accuracy as can be presently achieved by experimental measurements above 25 kbar, and thus furnishes a temporary practical pressure scale.

Surface Observations, Ground Truth And Data : Nasa-Usgs Mission 144 : Chesapeake Bay Region, Sept. 22-30, 1970, Maynard M. Nichols

Reports

Surface observations of coastal waters and "ground. truth" data were obtained to aid interpretation and analyses of overflight photography and imagery. Among the broad objectives of the mission was to investigate the potential of high-altitude, multispectral photography as a tool for the improved planning necessary to cope with multidisciplinary problems within the coastal zone, specifically with regard to:

1. The inventory and evaluation of the central Atlantic coastal area natural resources;

2. The assessment of human and natural degradation of these resources;

3. The feasibility of monitoring resource allocation and management, including land use categories and the impact of urbanization …

Increasing The Efficiency Of A Surface Ionization Mass Spectrometer, Thomas Curtis Adams Jul 1971

Increasing The Efficiency Of A Surface Ionization Mass Spectrometer, Thomas Curtis Adams

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

An Avco surface ionization mass spectrometer (model 90,000) was installed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in February, 1968. Since that date this machine has been used as a production instrument for the isotopic analysis of uranium and plutonium samples. During 1969, it was realized that a problem inherent in the ionization mechanism of the instrument was degrading the accuracy of results, and that the number of man-hours expended in reducing data had become excessive. As soon as this situation became apparent, corrective action was initiated to reduce the effect of the ionization problem and to decrease the amount of …

Observations On The Hydraulic Regime Of The Ridge And Swale Topography Of The Inner Virginia Shelf, Barry W. Holliday Jul 1971

Observations On The Hydraulic Regime Of The Ridge And Swale Topography Of The Inner Virginia Shelf, Barry W. Holliday

OES Theses and Dissertations

The Virginia inner shelf is dominated by southwest-trending sand ridges. Wavelengths are 2 to 4 km; amplitudes are up to 10 m; crests can be traced for up to 10 cm, Nearshore ridges trend southwest into the shore face and merge with it at depths as shoal as 5 m. The ridges have been examined by bathymetric mapping, grab sampling, coring, seismic profiling, SCUBA diving, and current monitoring. They are hemi-cylindrical sand bodies of recent age, resting on a pre-recent substrate. In troughs a thin, medium- to coarse-gained, pebbly lag veneers the substrate. Crests consist of a better sorted, medium- …

Analysis Of Littoral Transport By Wave Energy: Cape Henry, Virginia To The Virginia, North Carolina Border, Zvi Henry Weinman

OES Theses and Dissertations

An investigation of the rate of littoral transport by an analysis of wave energy for the area from Cape Henry, Virginia to the Virginia, North Carolina border is made. Wave refraction diagrams are done by digital computer. Total upcoast (northerly) transport is determined to be 2.05 x 106 yds3/year. Total downcoast (southerly) transport is determined to be 1.07 x 106 yds3/year. Net transport is determined to be 9.8 x 105 yds3/year in an upcoast (northerly) direction. The values obtained are compared with those of similar areas. The general efficacy of the …

A Graphic Analysis Of Current Velocity Salinity Density And Temperature During Periods Of Ebb And Flood In The Entrance To Thimble Shoals Channel, Stanley Hecker Jul 1971

A Graphic Analysis Of Current Velocity Salinity Density And Temperature During Periods Of Ebb And Flood In The Entrance To Thimble Shoals Channel, Stanley Hecker

OES Theses and Dissertations

A graphic analysis is presented of the observed patterns of longitudinal current velocity, salinity, density and temperature through a group of tidal cycles in Thimble Shoals Channel. Graphs of the properties indicate that this estuary passes through a sequence of estuarine types during a tidal cycle. In spite of this observation, the net non-tidal profiles of salinity are patterns of a partially mixed estuary.

The most noteworthy observation in this study was that longitudinal velocity was essentially constant throughout the water column at any increment of a tidal cycle as well as in the net non-tidal profile of the water …

Numerical Computer Perpheral Interactive Device With Manual Controls, James C. Fletcher, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Stanley S. Brokl

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A computer peripheral device is disclosed which in cludes a joystick whose displacement from a center position along two axes X and Y in either a plus (+) or a minus (-) direction is sensed. The displacement magnitude in either direction controls the rate of clock pulses provided by a variable frequency clock. The clock pulses from the two clocks are accumulated in two separate counters, whose contents are dis played. The contents of the counters are suppliable to a computer to update the contents of specific cells which define the position of a cursor on a display which is …

Broad peaks observed in the photoabsorption spectra of rare earths ∼10-20 eV above the 4d edge are attributed to transitions 4d104fN→4d94fN+1. Exchange interaction splits the 4d94fN+1 configuration and raises some multiplets by ∼20 eV. Autoionization to 4d9-4fNεf broadens the high levels. The interpretation extends to pd processes observed in the absorption of synchrotron light by transition elements.

A Two-Stage Postnikov System Where E₂ ≠ E∞ In The Eilenberg-Moore Spectral Sequence, Claude Schochet

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

Let ΩBPBB be the path fibration over the simply-connected space B, let ΩBEX be the induced fibration via the map ƒ : XB, and let X and B be generalized Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. G. Hirsch has conjectured that H*E is additively isomorphic to ΤοτH*B(Z₂,H*X), where cohomology is with Z₂ coefficients. Since the Elienberg-Moore spectral sequence which converges to H*E has E₂ = ΤοτH*B(Z₂,H …

A Study Of The Acetic Anhydride Method For The Determination Of Citric Acid, Russell Kent Odland Jun 1971

A Study Of The Acetic Anhydride Method For The Determination Of Citric Acid, Russell Kent Odland

Master's Theses

Citric acid is an important compound of many systems. Numerous methods, both qualitative and quantitative, have been used for the determination of the compound. Some of the biological systems investigated include fermentation studies, action on yeasts, antioxidant in fruits, additive in bakery goods and salad dressing preparations, amounts in vegetables, and others. The above examples are not complete; they only show the varied applications of citric acid. The purpose of this project was to investigate a quantitative spectrophotometric method using anhydrous conditions based on the citric acid-acetic anhydride-pyridine reaction. Conditions affecting the reaction were investigated and optimized for maximum sensitivity and …

Electron Densities For Homonuclear Diatomic Molecules From The Thomas-Fermi-Dirac Theory, Jerry Goodisman Jun 1971

Electron Densities For Homonuclear Diatomic Molecules From The Thomas-Fermi-Dirac Theory, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

Electron densities are calculated from approximate solutions to the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac equation for homonuclear diatomic molecules. The accuracy of expectation values calculated from these densities is assessed. In general, one obtains fair agreement with self-consistent-field and experimental results, but this is insufficient when a property is a difference between electronic and nuclear contributions. An important example is the Hellmann-Feynman force on a nucleus, the net force necessarily being repulsive, as for closed-shell atoms. Forc and energy results for such a situation are compared with experiment. Finally, it is shown that a modified theory, previously applied to atoms, gives improvement in expectation …
